Ever since being a young woman in high school, I have always wanted to work in sports broadcasting and sports journalism. The desire to achieve my goal has only grown stronger each year. My time as a cheerleader and as a basketball player has provided me with a unique opportunity to truly understand the sport from both perspectives. Having been so involved in the game, I know first hand the countless hours of hard work and dedication that the players put into every game. I also understand the emotional connection that all players have to the game and to their teammates. Ever since I can remember, I have always loved playing and watching sports. I was fortunate to have the ability to play basketball for many years – and it meant the world to me. Although there were some tough days in the gym, some tough games on the court, and plenty of days when I didn’t feel like giving my all – I always gave my all for my team. And that’s what sports are all about. They mean so much more than just a score. They teach us valuable lessons about ourselves, about dealing with adversity, about working hard towards something we want, and most importantly the power of the human spirit and the power of a team. Being a competitive cheerleader has also given me another wonderful experience in sports – and even though I am in a different role as a cheerleader, it is so rewarding to be able to help teams and players succeed by getting them pumped up and by motivating the crowd and fans at games. I feel so fortunate to have been able to have such diverse experiences in the world of sports – both as a player and as a cheerleader. And one of the most enjoyable things that I have been able to do is share some of the special moments in sports with others. I have always been extremely passionate about the art of storytelling. I love to share my feelings and experiences with others, and I love to hear about their struggles and triumphs as well. It has always been my dream to share the incredible stories of the athletes I cover with the world. I want to share their struggles and sacrifices, as well as their joy and triumphs. I want to give fans a window into the personal and emotional sides of sports, and into the moments that matter most to them. So far, my education at Louisiana State University has given me a great foundation in journalistic practice and ethics. My coursework at LSU has allowed me to understand the history and importance of journalism in our society, and has provided me with a wide array of tools and skills to position me as a competitive journalist. Another huge asset to studying Sports Journalism at LSU is the truly phenomenal faculty that we have. The professors are not only incredibly knowledgeable in the field, but they are also very passionate and truly care about their students. They push us to achieve our best, but they are always there to support us and answer any questions we may have. LSU is also located right near many of the major sports teams in the tri-state area. This creates a great opportunity for many internships and job opportunities – and we have seen many students land internship and job opportunities because of LSU’s location.

It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. I maintain my mental wellness by partaking in a holistic lifestyle. Holistic health is an approach to life that considers various attributes of wellness. It urges individuals to recognize the entire person. The elements and factors surrounding it can shape and maintain overall health. I am one whose views and habits about health are particularly holistic. Between being a full-time college student and having a full-time job working over forty hours a week, my mental, physical, and nutritional health are at the highest stake. My daily routine regarding them is essential because they will significantly decline if disregarded. Physical and nutritional health go hand in hand, so I incorporate them into my routine. Moreover, the food you eat directly impacts cognitive and bodily functions. I make sure to intake only the essentials needed. I wake up at 6 am sharp every morning to prepare and eat breakfast. My breakfast consists of the MyPlate Plan. The MyPlate Plan shows your food group targets – what and how much to eat within your calorie allowance. Your food plan is personalized based on age, sex, height, weight, and physical activity level. After eating my meal accordingly, I go to planet fitness and commence my workout routine. Since birth, my neuro-divergent brother and I have lived with our grandparents; they were our sole providers. Our biological mother didn't desire to have a relationship with us. She’s repeatedly stated that we are “mistakes” and a “burden,” and that's why she hasn't made an effort. As for our fathers, their mentality about us was similar. My brother’s dad especially disregarded him because of his cognitive disability. However, our grandparents stood by, nurtured, protected, and provided for us. Their love was unconditional and everlasting. That was until my grandfather passed, leaving us to fend for ourselves. That’s when our entire world came tumbling down. Life changed drastically; all we had was our grandmother. She had to work exceptionally harder, taking on both parental roles; I had to step up from being a child, and my brother, well, he just stayed my brother. I was only seven, yet I had the responsibilities of the average 30-year-old mother. Cook, clean, and care for a child, all while being one myself. He was older than I but still got to enjoy his childhood; meanwhile, mine was stripped from me. You might ask, “Where was your grandmother in all this?” She was grinding. She worked two complex laboring jobs while battling Breast Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, and Glaucoma. She supplied us with every one of our needs and gave us the things we wanted whenever possible. Likewise, she made it to every basketball game, cheer competition, award ceremony, and graduation. Her love never ceased; It was just limited. There’s only so much one person can do. I never resented my grandma for how difficult life was for me at such a young age because she did all she could. I never whined about taking on duties because she didn’t ask for any of this either. It was tough for both of us! This experience is unfortunate and unforgettable and has significantly impacted the person I am. However, the struggles I witnessed and endured have molded me into a strong-willed, persevering woman. It taught me a valuable lesson as well: to appreciate what I have and the people around me. Furthermore, to fight for what I desire. Admittedly, I'm still in this situation. Currently 20, in college, working full-time to support all of us. The only difference is Grandma is 67 and can't work anymore, so now it's all on me. No pressure, right? I watched my grandmother fight all her life. Fight cancer (3 times) and tons of other medical conditions and never once groaned. I want to do the same for her; I have to do the same for her. Honestly, I could give her my all, but it would never be enough to amount to what she's done. I fight to further my education every day, not because I feel I'm indebted to her, but because she deserves to see the children she's broken her back providing for become successful. I need her to know that I recognize everything she’s done and that it rubbed off onto my character. I want to be able to take care of her as she did me. She has no idea how much love and compassion I have for her. Lastly, raising my brother and being his caretaker opened my eyes to schooling system issues and how they neglect disabled kids. It’s led me to pursue a Mass Communication/ Education degree, so I can enter the profession of special-education teaching. As an African American female collegiate golfer and journalist, my golf journey began unexpectedly. I had always been an avid follower of golf but never could have imagined myself playing it. Growing up, I had the opportunity to watch some of the greatest players of all time on television and read about them in magazines. Still, my interest grew when I had the chance to observe the game first-hand during a family outing. At that moment, I knew I wanted to give golf a try. Since then, my passion for golf has grown tremendously; it has become an integral part of my life. Through dedication and practice, I have become one of the top collegiate golfers in my area. My ambition and aspirations have inspired me to develop my game, not only at the collegiate level but also through professional and amateur tournaments. The game of golf has allowed me to express myself in ways that I never thought possible. It has allowed me to push myself beyond my boundaries and discover what I am truly capable of. I believe golf is vital because it has provided me with a place to channel all my energy and creative skills. Golf has also enabled me to create meaningful relationships with other individuals and groups, which will benefit me. My goal is to continue to play golf at a high level and eventually, if all goes as planned, represent my country internationally. As a result, female golfers often face challenges such as limited access to courses, fewer resources and opportunities, and a lack of media coverage and recognition. However, I have been fortunate to attend a university that values and supports women's golf. My team and I have access to top-notch facilities and resources, and our coaches prioritize our success on and off the course. Additionally, the sport has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, mental toughness, and resilience, which have helped me overcome any obstacles I have faced as a female golfer. Playing golf has been an enriching experience for me as a collegiate athlete. While there have been challenges to overcome as a female golfer, the sense of accomplishment and personal growth that comes with improving my skills and overcoming obstacles makes it all worth it. I am grateful for the opportunity to play golf and the lessons and experiences it has provided me on and off the course.

One of the most notable black leaders in history was Martin Luther King Jr. He once said, "A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus." This quote highlights the importance of democracy in leadership. True leaders don’t impose their ideas onto others but instead work to create a shared vision that everyone can get behind. A leader requires active listening, compromise, and a willingness to learn from others. Empathy is also a crucial component of leadership. Maya Angelou once said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." This quote shows the importance of understanding and connecting with others more deeply. A leader who can empathize with the experiences and struggles of those they lead is more likely to gain their trust and inspire them to work towards a common goal. Lastly, leadership cannot exist in a vacuum; the political climate must inform it. Influential figures such as Shirley Chisholm, the first Black American woman elected to Congress, understood this well. She said, "Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth." Chisholm recognized that leadership is not just about personal ambition but about using one's platform to serve and uplift others. A leader must bring attention and awareness to the larger social and political context we live in. To this end, I say, leadership is critical for constructing positive change in the world. Effective leadership requires empathy, democracy, and a keen understanding of the political landscape. By embodying the leadership qualities of historical black leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, and Shirley Chisholm, I hope to make a difference in my community, country, and beyond. Leadership is significant to me because as history and time have passed, I've recognized the trials, tribulations, and sacrifices my ancestors have made for this country so that everyone can be equal. As an African-American Christian and communication/English major, I am passionate about leadership because it is an essential tool to create positive change in the world. I am incredibly passionate about the role of an ELA teacher in leadership because I believe that language is a powerful tool for building community and expressing ideas. As a journalist, I consider myself to be a culturalist person. What excites me the most about college is its capacity to provide unique opportunities to explore and learn about diverse cultures and perspectives. So far, I've been exposed to people from different backgrounds, countries, traditions, etc., allowing for conversations and learning opportunities about different ways of life. Through classes, student organizations, and extra-curricular activities, I've learned about various customs, beliefs, and values. Additionally, I've experienced different cultures first-hand by traveling and visiting museums. My daily routine regarding them is essential because they will significantly decline if disregarded. Physical and nutritional health go hand in hand, so I incorporate them into my routine. The food you eat directly impacts cognitive and bodily functions, so I make sure to intake only the essentials needed. I wake up at 6 am sharp every morning to prepare and eat breakfast. My breakfast consists of the MyPlate Plan. The MyPlate Plan shows your food group targets – what and how much to eat within your calorie allowance. Your food plan is personalized based on age, sex, height, weight, and physical activity level. After eating my meal accordingly, I go to planet fitness and commence my workout routine. I begin my first workout with a warm-up consisting of 10 minutes of walking, jogging, or another aerobic exercise. Next, I do barbell push press, goblet squat, dumbbell single-arm row, lateral shoulder raise, bench press, and pull-ups/assisted pull-ups. Usually, I finish by 9 am. When done, I return home, shower, do my skin-care routine, and head to my college classes for the day. Throughout the rest of the evening, I continue to follow through with my MyPlate Plan for lunch and dinner. Then I wake up and repeat the following day. Additionally, my mental health is kept stable by my self-care tactics. I acknowledge every part of my person: its needs, feelings, boundaries, and triggers. I confront and cut out all things that I'm uncomfortable with. I voice my limits and let no one pressure me into anything potentially harmful. Finally, I don't put myself in the presence of people who hurt me emotionally, including my family. My entire life, I was emotionally, verbally, and psychologically abused by family members until I cut contact. People made me feel that I couldn't cut off relatives because "family is family," but family isn't family if they don't see an issue with hurting you! Standing your ground is vital for peace of mind! By partaking in a holistic lifestyle, I maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul amidst the challenges of school.

From the texture and layering of wet-on-wet paint to the soft gradients of wet-on-dry, there is something extraordinary about the watercolor medium. When I started learning how to paint, I found myself inspired by the work of others. I had never seen art so vibrant and alive than when I looked at the traditional paintings of Chinese masters like Qi Baishi and Lu Yao. I soon realized why they had been revered for their works, as each artwork brought forth a unique atmosphere, defined by their mastery of color blending and brushwork. I found that I wanted to achieve a similar level of craftsmanship, and since then, my skill has grown immensely. The ultimate goal of my watercolor painting is to one day use it to teach children. As an aspiring elementary school art teacher, I’ll demonstrate to my pupils the joys of being creative. I want to inspire my future students and help them foster their artistic expressions through watercolor. I believe that no matter what level of experience a student may have, the proper guidance and instruction can help nurture any budding artist. Two original watercolor paintings I've created are entitled "Rainy Day" and "Sunset over the Hills." The first piece, "Rainy Day," was inspired by a walk I took on a rainy day. I wanted to capture the soft, muted colors of the sky and ground that dominated the landscape around me. Using a variety of blues and greys, I painted a peaceful rural scene with a small river winding its way through the background. The weather created a calm and serene atmosphere I wanted to capture in my painting. The second painting, "Sunset over the Hills," was a study in contrast to "Rainy Day." I captured vibrant oranges, yellows, and reds of the sun setting over the hills. Again, I used a variety of pigments to paint the different hues of the sunset, creating a beautiful contrast against the blue evening sky. As I painted this piece, I was captivated by the beauty of the landscape and inspired to capture it as accurately as possible. Resilience: "The capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness." Of all attributes, resilience is my strong suit. It primarily highlights my determination, perseverance, and diligence; likewise, it accentuates my possession of grit; "courage and resolve, the strength of character." Commencing at a young age, I encountered struggles that no child should endure. Keratoconus occurs when your cornea (the clear, dome-shaped front surface of your eye) thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape. It results in blurred vision and sensitivity to light and glare. At age 14, I was diagnosed with this eye disease. I sought treatment immediately. It consisted of two collagen and cross-linking surgeries—one on each eye. Nevertheless, this was only to delay the progression of damage to my vision. It wasn't a cure. It didn't completely eradicate the deterioration. As you can imagine, my reality changed dramatically. My school became knowledgeable about my disability, and I was thrown into special needs courses and forced to take braille. I was bullied, called ableist slurs, and eventually began to deny the accommodations provided to me by the school (elevator use and extended test time), which only worsened matters. I quit using the elevator and instead used the stairs, which directly caused a fractured ankle and wrist—moreover, even greater embarrassment. I ceased using extended time for fear of being labeled "slow" or "special," resulting in awful grades for nearly an entire semester of sophomore year. All of this happened because I was constantly weary of criticism and other people's perception of me regarding a disability that was out of my control. As much as I wanted to be in denial, I eventually accepted and came to terms with my illness. Although I hated taking braille, I mastered it. I started taking all my tests in braille, studying more, except for the extra time, A'cing all my exams, and graduated on the banner roll. Moreover, I started using my elevator accommodations. Nevertheless, the kids were more brutal in teasing than ever before. You always hear the phrase, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." That's simply untrue. Those words and bullying cut deeper than any knife. However, I ceased to let that hold me back any longer and kept doing what was best for me. Consequently, upon high school completion, I acquired excellent academic status and now attend an eminent university. I greatly value my resilience because it allowed me to conquer my hardships, develop and thrive as a person, overcome trauma, be courageous, and push to survive, even when situations felt impossible. I'm only 20 years old. I still have a long way to go, and I need resilience to continue blossoming. This quality will help me in my life journey because it'll enable me to adapt and bounce back when a complex circumstance occurs. It will allow me to pick myself up again after trauma or painful experience. Levels of resiliency will change and develop throughout life, and at points, we will find that we do not cope as well as others and surprise ourselves when we manage a problematic situation. In another sense, resilience is one of many psychological tools we implement to get us back to feeling normal again. It is a vital trait!

The song commences with a white man's perception of black men and people as a whole. His feelings towards blacks consisted of every stereotype one can think of. He gives his view of the N-word, which he used numerous times throughout his argument. He argued how he's "not racist", though, just fed up with the community and its "laziness". Yet, he did acknowledge he knows there's "a disconnect" between their cultures, he just doesn't understand it. Furthermore, as he finishes expressing himself, a black man picks up where he left off. The Black man expressed how whites would never understand because they weren't black! Whites don’t know about racial targeting, poverty and constantly being denied jobs simply due to "blackness". Blacks aren't lazy, just undermined by society. Moreover, he touched on how the N-word has a different meaning when used by blacks compared to whites. Acknowledgment of "cultural disconnect" was examined as well. When all was said and done both men acknowledged each side's feelings and hugged. The message is truly important. We don't "understand" one another because no one makes an effort to listen to others voice their opinions and that's why racism is still prevalent! If we listened to one another we could start moving forward! We have to take others into account!
