I am passionate about the special education teaching profession because it focuses on recognizing each student’s unique strengths and helping them develop confidence in who they are. Over the past 10 years working in education, I have gained valuable experience supporting diverse learners, including 2 years working directly in special education and 6 years specifically supporting students with autism. These experiences have deepened my understanding of individualized instruction, patience, and the importance of building strong, trusting relationships with students. Through my work, I have seen how essential it is for students with special needs to feel understood, supported, and valued. This is why Professor Harold Bloom’s statement, “the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence,” resonates deeply with me. To me, a “sense of their own presence” means that students are aware of their abilities, feel confident expressing themselves, and understand that they have an important place in the classroom and the world. My mission as a future special education teacher is to create an environment where students feel safe to take risks, express their thoughts, and celebrate their progress. I will use differentiated instruction, visual supports, and positive reinforcement to meet each student’s individual needs. With my experience working with students with autism, I have learned the importance of structure, consistency, and communication strategies that support both academic and social-emotional growth. I will continue to use these approaches to help students build independence and self-confidence. Ultimately, my goal is to guide each student toward recognizing their own value and potential. By fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom, I will help my students develop not only academic skills, but also a strong sense of identity and presence that will stay with them beyond the classroom. Optional Fairy Tale: Once upon a time, there was a teacher who had spent many years learning the language of different learners. Some of her students spoke with words, others with gestures, pictures, or quiet expressions. For years, she worked alongside children who felt unseen, especially those who experienced the world differently. With patience and understanding, she helped them find ways to communicate, connect, and shine. One day, she realized her true mission was not just to teach lessons, but to help each child discover their own voice. As her students grew more confident, their once quiet classroom became filled with expression, joy, and pride. And the teacher knew that by helping them find their presence, she had helped them find their place in the world.
