Bio

I am currently a rising sophomore at Columbia University studying Electrical Engineering. Alongside my involvement in STEM organizations such as the on-campus rocket design team, I have also collaborated with my hall council to listen to student voices and improve their quality of life. I hope to enhance the lives of Black and Brown people like myself not only through technology but also through a deep understanding of humanity, ensuring that the technology I design can best serve them.

One issue that has had a significant impact on my community is racial disparities in education. For example, Black students are more likely to be placed in lower-level classes, face harsher discipline, and have less access to advanced coursework. This has led to lower graduation rates, lower college enrollment rates, and lower rates of college completion, leaving many Black students without the necessary education and resources to access economic stability. In order to address this issue, we must first understand the root causes of educational disparities within the Black community. Research suggests that disparities in education are largely due to systemic racism, which has resulted in unequal funding for schools in Black communities, fewer high-quality teachers, and less access to resources. We must also recognize the impact of poverty on educational outcomes, as many Black students come from low-income households and lack access to basic necessities such as food and housing, leaving them unable to focus on their studies. This is of course tied back to the systemic oppression faced within the community that has resulted in such poverty through actions like redlining and the war on drugs, which have both contributed to the current circumstances of many African-Americans. To create a positive change in my community, we must focus on providing more equitable access to educational resources. This can be done by investing in programs that provide academic support to Black students, such as tutoring, mentoring, and after-school activities. We must also ensure that all schools have access to adequate funding, so that they can provide the necessary resources to their students. Furthermore, we must work to eliminate the racial bias that exists in the education system, by implementing measures such as implicit bias training for teachers and administrators we can begin to reform a structurally oppressive education system. Finally, it is imperative that we focus on creating pathways for Black students to access higher education. This can be done by providing more access to financial aid and scholarships, as well as creating programs that encourage Black students to pursue college and career opportunities. Additionally, we must work to make college more affordable for Black students by advocating for changes to policies such as tuition-free college and student loan forgiveness. By focusing on these efforts, we can create a positive change in the Black community and ensure that all students have access to the educational resources they need to succeed. This will not only help to close the racial disparities in education, but it will also create economic stability and opportunity for Black individuals and families. In doing so, we can build a better future for the next generation of Black Americans.
