    Anderson Engineering Scholarship
I want to pursue Engineering because it’s one of the few fields that merge my two interests: art and math. I love creating things with my hands, and I have such an appreciation for creativity. I also really enjoy systematic processes and algorithms. Picking one over the other was not an option for me, so I landed on Engineering. My grandfather was a Construction Engineer, my father is a Civil Engineer, and my brother is an Electrical Engineer, so I think it’s fair to say that Engineering runs in my family. I’m choosing the Biomedical path because I’ve always had the urge to help and heal others. I’ve taken three engineering courses thus far, all of which have allowed to me participate in group projects and assignments. I participated in one fair, where we had to build and present a paper roller coaster to a panel of judges, as well as the other teams there. It was fun because I got to work with people with similar interests, and I got to learn the ins and outs of the profession. I was born to be an artist. I was created to create. My purpose is to inspire others to create. As a child, I said I wanted to be a dentist so I could fix my dad’s teeth. Growing up, my heart hasn’t changed much, I just want to help more people in more ways. There are so many places for an artist and for me, it starts at Wake Technical Community College. After getting my associate in engineering, I will transfer to a 4-year university where I will get my degree in Biomedical Engineering. I don’t know which university I’m going to yet. My options are slim considering my major of choice and the funds my parents are providing. Unfortunately, they do not have much freedom to help me financially, but they always remind me that I can do great things. I aim to be a Prosthetist. I want to make prosthetics for the artists, for the visionaries, for the painters, for the musicians, for the sculptures, for the poets, for the creators. Every year during the holidays, I volunteer at Durham Rescue Mission. While I’m usually on kitchen duty, I always find myself outside, watching the kids running and playing. There’s a deep wholeness I feel during those times, and I believe we can all experience it by reviving the connection with nature through creation. I want to see chalk art on the sidewalk again. I want to see painters with their easels on the grass. I want to see lumberjacks building birdhouses. I want to see people existing in a space they can also create in. As a nation, we have a long way to go, so as an individual, I want to step up and create those spaces myself. I’ll need time, labor, space, and of course money to do so. I will be extremely grateful for a scholarship because with that, I can focus on my purpose and work towards my dream.

One piece of technology I would advance is the ball-point pen. This advancement will be used in classrooms, where there are time writing assessments. This new pen will be slightly bigger, making it more comfortable to hold, and with a built in luminescent screen. Through an app, all the pens can be calibrated together and set on a timer. The timer can be set for however long it’s needed. The timer will begin as soon as the thrusting device is pressed (when the pen is clicked). The amount of time remaining is displayed on each individual pen screen. This way, the user can keep track of his or her time. Once the timer runs out, the pen tip is retracted back into the barrel and is inaccessible until the pen gets recalibrated. The purpose of this upgrade is to make writing assessments truly fair by giving each person the exact amount of time needed. I was born to be an artist. I was created to create. C.L. Scholarship of Black Women in Engineering
I am the only black girl in all of my classes. And have been since I got to community college. There aren't many black women in Engineering, and I strive to be that. I want to be the inspiration that other young black girls can look up to. My classes are hard, but I refuse to give up. There's only one of me left and if I quit now, then that will be one less black woman in STEM. One black woman who has inspired me is Daya Brown. I learned about her recently as her story is just beginning to go viral. She is 18 years old, and a senior at Westlake High School in Atlanta. She was accepted into over 50 colleges and was awarded over $1,000,000 in scholarships. This struck me as inspiring because most black women we hear doing great things are older and have devoted a lot of time and research into developing some breakthrough. Ms. Brown, however, is younger than I am, and she showed me, and the rest of the world, that age does not matter. It’s dedication and drive that takes one to their desired destination. In an interview with Good Morning America, she said that the process wasn’t easy and that it took many sleepless nights to get closer and closer to her passion. This resonated with me because I value my sleep very much, and there is little I would do to miss out on it. But she showed me that nothing good comes without sacrifices. I was born to be an artist. I was created to create. My purpose is to inspire others to create. As a child, I said I wanted to be a dentist so I could fix my dad’s teeth. Learner Math Lover Scholarship
I love math because it is endless. People get their PhD in Mathematics because there is always more to explore. Math is a universal language that I've loved from a young age. I was on a Math Bowl Team in elementary school where I was team captain for two years. We got 2nd place both times. Math is something I have fun with and also challenge myself with. There is nothing more satisfying than having an epiphany about a math problem I've been struggling with. That in and of itself is one of the greatest aspects of math. There are different methods to approach a problem that could all be correct. I was later a math tutor in high school and I helped a lot of students conquer their math homework. I'm into engineering as well and I gave some of the tutees my tips and tricks for solving and understanding math. Thinking like an engineer and giving the clearest and most concise answer possible has helped me and has helped the other people I've tutored understand the subject more. Math is a building block to the career I want to pursue (Biomedical Engineering). Loving math means that I will love my job.
