My name is Zariah Browning and I am a senior at Tennessee state university. My long-term goal in life is to become a civil rights attorney catering to Juveniles wrongly convicted (specifically minorities). I am passionate about this line of work because we minorities do not get a fair chance in the court/jail systems, they need someone who is willing to fight for them and care not someone who just wants a paycheck. I am a great candidate because I care about my education and my end goal to make this world a little better by fighting for the equality we so greatly deserve.

My freshman year of college was marked by a profound personal crisis my mother was diagnosed with blood clots surrounding her heart and lungs. As I navigated the complexities of higher education, the distance between us weighed heavily on my heart. Being far from home while my mother faced such a serious health issue created a sense of anxiety and helplessness. I struggled with balancing my studies and the emotional turmoil of worrying about her well-being. It was a difficult time, but it also taught me resilience and the importance of faith.
During this challenging period, I found myself grappling with the fear of what might happen to my mother and how it might affect my future. I often questioned whether I could maintain my focus on my degree while dealing with the emotional strain of being away from my family. Yet, I drew strength from my mother’s determination to overcome her health challenges. Her resilience inspired me to persevere and stay committed to my education, despite the obstacles I faced.
As I transitioned into my sophomore year, another challenge emerged our family faced financial difficulties that put my tuition at risk. We simply didn’t have enough money to cover the costs. This situation tested my faith, but I remained steadfast in my belief that everything would work out for the greater good. I prayed for guidance and support, trusting that my efforts to pursue a civil rights degree were aligned with a higher purpose. Miraculously, with the help of scholarships, financial aid, and the unwavering support of my community, I was able to continue my education.
These experiences have profoundly shaped my understanding of resilience, faith, and community support. As I move forward in my studies, I am committed to giving back to the community that has supported me through these challenging times. My passion for civil rights and social justice is rooted in my desire to advocate for those who face adversity, just as my family and I did.
With my degree, I aim to work specifically with marginalized populations, ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights are protected. I envision creating programs that empower individuals to navigate the legal system, much like I navigated my challenges. By providing resources and support, I hope to help others overcome their obstacles, just as my community helped me.
Now a senior the trials I faced during my college journey have instilled in me a deep commitment to service and advocacy. I believe that by sharing my story and giving back, I can honor my mother’s strength and the support of my community while contributing to the ongoing fight for social justice.

In a world often focused on conformity, I take pride in my uniqueness and the positive impact it has on the lives of others. My distinct perspective and experiences motivate me to engage in meaningful volunteer work, particularly at the local Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) in my hometown. Here, I have the opportunity to connect with young individuals, sharing insights on anger management, goal setting, and personal growth. My commitment to these causes reflects not just my desire to help, but also my belief in the transformative power of kindness, even when no one is watching.
What sets me apart is my deep understanding of the challenges that many young people face. Growing up, I encountered my own struggles and frustrations, which allowed me to empathize with the youth at the JDC. I realized that anger, often stemming from feelings of isolation or hopelessness, can be overwhelming for these individuals. By sharing techniques for managing anger and discussing the importance of emotional awareness, I aim to provide them with tools to navigate their feelings more constructively. This unique perspective enables me to foster open dialogues that encourage self-reflection and healing.
Additionally, I emphasize the importance of goal setting during my sessions. I believe that having clear, achievable goals can instill a sense of purpose and direction. Many of the young people I speak to feel trapped in their circumstances, unsure of how to envision a better future. By guiding them through the process of identifying their aspirations and breaking them down into manageable steps, I empower them to take control of their lives. This is not merely about setting goals; it’s about instilling hope and demonstrating that change is possible.
What I find most rewarding is the ability to effect change quietly, without the need for recognition. My acts of kindness may go unnoticed by the broader community, but the gratitude and growth I witness in the young individuals I work with are what truly matter. I am inspired by their progress, whether it’s seeing a spark of motivation in their eyes or hearing about their successes, no matter how small.
Ultimately, my uniqueness allows me to connect with others on a deeper level. I understand the significance of compassion and the profound impact of simply being present for someone in need. By volunteering my time and sharing my insights, I strive to make a difference in their lives, demonstrating that kindness can be a catalyst for change. In a world that often overlooks the power of individual actions, I remain committed to using my unique voice to uplift and inspire those around me.

As I pursue my criminal justice degree with the goal of becoming a civil rights lawyer specializing in juvenile youth, particularly minorities, I am committed to making a tangible impact in my community. Recognizing that advocacy for social justice and equity requires intentional engagement, I have devised a strategic plan that focuses on actively connecting with communities, driving change, and contributing to the ongoing fight for justice.
The first step in my plan involves building strong relationships within the communities I aim to serve. I will actively participate in local organizations focused on juvenile justice reform and minority advocacy. By volunteering my time and skills, I can better understand the specific challenges these communities face. I will attend town hall meetings, engage in community forums, and establish partnerships with grassroots organizations. Through these interactions, I aim to amplify the voices of those who are often marginalized and ensure their concerns are addressed.
Equipped with my knowledge of criminal justice, I plan to organize workshops and informational sessions aimed at educating youth and their families about their rights and the legal system. This will empower them to navigate the complexities of juvenile justice more effectively. Topics will include understanding legal processes, knowing their rights during encounters with law enforcement, and exploring alternatives to incarceration. By fostering an informed community, I hope to equip individuals with the tools necessary to advocate for themselves and others.
Engaging in policy advocacy is essential for driving systemic change. I plan to collaborate with existing advocacy groups to lobby for reforms that address disparities in the juvenile justice system, particularly those affecting minority youth. This includes advocating for policies that promote restorative justice, equitable sentencing, and access to mental health resources. By leveraging my education and passion for social justice, I aim to influence decision-makers and promote legislation that fosters equity.
To further contribute to the fight for social justice, I will utilize social media and community outreach campaigns to raise awareness about issues affecting minority youth in the juvenile justice system. By sharing stories, statistics, and resources, I hope to galvanize support for initiatives aimed at reforming the system. Collaborating with local artists and influencers can amplify our message and reach a broader audience.
Lastly, I recognize that the fight for social justice is ongoing. I am committed to continuous learning and adapting my strategies to better serve the needs of the community. By staying informed about current events and emerging issues within the juvenile justice system, I will remain an effective advocate for change.
