Hi! My name is Zoey Brown, and I am continuing my education in elementary education at Western Governors University. I am a very dedicated student, and I just recently graduated high school with an advanced diploma, while receiving my Associate's Degree in Science from Western Nevada College.
My passions include music, running, and other hobbies like art.
I started to enjoy music while in grade school, and I have learned to play many instruments since middle school. I began learning in 2015, and have been playing since! I started and continued the clarinet for 7+ years and learned other instruments along the way, such as the tenor saxophone and flute. In my last year of high school, I trained to become a drum major, which is a leader who keeps the tempo with the use of a baton or other forms of time-keeping, such as conducting. It not only helped me in high school but has helped me to substitute teach in music classes at the middle school and high school.
I continue to play today by finding groups such as a pit for a musical and have been working on an audition for the University of Nevada Reno’s marching band this upcoming fall.
Running is something you either love or hate. In this case, it was something I fell in love with in just grade school and continued all the way until I graduated by running in cross-country and track and field. I continue to train, work out, and find races locally to participate in.

Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Why do I love math? I love math because it makes up our everyday living and people just don't realize it. Everything we eat is made in calculated portions. Everything we use for our skin health is precisely calculated. All the technology we use in this day in age is created by math in simple terms. Without math, we wouldn't have almost anything we have come to depend on in our everyday lives. Not only does it create almost everything around you, but it also helps improve your mind, and helps you in everyday circumstances.
Even though not everyone works in a working field that requires math, the math still affects everyone by having financial responsibilities. Our financial decisions include investing, saving, budgeting, and spending in our day-to-day lives. We are all bankers in our lives. We spend, save, and track to keep ourselves at ease so we don't overspend or go into debt. I can relate to using math for budgeting. Not too long ago, my work had cut my hours unexpectedly so I had to calculate my bills and how much I would put from each biweekly check into the monthly payments. The calculations with budgeting helped me to become less stressed and less worried about being in debt and helped me to know if I needed to find a side job to cover some of the bills. Budgeting, even not being in a poor financial situation, even helps to save and put money aside over time for things you enjoy like vacation and hobbies without the added stress. Even though not everyone may be working in a field that requires the usage of mathematics, it is still interesting to see how people use it every day without even realizing it.
