I am a Geological Engineering student interested in using engineering and earth science to help build safer, more sustainable communities. My goals are to gain hands-on experience, become a licensed professional engineer, and work on projects involving infrastructure, groundwater, geotechnical design, and environmental protection.       Learner Calculus Scholarship
      Calculus is important in the STEM field because it helps explain change. Almost everything in science, technology, engineering, and math involves something that changes over time, distance, speed, pressure, temperature, force, or motion. Calculus gives students and professionals a way to understand those changes instead of just guessing or looking at a final number. It is one of the tools that connects math to real-world problems. In engineering, calculus is especially important because engineers often work with systems that are constantly changing. For example, when designing a road, bridge, building, or water system, an engineer may need to understand how forces change across a structure, how water flows through a channel, or how pressure changes underground. These are not always simple problems with one basic formula. Calculus helps break complicated situations into smaller pieces so they can be studied, measured, and solved. Calculus is also important because it teaches problem-solving. Even if someone does not use every calculus formula every day, the way calculus trains the mind is valuable. It teaches you how to think through a problem step by step, understand relationships between variables, and check whether an answer makes sense. In STEM, that kind of thinking matters just as much as the final answer. For my field of geological engineering, calculus is useful because the earth is not simple or perfectly shaped. Soil, rock, groundwater, slopes, and natural forces all change depending on location and conditions. Calculus can help model groundwater flow, slope stability, erosion, stress in materials, and other natural processes. These calculations can affect real decisions, such as whether a site is safe to build on or how to prevent environmental damage. Calculus also supports many other STEM subjects. Physics uses calculus to describe motion, energy, electricity, and forces. Biology can use calculus to study population growth or the spread of disease. Computer science uses calculus in areas like artificial intelligence, graphics, and data analysis. Even when the field looks very different, calculus often works in the background as a foundation for understanding patterns and predictions. I think calculus is important because it helps turn ideas into solutions. STEM fields are not only about memorizing facts. They are about solving problems that affect people’s lives. Whether someone is designing safer infrastructure, improving medical technology, protecting the environment, or creating new software, they need strong tools to understand complex systems. Calculus is one of those tools. Overall, calculus matters because it gives STEM students a deeper understanding of how the world works. It helps explain change, improve designs, make predictions, and solve problems more accurately. For me, learning calculus is not just about passing a math class. It is part of becoming a stronger problem solver and a better future engineer.

      Sustainability should be a priority in geological engineering because the work directly connects to the land, water, and resources that communities depend on. Before any major project is built, engineers have to understand the soil, rock, groundwater, and natural conditions of the site. If those things are ignored, a project can damage the environment, waste resources, or even put people at risk. Geological engineering is not just about building on the earth. It is about understanding the earth well enough to build responsibly. I am interested in this field because I want to be part of work that has a real impact. Roads, bridges, buildings, mines, dams, and water systems all depend on good engineering decisions. Those decisions can either protect the environment or harm it. For example, poor planning can lead to erosion, contaminated groundwater, unstable slopes, flooding problems, or unnecessary land disturbance. Sustainable engineering helps prevent those issues before they become bigger problems. In the future, I see myself helping reduce environmental impact by working on projects that balance development with protection of natural resources. I want to help design safer foundations, manage groundwater responsibly, reduce erosion, and identify geologic hazards before construction begins. By understanding the conditions below the surface, geological engineers can help avoid failures, reduce waste, and create infrastructure that lasts longer. Long-lasting infrastructure is important because it means fewer repairs, fewer materials used, and less damage to the environment over time. I also hope to work on projects related to water resources and environmental protection. Clean water is one of the most important resources a community can have, and geological engineers play a role in protecting groundwater and understanding how water moves through soil and rock. I want my future work to help prevent contamination, improve site planning, and support safe water systems. Even small decisions in engineering can affect people and the environment for many years. It affects everyone around them. That experience taught me resilience, patience, and compassion. It showed me that people can struggle deeply and still work toward change. It also taught me how important it is to keep moving forward, even when life does not feel fair or easy. Instead of letting that experience define me in a negative way, I have tried to use it as motivation. It pushed me to stay focused on school, my goals, and the kind of future I want to build for myself. I believe I should receive this scholarship because I am committed to my education and to becoming someone who can make a positive impact.       On my 15th birthday, most people would expect memories of cake, gifts, and celebration. For me, that day is connected to something much heavier: my dad being admitted into rehab for alcohol abuse. It was a confusing and painful moment because I was old enough to understand what was happening, but still young enough to feel like my world had been shaken. Substance abuse affected my life by changing the way I saw family, responsibility, and strength. Watching someone I love struggle with alcohol was difficult because it made me feel helpless at times. I wanted things to be normal, but addiction does not only affect the person going through it. It affects the whole family. It brings stress, worry, and uncertainty into moments that are supposed to feel safe. Having my dad enter rehab on my birthday made that reality impossible to ignore. At the same time, that experience taught me lessons I still carry with me. I learned that asking for help is not weakness. In many ways, it is one of the hardest and bravest things a person can do. Seeing my dad go to rehab helped me understand that recovery takes honesty, support, and a willingness to change. It also showed me that people are more than their lowest moments. Addiction can hurt families, but recovery can also bring hope. My motivation comes from wanting to turn a painful experience into something that makes me stronger instead of letting it hold me back. I stay focused on school, my future, and becoming someone my family can be proud of. I know what it feels like to go through something personal while still having to keep moving forward. That has made me more determined, more understanding, and more grateful for stability in my life.       Being a Pacific Islander attending college means carrying more than just my own goals with me. As a Pacific Islander, I have learned the importance of family, hard work, respect, and staying connected to where I come from. Those values have helped me push through challenges in school and keep working toward my future. There are times when college can feel overwhelming, especially when balancing the cost of school, classes, and the pressure to succeed. However, my background reminds me to stay grounded and keep going even when things get difficult. Attending college also means being part of something bigger than myself. Pacific Islanders are not always strongly represented in higher education, so being here matters. I know that every step I take can help show younger students from similar backgrounds that college is possible.       I chose geological engineering because I like solving problems that people do not always see. So much of engineering starts underground, with the soil, rock, groundwater, and natural conditions that a project is built on. I have always been interested in how the earth works, but I also want a career where I can use that knowledge in a practical way. Geological engineering feels like the right fit because it combines science, fieldwork, and real-world problem solving. My short-term goal is to keep learning through my classes, labs, and hands-on experience. I want to build a strong foundation in geology, geotechnical engineering, water resources, and environmental work. I also want to gain more experience through internships and fieldwork, because I know that seeing real projects in person will help me become a better engineer. After graduation, I hope to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and start working in a position where I can learn from experienced engineers. My long-term goal is to become a licensed professional engineer and work on projects that make communities safer and stronger.
