As a first-generation student from an immigrant family, heading off to college, my journey has been one of resilience and determination. Moving to the United States in 2023 means leaving behind familiar surroundings, the culture I knew, and the friends I grew up with. Life in the United States is full of challenges, but it is also a journey full of opportunities!
I grew up in a low-income, single-parent household, and my mother’s death from cancer when I was young has had a profound impact on every aspect of my life. My mother has always been a pillar of strength for me, guiding me through difficult times and encouraging me to strive for success. My mom’s experience battling cancer has profoundly shaped my identity, values, and aspirations. When my mom was diagnosed with cancer, I was in middle school and life should have been simple, filled with friendships, school, and dreams. Instead, I found myself having to navigate the complexities of watching loved ones endure pain, uncertainty, and countless hospital visits, all while commuting between school and the hospital. My mom’s death has left an indelible mark on me, changing how I view the world and my role in it. When my mom was first diagnosed with cancer, I often felt helpless because I was the oldest in the family and struggled to balance school and studies under tremendous mental stress. I quickly learned how to emotionally support my family and take on responsibilities I never thought possible. From comforting my younger siblings to managing my emotions while excelling in school, I grew in ways that many of my peers could not. This life experience has endowed me with mental resilience and the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure - qualities that continue to this day and will have a profound impact on my future.
Despite the many cultural differences and language barriers after immigrating to the United States, I did not feel sorry for myself, but worked hard to learn English and adapt to life here. Through my efforts, I not only mastered English in just a few months, but also chose a difficult course like AP Statistics based on the recommendation of my teacher, which is undoubtedly a great affirmation of my ability! In addition, I found a part-time job to help my family!
As a first-generation student and immigrant whose native language is not English, I experienced a lot of anxiety, confusion, and helplessness during the college application process. My parents do not speak English, so they could not give me any help or even advice during the application process of American universities. I had to complete all the processes on my own. Although this process was challenging, it also taught me how to think and solve problems independently, and made me cherish the opportunity to receive education more. The road to college is not easy, but it is a journey full of determination, preparation and a strong sense of responsibility. This scholarship will allow me to spend more time focusing on my studies, without having to worry too much about money and working multiple jobs while taking the financial pressure off my father.
I believe that getting an education and learning is the easiest and best way to change your destiny! A spark can start a prairie fire. Finally, I want to tell everyone who has the same experience as me: never be afraid to try, never be afraid of difficulties, if God closes your door, then you open it again! This is how the door is used!

My mom passed away from cancer when I was in middle school, which had a profound impact on all aspects of my life - personal, academic, and financial. Her death created a deep emotional void, but also shaped my character and outlook on life in ways I never expected.
The emotional toll of losing my mother was enormous. She has always been my pillar of strength, guiding me through difficult times and encouraging me to strive for success. Since I was a child, she has nurtured and encouraged my learning ability and interests. Although my family was not wealthy, she bought me many books and tried her best to support me when I showed interest in anything. Even when she was ill, she always faced life positively and encouraged us to be strong and independent in the face of difficulties. I became more compassionate and understood how important it‘s to provide not only material support but also emotional and spiritual support to those who are facing challenges. My mother didn't go to college to receive higher education. She didn't even go to high school. But she always told me that learning is an important and happy thing, and she hoped that I would go to college no matter what. My mom always told me when she was alive: the significance of receiving higher education in college is not only to learn knowledge, but also a good opportunity to improve your horizons and expand your social circle! Someone who has gone to college speaks and thinks differently than someone who has not. Her belief in the power of education inspired me to continue to excel in my studies because I wanted to make her proud by fulfilling the dreams she had fulfilled for me.
Financially, my mom’s death had a significant impact on our family. My dad had to shoulder all the financial responsibilities, which put an additional strain on our already limited resources. My father made the decision for my siblings and I to move to the USA for our education and livelihood. Life in the USA has been a journey of challenges and opportunities. I began learning to balance school and extracurricular activities while working part-time. I became resourceful and sought scholarships and financial aid to ease the burden on my family. It wasn’t easy to juggle work, school, soccer, and adjusting to a new country, but I didn’t feel sorry for myself and worked hard to learn English and adjust to life here. Through my efforts, I not only mastered English in just a few months, but I also took a difficult course like AP Statistics based on my teacher’s recommendation and scored an A, which was undoubtedly a great affirmation of my abilities!
In many ways, the loss of my mother has been the driving force behind my determination to succeed in my academic and career goals. While her passing is still a source of pain, it also serves as a constant reminder of the importance of perseverance, empathy, and the power of education. In short, I believe I can succeed in the healthcare field. This journey will require dedication, hard work, and thoughtful financial planning, but I am committed to making a meaningful impact in the lives of others. With a clear plan and the determination to succeed, I believe I have the ability to achieve these goals. There is an old Chinese saying that a single spark can start a prairie fire. I‘ll use my meager strength to pass on the warmth and faith that my mother gave me, and help and influence more people!

My mom’s experience battling cancer has profoundly shaped my identity, values, and aspirations. This life experience has endowed me with mental toughness and the ability to remain calm and focused under pressure—qualities that continue to this day and will have a profound impact on my future. Second, it has deepened my empathy for others. During my mother’s illness, I took the bus to the hospital every day after school to care for her and be with her. Chemotherapy is very physically demanding, and watching my mother have to battle such a terrible disease taught me a lot about vulnerability and human frailty. During my time in the hospital with my mother, I also met a variety of patients who were battling painful illnesses and still faced life positively and sunny. This had a huge impact on me. Seeing the struggles faced by others taught me the importance of compassion, kindness, and positivity in the face of difficulties. This empathy guided my relationships, academic interests, and career aspirations. Whether it was through medicine, law, or advocacy, I longed to help others cope with challenges and find hope in adversity. Finally, it shaped my long-term goals. I was inspired by seeing the dedication of healthcare professionals and advocates who supported my mother and my family. My mother often talked to me about the importance of learning and pursuing higher education. She said: Learning is not only about increasing knowledge, but also about expanding your horizons and discovering the meaning and value of being human. I realized that I also wanted to contribute to society in a meaningful way - whether it was improving lives through healthcare or advocating for legal justice. This sense of mission has inspired my academic pursuits and shaped my desire to make a positive impact on others at a systemic level. I am eager to help and influence more people through my knowledge and abilities, and pass on the faith my mother gave me! Although my mother's death is a huge and irreparable loss, her experience has taught me valuable lessons about the power of the human spirit, the importance of family, and the lasting impact of love. It has taught me to cherish every moment, pursue excellence, help and influence more people, and live a meaningful life in her name! In the end, I want to tell everyone who has the same experience as me: Never be afraid to try, never be afraid of difficulties, and if God closes your door, then you open it again! Growing up in a low-income family in China and losing my mother at a very young age has shaped me into who I am today. Since moving to the USA in 2023, I've faced challenges in adapting to a new culture, balancing responsibilities, and pursuing my passion for soccer and education. The language barrier is one of the main challenges, and communicating with people and adapting to a completely different education system is daunting. However, I worked hard to improve my English through various efforts. By studying in school and actively communicating with classmates and teachers, I not only achieved excellent grades in school, but also improved my English level from almost zero to professional level in a few months. My teacher recommended me to study AP Statistics based on my excellent performance. These challenges taught me perseverance, time management, and not being shy to try the unknown, and also made me understand that no difficulty is insurmountable! The death of my mother left me with a deep emotional void, but also shaped my character and outlook on life in ways I never expected. The emotional blow of losing my mother was huge, and it also had a great impact on my family's financial situation. Instead of complaining about myself, I actively sought and seized opportunities. Opportunities always favor those who work hard, and I found a part-time job. It helped me improve my English and enabled me to help my family. As a student from a low-income single-parent family and a first-generation student, these experiences shaped me into a resilient, driven, and resourceful person. As an old Chinese saying goes: A single spark can start a prairie fire. I hope to use my knowledge and experience to help and encourage more people like me to face and defeat difficulties!

I am a driven person with a strong passion for making a positive impact in the world. I have experienced significant challenges in my own life, specifically my mother’s battle with cancer, which has instilled in me a strong sense of empathy, resilience, and a desire to help others. This has fueled my interest in healthcare and social justice, and has guided my academic and professional pursuits.
My business idea is to create a platform that connects people facing chronic illnesses like cancer to a network of support services—including mental health support, personalized medical advice, and community engagement. The damage that chemotherapy causes to patients is significant and irreversible, and even with such painful treatments, there is no 100% chance of recovery. This is not only physically painful but also mentally stressful for patients. I hope this platform can use technology and data analytics to provide tailored resources, peer support groups, and educational content to enable individuals to manage their condition while maintaining a high quality of spiritual life. My goal is to make this service available globally, with a special focus on underserved communities that lack comprehensive medical resources!
I am passionate about this business idea because I have seen firsthand how overwhelming and isolating a health crisis can be. During my mother’s illness, I witnessed how she navigated the healthcare system, sought the right support, and managed emotional stress. I hope this platform can ease the burden for others and give them the tools and connections they need to feel empowered in their health journey and more motivated to treat!
The impact this platform could have is huge. It will break down barriers to access services, help people feel less isolated, and better understand how to manage their health. Not only will it save lives and reduce stress, but it will also improve the mental and emotional well-being of people with chronic conditions. By focusing on comprehensive emotional, physical, and practical support, this platform will redefine the way we approach chronic care and make healthcare more inclusive and accessible!
I have always been passionate about creating solutions for unmet needs. I see entrepreneurship as a way to challenge the status quo and contribute to a future that prioritizes people's health and well-being. This motivation comes from my own life experiences and the desire to create change for others. There is a brilliant and warm entrepreneur in China named Lei Jun. He founded a household brand called Xiaomi. He said he had a dream: to bring Chinese products made with this philosophy to the world so that everyone in the world can enjoy the fun of technological innovation from China: insist on making good products that touch people's hearts and are reasonably priced, so that everyone in the world can enjoy the good life brought by technology! His story deeply touched me and made me realize that success is not about how much money you make, but how much value you create for people!
Setbacks and challenges are inevitable in the process of starting a business, but they do not define success. Failure is the mother of success. I learned that all setbacks can become a ladder to success! I want to build a business that is not only successful but also has a meaningful and lasting impact on people's lives. This journey has been very meaningful, and as I continue to grow with my goal, I am full of expectations for the future!

Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Growing up in a single-parent and low-income family was a unique experience that taught me resilience, responsibility, and empathy. At a very young age, I realized that not everything in life comes easy, and many goals require hard work and sacrifice to achieve. My mother raised me and my siblings alone while my father was away from home, which made me feel her selflessness and perseverance, and also taught me how to find hope in adversity.
This experience shaped my perspective on the future. My mother died of cancer when I was very young. I slowly learned to set goals and achieve them with perseverance under the mental pain and physical pressure. Without my mother's support, every opportunity was hard-won for me. I learned to cherish every opportunity and work hard to turn my limited resources into motivation to achieve my goals. In life, I always try to understand and help others with empathy, because I know that many people may be going through difficulties like me. I hope that I can use my meager power to influence and help more people!
My future goals are deeply influenced by this upbringing. Whether I become a lawyer, a physician assistant, or choose another career in the future, I hope that my efforts can influence others, especially those who feel helpless due to environmental or resource limitations. In more detail, as a lawyer, I can help those who do not have enough resources to fight for their rights; as a physician assistant, I can use my medical knowledge to help patients find suitable treatment plans. This spirit of "helping others" comes from my upbringing. My mother always lends a hand when she encounters beggars, and always helps others enthusiastically and patiently when others need help. I hope to pass on my mother's beliefs, and being helpful has become the core value of my future career path!
In addition, the background of a single-parent family makes me pay special attention to the significance of education and personal growth. Although my mother did not go to high school, she often told me that learning is an interesting and important thing. Receiving higher education in college can not only learn more knowledge, but also increase knowledge and improve vision. So I firmly believe that knowledge can change destiny, and the power to change destiny can not only help myself, but also benefit more people! Therefore, no matter what career I choose in the future, I hope that I can become a bridge to connect people in need and resources to solve problems. I hope that my efforts can not only help individuals, but also promote the development and change of the community on a larger scale.
Although I am not completely sure about my career direction now, I believe that the resilience, sense of responsibility and empathy formed during my growth will always guide me and help me achieve my goal of "doing good for society". This belief makes me confident about the future, and I look forward to using my talents to influence more people's lives and create positive changes! I hope that through my work, people's lives will become better because of my existence. I think this is not only a tribute to my mother, but also a way to pass on love and health! I know that the power of one person is small, but I believe that sparks can ignite the fire of the prairie. I am willing to continue to work hard and use my small power to help and influence more people to make the world a better place!

For me, community service is not only an obligation, but also a responsibility and mission. It represents gratitude and giving back to society, and it is also an opportunity to improve the lives of others through practical actions. Community service can help us understand the needs and feelings of others more deeply, strengthen the connection between each other, convey positive energy, and make the world a better place. I believe that by helping others, we can also grow into more responsible and empathetic people.
My understanding stems from my different life experiences in China and the United States. In China, I grew up in a culture that emphasizes collective spirit, and the mutual help between community neighbors has deeply influenced me. In school and sports teams, I have participated in many teamwork projects and learned the power of care and support from the people around me. More than seven years of soccer journey and collective life have shaped my concepts and character. As a team sport, soccer not only taught me tenacity and never giving up, but more importantly, it taught me the meaning of teamwork and the importance of cooperation. After coming to the United States, I felt more personal freedom and opportunities for expression, but also witnessed some problems of unequal resource distribution. This in-depth experience of the two cultures made me realize that no matter what environment, community service has always been an important bridge connecting people. I hope I can use community service as a bridge to connect people more closely!
My understanding of community service is also closely related to my mother's experience. My mother is a strong and kind person. While facing cancer, she still remains optimistic and caring for others. During her illness, I witnessed the support given by many people in the community, which made me deeply realize that helping others and receiving help is a cycle and an important manifestation of community cohesion. My mother's tenacity and selflessness have deeply influenced me and made me more determined to give back to the community through my career and actions!
In the future, I hope to give back to the community more comprehensively through my career choices and actions. Use the knowledge and experience I learned in college to apply to real life and build a more complete and warm community! In addition, I hope to combine my life experiences in China and the United States to create a cross-cultural community environment. Not only in terms of culture, but also in terms of humanistic care. Spread different cultures and increase the tolerance of people from different countries to other cultures. The world today is a diverse world, and I think community service should also be diversified. For teenagers, the Internet and electronic products have a great negative impact on them most of the time. I plan to convey positive life concepts through voluntary training camps or health education activities, motivating them to pursue their dreams, go out of the house, and develop a healthy lifestyle.
All in all, I hope that through my own efforts, I can not only continue the strength and faith given to me by my mother, but also integrate what I have learned and felt from my life experiences in China and the United States into my actions. I believe that this is not only a return to the community, but also an important step to create more inclusiveness and opportunities for society! It is an important step to make the bond between people closer and make the world warmer!

Losing my mother to cancer when I was in middle school had a profound impact on every aspect of my life – personally, academically, and financially. Her death created a deep emotional void, but also shaped my character and outlook on life in ways I never expected. The emotional loss of losing my mother was enormous. She has always been my pillar of strength, guiding me through difficult situations and encouraging me to strive for success. She nurtured and encouraged my learning ability and interests since I was a child. Even though my family wasn't rich, she bought me many books and supported me as much as she could when I showed interest in anything. Even when she was suffering from illness, she always faced life positively and encouraged us to be strong and independent in the face of difficulties. I became more compassionate and understood how important it's to provide not only physical support to those who are facing challenges, but also emotional and spiritual support. My mother didn't go to college for higher education. She didn't even go to high school. But she always told me that learning is an important and happy thing, and she hoped that I would go to college no matter what. She felt that going to college would not only receive higher education but also expand my knowledge and horizons. Her belief in the power of education motivated me to continue to excel academically because I wanted to make her proud by fulfilling her dreams for me. Financially, my mother’s death had a significant impact on our family. My father had to shoulder all the financial responsibilities, which put an additional strain on our already limited resources. This made it even more difficult to afford basic needs, not to mention the expenses associated with higher education. For the sake of our education and life, my father decided to move me and my younger siblings to the USA. Life in the USA has been a journey filled with challenges and opportunities. I began learning to balance school and extracurricular activities while working part-time. I became resourceful in seeking scholarships and financial aid to ease the burden on my family. Juggling work, school, soccer, and adjusting to a new country wasn't easy, but it further strengthened my commitment to hard work and perseverance. I learned to prioritize my time effectively and balance my academic responsibilities with work and extracurricular activities. It has become an integral part of my journey to achieve my goals. In many ways, losing my mom has been a driving force in my determination to succeed in my academic and career goals. Receiving this scholarship would significantly alleviate my family’s financial burden, allowing me to focus on my education and personal growth It has made me more focused and motivated to pursue a healthcare career where I can help others with their own challenges. It made me more determined in my goals and more confident in the unknown future. While her absence is still a source of pain, it also serves as a constant reminder of the importance of perseverance, empathy, and the power of education. In summary, I believe I can achieve success in the healthcare field. This journey will require dedication, hard work, and thoughtful financial planning, but I'm committed to making a meaningful impact on others’ lives as a Physician Assistant. With a clear plan in place and the determination to succeed, I'm confident in my ability to achieve these goals. I hope I can use my small power to help more people and pass on my mom's beliefs!
Bright Lights Scholarship
Receiving this scholarship would significantly alleviate my family’s financial burden, allowing me to focus on my education and personal growth without the stress of excessive work hours. As a low-income Immigrant student and first-generation college student who recently moved to the United States from China in 2023, this funding represents not only recognition of my efforts but also an essential opportunity to navigate the challenges of adapting to a new environment. It will enable me to gain practical experience, explore opportunities in the healthcare field, and pursue my dream of becoming a healthcare professional, such as a Physician Assistant. Additionally, this support will provide me with the resources and time to participate in volunteer activities and internships, helping me develop the skills needed to better serve future patients. Moving to the United States was a significant turning point in my life. Adjusting to a new culture, language, and education system has been both challenging and rewarding. Soccer became my bridge to building connections and finding a sense of belonging in this new country. As a soccer player for seven years, I’ve not only made new friends through the sport but also experienced how teamwork, resilience, and discipline transcend cultural boundaries. However, I’ve also witnessed firsthand the impact of injuries on athletes, both physically and mentally. I have personally faced the challenges of being sidelined by injuries. Before an important match, I suffered an ankle sprain that forced me to rest for several weeks, preventing me from participating in regular training and competition. During that time, I was not only worried about how the injury would affect my performance but also felt a deep sense of isolation and helplessness from being unable to stand alongside my teammates. For many athletes, injuries are not just a physical challenge but also a psychological one. Losing the rhythm of daily training, facing the frustration of paused progress, and feeling uncertain about the future can create immense mental pressure. That experience made me more aware of the importance of mental health for athletes and helped me realize that healthcare should address not only physical recovery but also psychological well-being and holistic health. My passion for healthcare is also deeply rooted in my personal experience with my mother’s illness. My mother passed away from cancer when I was in my third year of middle school. Her passing gave me a profound understanding of the importance of health and the critical role that compassionate healthcare professionals play in providing both care and hope. This experience, combined with my own challenges as an athlete and an immigrant, has inspired me to pursue a career where I can make a meaningful impact on others’ lives. With the support of this scholarship, I aspire to contribute to the field of holistic health and healing by promoting integrated approaches that combine physical rehabilitation, mental health support, and preventive care. I believe health is not just the absence of illness but a comprehensive state of physical, mental, and social well-being. My goal is to focus on patients’ overall needs, helping them recover physically while rebuilding their confidence and hope. I am especially passionate about providing support to athletes, helping them fully recover from injuries, return to the field, and continue pursuing their dreams. As someone who has faced significant life changes and challenges, I hope to use my experiences to inspire and support others, whether they are patients recovering from illness or athletes working through setbacks. I also aim to promote the importance of health and prevention, empowering more people to take control of their well-being and their future!
Maggie's Way- International Woman’s Scholarship
Growing in a low-income family from China, which shaped me into who I am today. Since moving to the USA with my family in 2023, I‘ve faced challenges like Maggie in adapting to a new culture, balancing responsibilities, and pursuing my passion for soccer and education. Despite the difficulties, I was determined to succeed. Moving to the USA to live and study brought its own set of challenges. The language barrier was one of the main obstacles, and communicating with people and adapting to a completely different education system was daunting. However, I worked hard to improve my English through various efforts. By studying in school and actively communicating with classmates and teachers, I not only achieved excellent grades in school, but also improved my English from almost zero to professional level.
Also, Maggie's fearless spirit also inspired me. In China, I was a member of the Zhanjiang City Women's Soccer Team. In my 7-year soccer journey, I have experienced physical challenges such as scorching sun, heavy rain, and snow, as well as the pain of being unable to participate due to an accidental injury on the eve of a game. These challenges taught me the meaning of tenacity, breaking through myself, and never giving up until the last moment. It also made me understand that there is no difficulty that cannot be overcome as long as you believe in success! Whether on the soccer field or in American life, I’ll strive to persevere and reach higher!
The courage and perseverance that Maggie demonstrated in the face of life’s challenges resonated deeply with my own experience during my mother’s illness. My mother died of cancer when I was a child. Watching her battle the disease left a lasting and profound impact on me. Her death created a deep emotional void, but also shaped my character and outlook on life in ways I'll never have expected. Just as Maggie chose to hold on to her passion and pursuit of life in the face of cancer, I found strength to sustain myself in my mother’s illness. I valued my health and family more and set a goal to play a role in the medical field in the future to help patients like my mother get better treatment and support. This experience instilled in me a passion for medicine and the resilience to face future challenges.
Maggie’s courage reminds me that even in the most difficult times, you can still choose to face difficulties and move forward bravely! As a student from a low-income immigrant family and a first-generation college student, I experienced many anxiety, confusion, and helplessness during the college application process. My parents don't speak English, so they couldn't give me any help or even advice in the process of applying to American universities. I must complete all the processes by myself, from researching schools to filling out applications, to preparing personal statements and submitting materials. Although this process was challenging, it also taught me how to think independently and solve problems, and made me cherish the opportunity to receive an education more.
We all showed the ability to grow in the face of difficulties. Maggie overcame the challenges of life with her courage and perseverance, and I also continued to improve myself through hard work in sports, academics, and work. This desire for growth keeps me confident in the face of difficulties. I hope that through continuous hard work and learning, I‘ll use my knowledge and beliefs to help more people like Maggie, so that everyone who’s facing setbacks can have the courage to start over and keep trying!

I chose to go into healthcare because of my love for science and helping others, and because my life experiences have given me a deep understanding of the importance of health and recovery. More specifically, I have loved soccer since I was a child, and my 7-year soccer journey has allowed me to appreciate the benefits of sports for both the body and the mind, and has also made me deeply aware that health is the foundation for pursuing my dreams. I have experienced the test of injury during my soccer journey, and I know the pain of not being able to play due to injuries. With the help of medical professionals, I was able to recover and continue to love this sport. This experience made me eager to work in healthcare, hoping to help others recover their health through my own efforts and regain confidence in life. My mother's experience also had a profound impact on my choice of the medical field. She died of cancer when I was in the third grade of junior high school. As the oldest child in the family, it is my responsibility to take good care of my younger siblings and my family. During my mother's battle with the disease, I witnessed the care and support provided by medical professionals, not only physical treatment, but also spiritual comfort. This made me feel the warmth and strength of the medical community, and also made me determined to become someone who brings hope to others in the future. In addition, as a woman, I hope to show tenacity, care and patience in the medical field. I hope to become a physician assistant or physical therapist, using the perseverance and teamwork I learned in football training and competition to help me provide better services to patients in the medical profession. I pay special attention to people who love sports because I know how important health is for them to pursue their dreams. In addition, I hope that my work can pay special attention to patients from disadvantaged backgrounds and help them overcome the obstacles of insufficient medical resources. I come from a low-income family, and I know the difficulties that limited medical resources bring to the lives of many people, as well as the frustration and blow that diseases bring to low-income families. I hope that through my own efforts, I can provide more people with fair and high-quality medical services, while improving their quality of life. By receiving healthcare education, I hope that I can give patients confidence and hope like those who have helped me in my future career path. Whether it is someone who is sick like my mother, or an athlete like me who needs support because of an injury, I hope that through my work, their lives will be better because of my existence. I think this is not only a tribute to my mother, but also a way to pass on love and health! I know that the power of an individual is small, but I believe that a spark can start a prairie fire. I am willing to continue to work hard to use my fragile female power to help and influence more people and make the world a better place!

As a first-generation student, the road to college was not an easy one, but it was a journey filled with determination, preparation, and a strong sense of responsibility. I believe that getting an education and learning is the easiest and best way to change your destiny. Coming from a low-income family, my decision to pursue higher education was not only my personal dream, but also a way to create a better life for my family and honor my mother.
My mother passed away from cancer when I was in middle school, and she always emphasized the importance of education as a way to overcome challenges and create a better future. Her belief in the power of knowledge has been one of my main motivations for taking this path, and it also made me more determined to pursue higher education in college. In the USA, I began to learn how to balance school, sports, and part-time work, which taught me how to manage time effectively and focus on my goals. Playing soccer for seven years taught me the importance of tenacity, self-discipline, and cooperation. My part-time job cultivated my stress tolerance and communication skills, and also relieved the financial pressure on my parents. Adjusting to life in the USA, especially as an immigrant, added another layer of complexity to my preparation. I had to adapt to a new language, culture, and education system. This experience has made me more adaptable and resilient, and has laid the foundation for my future goals.
As a first-generation student and an immigrant who does not speak English, I experienced many anxiety, confusion, and helplessness during the college application process. My parents don't speak English, so they were unable to give me any help or even advice in the process of applying to American universities. I had to complete all the processes on my own, from researching schools to filling out applications, to preparing personal statements and submitting materials. Although this process was challenging, it also taught me how to think and solve problems independently, and made me cherish the opportunity of education more.
The experience of living in China and the USA has made me a stronger person. This cross-cultural growth experience not only taught me to adapt to different environments, but also made me more determined in my beliefs and future goals. While in China, I learned hard work and resilience, and in the USA, I learned how to embrace diversity and find my place. These experiences have made me realize that no matter what difficulties I encounter, as long as I keep working hard and believing, every experience in life, whether good or bad, will become a stepping stone on my way forward and drive me to continue to grow.
Throughout the journey, my mother's expectations have been a constant source of motivation for me. She told me that no matter how hard life gets, education is the one thing that can't be taken away. This wisdom has kept me going through moments of doubt and uncertainty. It has been a guiding light for me as I work to prepare for college. Not only for myself, but also for my family who have always supported me. I hope that I can use my small power to help and influence more people who have experienced great setbacks but are still optimistic and working hard to pursue their goals. I'm determined to make the most of this opportunity, not only for myself, but for others, and to honor my mother's belief that hard work, dedication, and education can change lives!

Losing my mother to cancer when I was in middle school had a profound impact on every aspect of my life—personally, academically, and financially. Her passing created a deep emotional void, but it also shaped my character and my perspective on life in ways I could never have anticipated.
The emotional toll of losing my mother was immense. She had been my pillar of strength, guiding me through difficult situations and encouraging me to strive for success. After her passing, I had to cope with grief and loss at a very young age. I became more empathetic, understanding how important it is to offer support not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally to those facing challenges.
Academically, losing my mother forced me to grow up quickly. I had to take on more responsibilities at home, which meant balancing schoolwork with household chores and taking care of my younger siblings. The emotional strain of dealing with grief sometimes affected my ability to focus on school, and I struggled with feelings of loneliness and isolation. However, I also developed a strong sense of perseverance. I realized that education was one of the best ways to honor my mother’s memory and to build a future for myself and my family. Her belief in the power of education pushed me to continue excelling academically, even when it seemed overwhelming. My loss gave me a sense of urgency and determination to succeed, as I wanted to make her proud by fulfilling the dreams she had for me.
Financially, my mother’s passing had a significant impact on our household. As a single-income family, my father had to shoulder all the financial responsibilities, which placed additional strain on our already limited resources. This made it more difficult to afford basic needs, let alone the expenses associated with higher education. I realized that in order to pursue college and achieve my dreams, I would need to find ways to support myself and contribute to my family’s financial situation. I worked part-time jobs while balancing school and extracurricular activities, and I became resourceful in seeking out scholarships and financial aid to reduce the burden on my family. The financial challenges have been tough, but they have also taught me the value of hard work, discipline, and self-reliance.
Additionally, I moved to the United States in 2023. I have a part-time job to help my family. Juggling work with school, soccer, and adjusting to a new country has not been easy, but it has further reinforced my commitment to hard work and perseverance. I have learned to prioritize my time effectively, balancing my academic responsibilities with my job and extracurricular activities. My work not only helps with my living expenses, but also teaches me valuable skills such as time management, communication, and customer service. It has become an integral part of my journey toward achieving my goals.
In many ways, the loss of my mother has been a driving force behind my determination to succeed in my academic and career goals. It made me more focused and motivated to pursue a career in healthcare, where I can help others navigate their own challenges. While her absence continues to be a source of pain, it also serves as a constant reminder of the importance of perseverance, empathy, and the power of education. Moving to the United States has only strengthened my resolve to succeed, and I am determined to make the most of the opportunities I have, both academically and personally.
First-Gen Futures Scholarship
I have chosen to pursue higher education because I believe it is the foundation that will allow me to achieve both my personal and professional goals. As a first-generation student, the path to college has not been easy, but it has been a journey filled with determination, preparation, and a deep sense of responsibility. I come from a low-income family, and the decision to pursue higher education is not only a personal dream but also a way to create a better life for my family and honor my mother’s memory. My mother, who passed away from cancer when I was in middle school, always stressed the importance of education as a way to overcome challenges and build a brighter future. Her belief in the power of knowledge has been one of my main motivations to pursue this path.
Being a first-generation student means that I’ve had to navigate many aspects of college preparation on my own. I had to learn about the application process, scholarship opportunities, and college life, which were all unfamiliar to me at first. However, I sought guidance from teachers, school counselors, and mentors to understand the steps I needed to take. I also attended workshops and college preparation programs specifically designed for first-generation students to ensure I was fully equipped for this transition.
In addition to academic preparation, I have also taken steps to develop the personal skills necessary for success in college. I have balanced my schoolwork, sports, and part-time job, which taught me how to manage my time effectively and stay focused on my goals. Playing soccer for seven years and working part-time has taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of collaboration—skills that are essential for navigating the rigors of college. I also made sure to seek out volunteer opportunities to build my leadership and communication skills, which will help me engage with my peers, professors, and the broader community during my college years.
Adjusting to life in the United States, especially as an immigrant, has added another layer of complexity to my preparation. When I moved here in 2023, I had to adjust to a new language, culture, and education system. This experience has made me more adaptable and resourceful, as I have learned to find solutions to challenges and seek help when needed. It has also deepened my sense of empathy and my ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, which I believe will be valuable in both my academic and future healthcare career.
Throughout this journey, my mother’s expectations have been a constant source of motivation. She always told me that no matter how hard life gets, education is the one thing that can’t be taken away. This wisdom has kept me going through moments of doubt and uncertainty. It has been my guiding light as I worked hard to prepare for college. Her belief in me and her vision for my future are what drive me to succeed and pursue my dreams, not just for myself, but for the family that has always supported me.
With this scholarship and the opportunities higher education provides, I am determined to continue my academic journey and become a healthcare professional, particularly a Physician Assistant. The lessons I’ve learned as a first-generation student—resilience, time management, and seeking help when necessary—have prepared me for the challenges of college and beyond. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity, both for myself and to honor my mother’s legacy of hard work, dedication, and the belief that education can transform lives!
Jim Coots Scholarship
Receiving this scholarship would significantly alleviate my family’s financial burden, allowing me to focus on my education and personal growth without the stress of excessive work hours. As a low-income student who recently moved to the United States in 2023, this funding represents not only recognition of my efforts but also an essential opportunity to navigate the challenges of adapting to a new environment.
Tamurai's Adventure Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have always had a desire to make a positive impact on others, which is one of the reasons that led me to pursue a career in healthcare and become a Physician Assistant (PA).
The first step to becoming a PA is to obtain a bachelor's degree in biology or a related field. This degree will provide a solid foundation in human biology, anatomy, and physiology, all of which are essential for a career in healthcare. To achieve this goal, I will take advantage of the academic resources available at the university, including faculty mentorship, tutoring, and research opportunities. Another important short-term goal is to gain practical experience in healthcare. I will actively seek out internship and volunteer opportunities at hospitals, clinics, and rehabilitation centers. These experiences will not only help me develop practical skills, but will also allow me to network with professionals in the field. My goal is to obtain my first internship or volunteer position within the first two years of my undergraduate education. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan to apply for PA programs within 1-2 years of completing my bachelor's degree, with the goal of starting at age 23 or 24. After completing PA school, my next step is to pass the Physician Assistant National Certification Exam and apply for licensure. I plan to obtain licensure within 1-2 years of completing my education, which would be around age 28 or 29.
I plan to specialize in a field such as orthopedics or physical therapy. As a 7-year soccer player, I know how painful sports injuries can be. As a PA in the field of orthopedics or physical therapy, I will not only help athletes in the community, but also the elderly and women. They also have needs for clients and physical therapy. My mom passed away when I was 14 years old, which had a huge impact on me. Her late-stage chemotherapy was very painful and the daily chemotherapy almost exhausted her. She was transferred to many hospitals and could not recover. These things made me realize the pain and helplessness of being tortured by illness and gave me the idea of studying in the medical field.
I hope to be able to help people, especially those who are tortured by illness like my mom. She was very serious about my education and even though my family was not wealthy, she had made it clear to me that I had to go to college no matter what. In short, I believe I can succeed in the field of healthcare. This journey will require dedication, hard work, and thoughtful financial planning, but I am committed to making a meaningful impact in the lives of others as a physician assistant. With a clear plan and determination to succeed and my mom's wishes for me when she was alive, I believe I have the ability to achieve these goals and help more people!

Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have been driven by a desire to make a positive impact on others, which has led me to pursue a career in healthcare as a Physician Assistant (PA). This essay outlines my short-term and long-term goals, the steps I plan to take to reach them, and the resources, budget, and timing required to ensure my success.
The first step in my journey toward becoming a PA is to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field. This degree will provide a solid foundation in human biology, anatomy, and physiology, all of which are essential for a healthcare career. To achieve this, I will take advantage of academic resources available at my university, including faculty mentorship, tutoring, and research opportunities. I plan to graduate within four years, using scholarships, FAFSA, and part-time work to cover the estimated cost of $10,000 for tuition, books, and living expenses in my first year.
Another critical short-term goal is to gain hands-on experience in healthcare. I will actively seek out internships and volunteer opportunities at hospitals, clinics, and rehabilitation centers. These experiences will not only help me build practical skills but will also allow me to network with professionals in the field. Although some internships may be unpaid, I plan to prioritize gaining experience over financial compensation. My goal is to secure my first internship or volunteer position within the first two years of my undergraduate education.
Once I complete my undergraduate degree, I'll apply to PA programs. This requires preparing for exams such as the GRE, ensuring that my academic performance and healthcare experience meet the prerequisites, and submitting strong application materials, including essays, letters of recommendation, and clinical experience documentation. PA programs are expensive, with tuition ranging from $40,000 to $70,000 for the duration of the program. To fund this, I will apply for financial aid, scholarships, and student loans. I anticipate applying to PA programs within 1-2 years of completing my Bachelor’s degree, aiming to begin my studies at age 23 or 24.
To offset the costs of PA school, I will work part-time while enrolled, aiming to minimize student debt. Additionally, I will apply for scholarships and other forms of financial aid to ensure that I can cover living expenses and tuition. I estimate that PA school will cost around $50,000 per year, and my plan is to work 15-20 hours per week during the program to contribute to this budget.
Upon completing PA school, my next step is passing the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam and applying for licensure. The exam and licensure process costs approximately $1,000, which I will budget for while in PA school. I plan to be licensed within 1-2 years of completing my education, at approximately age 28 or 29.
I intend to specialize in a field such as orthopedics or physical therapy. To achieve this, I will pursue continuing education opportunities, including additional certifications and training, and attend professional conferences to stay current with industry developments. The cost of continuing education will be part of my professional budget, which I will allocate a portion of my salary to. My goal is to advance in my career within 2-3 years of becoming a licensed PA.
In summary, I believe I can achieve success in the healthcare field. This journey will require dedication, hard work, and thoughtful financial planning, but I am committed to making a meaningful impact on others’ lives as a Physician Assistant. With a clear plan in place and the determination to succeed, I am confident in my ability to achieve these goals.

My athletic journey has been shaped by resilience, determination, and a deep passion for soccer. From my early days in China to my experience competing in the United States, soccer has been more than just a sport—it’s been a driving force in my life. My mother, despite our family’s financial struggles, was my biggest supporter. She encouraged me to pursue soccer even when we couldn’t afford expensive training or equipment. Her belief in me taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and self-belief, showing me that passion and dedication can overcome obstacles, no matter the circumstances.
Competing at provincial and national levels in China as part of the Zhanjiang Women’s Soccer Team, I achieved first-place finishes in several competitions. These experiences not only tested my physical endurance but also taught me invaluable lessons about teamwork, discipline, and resilience. There were both victories and setbacks, and it was through these challenges that I learned how to grow. One of the most defining moments of my journey came during high school when I worked tirelessly to earn a starting position for a provincial competition. I trained late after practice, pushing myself beyond my limits. Although I wasn’t selected, this experience taught me a critical lesson: success is not always guaranteed, but the growth, strength, and resilience gained through effort are the true rewards.
When I moved to the United States in 2023, soccer once again became my bridge to a new life. Adjusting to a new culture and environment was difficult, but soccer helped me connect with others, build friendships, and find a sense of belonging. It allowed me to share my culture with teammates while also learning from theirs, which helped me adapt to my new surroundings and made me feel at home.
These experiences, combined with my continued dedication to soccer, have led to multiple offers from D3 and NAIA programs and many D2 coaches are contacting me. These opportunities not only reflect the recognition of my hard work but also serve as an inspiration to aim higher. I am determined to step onto larger stages where I can continue to develop my skills and reach new heights, both as an athlete and as an individual.
Soccer has taught me that it is not just about playing the game but about personal growth, building relationships, and inspiring others. I hope to use my experiences to mentor younger athletes, teaching them the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and inclusivity. I want to encourage others to push through challenges and remind them that growth comes from effort, not just success.
Beyond soccer, I plan to apply the discipline and resilience I’ve learned to a career in healthcare. Whether as a physical therapist assistant, physician assistant, or another role, I want to inspire others to pursue wellness and growth in their own lives. Soccer has shaped who I am today and will continue to guide my personal and professional aspirations.
I will continue playing soccer as long as I am able. It’s not just a sport to me—it’s a lifelong commitment. I am determined to keep pushing myself and achieving new goals, using every opportunity to grow and inspire others. As I move forward in my athletic and academic journey, I will always carry with me the lessons learned, the values instilled in me by my mother, and the belief that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.

My mother passed away from cancer when I was in the third year of middle school, and this experience profoundly shaped my life. She was a strong and optimistic person who, even during her illness, remained full of hope and enthusiasm for life. Watching her battle cancer gave me a deep appreciation for the value of health and the critical role that medical professionals play in providing care and comfort. Her resilience and determination inspired me to approach challenges with strength, and her journey made me realize how transformative a career in healthcare could be for individuals and their families.
Soccer has also been a cornerstone of my life, teaching me lessons that extend far beyond the field. In China, I was a member of the Zhanjiang Women’s Soccer Team and competed in numerous provincial and national tournaments, often earning first-place honors. My time on the team taught me discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. I vividly remember my freshman year of high school, when I trained for hours after practice, determined to secure a starting position. Although I wasn’t selected, the experience taught me the value of effort and the importance of resilience in the face of setbacks. Soccer also instilled in me a sense of purpose and belonging, which carried over into other areas of my life, shaping my character and work ethic.
In 2023, I moved to the United States, an experience that marked a major turning point in my life. The transition was both exciting and daunting, as I had to adapt to a new culture, language, and educational system. However, soccer became a universal language for me. It allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, bridging gaps that initially felt overwhelming. My teammates and coaches not only helped me improve my skills but also welcomed me into their community, making me feel valued and understood. These connections helped me navigate the challenges of adjusting to a new environment and reinforced my belief in the importance of human connection—something I hope to incorporate into my future work in healthcare.
These experiences—losing my mother, playing competitive soccer, and moving to a new country—have all shaped my desire to pursue a career in healthcare. They’ve taught me the value of hard work, the importance of community, and the need for empathy when supporting others through difficult times. I am particularly drawn to becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) or a Physical Therapist, roles that allow for both direct patient care and meaningful relationships. I want to be the kind of professional who not only helps patients heal physically but also provides them with emotional support and encouragement as they navigate their health challenges.
Ultimately, my goal is to bring compassion, warmth, and a sense of hope to the healthcare field. Whether it’s through creating personalized treatment plans or simply listening to a patient’s concerns, I want to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Losing my mother and moving to a new country were some of the hardest experiences I’ve faced, but they have given me clarity about the path I want to take: using my knowledge, skills, and personal experiences to empower others and help them overcome life’s challenges.

W. Tong and A.C. Wong Legacy Scholarship
I am from China and moved to the United States in August 2023. Growing up, I was surrounded by resilience and love, especially from my mother, who played a pivotal role in shaping my values and aspirations. My mother passed away from illness when I was in the third year of middle school, a loss that deeply impacted me. Despite her limited education, she always emphasized the importance of learning, repeatedly telling me that I must go to college to broaden my horizons and expand my knowledge. She believed education could open doors to a better future, and her words have stayed with me ever since.
My mother wholeheartedly supported my growth and interests. Even though our family had limited financial resources, she made sure to provide me with a variety of reading materials, including novels and magazines, to nurture my curiosity. She believed these experiences would enrich my understanding of the world and inspire me to dream big. Additionally, she encouraged me to pursue my love for soccer. Recognizing my passion for the sport, she made significant sacrifices to send me to a boarding school in Zhanjiang during middle school to receive professional soccer training with the Zhanjiang women’s soccer team. During this time, I attended many official country championships. This opportunity helped me grow both as an athlete and as an individual, teaching me valuable lessons in independence, resilience, and teamwork.
In August 2023, I moved to the United States, marking a significant transition in my life. Adapting to a new environment, language, and culture was challenging, but I quickly found ways to balance school, work, and soccer. Shortly after arriving, I began working part-time to support myself and help my family. Juggling full-time schoolwork and a job was difficult, especially with eight courses taught entirely in English. However, I was determined to succeed. My hard work paid off when, in my junior year, I earned seven A’s and one B, which fueled my confidence to continue excelling academically.
In my senior year, my teacher recommended I take AP Statistics due to my academic performance, a suggestion I embraced as an opportunity to further develop my analytical and problem-solving skills. My senior year schedule was demanding; I attended school until 2:40 p.m., participated in sports activities until 4:30 p.m., worked until 9:30 p.m., and then returned home to do homework. Although this routine was challenging, it taught me time management and perseverance, helping me balance my academic, athletic, and work commitments.
I also joined my school’s soccer team, which allowed me to connect with new friends and continue developing as an athlete. Soccer has always been a source of joy and motivation, and it played a crucial role in helping me adjust to life in the United States. My dedication to soccer also led me to participate in college athletic recruitment. My hard work earned me several scholarships from NAIA women’s soccer programs, and I am currently in contact with the NCAA D2 women’s soccer coach at Colorado School of Mines, a school that aligns with both my academic and athletic goals.
Looking back on my journey, I am incredibly grateful for the lessons my mother taught me. Her unwavering belief in the power of education and her constant encouragement to pursue my dreams have shaped the person I am today. I want to study in college and eventually go into the medical field to help millions of people like my mother who are suffering from illness. I’m determined to honor her legacy by continuing to seek knowledge, help others, and make a positive impact on the world.
