He suffers from a rare, degenerative disease that strips away his mobility and independence, one slow, cruel piece at a time. I have watched him struggle against his own body, his own thoughts, and against a world that too often turns away from suffering. Over the years, I have fed him, lifted him, bathed him, and—more than anything—tried to remind him that his life still holds meaning, even when he cannot always see it himself. Then, in October 2023, I found myself on the other side of that fight. War erupted, and I was back in uniform, leading an intelligence team searching for hostages.
