Ever since I was born, I was in and out of the hospital due to severe asthma. I grew up in Guys Hill, St. Catherine, Jamaica, in a house that was infested with mold, which only made my condition worse. My early childhood was filled with countless doctor visits, breathing treatments, and overnight hospital stays. It was a scary and overwhelming time, especially for a young child, but one thing made it all a little easier, the nurses. Despite how uncomfortable or painful things got, I always remember how kind, respectful, and patient the nurses were with me. Their gentle, compassionate, and reassuring presence made a difficult time in my life feel less frightening. Being around them brought me a sense of calm. I actually enjoyed their company, and I started to see the hospital not just as a place of sickness, but also as a place of care and healing. From a very young age, I looked up to nurses as role models. I started dressing up as a nurse for every career day at school. It became something I looked forward to each year a personal tradition that made me feel connected to my dream. Fun fact I have a pair of scrubs in my closet, that I'm waiting to wear for career day. Whenever someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always the same, a nurse. That dream has never changed. Now that I’m older and have had the opportunity to explore other career options, nursing still stands out as my number one choice. It’s not just a job to me, it’s a calling. Nurses are the backbone of hospitals and other medical institutions. They work long shifts, advocate for their patients, and take on difficult responsibilities with dedication. I’ve never met a nurse who wasn’t passionate about their work or willing to go above and beyond for others. Their strength, commitment, and kindness continue to inspire me every day. I know that without a doubt that nursing is the path I’m meant to follow. I've always wanted to work in the medical field, and for the longest time, I dreamed of becoming a pediatrician. That goal stayed with me for many years. However, as I grew older and gained more experiences, especially through my own health challenges and interactions with healthcare professionals, I began to realize that my true passion lies in nursing. So while my passion for healthcare remained the same, the role I wanted to pursue has shifted. Today, I am fully committed to becoming a registered nurse.
