Hello, welcome to my profile! My name is Zoey and I am a current high school senior from Michigan, I am planning to study Music Composition and/or Saxophone Performance at public university starting in fall of 2026.
I have been writing instrumental music since my freshman year of high school, and my passion for the art form has only grown throughout the past four years. Writing music has helped me discover more about myself as a musician and an artist, not only in the way I perform but the in the way I express my creativity and emotional ideas. I want to be able to tell stories and communicate messages in my compositions that can't be articulated in words, and music is such a wonderful way to connect with anyone no matter their background. I want to impact the world in a positive way, and by writing and performing beautiful music I believe I can contribute to making the world a more positive and interconnected place.

Every musical performance ends with a brief moment of silence following the conclusion of a piece. This moment can unify an entire group of individuals, all lost in a noiseless appreciation of the music which has just come to an end. A lingering sense of collective understanding is present in this moment, establishing a deep, unspoken bond between the audience and the performers. This moment, fragile and instantaneous, will soon be broken by an eruption of applause, but that does not take away from its beauty. I look forward to this moment in my performances; it serves as a reminder to me that, however divided the world may seem, we can always be brought together by sharing our passions. Because of this, I have made an effort to share my passion for music with others. I hope to experience those beautiful, often silent, moments of musical unity with as many people as I can.
However, as I stood for the final time on the tall podium before my band- my arms raised in gestures conducting tempo and expression across the football field, dressed in a sparkly black suit effectively matching our show’s theme of Bright Lights Big City, demonstrating passion and strength with an engaged expression and concentrated demeanor- I could not help but dread that moment of silence which I had always found myself looking forward to. I knew it would be the last time I would experience this silent passion alongside these exact performers. I had begun my musical journey with many of them as incoming freshmen. We had been welcomed in by the current members with open arms, as they shared their traditions and passion for music with us. I was inspired to continue their efforts, and I wanted to share as much music as possible.
When I was appointed to the role of Drum Major, I prioritized welcoming new members just as I had been welcomed. One of my favorite things about being Drum Major was watching each member emerge from their "shell". Becoming more comfortable in such a vast and new environment is hard, but by connecting with the young members through a shared musical passion, they began to feel a sense of belonging within our group. Outside of marching band, I performed in recitals at our local senior living home, volunteered to tutor young band students in preparation for their Solo & Ensemble festival, and participated in summer events including a week-long beginner instrumental camp where I helped 5th graders learn flute. As I contributed to the effort of bringing music to my community, I continued to strengthen my personal bonds and friendships.
I have realized that by sharing passionate moments of music with others, we can all bring music to the world and make it a more interconnected place. Throughout my experiences in marching band, my volunteerism in my community, and my own personal musical endeavors, I have felt these moments of connection that have pushed me forward in my goal to pursue music. Even in my final moments as Drum Major, as I dreaded the brief moment of beautiful silence, I also found comfort in knowing that it would come. These kinds of moments always do, and with them will come understanding and togetherness.
