My name is Yotam Schleyer, a Major (Res.) in the IDF, & I am about to begin my studies at the Harvard Kennedy School in July 2025. I am emerging from a difficult war, trying to rebuild my personal & family life, & embarking on a new path with one clear goal: returning to Israel equipped to help build a stronger, more responsible, & more united future in public service. I plan to focus on public leadership, crisis management, & national security, building the skills needed to take on senior roles in Israel’s civil service. I believe I have a role to play on campus too–especially now. Campuses across the U.S. have seen a rise in antisemitic rhetoric & actions, making it harder for nuanced, respectful dialogue to take place. In an atmosphere that can be hostile toward Israel, it is important that another voice is heard: a voice of responsibility, complexity, & hope. As someone who deeply understands the region’s complexity, but still believes in partnership, compassion, & shared responsibility. I intend to be there to connect & drive dialogue. I am more optimistic than ever. From the heart of war, I saw the spirit of the Israeli people. I saw how strong we are when we’re united, on the front lines & at home. I saw how we fight together, how we fall together, but most importantly: how we live together. That’s what drives me. That’s the path I believe in. That’s the path I am determined to lead when I return home. Thank you for your consideration & for believing in the power of service & rebuilding.
