    As a first-generation student being accepted into any UC university would be a dream come true for me. I come from an undocumented family that barely graduated middle school. Even though my parents have lived here for years, our biggest struggle has been the language barrier. I have always had the responsibility of translating everything my teachers wanted to communicate to my parents. This has made it difficult to take advantage of the academic possibilities that are out there waiting for me because they lack the knowledge to know my academic needs to support me. I belong to a family of seven who live in a house with two rooms in a low-income neighborhood in Oak Park. My living situation has always been difficult. I have slept in many places in my house but never in a bedroom, I can call my own. I've lived in an attic that got extremely hot during the summer and on a couch in my living room without privacy. Nowadays, I use an old broken RV that my parents used to rent to make extra money. My room is parked in the backyard and depend on a small heater to keep me warm on cold nights. I haven't had the ideal space, academic, or economic support in my years as a student throughout my entire life. I have two sisters who have already tried to pursue the community college route but ended up dropping out to start working in order to pay for their education. My parents involuntarily held my sisters back from going to universities because they didn't know that outside are social, economic, and academic resources for us. My sisters didn’t know where to look for opportunities or who to talk to. Today I want to believe that I have a better chance because I’m using all my resources to find scholarships and grants. I've seen my sister's story and I plan to take a different route. I want to apply to universities that will challenge me and educate me. I want to give it my all to be capable of saying I started the change in my family. I'm not the only one in my family to try to change our circumstances, but today it is my turn. My situation motivates me to achieve the life my parents wanted for us and themselves when they decided to come to the United States. This inspires me to put more effort into furthering my education because I strongly believe education will give me the opportunity to grow as a person and professionally. I want to pursue a career to show my parents that their efforts and struggles to come to this country weren't for granted. We have suffered great struggles already, and I think the time to change the page is here today.

    I came from an elementary school that struggled with state scores and education gaps, so I was not prepared for middle school where assignments are more academically challenging. I was not prepared to give my full potential. Middle school was a whole new field for me. The amount of workload my teachers said they would assign us wasn't my normal amount and quickly tensed up. I got home that day and began to stress out a lot. I stopped eating for a while, drinking water, taking care of myself, and stopped talking to my family to focus on school work and not to let them see me cry. I calmed myself down for a little bit. In December of 7th grade, my teacher assigned a project after reading a book. I felt my eyes welling up with tears. I could not handle the workload, I felt incompetent and stressed. My heart was racing at what felt like 100 miles per hour, I couldn't breathe normally for a couple of minutes. At that moment, I realized I was academically behind compared to the expected writing level. I was ashamed to ask for help, I had no one to ask. This took a huge toll on my mental health. I could not depend on my parents for support since they only spoke Spanish and didn't know anything about school but most importantly I prayed to God to help me overcome this challenge. I finally decided to ask my teacher for support. She helped me break down the project into smaller parts. I invested double the amount of hours expected in the project. I had no other options to cope with my lack of writing skills. I needed to compensate for my lack of knowledge and skills through determination and newly founded disciplined hard work. I received a perfect score. This experience has taught me how to manage my time and developed the skill of motivating myself to overcome any assignment. I learned to look for academic support when needed because unfortunately, my parents are not academically prepared to guide me. Overcoming the fear of seeking support, helped me to see my assignments as achievable when facing challenges. Her help with my mental health was amazing, I couldn't thank her enough. Not only that but praying to God helped me so much because without him I couldn't have done it. His love and his guidance have helped me so much over the years. I can't do anything without him, I am nothing without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Not being ready was not going to define my success, my determination to transform the outcomes did. This experience transformed me from being unprepared for a project to becoming one of the top students in my 2024 class by achieving a GPA of 4.2 and ranking 17th out of 529 students. This experience has helped me believe that I can succeed in my career opportunities at UC's despite any academic challenge that I may encounter because I now know my capabilities and believe in myself.     Janie Mae "Loving You to Wholeness" Scholarship
    During 10th grade, I was offered the position to coach the middle school girl's lacrosse team for an organization I played for the prior year. Not many girls signed up to play in my 10th-grade year, so I was allowed to join their team. My responsibility was to motivate and prepare them for the games while ensuring they had fun. The team had a wide range of knowledge and skilled players with many girls with low self-confidence and a lack of skills. Leveling them up was tough, and creating spaces to connect was urgent to break the ice. I started with the basics, getting to know each other to strengthen our bond. We had extra practices to focus on those who needed more support and we put in an additional separate schedule to reinforce self-esteem. We recognized our areas of growth and used our strengths to overcome emotional fears and physical challenges. I encouraged the girls to set goals every two weeks and I would discuss our progress and areas for improvement. We won our very first game with a score of 15-3, marking an incredible start to our season. However, we faced losses. Many of the girls became disheartened, including myself. We were losing the confidence we had just developed. It was a wake-up call for me. As their coach, I encouraged these girls to play their hearts out no matter the scoreboard. This experience taught me that being a great leader means persevering through the challenges. Our team developed a new mentality with my leadership and restored positive self-esteem. We redefined the idea of winning, not as being at the top, or the scoreboard, but rather about working towards goals as a team and having fun. My leadership positively impacted team growth. As a freshman, I noticed a decline in school spirit and student engagement due to Covid-19. Our Associated Student Body (ASB), was hosting a rally. I was excited but noticed many students were not as interested or as excited. ASB Officers did their best, and their effort to think of an online rally and plan the virtual games was inspiring. I joined ASB. My teacher and I were motivated to bring school spirit. I contacted past officers to get their insight about past rallies. I was not prepared to give my full potential. In 7th grade, my teacher assigned a project after reading a book. I felt my eyes welling up with tears. I could not handle the workload, I felt incompetent and stressed. At that moment, I realized I was academically behind compared to the expected writing level. I was ashamed to ask for help, I had no one to ask. I could not depend on my parents for support since they only speak Spanish. I asked my teacher for support. She assisted me in breaking down the project into smaller parts. I invested double the amount of hours expected in the project. I had no other options to cope with my lack of writing skills. I needed to compensate for my lack of knowledge and skills through determination and newly founded disciplined hard work. I received a perfect score. This experience has taught me how to manage my time and developed the skill of motivating myself to overcome any assignment. Nowadays, I use an old broken RV that my parents used to rent to make extra money. My room is parked in the backyard and depend on a small heater to keep me warm on cold nights. I haven't had the ideal space, academic, or economic support in my years as a student throughout my entire life. I have two sisters who have already tried to pursue the community college route but ended up dropping out to start working in order to pay for their education. My parents involuntarily held my sisters back from going to universities because they didn't know that outside are social, economic, and academic resources for us. My sisters didn’t know where to look for opportunities or who to talk to. Today I want to believe that I have a better chance because I’m using all my resources to find scholarships and grants.     Highschool as everyone knows is pretty difficult but if you surround yourself with people who will go through thick and thin with you, your experience won't be too bad. In high school my freshman year, I took AP/ advanced classes. No one in my family has taken AP classes so I was going into this all alone. Once in those AP classes, I quickly noticed I was one of the only 3 other Latinas who also hesitantly decided to take AP classes. I took AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Chemistry, Honors 10 and 11th English, Advanced Ceramics, AP United States Government and Politics, AP English Literature and Composition, and AP Statistics. My most challenging class was AP Chemistry; my only knowledge before taking that class was from freshman-year Biology. I needed lots of help but didn't have support from my family members. I was embarrassed because everyone else in my classes had help and emotional support from their parents meanwhile I was at home translating documents for my parents who only speak and read Spanish. I passed my AP Chemistry, Honors English 10th and 11th Spanish class with A's and I am about to finish all my other classes with A's.

I was astonished by studying how the environment they lived in influenced their beak depth, diversifying their population. My fascination with animals branched into Zoology when I chose my major. I always found animals interesting because they are different and extraordinary creatures not only biologically but also their behavioral characteristics. I admire their survival skills to adapt despite humans constantly altering their environment. Outside the classroom, I often found myself reading articles about the relationship between animals and humans. Despite not having in-person experience, I often see documentaries and study research related to the animal kingdom. I keep trying to understand not only our world but also the interactions among us. I was not prepared to give my full potential. Middle school was a whole new field for me. The amount of workload my teachers said they would assign us wasn't my normal amount and quickly tensed up. I got home that day and began to stress out a lot. I stopped eating for a while, drinking water, taking care of myself, and stopped talking to my family to focus on school work and not to let them see me cry. I calmed myself down for a little bit. In December of 7th grade, my teacher assigned a project after reading a book. I felt my eyes welling up with tears. I could not handle the workload, I felt incompetent and stressed. My heart was racing at what felt like 100 miles per hour, I couldn't breathe normally for a couple of minutes. At that moment, I realized I was academically behind compared to the expected writing level. I was ashamed to ask for help, I had no one to ask. This took a huge toll on my mental health. I could not depend on my parents for support since they only spoke Spanish and didn't know anything about school. I finally decided to ask my teacher for support. She assisted me in breaking down the project into smaller parts. I invested double the amount of hours expected in the project. I had no other options to cope with my lack of writing skills. I needed to compensate for my lack of knowledge and skills through determination and newly founded disciplined hard work. I received a perfect score. This experience has taught me how to manage my time and developed the skill of motivating myself to overcome any assignment. I learned to look for academic support when needed because unfortunately, my parents are not academically prepared to guide me.     During 10th grade, I was offered the position to coach the middle school girl's lacrosse team for an organization I played for the prior year. Not many girls signed up to play in my 10th-grade year, so I was allowed to join their team. My responsibility was to motivate and prepare them for the games while ensuring they had fun. The team had a wide range of knowledge and skilled players with many girls with low self-confidence and a lack of skills. Leveling them up was tough, and creating spaces to connect was urgent to break the ice. I started with the basics, getting to know each other to strengthen our bond. We had extra practices to focus on those who needed more support and we put in an additional separate schedule to reinforce self-esteem. We recognized our areas of growth and used our strengths to overcome emotional fears and physical challenges. I encouraged the girls to set goals every two weeks and I would discuss our progress and areas for improvement. We won our very first game with a score of 15-3, marking an incredible start to our season. However, we faced losses. Many of the girls became disheartened, including myself. We were losing the confidence we had just developed. It was a wake-up call for me. As their coach, I encouraged these girls to play their hearts out no matter the scoreboard. This experience taught me that being a great leader means persevering through the challenges. Our team developed a new mentality with my leadership and restored positive self-esteem. We redefined the idea of winning, not as being at the top, or the scoreboard, but rather about working towards goals as a team and having fun. My leadership positively impacted team growth. As a freshman, I noticed a decline in school spirit and student engagement due to Covid-19. Our Associated Student Body (ASB), was hosting a rally. I was excited but noticed many students were not as interested or as excited. ASB Officers did their best, and their effort to think of an online rally and plan the virtual games was inspiring. I joined ASB. My teacher and I were motivated to bring school spirit. I contacted past officers to get their insight about past rallies. We decided on a winter rally and leading up to the rally would be spirit days. As the days went on, I noticed a change in the atmosphere of my school. Students were eager to participate and began to dress up during spirit week. The first rally was a huge success, with students from all grade levels coming together to celebrate. The energy was infectious, and it felt like we had rekindled some of the school spirit, but more needed to be done. I planned to organize fundraisers throughout the school year for our junior prom that was happening the following year. With the help of others I organized these fundraisers at school; Halloween grams, chocolate box sales, paletas, concha with hot chocolate, and reached out to local businesses for sponsorship.     In my first year of high school, I took Molecular Biology, and my interest in animals flourished when I learned about Finches in the Galapagos island. I was astonished by studying how the environment they lived in influenced their beak depth, diversifying their population. My fascination with animals branched into Zoology when I chose my major. I always found animals interesting because they are different and extraordinary creatures not only biologically but also their behavioral characteristics. I admire their survival skills to adapt despite humans constantly altering their environment. Outside the classroom, I often found myself reading articles about the relationship between animals and humans. Despite not having in-person experience, I often see documentaries and study research related to the animal kingdom. I keep trying to understand not only our world but also the interactions among us. It keeps me thinking about how we can coexist and preserve our habitats. I worry knowing that climate change and population will have major effects on animals' habitats. My values, as a human being, are to respect the ecosystem, and environment, to care for animals, and to conserve and manage wilderness areas where animals thrive. As a future zoologist, my dream is to be prepared to contribute my knowledge to the conservation of endangered species. I hope to inspire people to learn the correct way to respect and care for animals and their habitats. I am extremely motivated to stress the importance of what animal interactions do for the ecosystem. In the future, I want to work in a space filled with animals and wilderness areas, whether it is studying animal behavior or researching the impact animals have on our environment. Zoology is a field with never-ending learning material, the more you investigate the more knowledge you gain about how it is all connected.     In my first year of high school I took Molecular Biology, and my interest in animals flourished when I learned about Finches in the Galapagos island. I was astonished by studying how the environment they lived in influenced their beak depth, diversifying their population. My fascination with animals branched into Zoology when I chose my major. I always found animals interesting because they are different and extraordinary creatures not only biologically but also their behavioral characteristics. I admire their survival skills to adapt despite humans constantly altering their environment. Outside the classroom, I often found myself reading articles about the relationship between animals and humans. Despite not having in person experience, I often see documentaries and study researches related to the animal kingdom. I keep trying to understand not only our world but also the interactions among us. It keeps me thinking about how we can coexist and preserve our habitats. I worry knowing that climate change and population will have major effects on animals' habitats. My values, as a human being, are to respect the ecosystem, environment, to care for animals, and to conserve and manage wilderness areas where animals thrive. As a future zoologist, my dream is to be prepared to contribute my knowledge to the conservation of endangered species. I hope to inspire people to learn the correct way to respect and care for animals and their habitats.     During my 10th grade, I was offered the position to coach the middle school girl's lacrosse team for an organization that I played for the prior year. Not many girls signed up to play in my 10th-grade year, so I was allowed to join their team. My responsibility was to motivate and prepare them for the games while ensuring they had fun. The team had a wide range of knowledge and skilled players with many girls with low self-confidence and a lack of skills. Leveling them up was tough, and creating spaces to connect was urgent to break the ice. I started with the basics, getting to know each other to strengthen our bond. We had extra practices to focus on those who needed more support and we put in an additional separate schedule to reinforce self-esteem. We recognized our areas of growth and used our strengths to overcome emotional fears and physical challenges. I encouraged the girls to set goals every two weeks and I would discuss our progress and areas for improvement. Those who already knew how to play did great in supporting the growth of the other players. We won our very first game with a score of 15-3, marking an incredible start to our season. However, as the season progressed, we faced losses. Many of the girls became disheartened, including myself. We were losing the confidence we had just developed. It was a wake-up call for me. As their coach, I had to encourage these girls to play their hearts out no matter the scoreboard. I reminded them not only to play with passion but with joy. This experience taught me that being a great leader means persevering through the challenges. With my leadership, our team developed a new mentality and restored positive self-esteem. We redefined the idea of winning, not as being at the top, or the scoreboard, but rather about working towards goals as a team and having fun. My leadership positively impacted team growth. We did it together because there is no "I" in a team. Outside of sports, I love participating in both school spirit and student engagement but due to Covid-19 my school needed some help to get some spirirt. We decided on a winter rally and leading up to the rally would be spirit days. As the days went on, I noticed a change in the atmosphere of my school. Students were eager to participate and began to dress up during spirit week. The first rally was a huge success, with students from all grade levels coming together to celebrate. The energy was infectious, and it felt like we had rekindled some of the school spirit, but more work needed to be done. I came up with a plan to organize fundraisers throughout the school year for our junior prom that was happening the following year. With the help of others I organized these events at school; Halloween grams, chocolate box sales, paletas, concha with hot chocolate, and reached out to local businesses for sponsorship. With the money we raised, we were able to cover the costs of decorations for Junior prom.

I hope to inspire people to learn the correct way to respect and care for animals and their habitats. I am extremely motivated to stress the importance of what animal interactions do for the ecosystem. In the future, I want to work in a space filled with animals and wilderness areas, whether it is studying animal behavior or researching the impact animals have on our environment. Zoology is a field with never-ending learning material, the more you investigate the more knowledge you gain about how it is all connected. Studying Zoology and veterinary medicine gives a voice to those who do not have one. One day, I want to say I collaborated with others to preserve nature and biodiversity. I want to be a part of that change. I can't wait to be able to help all types of animals, I've always had a soft spot for animals and to be able to help them is such a big dream of mine. I really hate seeing animals that are in danger and in dire need of medical help, especially because they don't ask to get sick, or hunted.

    I love playing Luigi's Mansion with friends and family. The two-player mode isn't available until an hour or so into the story, but at that point, the rest of the game becomes one of the best co-op games. We always have a game night where my cousins and I meet up at my sister's house with a bunch of snacks and food and play different Nintendo games. I love the fact that Gooigi has infinite lives so my cousins and I fool around most of the time trying to see who can die the fastest or who lasts the longest alive. The people who win the awards of " Dies the fastest" and "Longest survivor" choose between a gift we all pitched in for or the only desert we bought for the night. We love the fact that the game isn't hard and love solving many of the game's puzzles. Playing with friends and family is just so fun, it's so relieving. I get the same feeling when I play sports, when I'm on the pitch all of my stresses and worries fly out the window. It's only you, the ball, your teammates, and your opponents. When playing on the game it's playing video games while goofing around but also trying to prove you are the best player even if you suck and get made fun of. When surrounded by loved ones you forget all the worries in the world and focus in on the game and following around.

    As a first-generation student being accepted into any UC university would be a dream come true for me. I come from an undocumented family that barely graduated middle school. Even though my parents have lived here for years, our biggest struggle has been the language barrier. Thus, since the age of five, I have acted as the translator for everything my teachers wanted to communicate to my parents. This has made it difficult to take advantage of the academic possibilities that are out there waiting for me because since my parents are unaware of how to navigate the educational system, they became passive participants in my education and did not how to support me academically. l belong to a family of seven who all live in a house with two rooms in Oak Park, one of Sacramento’s lowest-income neighborhoods. My living situation has always been difficult. I have slept in many places in my house, but never in a bedroom I can call my own. I have lived in an attic that got extremely hot during the summer and on a couch in my living room without privacy. Nowadays, I use an old, broken RV. My room is parked in the backyard and I depend on a small heater to keep me warm on cold nights. Even though I have not had the ideal living or learning space throughout my life, I have still managed to thrive and focus on my education. I have two sisters who have already tried to pursue the community college route but ended up dropping out as they became overwhelmed by the pressures of life, the challenges of higher education, and the feeling that they needed to quit school to save money. Unfortunately, my parents unintentionally exacerbated this feeling for them as they were unaware of how to support them to find success. Determined to not follow this same path, I am connecting with counselors and other resources outside of my community to find out how to utilize the numerous social, emotional, economic, and academic resources that we qualify for. My situation motivates me to achieve the life my parents wanted for us and themselves when they immigrated to the United States. I want to pursue a career to show my parents that their efforts and struggles to come to this country were not in vain. Today, I believe that I have a better chance because I am using all my resources to find scholarships and grants. I want to apply to universities that will challenge me and educate me. Despite the barriers I have faced thus far, I am determined to utilize these hardships as further motivation to break the cycle. I want to give it my all to be capable of saying I not only started the change in my family but contributed to a more positive narrative about finding success no matter what circumstances one may face.

    It's so hard choosing one but I would say her acting career is the one I admire the most. I have watched shows and movies starring in them since Shake it Up to the most recent Spider-Man movies. I grew up with her and seeing her range between characters is truly amazing, her range over the years has shown how much experience she's had over the years, how she enjoys this passion of hers, and how amazing she is at acting. Zendaya is a very special and very talented young woman, her experience in the acting industry has opened up many more opportunities for her. She's such an amazing actor because she does an amazing job of making those who are watching feel what she wants them to feel, and an amazing job of really making the viewer feel a certain way with her tone, manner, talking, and acting. Amazingly, she hasn't lost passion for it and I hope she never will, she is one of the best actors in Hollywood. Her passion for acting is very easy to see on the screens, her acting is very influential to people. To become an actor just like her would be anyone's dream if their heart is set on acting.
