I live with ghosts. Some are memories of war—horrific scenes that refuse to fade, replaying in my mind at night, gripping my thoughts when I least expect it. Others belong to someone still living, someone I have fought to keep alive for the past seventeen years. I was just a teenager when I became a caregiver to a former schoolmate, a friend whose body and mind betrayed him before he ever had a chance. He suffers from a rare, degenerative disease that strips away his mobility and independence, one slow, cruel piece at a time. I have watched him struggle against his own body, his own thoughts, and against a world that too often turns away from suffering. Over the years, I have fed him, lifted him, bathed him, and—more than anything—tried to remind him that his life still holds meaning, even when he cannot always see it himself. Then, in October 2023, I found myself on the other side of that fight. War erupted, and I was back in uniform, leading an intelligence team searching for hostages. The work was unrelenting, the stakes life and death. And then, in an explosive instant, everything changed. I suffered a brain injury that robbed me of my basic motor functions. Walking, holding a cup, even forming a coherent thought—these were no longer simple tasks. Recovery was grueling. My body healed faster than my mind. The nightmares, the flashbacks, the suffocating weight of PTSD—they lingered. And they still do. For the first time, I understood the isolation my friend had felt for so many years. The frustration of watching life move forward while your own body and mind betray you. The fear that you may never fully regain control. But I also understood resilience—not because I was strong, but because I had seen it up close, in him, in every moment he refused to let his illness define him. If he could fight, so could I. Mental illness doesn’t just affect the person who suffers—it spills over, changing the lives of those around them. Caregivers, family members, friends—we carry the weight in different ways, sometimes without realizing how heavy it has become. I have lived on both sides of that struggle. I have carried another’s pain, and I have learned to carry my own. Pursuing my Master of Science in Analytics is, for me, an act of reclaiming my future. It is a commitment to moving forward, even when the past tries to pull me back. Data science gives me purpose; it allows me to solve problems, to create something meaningful, to channel my mind toward innovation rather than the ghosts of war. But the financial burden of education is real, especially as I transition from military life to academia. This scholarship would provide the support I need to focus on what truly matters—building a future where my past does not define me. There is no neat ending to my story. PTSD does not disappear overnight, and neither does the responsibility of caring for someone who relies on me. But I keep moving forward, step by step. Because I have seen what happens when you stop. And I refuse to let that happen—to him or to me.
