DeeAnn Denney Memorial Girl Scout Scholarship
Hi my name is Zoe Glover and when I was around 5 years old I joined my neighborhood Girl Scout Troop where I found amazing friendships that I knew would last a lifetime. I was very shy and quiet around new people but after I made those connections I blossomed like a daisy always does. In second grade I was able to ask some of my friends if they wanted to join my troop, I didn't expect anyone to show up to the meeting that same night so I was heavily surprised to see some of my friends with smiles on their faces.
In Elementary School my troop and I completed the Bronze Award, spreading awareness on Light Pollution and the concern we had towards it. But the Silver Award will always have a special place in my heart due to the meaning behind it.
At age 15 my troop and I completed the Silver Award; throughout the award process, determining a need for the community on how our project would make an impact, it taught me how to work with others and make compromises, a skill that I will continue to grow with all the challenges in this world. Once we all started hearing each other's ideas and thoughts, we came together and our Silver Award was a great outcome! Throughout the Silver Award process we continuously thought about our community and how it would help them with the reward of finishing our goal. We first had to use our speaking skills to approach the school administration to seek permission to be our community choice. Next, we had to decide how we were to come about with the supplies donated. We chose a community donation drive at our prospective middle schools and were able to receive donations. Our period poverty project helped supply a local middle school with feminine hygiene products and undergarments for girls who might experience accidents in school. The project was set in motion for the Student Council to take the lead as a yearly project going forward.
This project impacted me on how to be grateful for the needs I have and to always be willing to share with others who have little, To also understand how without basic needs affect the daily process of everyday living. The research showed that not only is a global concern, but it is our own neighborhood.
As the troop became older some of the girls started to leave Girl Scouts, even though it hurt to see some of my closest friends leave I knew I wanted to stay. So I then joined a new troop my freshman year of high school Troop 118102 within the San Jacinto Council. I was able to create new friendships and memories with other Girl Scouts, and it was great. Being a Girl Scout has taught me how to make friends, some are silver and the others are gold.
Evangelist Nellie Delores Blount Boyce Scholarship
Hello, my name is Zoe Glover, I am 17 years old and I attend Summer Creek High School where I am a part of many clubs and organizations. Some of the organizations and clubs I participate in at my school are Choir, National Honor Society, Student Council, Bulldog Buddies, Yearbook, Book Club, and Black Student Union. A few other organizations I am also a member of are Top Teens of America, NAACP Youth, and Girl Scouts. I am a proud participant of the Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Youth Program.
During my sophomore year of high school, I decided to join my school’s journalism class; I quickly fell in love with the class, the photography atmosphere, and always getting to hold a camera. At the end of that year, I made my school's Yearbook staff and I was so excited to take more pictures and keep building up my portfolio! As the school year started I didn't think I would be awarded the best photos as some of the other students in my class who were more experienced. My teacher at times would comment on how a picture I took was a great photo and every now and then they would be featured on our social media pages, but never knew of her intention of submitting any to a state competition. During the 2nd semester of my junior year, I found out one of my photos was entered into a Newspaper Competition. I was awarded an Honorable Mention for a Newspaper Best In Texas Award from the Texas Association of Journalism Educators for a news photo I took! I was so surprised when my teacher told me and I was so proud of myself; as were my family and friends. With winning this Honorable Mention I expanded my portfolio with other great photos that I took throughout the year. I have always loved to take pictures for fun, but with this opportunity of someone seeing potential in my eye for picture taking, this lets me know you never know who is looking at you and that other opportunities can come about through one simple submission. With this, I hope to find more opportunities to showcase my photography and help my portfolio in the future.
With this I hope to major in Business Marketing as well as minoring in Photography. I am committed to pursuing a higher education because I would love to expand my learning and knowledge of the photography world. My dream is to one day work for the NFL taking pictures and be able to promote their teams across social media.
