Bio

Hi, my name is Zabel DerKosrofian and I am a current senior at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (BVT). At my vocational school, I am currently studying Information Technology, where I apply my skills in Networking, Cyber Security, Software, Hardware, and Programming in industry-level environments. During my time in high school, I have been involved in many things including being the Central District of the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils (CDMASC) Regional Vice President, SkillsUSA State Silver Medalist, Captain of the Girls Varsity Soccer Team, National Honors and National Technical Honors Society (NHS/NTHS) Officer, Massachusetts Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (MA HOBY) staff and more! I have also become a published author in Preparedness Without Paranoia (PWPORG.org)'s 13th edition magazine with my article "Trading Traditional for Exceptional", where I advocate for Vocational Education and the impact that it has had on my education and life as a whole. I enjoy helping my community, which shows in my 189 hours of service last school year, where I served at my church, school, and community to help positively impact others. I aspire to go to a 4-year college, where I can study both Exercise Science and Computer Science. I believe that this will provide me with the tools and foundation needed to pursue a career in Sports Technology, where I hope to create innovative technology to help athletes perform and train at their best.

I am a current senior at Blackstone Valley Tech in Upton, Massachusetts, where I have had the privilege of learning and growing my skills at a vocational school for the past 4 years in my trade of Information Technology (IT). In my time from freshman to senior year, I have learned so much about the IT field, from hardware and software, programming and networking, and so much more. This has given me the tools and skills to continue to grow and want to learn all I can about this field. This drive has helped me not only in my own life, but in helping others, as I am extremely passionate about helping others and giving back to my community. I have integrated my vocation into this philosophy of my life in many ways. Examples of this include presenting to industry professionals on the importance of Cyber Security at a conference, advocating on a national level through SkillsUSA for vocational and STEM education, and co-creating a website for the regional student council board that I am apart of. Through these events and networking, I have been able to help others with my knowledge and skills that I have learned. That is why I am so passionate about pursuing STEM, because I want to use my knowledge in this ever-growing field to help others for the good of the community. This want to help others, along with my passion of sports and leadership, have been my most favorite parts of discovery in high school, as I have been able to lead others in leadership positions on my school's Student Council, in my vocational trade, and in being captain of my school's soccer team. These experiences have helped me to see that I want to not only help others, but I want to be a role model and positive figure for others to look up to. The role models in my life have helped me in so many ways, and I want to do the same for others. My mom and sister have shown me that I can be a strong and confident woman, while my dad and brother have shown me that I can pursue any career of my choosing, no matter who I am. These role models, along with my philosophy that I have developed in high school from sports and my vocation have led me to realize my intended field of study. My planned field of study combines two of my favorite things: soccer and technology, which has led me to find a path that has barely been explored yet and is just starting to make its mark in the world: Sports Technology. Sports Technology is a very new field that is just starting to develop, and although this seems scary to most to go into a new field, it excites me more than anything. Sports Technology can be seen in the small chips that go into hockey jerseys or soccer undershirts, where athletes' performances are tracked and analyzed to prevent injury and optimize performance. This technology can also be seen in the tracking devices that first responders use that keep them safe and increase their chances of getting help if needed. These are just a few ways that Sports Technology can be used to help others, and to me, the endless possibilities of improving and helping others through technology is exciting and rewarding. That's why I want to pursue this career, because with all of the news about technology being bad for humans, I want to create technology that benefits humans for the better of the world.
