Hello, I'm Zach!
A few of my interests are robotics, balloon art, and football. I have been interested in robotics since I was a little kid watching the Jetsons. Seeing cool robot maids and pets living alongside people in a futuristic society sparked my overactive imagination, leading me to aspire to bring the future to the present. Robots are usually designed, like all technology, to make life easier, but making one is not an easy feat. Similarly, but very different, was how I grew interested in balloon art. One day when I was in fifth grade I went to my grandpa's house after school. He had a helium tank and a pack of twisting balloons, and I still have no idea why. I decided to try playing around, and I found a video tutorial showing how to make a balloon dog. From there I kept learning, making all sorts of different animals, and then venturing out to making animated characters from my favorite cartoons. Again, I got to use my creativity and imagination, this time to design my own versions of already existing characters and animals. My journey with football began in the fourth grade. My school had just started a flag football team for third and fourth graders, and I was super excited to play. I have played football every year since then, and it has become a large part of my life in high school. I love the combination of strategy and contact, making it my favorite sport to both play and watch. In everything I do I try to be as creative as possible, helping me to work harder, and encouraging me to continue learning.

During my Freshman year, I started weightlifting with the football team to prepare for the season. I had never weight lifted before then, so I was able to notice the differences it made right away. In just a couple of months, I was noticeably slimmer and more defined, so I knew it was working. During my junior year I noticed that outside of some sports teams, primarily football and basketball, students didn’t really use our weight room, but I wanted everyone to be able to feel as good as I did about my health. Our school had a policy that a coach or supervisor needed to be in the weight room for students to use it, which limited its use outside of those practices. My friends and I wanted to change that, so we created the weightlifting club at the start of my junior year. The mission of the weightlifting club is to encourage healthy habits and to teach everyone the proper way to exercise. Weightlifting improves both physical health and mental health simultaneously, as the sense of accomplishment that comes with weightlifting helps reduce anxiety. I had experienced this benefit already, so it was easy to get interested. We held daily after-school workouts, and within weeks had about 50 members showing up every day, which is about 15% of our whole school. Making the weight room available encouraged a large amount of our student population to work out for the first time. In fact, 20 out of those consistent members didn’t play any sports, and had never even been in the weight room before. I led one workout each week, where I would create a workout plan, demonstrate each exercise, and go around helping everyone to do them correctly and safely. I formed the plans using a combination of workouts I learned from various football workouts, as well as from exercises that I researched from various fitness blogs, apps, and videos. Once online learning began, we shifted from daily workouts together to creating weeklong body-weight workout plans that everyone would do asynchronously, with Friday follow-up meetings, where I lead a workout, and then we discuss how the weekly plan went. Even at home, I have been able to stay in good physical condition, which has definitely helped with the stress that seems abundant during lockdowns, and I know that I have been able to help many others feel the same way.
