Hot Jazz Jubilee Music Scholarship
My musical journey began in fifth grade when I chose to play the clarinet in my elementary school's concert band. While I enjoyed music from the beginning, I would say I did not become truly serious about it until my freshman year of high school. That year, I joined my school's jazz band, which focused primarily on traditional jazz. Joining that ensemble opened my eyes to a completely new side of music and helped me discover a passion that continues to grow today.
One of the most impactful experiences of my musical career happened during that same year when my jazz band traveled to New Orleans. As the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans was unlike anything I had ever experienced. During the trip, I had the opportunity to watch renowned clarinetist Doreen Ketchens perform live. It was a surreal moment because I had spent countless hours watching her performances and instructional videos online while learning more about jazz. Seeing her perform in person showed me what was possible through dedication, passion, and hard work. That experience inspired me to dive deeper into jazz and broaden my musical interests beyond the clarinet.
Since then, I have developed a strong interest in jazz saxophone and have continued expanding my musical knowledge and abilities. Music has become much more than a hobby for me. It is one of the most meaningful ways I express myself. Whether I am practicing, performing, or learning something new, music allows me to let go of stress, connect with others, and continue pushing myself toward new goals. It has taught me discipline, perseverance, and confidence, qualities that extend far beyond the rehearsal room.
I want to continue learning about music because I know there is always more to discover. Every performance, rehearsal, and lesson offers an opportunity to improve. I plan to continue my musical journey at Sacramento State, where I hope to audition for both the jazz ensembles and concert bands. I am excited by the opportunity to study music alongside talented musicians and continue developing my skills as a performer.
Looking toward the future, I would love to perform regularly while also teaching students individually on the side. Some of the most influential musicians in my life have shared their knowledge and encouragement with me, and I hope to do the same for future generations of musicians. In addition, I have enjoyed helping with music camps for young jazz musicians, which has shown me how rewarding it can be to support others in their musical growth.
I absolutely see myself continuing to play jazz throughout my life. Jazz has taught me how to persevere through challenges, think creatively, and express myself in ways words cannot. It has become a part of who I am, and I cannot imagine my future without it. Whether I am performing, teaching, or simply continuing to learn, I know that jazz and music will always be an important part of my life.
