    Ms. Catherine Gipson Scholarship
Growing up in Sacramento, California, I went to a pretty diverse school. The problem with this was that I was a part of a college preparatory program that only had 6 African-Americans in the program. Students who were not in the college preparatory program were labeled as general education students. I found it unfair that most students of color at my high school were getting a worse education when the same should have been applied to the whole school. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to make a difference. Honestly, I was tired of being one of the only Black kids in my class and being looked down on because of the color of my skin. When it came to applying for colleges, I knew I wanted to go far away, and I wanted to go to a historically black college. I also wanted to be surrounded by Black excellence and support people like me. Therefore, I applied to Spelman College. Once I got in, I was over the moon. This encouraged me to convince my peers in high school that they could also get into an HBCU and see how much of a great community there is behind them. In addition to why I wanted to come to an HBCU, social justice means a lot to me. Social justice to me means that everyone has equal opportunities in their life but also equity. Everyone deserves a fair shot regarding their race. To add on, the reason social justice is so important in education is that all students should feel safe and secure at the school they are attending. A big part of my life involves helping my peers and ones younger than me. I believe everyone deserves an equal opportunity to get the best education for them. When I researched how many Black children weren’t getting equal rights to academic success, I was angry. My anger toward the inequality in education is what pushed me to give back to my community and help them along the way. Since the beginning of my first year in college (2021), I have been tutoring elementary students. I make sure to let them know that they are doing great and give them the needed encouragement. I have also done community service at the Atlanta Food Bank to give back to the Atlanta community as well. In the future, aside from my career, I want to be a mentor and help guide African-American students on the right track to college.
