An impactful physician assistant is compassionate, culturally competent, community-driven, and committed to equity. These qualities are not just ideals—I live them daily as a Black woman in the military, a student from an underserved background, and a future PA-C determined to uplift others. Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, I was surrounded by a vibrant Black community that shaped my understanding of healthcare. I witnessed the mistrust many had toward the medical system—not from apathy, but from a lack of representation and understanding. People turned to home remedies because they didn’t see providers who looked like them or respected their lived experiences. That’s why representation matters. It builds trust, bridges gaps, and transforms fear into empowerment. As a future PA, I will be a visible and vocal advocate for culturally responsive care. I want my patients to see themselves in me and know they are safe, respected, and valued. I will prioritize transparency and evidence-based education, especially in communities where misinformation and systemic inequities have eroded trust. Whether it’s clarifying medication safety during pregnancy or explaining chronic disease management, I will ensure my patients receive accurate, accessible information. But trust isn’t built in exam rooms alone—it’s built in the community. I plan to meet people where they are: at football games, churches, festivals, and schools. I will host free health screenings, speak to students about preventive care, and attend local events to make healthcare approachable and visible. Accessibility is the foundation of trust, and I will be present and proactive in my outreach. Mentorship is another way I aim to make an impact. I am committed to mentoring students from underrepresented backgrounds, especially Black women in STEM. Representation not only inspires—it reassures. By helping diversify the healthcare pipeline, I hope to create a future where more patients see providers who understand their stories. Through partnerships with local organizations, I will organize health fairs, educational workshops, and outreach events like those at the CARES for the Unhoused Clinic. These initiatives allow me to serve vulnerable populations while educating the public about the PA role and the importance of preventive care. I also plan to use social media to share accurate health information, debunk myths, and amplify community resources—because digital advocacy is essential in today’s world. My dual service in both civilian and military healthcare settings gives me a unique perspective on the disparities that affect access, outcomes, and trust. I will use this experience to bridge gaps in care and advocate for policies that promote equity, especially in underserved areas. Above all, I will listen. Culturally responsive care means understanding patients’ beliefs, fears, and preferences, and incorporating them into shared decision-making. Whether discussing reproductive health or mental wellness, I will ensure my patients feel heard and empowered. An impactful PA doesn’t just treat illness—they build trust, uplift communities, and lead with compassion. Through mentorship, outreach, advocacy, and culturally competent care, I will embody these values and help ensure the PA profession remains inclusive, accessible, and community-centered.

An impactful Physician Assistant (PA) embodies qualities such as empathy, dedication, and a commitment to addressing healthcare inequities. From my experiences, I believe I embody these attributes in several ways. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the struggles within my community, especially among the homeless population. This early exposure to the harsh realities of life instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a desire to help those in need. For instance, when I encountered a man experiencing a medical emergency, my instinct was to help, despite my young age and limited knowledge. This incident was a pivotal moment in my life, shaping my understanding of the importance of compassion and immediate action in healthcare. It taught me that empathy is not just about feeling for others but also about taking concrete steps to alleviate their suffering. My journey into medicine was driven by personal experiences with family health issues and the lack of adequate medical guidance. This motivated me to pursue a career where I could make a difference. I have spent considerable time in hospitals, both as a visitor and a professional, which has solidified my commitment to providing comprehensive care and support to patients and their families. Whether it was my grandmother’s stroke or my mother’s diabetes, these experiences highlighted the gaps in healthcare education and support, particularly in underrepresented communities. My dedication to healthcare is rooted in these personal experiences, driving me to ensure that others do not face the same challenges my family did. Witnessing the disparities in healthcare access and quality, especially in underrepresented minority communities, has fueled my passion for creating better access to medical care. My goal is to serve underserved areas and ensure that everyone receives the care they deserve. The inequities I observed were not just statistical data but real-life stories of people in my community who suffered due to lack of access to proper healthcare. This realization has been a driving force behind my desire to become a PA, as I aim to bridge these gaps and provide equitable healthcare solutions. My role as a protector extends beyond my community to my service in the United States Army. Here, I have learned the importance of physical and mental preparation to aid others effectively. This experience has reinforced my dedication to safeguarding the health and welfare of soldiers and civilians alike. Serving in the military has taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of teamwork, all of which are crucial qualities for a PA. It has also provided me with a unique perspective on the healthcare needs of military personnel and their families, further broadening my understanding and commitment to service. In summary, my life experiences and professional journey have equipped me with the qualities necessary to be an impactful PA. My empathy, dedication, commitment to addressing healthcare inequities, versatility, and protective nature all contribute to my ability to provide exceptional care and support to those in need. My goal is to be a part of the growing changes in the healthcare system, fighting to fix the inequities and ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need.
