🧪 ⚛️ 👩🔧 If an electrophile loves a nucleophile, then I love organic chemistry. I apply my chemistry skills, preparing to be a pre-med student. Understanding that the future generation needs surgeons with a solid foundation in different STEM fields, I aim to be the future master. Excited to learn medical technologies, I wish someday I could use these technologies to restore patients’ lives that were broken by accidents or traumas.
Touring the Massachusetts General Hospital and Shriners Children’s Hospital, I heard the stories of pediatric patients, who suffer burns and related facial disfigurements. However, the skilled healthcare professionals helped the children to recover physically and emotionally, which was heartwarming to witness. These experiences led me to be curious about seeking out mentorship regarding regenerative medicine, surgery, and how to apply my studies to help patients like these children.

Ryan Stripling “Words Create Worlds” Scholarship for Young Writers
One of the most significant reasons why I love writing is that writing encourages me to experiment and to take risks, explore unconventional ideas, and challenge our assumptions. Do not get me wrong, I had teared more than 50 pages in my 100 pages notebook. Despite the eventually thin notebook I have right now, I am satisfied that I accomplished so much trial and error to bring up an excellent writing. I have published thriller, sci-fi, fantasy and non-fictions in TeenInk.com account. It is my monthly practice to created something. I hope this practice will lead to unexpected breakthroughs in our imaginative capabilities.
We have all been in some types of misunderstandings, but sometimes the situation we are in is too complex to express in one or two sentences. Personally, writing allows me to organize my thoughts, emotions, and ideas in a unique way instead of piecewise bullet points. It’s a chance to share my perspective with others. One evening for example, I wrote about a specific incident that had upset me — a miscommunication with a friend, resulting in her never talking to me. Wherever I saw her, I had a million words to tell her. All of them relate to how angry, jealous, and vulnerable I was living a life without her. However, I cannot happen to speak one word. I surprising showed no emotion in the public place. Surprisingly, I didn't even cry in front of her. I cried terribly at home last night. Later, I decided to resolve the awkward situation between us through writing. As I wrote, I realized that my feelings were more about my own insecurities than the situation itself. This insight helped me approach my friend with understanding rather than defending my own self-esteem. She seemed to notice this change in me and would embrace in the new me.
Not only can writing help in building strong friendship and relationships, but it also explore your imagination. Sometimes that is a way we temporarily escape from the harsh reality. Reading and writing novels are the keys to open up new universes. By the time my pencil touches the paper, I am confident that the creative ideas in my mind will not slip away - it will be there for an eternity. Then, my mind began to wander beyond the reality. Reality is boring. Imagination is exploration.
Last but not least, writing enhances imagination by providing a structured outline, especially when I write a long piece. Before I write, I am imagining narratives, developing diverse characters, and envisioning settings. I do this every time, as if my mind is a new big hit movie, and I am the director. I can hire new actor/actress and add in whatever prop, sound effects, light effects I want. The feeling that I own and control a world is so cool. This requires me to visualize scenarios vividly, pushing my brain to work harder. For instance, crafting a fantasy story involves imagining entire worlds, complete with intricate details like landscapes, cultures, politics, and histories. The more we write, the more skilled I become at building these elaborate writings.
Women in STEM Scholarship
Hello, I am Toni Yutong Chen. Here is a detailed introduction of me, as a STEM-girl, as a student, as a female individual in life, and as a person.
I am interested in machine learning. It is an increasingly popular field with applications across various industries such as finance, health care and education, making it a promising career path. It also opens doors to innovative applications from image and speech recognition to natural language processing. I want to have a systematic study of machine learning, which equips me with analytical skills, computational thinking and problem-solving abilities. These skills are valuable for me in today's data-driven world. I have self-studied many physics classes, which makes me understand the machine learning principles, and enables me to grasp fundamental concepts that are crucial for technological applications, such as understanding the behavior of matter and energy, which forms the basis for developing innovative technologies and solving real-world problems.
In my high school, I have taken STEM classes such as Java, python, c++, Algebra2/Trigonometry, calculus BC, Physics AP 1, Biology, counting and possibility and more. Unlike any stereotypical STEM school, I believe as a woman, I should not compare solely on techniques, but also the balance in life. Thus, I perfected my skills in drawing, choral singing, piano, and Chinese Calligraphy, to be an all-rounder in life.
Overall, machine in technology is the field that will greatly improve my thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills. I have many awards and qualifications, including MathLeague Contest in 2023 and got 2nd in the 9th division State round, and 15th place for National Competition. I attended the Science Olympiad in the National Championship Team, Kennedy Science Olympiad team, and I got top 3 awards many times in Crave the Wave, Roller Coaster, Fast facts and Code Buster events. Most recently, I received Honorable mention (top 25% competitors at Stanford Math).
In the future, I would like to pursue a STEM major for my undergraduate degree. My passion for mathematics and science has been a driving force in my academic journey. During my spare time, I take the initiative to self-study advanced math, AP physics 1 and chemistry classes targeting the chemistry olympiad. Through self-study, I have embraced the challenge of comprehending complex scientific concepts and their practical applications. I am eager to further cultivate my passion and academic potential within a STEM-focused environment, where I can continue to explore the frontiers of science.

Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Dear Billie,
Here are my three favorite song of yours, please take a look:
Blue, because as one of Billie Eilish’s newest comeback, this song shows me that my favorite singer is still thriving and making fantastic melodies. I personally love the soundtrack and intro. However, my favorite part has to be the chorus, because it stuck in my brain for 2 months. I also think that Blue is the heart of her new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft.
When the Party’s Over, because it is the first song I heard my high school choir sing, and that set my goal to be a choir singer as well. Later on the school choir performed When the Party’s Over during the annual debut concert. Sitting at the audience seat, I can't help but think what emo, and artistic mind Billie has while writing this song!
What Was I Made For. Congratulations that she slayed the Oscars stage, and I love the Barbie movie because it brings back nostalgia to my childhood, making me miss my own Barbie. Overall, this is a great song that makes me think about my own definition of my meaning of life. Hope there will be more Billie Eilish songs in movies!
I love you, Billie! I Hope I can be a fantastic singer just like you!!!
A sweet fan named Toni
