Serving my community is important to me because I know what it feels like to need support and not always have everything figured out on your own. A few of the opportunities I’ve had came from people and programs that helped me along the way, so I’ve learned that success isn’t something you do completely alone. As I’ve been finishing my associate’s degree and getting ready to transfer to Rutgers, I’ve realized how much community matters in college and outside of it. Sometimes you get so caught up in stress and anxiety that you forget to look around and ask for help. Being part of EOF especially showed me that a lot of students are dealing with similar challenges, whether it’s financial stress, balancing work and school, or just trying to stay motivated. Having that kind of support made a big difference for me, and it made me want to be that same kind of support for someone else one day. Even at work, I’ve learned that small things matter, sometimes even more than larger gestures. Whether it’s helping a customer solve a problem or just making someone’s day a little easier, some interactions stick with people more than some might realize. It made me realize that serving your community doesn’t always have to be something big, crazy or formal. Sometimes it’s just being helpful, patient, and consistent. I also care about giving back because I don’t take the opportunities I’ve been given for granted. I acknowledge and appreciate every opportunity as not everyone has the same access to resources or guidance. I want to be someone who contributes in a positive way, especially for people who are in situations similar to mine, giving to those who are in need of a helping hand. In the future, I want to work in marketing in the beauty industry, and I would like to use that space to promote confidence and make people feel included, not left out. Making sure people feel comfortable, confident and safe is a big characteristic that I'd like to carry on into my future. Overall, serving my community matters to me because I’ve experienced what it’s like to be supported, I know what it's like to need help and comfort. I want to be that someone who is able to do the same for others in my own way, whether that’s through school, work, or my future career.
