Barreir Opportunity Scholarship
As a daughter of immigrants who did not get the chance to attend high school due to Financial
Necessities I know how important education is.
My name is Yessenia Valenzuela and education is really important to me because I grew up in a family where working from a young age was necessary. My parents and family quit their education in middle school due to money problems in Mexico. But my Mom and Dad always given me and my siblings everything we need so me don’t have to live like them.
I am really thankful for the opportunity’s they have provided me with.
My dad has always told me “La pala pesa más que un lápiz así que estudia” which in English means“study because a pencil weighs less than a shovel” I grew up with constantly hearing that saying but as a little girl it didn’t make much sense. When I entered middle school everything started to click. Middle school is when I started to realize how important education was and how we should not take it for granted. Many classmates I had class with would take school as a joke but on other hand I didn’t. I will feel joy and happiness walking home with an honor roll report card and most importantly I will feel fulfillment when I would see my parents reactions to my grades even though I had to translate some of it for them to understand what they were looking at.
When I enrolled in high school I was already 2 credits ahead because of the challenge exams I had taken instead of the Spanish exams I was so proud of myself. I started and currently am taking AP classes and I am an a dual enrollment class at Pima community college taking medical and legal interpretation. I am also enrolled in a CNA program to be able to graduate with a job while I go to college and I have passed my TSA in Agriculture.
I am thankful for everything that my parents have taught me and for all my teachers that have been there when I need to ask questions about college and how I can get a chance to apply to them.
Education is always going to be important to me because I get opportunities that I never thought I would have like traveling, meeting new people and being able to learn about new discoveries. But most importantly getting the chance and opportunity to have a diploma an education that many people would want to have but many people cannot due to many factors that life puts us through.
I am forever thankful for all the nights and assignments that I have stayed up through because of how important I know education is. I want to be able to become a nurse or radiology technician as well as have my medical and legal license so families like mine don’t have to struggle to understand their doctors or nurses, that is how I will honor my parents sacrifice.
This scholarship will help me continue my parents dream of seeing me graduate from college without the weight of a shovel but only the weight of my pencil.
