It must have been a learning to adjust with a new normal-managing pain, fatigue, and cognitive fog within the rigorous demands of an academic curriculum. Neither the financial troubles nor the subsequent setbacks dampened the urge to know and learn. The most intriguing feature for me was the delicacy of the human brain in terms of its resiliency and adaptability. I am drawn to the challenge of unraveling the complexities of neurological disorders and developing innovative treatments that will enhance the quality of young patients' lives. The desire to alleviate the misery of fellow human beings, coupled with a passionate commitment to scientific advancement through STEM and neurosurgery, constitutes my very fundamental drive and urge. It is altogether inspirational to perceive how engineering can be directed at solving complicated problems of medicine. I have had the great fortune of growing up and watching a very remarkable woman: my mother. She has been more than a parent to me, a force of nature, an unrelenting pursuit of knowledge, and a beacon of hope. Her belief in me, even at our darkest hours, has been the shaping influence in my life. My mother's case is that of a character that epitomizes everything to do with resilience: becoming a mom at seventeen, having three children by the time she graduated from law school, and never letting her early motherhood get in the way of her completing her degree and building a good career. This commitment to higher education, even with a family to raise, was an inspiration in my mind to excel academically. Other burdens our family had to carry included the abusive behavior from my father. The deep emotional and physical scars from those experiences, of course, ran very deep. Yet it was my mother's love that shielded us against the storm. She knew that professional help was needed, and she forced us into therapy-a decision that would prove a lifesaver. We learned through therapy how to cope healthily and heal the wounds of our traumatic childhood. One of the most touching moments that really molded my character was when my mother enrolled me in a summer science camp despite the financial hardship she was facing. She believed in me when I did not, and this sparked a passion in STEM that still fuels my aspirations. Growing up, my mother's dedication to social justice and community activism has deeply influenced my value systems. I remember well the day I marched with her at the 2013 immigration rally and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. Such experiences instilled in me a deep sense of empathy toward people coming from underprivileged communities and a desire to stand in support of equity. I am especially concerned with the health disparities faced by BIPOC women. My advocacy was inspired by my mother, and I will be conducting research to help improve healthcare outcomes for this population. It was only after a young, empathetic doctor insisted on further testing that I was finally diagnosed and received appropriate treatment. My experience highlights the systemic biases that can prevent BIPOC patients from receiving the care they need. As a pediatric neurosurgeon, I am committed to addressing these disparities and ensuring that all patients, regardless of race,ethnicity, or gender, are treated with respect and compassion. The field of medicine, particularly neurosurgery, desperately needs a more diverse workforce. As of 2023, only 1.8% to 4% of neurosurgeons in the United States are Black or African American, despite Black people comprising 14% of the national demographic. Similarly, while women make up over half of graduating medical classes each year, only 6% of board-certified practicing neurosurgeons are women. This underrepresentation is even more stark for Black women, who make up a mere 0.6% of the neurosurgical workforce. There's also a critical need for more pediatric neurosurgeons in general. With only approximately 300 such surgeons currently practicing in the United States, access to specialized care for children with neurological conditions remains limited. Becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon would allow me to directly address both these crucial needs. The most superficial layer reveals the stigma of being labeled "crazy" or "dramatic." Deeper still, we uncover historical connections between mental health and the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as the pervasive issue of substance abuse often used as a coping mechanism. At the core, we find generational patterns of mental health struggles that can be difficult to trace. I am a young Black woman who has lived through these layers firsthand. My own experiences with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts are intertwined with the mental health struggles of my parents and their parents before them. My father's addiction, a symptom of underlying trauma and untreated mental health issues, cast a long shadow over my childhood. Witnessing his pain and my mother's subsequent journey to recovery has profoundly shaped my perspective. These experiences have ignited a passion to create a world where mental health is prioritized and accessible to all, especially within Black communities. While my ultimate career goal is to become a pediatric neurosurgeon, I recognize the importance of addressing mental health holistically. I believe entrepreneurship offers a unique platform to contribute to this cause. My makeup artist business is the first step towards achieving financial independence and gaining invaluable experience in the business world. It is more than a source of income; it is a platform for personal growth and a stepping stone towards my long-term goals. Makeup is a versatile tool that goes beyond aesthetics, fostering self-expression, confidence, and mental health. By allowing individuals to experiment with creativity and appearance, makeup can serve as a therapeutic outlet, fostering a positive sense of self and improving overall quality of life. Experimenting with makeup has always been a calming escape for me during stressful times, so I wanted to share that solace with others. Through this venture, I aim to cultivate a supportive community, potentially increase clients' self-beauty and self-worth, and allow them respite from their mental state— even if it is only for a short while. Ultimately, my goal is to create a lasting impact on the lives of others.
