Pastor Thomas Rorie Jr. Furthering Education Scholarship
Growing up, I was surrounded by love, laughter, and the warmth of family gatherings, but as I got older, I started to see the struggles beneath the surface. My parents worked hard to provide for me, often putting their own needs on the back burner to make sure I had every opportunity they didn't. One of the moments that truly opened my eyes was when I learned about their struggles with dental care; they had spent so much of their lives without proper treatment because they couldn't afford it. That moment changed something in me. It made me realize just how much I had taken for granted and gave me a deep sense of responsibility to make a difference. Earning a college degree is not just about personal success for me; it is about breaking cycles, creating opportunities, and honoring the sacrifices that my parents made.
A college education represents more than just a piece of paper or a stepping stone to a career. To me, a college education is the key to the future I want to build for myself and for those who have been denied basic healthcare due to financial hardship. My parents’ struggles with dental care were not just about the physical pain; it affected their confidence in their own smile, their well-being, and their overall quality of life. I can still remember when my stepdad got his very first teeth cleaning done and the excitement he expressed; it had never occurred to me that they did not have access to dental care because of financial constraints. The reality that my parents and so many others face crises like this for the majority of their lives has fueled my passion to become a dentist and advocate for better access to affordable dental care. Earning a college degree will be the first step in equipping me with the knowledge and skills necessary to make that dream a reality.
My experiences with healthcare, particularly my family’s struggles with access to dental care, deepened my commitment to the common good. I watched my parents struggle with untreated dental issues due to financial constraints, affecting their health. This injustice sparked my passion for dentistry and gave me a goal to strive for, which is to use my future career in healthcare to ensure that no one is left behind due to financial barriers. I want to provide quality dental care for everyone, regardless of their background, so they don’t have to endure the physical and emotional pain of neglect.
Beyond my career aspirations, earning a degree holds an even deeper significance for me. It is proof that my parents’ sacrifices were not in vain. They worked tirelessly to give me opportunities they never had, and I want to make the most of every opportunity. Neither of my parents had the chance to pursue higher education, not because they lacked ambition, but because their circumstances didn't allow it but because they had to prioritize survival- putting food on the table, keeping a roof over our heads, and making sure my siblings and I had everything we needed. Going to college means carrying their hopes and dreams with me. It means proving to myself, to them, and to the world that hard work and resilience can break the barriers that have held generations back.
There have been moments of doubt when the weight of expectations felt too heavy and when I wondered if I was capable of achieving anything I had set out to do. But in these moments, I remind myself why I started. I think about my parents' struggles, their unwavering support, and the future I want to create. I think about the people who, like my parents, have had to put their health and well-being last because they simply couldn't afford otherwise. My degree is not just for me- it is for them.
I am honored to have had an incredible mother and stepfather who have constantly guided me toward success; their unwavering support has fueled me to pursue higher education. Throughout high school, my mother always encouraged me to pursue extracurriculars and academia that would benefit me in college; because of her encouragement, I became the National Honor Society historian at my school and the secretary for the Sr. Beta club as well. I was also given the opportunity to enroll in dual credit classes at Bellarmine University throughout my sophomore, junior, and senior years.
Through balancing academics, work, and caregiving for my younger sibling, I’ve learned the value of perseverance, time management, and empathy. These values have reinforced my commitment to improving healthcare access in my community. I also see the common good as personal acts of kindness and advocating for systemic change—ensuring that anyone, especially the underserved, has access to the care they need. I plan to carry these values with me into my studies at the University of Louisville, where I hope to contribute my experiences of resilience and advocacy to those who need it most.
As I step into this next chapter of my life, I am determined to make every moment count. College will be a place where I not only gain academic knowledge but also grow as a person. I want to surround myself with like-minded individuals, join pre-dental societies, volunteer at free clinics, and immerse myself in research that can contribute to meaningful change. I want to use my education to make a tangible difference in people's lives. With this scholarship I can make my dreams a reality, I can work less hours and instead put my time into outreach programs and advocating for my community. I would also have more time to join societies in my college that focus on advocacy for those with lack of access to healthcare.
Earring a college degree is more than an academic achievement to me; it is a symbol of resilience, a testament to my family's sacrifices, and a promise to myself that I will work to create a better future; for me, for my family, and for those who deserve a brighter smile and a healthier life.
