I remember moving into my first college apartment like it was yesterday. I was 17 years old, an incoming freshman in college never lived away from home, and desperately ready to be on my own. The apartment was small yet spacious and perfect.

You know that feeling you get the night before the first day of a brand new school year, and you're so excited, you either have your first-day-of-school clothes laid out on your bed, ready for the morning, or you sleep in them because you're so excited? Yeah, well, that's exactly how I felt the day before move-in, but I wish I had someone or something guiding me through everything I needed. Which is what brings me here today.

This article is all about preparing for your college apartment: what you need, what to expect, and how to understand your lease agreement. I will break down essential needs per room in your apartment, as well as any miscellaneous items that you may need in the future. There is nothing like having your own space and with my guide, you can make it cozy, safe and ready for an incredible college experience!

Understanding Your College Apartment Needs

When you're a teenager, having privacy becomes a major necessity. You're getting older, priorities become different, and your space becomes your sanctuary, especially when you're a college student. So, when it comes to your first apartment, there are quite a few things to consider in terms of needs, like the size of the apartment, how many people you'll be living with, and what things are actually needed vs things that are wanted.

You'll also want to think about personal preferences for your living place because if one thing is certain, after a long school day, the last thing you want to come home to is an empty room, or even worse, a messy one. So, it's important to ask yourself questions like:

  • What do you need that will give you the most peace?
  • How many people are too many people to live with?
  • Do you want your own bathroom, or are you okay with not having a private bathroom?
  • Are you comfortable sharing supplies with roommates?

Etc, etc. These are just a few basic questions you will need to consider when it comes to your college apartment.

Dorm vs. Apartment

When we talk about a college apartment, I want to make sure you don't get it confused with a dorm room.

A dorm is typically a shared living space provided by your college/university for students, often with communal facilities and shared bedrooms. An apartment, on the other hand, is a private living space that can be rented or owned, usually with separate rooms and amenities, and a one-year (minimum) lease you will sign that ensures you will be living there for that year.

The main difference between the two lies in the ownership, privacy, and level of independence offered by each type of accommodation. For many college students, the college apartment might be more desirable in terms of privacy, but then you'd have to consider rent, utilities, and financial maintenance.

Creating a Packing List

Now, before we get into the logistics of how to assemble your apartment checklist, I want to take a moment to stress the importance of a college packing list. Take it from someone who has been there and done that: you do NOT want to get lost and overwhelmed in all the things you think you need and all the little details that will easily take over once you've secured your living arrangements because the next thing you know, you're packing more than you should.

So, my advice is to start with the major necessities and then make your way to the secondary desires to complete your dream packing list.

College Apartment Checklist

We've finally arrived at the ultimate guide to your college apartment checklist. Here is where I break down the list according to room. Let's get started!

Living Room Needs

Your living room is not only going to be your room for entertaining friends and guests, but it will also be your place to chill. Here are living room items to consider from most to least essential:

  • Couch
  • Coffee table
  • Lamp
  • TV stand
  • TV
  • Rug (your apartment may come with carpet floors, but an extra rug of your choice may be on your list)
  • Stereo
  • Bins for extra storage
  • Decorations (i.e., wall art, flowers, plants, couch pillows, mirror, etc.)

Kitchen Necessities

If you're anything like me, your college apartment kitchen is going to be a highlight in your new space. Yes, the living room is for fun and relaxing, but the kitchen is where the culinary magic happens. Here is my list of kitchen essentials, in no particular order because everything in the kitchen is essential:

  • Cooking utensils (i.e., pots, pans, Tupperware, strainers, baking sheet, frying pan, etc.)
  • Dishes (i.e., plates, cups, mugs, etc.)
  • Silverware (i.e., forks, spoons, knives)
  • Kitchen appliances (i.e., coffee maker, toaster, microwave)
  • Pantry staples (i.e., bread, rice, pasta, snacks, etc.)
  • Garbage can
  • Dish rack
  • Dish rags
  • Barstools
  • Paper towels

Of course, this list is subjective according to what your college apartment already brings, but if it doesn't come equipped with any of these supplies, this will come in handy!

Bathroom Basics

Next up is the bathroom. The one place that will come to the rescue in more ways than one (if you know what I mean). Let's take a look at all your bathroom necessities!

  • Shower curtain
  • Shower liner
  • Garbage bin
  • Shower caddy
  • Towels
  • Toilet paper
  • Hair dryer (and straightener for the girls)
  • Toiletries (i.e., toothbrush, toothpaste, air freshener, soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc.)
  • Bathroom cleaning supplies (i.e., toilet brush, plunger, gloves, shower cleaner)

This is the one room where you DON'T want to miss a thing on the list. Thank me later.

Bedroom Essentials

Now, for the main event--the room that's going to be your sanctuary, your favorite space, your safe space: your bedroom. Having your own room is different when it's in your new apartment, so here is where you can have fun when decorating, but before that, bedroom essentials first:

  • Bed frame
  • Mattress
  • Boxspring
  • Bedding
  • Nightstand
  • Lamp
  • Closet organizer
  • Hangers
  • Dresser
  • Laundry basket
  • Full-length mirror
  • TV
  • Desk
  • A comfy chair

Your new bedroom is going to be yours for your college career and will evolve over time as you will, so take care of it. It is your home.

Additional Essentials for College Students

Now that the main rooms are covered, let's talk about additional essentials on your first college apartment checklist. Here are a few items to consider:

Laundry and Cleaning Supplies

  • Laundry detergent
  • Fabric softener
  • Vacuum
  • Mop
  • Trash bags
  • Recycling bins
  • Dish soap
  • Wash rags
  • Shower shoes
  • Stove cleaner
  • Window and mirror cleaner
  • air freshener

This list can be tailored to your needs for your new apartment, but I suggest focusing on these items once all the essentials are covered.

Technology and Entertainment

And we can't forget about entertainment. When you work hard, you deserve to play hard, and having a good balance of both is an essential component, especially in college.

  • Laptop
  • Phone
  • Charger(s)
  • Headphones
  • Stereo
  • Gaming console
  • Board games (i.e., Twister, Uno, Taboo, Bingo, etc.)

Safety and First Aid

Since you're away from home, it is key to stay safe and keep a first aid kit on you, amongst other things. Here is a list of safety essentials:

  • First aid kit (with essentials, like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, etc.)
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Smoke detector
  • A spare set of keys
  • Storage containers
  • Extension cords

Organization and Your Space

I don't know about you, but I don't like a messy, disorganized living area, so here are my top organization essentials necessary for your first college apartment:

  • Storage bins
  • Baskets
  • Desk organizers
  • A planner
  • Command strips to hang items on the wall
  • Tape
  • Folders

Reviewing Your Checklist

Before getting started on your shopping, it's important to make sure you have everything you need for a comfortable and safe living place. Break down your checklist by room and review each section to ensure all essential items are listed, so when it comes time to hitting the stores, you are ready to go.

Also, once you know the layout of your new apartment, you'll have a clear idea of how you want to set everything up, which can make it easier to know exactly what you want when you see it!

Understanding Your Lease Agreement

Understanding your lease agreement is crucial to ensure you are aware of your rights and responsibilities as a tenant. Carefully read through the entire document and pay close attention to key terms like rent amount, lease duration, security deposit, maintenance responsibilities, and any additional fees. Know what is allowed and not allowed in your apartment and understand your responsibilities as a tenant so you don't find yourself in a bad position with your landlords.

If you have any questions or are unsure about any part of the agreement, please, please, please ask your landlord, a legal professional, or even your parents for guidance. You have to be your own advocate to avoid any misunderstandings or disputes in the future.

Here's to an incredible first college apartment experience. Happy renting!
