My name is Youngah Lee, and I am currently a second-year nursing student at Elmhurst University, preparing to begin my third year in the program. Nursing has always been a meaningful career path for me, not only because of the impact nurses have on individuals and communities, but also because healthcare runs deeply in my family. Many of my relatives work in different areas of healthcare, and growing up around their experiences gave me an early appreciation for the dedication, skill, and compassion the profession demands. Their influence helped shape my desire to pursue a nursing career where I can make a difference in people’s lives every day.
One of the aspects I love most about nursing is its balance between science and human care. Nurses use critical thinking and clinical skills, but they also build relationships with patients during some of the most vulnerable times in their lives. That connection is powerful and motivating. As I’ve progressed in my education, I’ve discovered a strong interest in becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). The field of nurse anesthesia fascinates me because it combines high-level technical knowledge with patient-centered care. I am drawn to the responsibility of ensuring patient safety and comfort during surgical procedures and admire the autonomy and trust that nurse anesthetists have in the operating room.
To prepare for this path, I’ve been proactive in seeking advice and guidance from academic and career advisors. I regularly meet with them to make sure I’m on track with my academic goals and to learn strategies that will support my success. I ask questions, seek out resources, and take time to understand the steps required for advanced practice nursing, especially in anesthesia. I know the path to becoming a CRNA is rigorous, but I am committed to doing the work it takes to reach that goal.
Another important part of my journey has been making meaningful friendships and connections along the way. Building relationships with fellow students not only makes nursing school more enjoyable, but it also strengthens my ability to work with different personalities, an essential skill in healthcare. Being exposed to people from different backgrounds helps me grow both personally and professionally, and it prepares me for the diverse teams and patient populations I will work with as a nurse.
In addition to my studies, I stay engaged with my peers, participate in class discussions, and make it a point to connect with professionals in the field whenever possible. These efforts help me stay focused and remind me of the purpose behind my journey. I’m excited to continue learning, growing, and gaining the experience needed to one day serve patients as a compassionate and skilled nurse anesthetist.
Pangeta & Ivory Nursing Scholarship
Nursing is more than a career to me; it is a deeply personal calling rooted in my family history and inspired by my desire to serve others. My decision to pursue nursing is tied to the legacy of my grandmother, who dedicated her life to this profession and passed down her values of compassion, resilience, and selflessness. Her stories about the joy and challenges of caring for patients left a profound impression on me and became the foundation of my passion for nursing.
Growing up, I watched my grandmother approach her work with dedication and a genuine desire to make a difference in people’s lives. She would often tell me about the patients she cared for, the families she comforted, and the moments when her presence brought hope and relief to those in need. She didn’t see her work as just a job but as a way to uplift her community and give back to those who were vulnerable. Her ability to connect with people, even in their most challenging times, taught me that nursing is not just about clinical skills—it’s about listening, understanding, and being present for others.
Her influence ignited a spark in me that has only grown over time. While I initially admired her from afar, I began to understand the importance of her work on a deeper level as I grew older. I realized that nursing is a unique profession where science and humanity intersect, allowing individuals to provide healing while showing empathy and care. This realization solidified my decision to follow in her footsteps and pursue a career in nursing.
My passion for nursing also stems from a desire to address the disparities in healthcare that I have witnessed. I have seen how socioeconomic factors and access barriers prevent people from receiving the care they need. As a nurse, I want to be an advocate for those who are underserved, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, receives compassionate and equitable care.
I believe nursing is a profession that demands both skill and heart, and I am committed to bringing both to my practice. As I work toward my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Elmhurst University, I am motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. Whether it’s by providing comfort during a difficult time, educating patients about their health, or simply being a source of kindness, I want to embody the values that my grandmother—and nurses like Pangeta McGrowther Ferguson and Ivory Riley—stood for.
Their lives remind me of the profound influence that nurses have on their patients and communities. By honoring their legacy, I hope to leave my own mark on this profession and inspire others to see the beauty and importance of nursing. Pursuing this path is not only a way for me to make a difference but also a way to honor my grandmother’s legacy and all the incredible nurses who have come before me.
Jase Davidsaver RN Memorial Scholarship
Nursing is more than a career—it is a commitment to improving lives, empowering communities, and advocating for the well-being of others. As a male nursing student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Elmhurst University, I recognize the opportunity I have to contribute to a profession that desperately needs passionate and dedicated individuals. My vision for making a positive impact on the nursing profession involves promoting inclusivity, addressing healthcare disparities, and fostering a culture of empathy and professionalism.
One of my primary goals as a future nurse is to contribute to diversifying the nursing workforce. As a male in a female-dominated field, I understand the importance of breaking stereotypes and encouraging more men to pursue careers in nursing. Representation matters, and by becoming a nurse, I hope to inspire others—especially young men—to see nursing as a fulfilling and impactful profession. By mentoring and sharing my journey with others, I aim to challenge outdated perceptions and demonstrate that nursing is a path for anyone with a passion for helping others.
Additionally, I plan to address healthcare disparities by advocating for underserved populations. Growing up, I saw how access to quality care could vary greatly depending on socioeconomic factors. These experiences shaped my desire to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has access to compassionate and equitable care. Through community health initiatives, patient education, and cultural sensitivity, I aim to bridge the gap between vulnerable populations and the resources they need to lead healthier lives.
Empathy and professionalism are cornerstones of the nursing profession, and I strive to embody these values in every patient interaction. I believe that listening, understanding, and showing genuine care are just as important as clinical skills. Patients are often at their most vulnerable when they seek care, and being a steady, compassionate presence can make a significant difference in their experience. I also aim to continuously improve my clinical knowledge and skills, ensuring that I provide the highest standard of care while maintaining the trust and respect of those I serve.
Finally, I hope to be an advocate for my peers and colleagues in the nursing field. The challenges nurses face, such as burnout and staffing shortages, are significant. By promoting self-care, teamwork, and a supportive environment, I want to contribute to a stronger, more resilient nursing community.
Through these efforts, I am committed to leaving a lasting, positive impact on the nursing profession—one that honors the legacy of individuals like Jase Davidsaver while helping to shape the future of healthcare.
Cindy J. Visser Memorial Nursing Scholarship
The desire to become a nurse has been deeply rooted in me since childhood, inspired by my grandmother, who dedicated her life to caring for others. My grandmother was a nurse, and her stories of compassion, resilience, and selflessness shaped my understanding of the profound impact nurses have on the lives of their patients and communities. She taught me that nursing is not just a profession but a way of serving humanity with heart and intention. Her legacy is the foundation of my passion for nursing and the values I carry as I pursue my education and career.
Cindy J. Visser’s life and work resonate deeply with my aspirations as a future nurse. Her ability to combine empathy, compassion, and professionalism is a standard I aim to emulate. Cindy’s career, spanning medical-surgical nursing, urgent care, hospice, and home health, demonstrates the versatility and adaptability required in nursing—qualities I hope to cultivate. Her commitment to treating patients with intentional care and dignity aligns with my philosophy of nursing: to view every patient as a person, not just a medical case.
As a student at Elmhurst University working toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, I am preparing myself to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. My ultimate goal is to work in community health, addressing disparities in access to care and promoting health equity. I hope to focus on preventive care and education, empowering individuals to take control of their health and well-being. Too often, vulnerable populations face barriers to care, and I want to be a nurse who bridges those gaps. Cindy’s career reminds me that nurses can make a difference in diverse settings, from hospitals to patients’ homes, and I aspire to carry that versatility into my own career.
Cindy’s love for nature, her community, and her family also inspires me to maintain balance and humanity in my nursing practice. She showed that a fulfilling life can come from both professional dedication and personal joy. Like Cindy, I believe in finding beauty in the small moments and extending kindness to everyone I meet. Whether I am hiking in the woods, spending time with loved ones, or simply helping someone feel heard, I want to live in a way that reflects her compassionate spirit.
By receiving the Cindy J. Visser Memorial Nursing Scholarship, I would honor her legacy by embodying her values in my education and future career. I am committed to becoming a nurse who serves with compassion, professionalism, and intentional care, just as Cindy did throughout her life. This scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of my education but also serve as a constant reminder of the standards I aim to uphold. I hope to carry Cindy’s spirit forward in everything I do, touching the lives of my patients and my community alike.
With Cindy as a guiding example, I believe I can make a difference in the world, one patient at a time.
Mary Alice Kramer Aspiring Nurse Scholarship
My passion for nursing is deeply rooted in my desire to help others and make a meaningful impact on their lives. From a young age, I have admired the role of nurses in healthcare—not only for their technical expertise but also for their ability to provide compassion, comfort, and hope to patients and their families. Nursing represents a unique blend of science and humanity, and I am drawn to the opportunity to be at the intersection of these two worlds.
My greatest inspiration for pursuing nursing is my grandmother, who devoted her life to the profession. Her dedication to caring for others and her ability to connect with patients on a personal level left a lasting impression on me. She was the kind of nurse who treated each patient as an individual, providing not only medical care but also emotional support and kindness. Her stories of resilience and selflessness have motivated me to follow in her footsteps and continue her legacy of service. I want to make her proud by carrying on her values of empathy, hard work, and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of others.
Beyond honoring my grandmother’s legacy, nursing is a career that allows me to fulfill my personal goals and aspirations. Helping others has always been a fundamental part of who I am, and nursing provides a meaningful way for me to channel that passion. I know that becoming a nurse will challenge me intellectually, emotionally, and physically, but I am ready to embrace these challenges because they will allow me to grow as a person and as a professional.
In my career, I hope to accomplish more than just providing excellent care—I want to build relationships with my patients and their families, becoming a source of comfort and support during their most difficult times. I also aspire to contribute to addressing the growing nursing shortage by inspiring others to join the field and showing how rewarding and impactful nursing can be.
Looking ahead, I see myself specializing in a field that allows me to make a direct and lasting impact, such as pediatrics or critical care. I also hope to one day mentor future nursing students, sharing my knowledge and experiences to help shape the next generation of compassionate caregivers.
Receiving this scholarship would not only help me achieve my educational goals but also serve as a reminder of the incredible legacy left by Mary Alice Kramer—a legacy I hope to honor through my own dedication to nursing. Just as she touched countless lives throughout her career, I hope to leave behind a legacy of care, compassion, and service to others.
Sara Jane Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I have been drawn to the health department. The desire to contribute to the well-being of others and ensure their safety has always been at the core of my aspirations. However, it is the nursing profession that truly captures my heart. Nursing, with its direct impact on people's lives and its emphasis on compassionate care, aligns perfectly with my values and goals. This journey is not just about fulfilling a career aspiration but about giving back to my family, especially my parents, who have invested so much in my success.
My passion for nursing stems from a profound desire to help people. There is something inherently rewarding about being able to make a tangible difference in someone's life, whether it's providing comfort in their time of need, assisting in their recovery, or simply offering a listening ear. The health department offers various roles that contribute to public well-being, but nursing provides a unique opportunity to connect with patients on a personal level. It allows me to be at the frontline of patient care, where I can directly influence and improve their health outcomes.
Ensuring the safety and well-being of others is a fundamental aspect of nursing that deeply resonates with me. Nurses are often the unsung heroes in healthcare, working tirelessly to monitor patients, administer medications, and provide critical support. The trust placed in nurses by patients and their families is immense, and I am committed to upholding that trust. By becoming a nurse, I can play a pivotal role in maintaining high standards of care and ensuring that patients receive the best possible treatment.
Another significant motivation for pursuing a nursing career is my desire to financially support my parents. They have dedicated so much of their time and resources to ensure that I have the opportunities to succeed. Their sacrifices have been immense, and I want to repay them by becoming a nurse. This profession not only aligns with my passion for helping others but also offers financial stability. By achieving success in nursing, I can provide my parents with the support and security they deserve, making their sacrifices worthwhile.
Recently, my resolve to become a nurse was further strengthened by a personal tragedy. My grandmother passed away due to health complications. Her struggle and the care she received during her final days had a profound impact on me. Witnessing the dedication and compassion of the nurses who attended to her reaffirmed my belief in the importance of this profession. It was a stark reminder of how critical quality nursing care is, especially during the most vulnerable moments of a person's life. This experience has fueled my determination to become a nurse and make a difference in the lives of others, just as those nurses did for my grandmother.
In conclusion, my love for the health department and my specific passion for nursing are driven by a deep-seated desire to help others and ensure their safety. The opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people's lives through nursing is both inspiring and fulfilling. Additionally, becoming a nurse allows me to financially support my parents, honoring their sacrifices and hard work. The recent passing of my grandmother has only strengthened my resolve to pursue this path, reinforcing the importance of compassionate and dedicated nursing care. I am committed to this journey and look forward to the day when I can proudly serve as a nurse, making a difference in the lives of those I care for and providing the best possible support for my family.
