Mission
Nagle Jackson's life was the theatre. An internationally known theatrical director and playwright for over sixty years, he knew that theatre is about all aspects of human life: its past, its present, and its dreams of the future. That's why he believed that anyone choosing a career as an actor or theatrical director, or playwright should know a lot more about the world, its art and its history, than just how to create theatre.
A former actor and liberal arts major himself, graduating Whitman College with a BA in English and French Literature, Nagle Jackson believed that liberal arts programs are essential to the education of anyone wishing to pursue a career in theatre, especially as an actor, director, or playwright. In his words, if undergraduate students major only in theatre, "...they know everything about theatre except why."
Therefore, to honor his memory, we, the family of Nagle Jackson, who passed away in July 2024 at age 88, have created the the Nagle Jackson Liberal Arts and Theatre Award, a scholarship to be given to three winners, each being a four-year undergraduate student pursuing a double major in theatre and also one of the following liberal arts: English, literature, history, philosophy, art history, psychology, sociology, anthropology, or political science. We hope this is one way for Nagle Jackson's name to live on as an inspiration to college students who are interested in careers in theatre and would also like to learn the "why".
