In the last few years of my life, I have made many sustainable choices to reduce my carbon footprint. After a trip to visit family in Jamaica, I got to see firsthand negative environmental practices, burning trash, pollution in waters, and no recycling practices. I think it is important for individuals to be mindful of their impact on the environment because what we do greatly affects the world around us. Some practices I have started to do include, relying less on vehicles, being more energy efficient, using renewable energy, reducing my meat consumption, and growing my garden. As a college student, I have found it to be really easy to reduce my carbon footprint with transportation. Living by my college campus has allowed me to take advantage of walking, or biking to campus. Not only has this reduced the amount of carbon emissions from my car, but I have saved hundreds of dollars on gas, and wear and tear on my vehicle. Living by my college campus has also allowed my friends and I to carpool if we all needed to get to a destination, instead of driving separately. Further lowering our overall carbon emissions. Being energy efficient should be a common practice for most people. Turning lights off when not being used, making sure not to have pipes of running water on for no reason, and unplugging devices when they are not being used are all common choices I make throughout my day. These intentional choices have become second-hand nature in my daily life. With new renewable technology being developed such as electric cars, hydropower, and solar power, society is starting to shift into a more greener future. Currently, the house I live in has solar panels equipped. Solar panels have come a long way in recent years, from an average of around 15% conversion of sunlight to usable energy to around 20% research has shown. I believe everyone should consider buying solar panels for their homes. I even see many businesses and schools using solar panels to lower their costs of electricity. Lastly, according to experts, meat reduction has benefits for the environment. As a college student cooking and creating meals can be difficult when you live on your own. To prepare for school, not only did I acquire the material things I needed, but during the summer I practiced cooking new recipes and meals. Doing this has allowed me to make my own healthy, and delicious meals away from home. Additionally, I have recently been investing in growing a sustainable garden. In which I grow tomatoes, beans, and basil. It wasn't easy at first, but my work has been paying off. Not everyone may be concerned about their carbon footprint. The practices that I have started to do such as relying less on vehicles, being more energy efficient, using renewable energy, reducing my meat consumption, and growing my garden. These choices have allowed me to reduce my carbon footprint, one step closer to preserving and protecting our environment. If I could organize a team to deal with a new supernatural threat, I would pick Eleven, Jim Hopper, and Nancy Wheeler. Each of these individuals have unique characteristics that make them invaluable in the face of any danger. First, Eleven is a clear choice due to her incredible telepathic abilities. She can use her mind to move items, locate people, and communicate telepathically. Eleven's abilities are essential for fighting any supernatural threat. Her determination and fearlessness guarantee that she confronts any danger straight on, and her growing awareness of friendship and commitment enhances the team's bond. Next, Jim Hopper's experience and leadership are important. As chief of police, Hopper has a thorough understanding of tactical planning and crisis management. His physical strength and battle abilities are critical for defending the team and defeating opponents. Hopper's firm demeanor and sense of responsibility serve as a balancing force for the group, keeping everyone focused and safe. His practical approach and ability to make difficult judgments swiftly help the team navigate the most dangerous situations. Finally, Nancy Wheeler contributes investigative skills and creativity to the group. Nancy's keen intelligence and journalistic instincts enable her to discover critical information and piece together clues that others may miss. Her passion to discover the truth, combined with her strategic thinking, allows her to design creative schemes and find fresh solutions to challenging situations. Nancy's bravery and willingness to face danger head on compliment her investigative abilities, making her an overall important team member. Eleven's psychic abilities, Hopper's strength and leadership, and Nancy's intelligence and resourcefulness form an elite group capable of tackling any supernatural threat. With their combined attributes, they are well-equipped to uncover the mystery, protect each other, and eventually overcome any challenge they face.

When I arrive home from a long day of school, I set my bookbag down and go to the kitchen for a quick snack. Looking at the calendar on the fridge, I remember that today is family game night. My parents bought a Nintendo Switch for Christmas to replace our old Wii U, and it became a family custom for us to come together and play every Thursday night. As I finish my snack, I feel the familiar thrill of anticipation. Tonight's game is one of our all-time favorites, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. While we enjoy a variety of games, there's something unique about the chaos and excitement of racing each other in Mario Kart. The game has a unique combination of strong competitiveness and lighthearted fun, making it ideal for our competitive family. As we gather in the living room, I notice my siblings have already chosen their favorite characters. Ciara, who is always quick to grab Toad, grinned at me. Mom and Dad are debating which course to race first. I take a controller and select my usual character, Mario, ready to defend my status as reigning champion. The first race is on Rainbow Road, a very difficult circuit. From the time the race begins, it's a blur of shells, banana peels, and frenzied steering. We're all shouting and laughing, and the room is full with both gaming sounds and our voices. Ciara and I are going neck and neck in the final lap. As we near the finish line, she throws a red shell, but I miss it with a well-timed drift, crossing just a half second ahead. The victory feels sweet, but the best part is the shared experience. After a few more intense races, we switch to Super Mario Party, continuing the fun and competition. As the clock ticks closer to bedtime, we wrap up the night, already looking forward to next week’s game night. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is our family's favorite because it brings us together in a unique way. Each race is a new adventure, and every game night is a chance to bond, laugh, and create memories. Whether it's a photo-finish victory or a surprising comeback, these moments solidify our bond and make Mario Kart more than just a game. It’s a tradition that keeps us connected, reminding us that the real joy comes from playing together.

Naruto is one of my favorite anime series to watch over and over again. The series follows "Naruto Uzumaki," an orphan, on his journey to become a ninja and eventually to become a Hokage. The Hokage is the highest ranking official in his village, responsible for everyone and the village's security. The show is not only about fighting and action, but it highlights the importance of persistence, and determination. One of my favorite aspect of this show is that the character development is perfectly portrayed throughout the show. In the beginning of he show Naruto was looked down upon by almost every person in the village, because of a tragic past he wasn't fully aware of. A legendary mystical beast called the Nine Tails, attacked the village. To stop the beast, Naruto's father, Minato Namikaze, the fourth Hokage, sealed the beast inside Naruto. Although Naruto wasn't aware of this, the village people stayed away from him. They feared the beast inside of him, for the pain and loss that it caused. Being alone for obvious reasons impacted Naruto; he always felt left out, unappreciated, and unvalued. He coped with this by becoming the village troublemaker, as an attempt to be seen. Naruto struggled growing up, with making friends, going to ninja academy, and trying to change the image that was put on to him. Despite all the trials and tribulations, he persisted, growing and developing as a person, friend, and a great ninja. He was able to gain the respect of others in the village, and make life long friends. One of the most interesting features of Naruto's journey is his relentless optimism and unwillingness to quit up, no matter how impossible the situation appeared. This perseverance can be seen in his famous catchphrase, "Believe it!" (or "Dattebayo!" in Japanese). His determination motivates those around him, converting enemies into allies and skeptics into believers. Characters such as Sasuke Uchiha, who begins as a rival and friend but eventually descends into darkness, are significantly inspired by Naruto's relentless pursuit of his dreams and dedication to his friends. The concept of redemption is also central to Naruto's plot. Characters who have made serious mistakes or suffered great suffering, such as Gaara and Nagato (Pain), find hope and a way to redemption through Naruto's empathy and compassion. As a first-generation Black college student from a Jamaican immigrant family, I understand the obstacles and opportunities that come with pursuing a better future. My journey has been characterized by persistence, determination, and a desire to give back to my community. Over the next five years, I intend to use finance to make a good environmental effect in my local and worldwide communities. My involvement on campus has helped me learn skills and a sense of responsibility. I work in the facilities department, aiding in the mailroom, where I have learned the value of organization and efficiency. In addition, I volunteer at a variety of campus events, including sports camps during summer breaks, being a mentor for young children. Also volunteering at on campus social events, to bring the student community together. These experiences developed my leadership skills and reinforced my dedication to service. I am currently studying finance with the purpose of helping my community in achieving financial stability and progress. Growing up, I watched many families' financial hardships, particularly in immigrant and minority groups. This prompted me to pursue a profession in finance, where I could use my knowledge to help people make educated financial choices. I hope to use my financial knowledge to help families, and especially younger individuals make better financial decisions. I plan to combine my financial knowledge and provide free financial guidance and concepts to individuals in the community who may not have access to this type of information through online platforms. Platforms like YouTube do an incredible job of connecting millions of individuals around the world. I intend to create financial content outside of my employment to engage with my community. In addition to finance, technology is another field that interests me. In the next five years I plan on using technology to help impact communities, and the environment in a positive way. Understanding the growing importance of sustainability, I will advocate for and implement technology solutions that promote environmental sustainability. This includes supporting the use of renewable energy sources, promoting energy-efficient practices, and encouraging the recycling and repurposing of electronic devices. If I could have everyone in the world read just one book, it would undoubtedly be "Poverty, By America," be Matthew Desmond. This book is essential because it explains why poverty exists in one of the richest countries in the world an what we can do about it. Desmond demonstrates that poverty is more than just impoverished people not having enough money, It is about a larger system that keeps certain people poor while making others wealthy. He illustrates how government policies, economic rules, and social norms all contribute to the continuation of poverty. Desmond's writing is straightforward and interesting. He uses real-life accounts to illustrate his views, allowing readers to relate with the issues on a personal level. This makes the book not only informative, but also relevant and meaningful. The author does not just discuss the problems, but he also tries to give solutions. He suggests practical measures that individuals and policymakers can use to help reduce poverty. His book is a call to action, pushing readers to participate and make a difference his book accurately captures the lives of millions of people in the United States and around the world. Matthew Desmond's work perfectly demonstrates how poverty is an illness that must be cured. He argues that we have the resources and financial support to make it happen, but we have yet to take action. “Poverty might consume your life, but it’s rarely embraced as an identity. As a first-generation college student and son of Jamaican parents with great expectations. The question of "where are you going to college?" It echoed in my ears like a constant cycle throughout my high school years. I always would feel the weight on my shoulders as a constant reminder of the uncertain path ahead. College, long a mysterious concept, had suddenly become a looming reality, and the weight of expectations felt heavy. Despite the overwhelming uncertainty of the future, I refused to give in to despair. Encouraged by my parents' solid faith in the power of perseverance and persistence, I strived to thrive not just academically but also as a supportive son, diligent student, passionate athlete, and responsible older brother. Balancing my demands of academic and family life became my daily objective, motivating me to commit long days and nights to carrying out my tasks with firm dedication. Amidst the daily struggle, glimpses of a life beyond our means would appear, tickling my imagination with illusions of wealth and leisure. As I saw my friends and their families enjoy luxury that felt out of reach for me, I found myself wishing for financial stability and envying the chances that appeared to be readily within their grasp. My name is Zandray Thompson. I am a student at East Stroudsburg University, currently in my sophomore year pursuing a bachelor's degree in Finance and Economics. My career aspirations consist of getting my bachelor's in Finance and Economics that would help me acquire a position in Corporate finance, within a top financial institution in the country. I want to acquire the knowledge, and the understanding of the financial world, to better help my community in financial turmoil. I am looking forward to what the future holds for me, and I feel that this scholarship will help me achieve my goals. I became profoundly interested in business and economics at the end of middle school. I grew captivated by the financial world and how each economy influenced each other. I wanted to learn how businesses operated to enhance my financial literacy. That is the reason why I am obtaining a degree in Finance and Economics to acquire the skills and information required to help my community. My family was not in the finest financial situation while I was growing up. Education is limited as a result of a lack of resources and opportunity. Nonetheless, we made it through. Money was limited, and my parents had to make countless sacrifices. As a young African American man, I want to escape from this fate, and for my future family. I want to not only make my parents happy but also to feel proud of myself. I want to escape from the hand that was dealt to me. I don't want the hardship and lack of funds to get in the way of my objectives, and the education I want to pursue. As a kid, I was mostly shielded from the daily challenges that my parents faced. It wasn't easy for them to leave Jamaica. A new beginning where you have no friends and very limited relatives to turn to for assistance. When I wanted a new toy, clothing, or a Happy Meal now and again. They were figuring out how to pay the rent, buy groceries, and look after me all at the same time. All of these difficulties became clear to me throughout my time in college. I'm starting to wonder how I'll manage to balance working, being a student-athlete, and my education. I don't want to continue relying on my parents for assistance, because they've already done so much for me. As previously stated, I do not doubt that this scholarship will enable me to finish my college degree. I'm hoping that after reading my essay, you'll feel moved to help someone in need. If I'm given this scholarship, I'll keep my word and work toward my objectives of becoming a prosperous African-American man and supporting my economically disadvantaged neighborhood.

My mother struggled with the decision to travel from Jamaica to the United States. But she was expecting a kid and wanted to offer me greater possibilities than she had. My mother encouraged me to study hard and perform well in school. She wanted the best for me, so she worked many nights, and weekends to provide for me. Teaching me the value of determination and consistency. Watching my mother work so hard, fueled me to excel in my studies. I thought if she could work so hard, then I can do my best in school. I never wanted her sacrifice to go unseen, because I saw it every day. So to honor her, I also did my best. I was recently fortunate to visit my family's home nation of Jamaica. I finally got to meet my uncles, cousins, and grandparents. Although I had no recall of who they were because I had only seen images of them and heard their voices on the phone up until this point. Everything felt fine as if I'd known them my entire life. I was able to see where and how they lived. My family, like my mother, worked hard for what they had. My trip to Jamaica allowed me to immerse myself in my culture. I discovered the values that have influenced my family's past. The experience developed my understanding of the world as a whole. I understood that my heritage is more than simply a part of my identity. It is also a source of strength and motivation for me in my academic studies. I am thankful for who I am, and the people in my life. Learning about my family has given me the drive to pursue higher education. As a way to provide a better life for my family.

The dream version of my future self is someone who, despite all the struggles and setbacks, was able to triumph over adversities and surpass the expectations imposed by society.

I could’ve just stayed in bed on Saturday for the last 4 years. I could’ve just gone home after the last bell. Or even just enjoyed my summer to the fullest, with not a care in the world. Despite all this, I always found myself at the track or the gym. Training for my next track meet. Track and field has always played an important role in my life since I started the sport in middle school. The sport and my coaches taught me the value of consistency. Furthermore, as an individual, I experienced struggle within the sport. Most importantly I learned to develop and improve, rather than create excuses. Most, if not all of society, may look at track athletes as insane individuals. Running? Like as a sport? No matter how you put it, it does sound crazy. Despite this thousands of track and field athletes compete year-round. From field events to track events, we all compete against each other. Simply to accomplish our goals, and improve each season. You’ve probably heard of the saying, “Never judge a book by its cover”. This phrase perfectly defines and captivates the sport. I’ve run against many talented athletes throughout my athletic journey, and I've learned that in this sport you can’t tell how good someone is just by looking at them. It's not about how they look on the line, but rather how they looked at practice and training. What separates people in track and field is how hard they work when there is no crowd, or people cheering. It's all about the time we spent alone at and after practice, during the weekends and on long breaks from school. What have sports taught me about myself? Well for one, I'm not the most gifted or talented individual. I may not have the best equipment, or mentality when I need it. But sports have also taught me that I am a consistent individual, who is always willing to put the work in no matter the situation. Track and field has taught me to control my emotions, and to stay focused in all situations, because when it comes down to it. I need to stay in control, and have trust in myself and what I did to get to where I am today. I fell in love with the sport and all aspects of it. Even after I'm done competing, I will still watch and enjoy this sport, because it means so much to me and has helped me throughout my life.

If you would’ve asked me what I was doing after high school my senior year. I would've given you a different answer depending on the day, or the person. To be honest I had no idea what I was going to do. Simply not knowing what's next for a young black male, can be one of the worst positions to be in. Knowing that in society I’m already looked down upon. I had options, but no vivid path to follow. Yes, I was involved with multiple sports in school, a part of JROTC, maintained a GPA of 3.7 taking honors and AP classes, and working a job. But I never really cared for that. Not because I didn't like school, or working, I loved going to school, seeing friends, my favorite teachers, and coaches, and participating in everything I could. As for the job, I still work there, three years later, I simply do not quit once I start. Truthfully I feared spending so much of my time and energy but never having a set plan for after I graduated high school. My mother always told me she wanted the best for me. For me to have many doors open for me to go through, because she never had the opportunities that I could have. Looking back this is why I used up all my time doing different things. I needed a plan, with many backup plans just in case. So I stayed busy throughout school, playing sports, learning skills, participating in clubs and events, excelling in sports, and working as much as possible to save money. I hated when the topic of college got brought up. I had majors I was interested in studying. But the commitment scared me. What if I choose the wrong major? What if I was meant for something else? But instead, I ended up opening the wrong door. I feared the unknown, and I couldn’t pick a door to walk through. Furthermore, there was the fear of not being able to afford college. Which for obvious reasons made me even more hesitant. It wasn’t until my state meet in track, that I ran a great race. Running a new personal best in the 400m dash. The very next day I had calls from coaches offering me spots to their team. What was more surprising was that they were willing to offer me some money to commit to their schools. Now I wasn't the fastest high schooler, but I was up in my states leaderboards, my senior year. After that day I realized life had a plan for me. There weren't any hidden keys I was desperately searching for. I realized that when I was ready the door would open for me. Now what does my story have to do with achieving my education goals? Because I am aware that I am not flawless. I know I don’t have the financial freedom as some of my friends, to afford school. If they can start school, I can finish it and receive my degree because I am not going to give up. The Velez NJ Scholarship will allow me to further my education and earn my B.S. in Finance. All I ask is for you to not give up on me.

I volunteered in after school programs, developing my skills in responsibility. I saw adversity as a stepping stone to becoming a better person, it led me as a path to help the people around me and my community. Fast forward, I am now an incoming sophomore in college. My life has been a rollercoaster of challenges that I had to sacrifice and persevere through. Recognizing the power of education as a catalyst for change, I have also dedicated my time to mentoring and empowering students from underprivileged backgrounds, all while balancing the demands of being a student athlete. As a freshman on the men's track and field team at East Stroudsburg University, my passion for athleticism has had a profound impact on my academic experience. Participating in athletics has not only improved my physical health and well-being but has also taught me valuable life skills that have been instrumental in my academic success. Being a student-athlete requires a high level of dedication, time management, and discipline. Balancing the demands of practice and competitions with the demands of school can be challenging, but the structure and routine of daily practice and competitions have helped me develop a strong sense of self-discipline. I have learned to manage my time efficiently, make the most of my days, and set goals and work towards them. Growing up in a single-parent household with a mother as the sole provider has been a difficult and emotionally taxing journey.
