Bio

As a kid, the act of speaking proved to be a challenge for me. However, I soon discovered that it wasn't the act of speaking itself, but rather the context in which I expressed myself. It dawned on me that nothing mattered if no one could truly hear my authentic essence. Trapped within the confines of abuse as a kid, I became nothing more than a marionette, manipulated, catching glimpses of my strength. Although I find myself in my 20's, I now feel as if I have been reborn, with the wisdom and life experience of my years while still harboring the boundless desires, passion, & innocent faith of a child. It is confusing, this feeling of being both exhilarated and vulnerable in a world that always challenges your validity. One is made to question whether they possess the right attributes age, gender, race, & so on, to truly matter. The idea to give up is easy. I am deserving of the space I inhabit, dedicating myself to honing my craft. For me, the role of an actor embodies perseverance & the relentless pursuit of excellence. I would rather face & overcome the trials that come my way than exist in a world where my voice is silenced. "silenced" referring to embracing my true self, aligning my actions with the beat of my heart, and nurturing my aspirations for personal growth within the realm of performing arts. This is not just for me, it is a tribute to my late grandmother, whose own dream of becoming an actor remained unfulfilled. When I perform, I am determined to make our combined presence known, to immortalize her spirit & carry her unrealized aspirations within me.

As I reflect upon my life's journey, I am reminded of the profound impact that adversity can have on shaping one's character and aspirations. My own experience of overcoming the tumultuous challenges of job termination due to racism and ableism has ignited a fire within me to drive positive change within my community. Through relentless determination and unwavering commitment, I have transformed my struggle into a catalyst for meaningful transformation, propelling me to pursue higher education so that I can amplify my efforts in advocating for social justice and inclusivity. The termination of my employment on the grounds of racism and ableism was a turning point that tested my resilience and resolve. The painful reality of confronting discrimination head-on was a stark reminder of the systemic inequities that persist within our society. Instead of succumbing to despair, I chose to channel my emotions into action. Guided by the belief that adversity should not define but refine us, I embarked on a path of seeking justice through an ongoing civil rights case. With unwavering determination, I have navigated the legal complexities, engaged with advocacy groups, and used my voice to highlight the injustices faced by marginalized communities in the workplace. My journey has revealed the power of community support, mentorship, and education. Through my experiences, I have come to realize the importance of fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and accommodates all abilities. As I look toward the future, my aspiration is to leverage my personal journey to empower others facing similar challenges. I am committed to making a difference by helping to break down the barriers that hinder progress and growth within our communities. In the years ahead, I envision myself pursuing higher education to equip myself with the knowledge and tools needed to effect lasting change. Armed with a comprehensive understanding of social justice, civil rights, and advocacy strategies, I am determined to address the root causes of discrimination and ableism. I plan to establish workshops, seminars, and educational campaigns that raise awareness about these issues and offer practical solutions for creating more inclusive work environments. Furthermore, I intend to collaborate with established civil rights organizations and disability advocacy groups, forging partnerships that amplify the impact of my efforts. By engaging with experts and individuals who share my passion for equity, I hope to develop innovative strategies that challenge the status quo and drive systemic change. Beyond immediate action, my long-term vision revolves around mentorship and support. I am dedicated to guiding individuals who have encountered adversity on their journey toward self-discovery and empowerment. By sharing my experiences and offering guidance, I aim to foster resilience and equip others with the tools to overcome challenges and effect change within their own communities. In conclusion, my journey through job termination due to racism and ableism has instilled in me a fierce determination to create a more just and equitable society. My pursuit of higher education, coupled with my commitment to advocacy and education, reflects my unwavering dedication to empowering communities and dismantling the barriers that hinder progress. As I stand on the cusp of higher education, I am ready to harness the power of knowledge and collaboration to forge a future where inclusivity and justice prevail.

As a BIPOC individual who has experienced youth homelessness, holds previous art degrees, and triumphed over past abuse, having a career in the arts holds much importance to me. My journey has been a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression, and through my work in theater, dance, piano, and singing, I have found healing, growth, and a sense of purpose that I am determined to share with the world. Growing up as a BIPOC individual, I often felt like an outsider, marginalized by the world around me. Youth homelessness further exacerbated this feeling of isolation, making it difficult to envision a future where my dreams could come true. However, it was during these challenging times that I found solace in the arts. Whether it was losing myself in the rhythm of salsa or finding my voice through the piano, the arts became a sanctuary where I could be truly myself. These were expanded upon when I receieved past degrees in Graphic Design , Digital Media , & Visual Communications. My past experiences of abuse were particularly traumatic, leaving deep emotional scars that took time and effort to heal. Through this expression I found a therapeutic outlet for processing the pain and confusion. The arts allowed me to channel my emotions into a creative force, gradually transforming my pain into strength. It was in this journey of growth that I realized the immense potential the arts hold for healing and empowerment, both for oneself and others. Currently, I am actively involved in film, dance, and piano, honing my skills during the many current creative strikes. These outlets have become an integral part of my identity, shaping my perspective and influencing the way I approach life. In film, I discovered the power of storytelling, enabling me to find my inner voice and confidence. Dance taught me discipline and perseverance, showing me that every step forward, no matter how small, contributes to the grander narrative of progress. The piano has been my constant companion, allowing me to express myself when words fail and connecting me to the depths of human emotion. Moreover, my experience of singing at Carnegie Hall was a defining moment, not just in my artistic journey but in my life. It was a dream come true, affirming that with dedication and resilience, I can turn my aspirations into reality. Having a career in the arts is not just about pursuing a passion; it is about making a meaningful impact on the world. I believe that as an artist, I have the responsibility to use my talents to amplify the voices of marginalized communities, to advocate for social change, and to inspire others to find strength in their own stories. My journey as a BIPOC individual who has experienced youth homelessness, past abuse, and growth from those experiences, serves as a testament to the power of the arts to uplift, heal, and empower. In conclusion, having a career in the arts is not a mere choice for me; it is a calling that has emerged from the depths of my experiences and the resilience I have cultivated along the way. Through the arts, I have found purpose, healing, and the courage to embrace my true self. As an artist, I am committed to breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and creating a world where every voice is heard and celebrated. The arts have been my guiding light in the darkest moments of my life, and I am determined to use that light to illuminate the paths of others, spreading hope, joy, and empowerment through the transformative power of artistic expression.
Jason L. Berry "Art Is Life!" Scholarship
Art, for me, is more than a mere creative outlet it is the purest form of self-expression, an extension of my hopes and desires made real. It is a powerful medium that transcends boundaries, defies conventions, and allows me to connect with the world on a profound level. Art has become my sanctuary, a space where I can channel my emotions, learn from the pain, and transform the ordinary into something extraordinary. When I first discovered my passion for art, it ignited a fire within me that continues to burn brightly to this day. Through every brushstroke, every sculpting gesture, and every composition, I find myself delving deeper into the essence of who I am. Art allows me to communicate the unspoken, to convey my thoughts, dreams, and fears in ways that words alone cannot capture. It is my voice, resonating across time and space, inviting others to experience the world through my eyes. Art has taught me to embrace vulnerability and learn from the challenges that life presents. It is in the midst of pain and adversity that some of the most famous works of art have been born. Just as an artist may blend colors to create a masterpiece, I strive to transform my struggles into catalysts for growth and change. Through art, I have learned to find beauty even in the darkest of moments, reminding myself that every setback is an opportunity for transformation. Furthermore, art has the power to inspire change and ignite greatness within oneself and society. It acts as a mirror, reflecting the complexities of the human condition and provoking thought and introspection. Art can challenge societal norms, advocate for social justice, and initiate dialogue on pressing issues. By harnessing the creative energy within me, I aspire to create art that not only captivates but also provokes change, pushing the boundaries of perception and encouraging others to see the world in a different light, that light being my own story and life experiences. In pursuit of my artistic aspirations, I am committed to continuous learning and growth. My past that I continuously mentioned in my other essays. Growing from my abuse and homelessness. In conclusion, art is not merely an activity for me, it is a way of life. It is an expression of my deepest self, a means to learn from pain, and a catalyst for transforming the good into something extraordinary. Through my artistic endeavors, I strive to inspire others, challenge the status quo, contribute to a more compassionate and enlightened society, and most importantly, tell my story. With this scholarship, I hope to nurture my artistic potential and further embark on a journey of creativity, self-discovery, and artistic impact. Academic Awards : https://meritpages.com/zayaslanier

I want to pursue a career in acting because I know I have a meaningful story to tell that can only be told through the vigorous work put forth within the performing arts. As referenced in my many previous essays which can still be viewed, my past has been filled with both trials and tribulations that allowed me to see the world for what it is both the good and bad, but I had to prioritize the good and turn that into something meaningful in my life. I strive for self-excellence and growth, as I know I feel like I've lost so many years to both my insecurities and doubts, while I know this isn't true, its hard not to think so in the hyper-visible world that we live in because of social media, etc. My goals specifically are to work within film and television with an emphasis on film. I am such a cinephile when it comes to entertainment media that allows us to see and hear all of the amazing and intricate stories that come from both the heart and the soul. My interests are in animation and comic-related stories. Currently, I am preparing for an audition at the Academy of Dramatic Arts, which is why I am pursuing this scholarship. I've performed in short films, as well as live entertainment with the Walt Disney Studios. While unrelated to acting specifically as actors we must be versatile, so because of this I take classes in dance, singing, and music. Right now I am practicing both salsa and ballet, as well as continuing with piano, which I have played for over six years, I'm also taking vocal lessons and tumbling classes since I have experience with gymnastics. I endured childhood homelessness, which affected me in ways that I couldn't even fathom even to this day as I get the professional help that I need. While I wouldn't necessarily call it a failure since I was only a child, It was a challenge and setback in both my environment as well as mental health. It affected me in ways where I felt an out-of-body experience and felt that I wasn't truly myself and how I did so many things that I wouldn't have accepted in my present because my focus was solely on survival rather than being a child. I wasn't allowed the grace to think of my future, but only my day-by-day. This set me back in regards to my mental health, which I wasn't truly able to work on until 2 years ago in regards to therapy and medications etc. The main thing I learned from this experience is the concept of empathy, and the willingness of humankind to help others in need. In many instances, I learned that my family may not have been by blood, but by a personal relationship, and that relationship's desire to want each other to both exceed and excel in this harsh world around us, especially as unknowing children. I also learned to grow from the pain. I cannot let this experience turn me into a monster like those that I despised back then who put me in the situation I was in, but I also learned that I cannot despise them as well and that I need to hold hope and positivity within my heart. The difference is now that I'm older I'm able to understand that I can learn from the pain and decide my own path, but also create healthy boundaries to ensure both my mental security as well as physical security. In the end, while it was a whirlwind of emotions and experiences, I wouldn't necessarily change it for anything, because I am who I am today because of my experiences, and while there is pain and suffering, I was able to understand who I truly was, which was one of the biggest obstacles that I ever faced being on autopilot as a homeless youth, now that I have this understanding, I can take forth any trials or tribulations and put forth my best efforts for things that I would've deemed inachievable in the past, due to doubting myself, but I have no more doubts because I know I am both valid and worthy in any space or activity I wish to take part in.
