The first time I walked into a classroom in the United States, I felt like I had lost my voice. I brought my dreams with me, but not the language to express them. I found myself not being able to understand anything being said and was often left feeling frozen, not knowing what to do. When I would make an effort to speak in English, my classmates would laugh at me, and I'd end up feeling embarrassed by my accent. Everyone else spoke quickly and easily, while I struggled to catch a few words to piece together what was going on. I am a first-generation Hispanic student from a low-income household who came to the United States without English. From my very first weeks in school, I realized I wasn't just learning new subjects, I was learning an entirely new language, culture, and way of life. While all my other classmates spoke fluently, I struggled to understand simple instructions and express myself. School felt overwhelming, but I tried to see it as a challenge to help me grow. My family made enormous sacrifices to give me a better life and give me new opportunities. Education was always seen as important in my home, but at the same time, it was a bit unfamiliar. No one in my family could show me how to apply to college or what to expect, so every step I take, although it may be intimidating, makes me keep on going because I know I'm walking toward a future they never had. Not knowing English followed me everywhere, not just in school. In class, I was afraid to raise my hand or to even get called on, because I worried my accent would give me away. Every word felt like a risk. I remember practicing sentences in my head before I ever said them out loud. Even at home, when I tried to practice, my own cousins would laugh at the way I pronounced words, making me feel small for trying in the first place. Some nights, I would just stare into the dark, wondering if I would ever learn how to speak English fluently. It wasn't any better outside of school; strangers would ask me if I even spoke English, as if I didn't belong here. It made me feel like I had to prove myself. That pressure followed me into the classroom, making it harder to focus and believe in myself. I started to feel alone, not just because I was learning a new language but because individuals around me didn't have patience for it. I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and made the decision: not let a simple language barrier or people get in the way of my learning. I began to watch a lot of movies in English with subtitles in Spanish and studied harder to master the language. Mistakes were definitely made along the way, but I surely did not let that happen. I continued to push forward even when it was uncomfortable. Slowly, i beahn to improve and gained my confidence back. I learned that my accent is not a weakness; it's proof of where I come from and how far I've come. I am proud to be bilingual and to represent people who often feel unseen. As a first-generation student, I aim to succeed not just for myself, but for my parents and for my future. Because I don't have the financial means to pay for tuition on my own, this scholarship would truly make it possible for me to continue my education without constant financial stress.

When I was a sophomore in High School, I would always notice a group of students walking together with two teachers on each side, and I always wondered who they were since I would always see them during my recess hour. Some of my old friends would often laugh at them, and I would not understand why. It wasn't until later that I found out those kids were a part of the Special Education program. I talked to my friends and told them how immature and ignorant they were by making fun of other individuals. Special education teachers matter because they provide crucial support for students with disabilities. Becoming a special education teacher aligns with my values compassio, patience, and inclusion. I believe in helping every student feel supported and capable of growth, regardless of their circumstances. I am passionate about special education because it allows me to support students with diverse needs and help them grow academically, emotionally, and reach their full potential. Working with students who have autism, Down syndrome, or learning differences also allows me to build a positive and inclusive environment for every young mind. Providing individualized instruction ensures that each student receives the support they need to succeed and grow with confidence at their own pace. I value creating structured routines because it provides consistency and help students feel secure. Using creative teaching strategies helps me create lesson plans in engaging ways that meet different learning styles. Having taken education-focused classes has reinforced my understanding of students' needs and their challenges. I am truly committed to continue learning in order to grow as a special education teacher. Often, students with special needs are overlooked and underestimated; therefore, some students may struggle with self-expression or communication due to what they have experienced. I believe a lack of presence can impact their willingness to engage academically, affecting their learning. It is very important for students to develop a sense of identity. To be seen and respected by adults implements a role of positive reinforcement and support that helps build self-worth from within. Students who feel more confident in their own skin are more open to learning. Feeling safe and motivated encourages students to stay motivated and involved in class activities. Feeling recognized and valued supports meaningful academic progress. I will create a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and most importantly, respected. I can only hope that when my students have the chance to feel emotionally secure, they are willing to take more risks and express themselves. I aim to create individualized learning plans that meet each student's unique strengths and challenges. Personalized instruction helps students comprehend their abilities and brings them closer to success. I will encourage students to build independence by providing opportunities to make choices and take initiative. I will guide studentsin developing the skills to communicate their needs and advocate for themselves. I will happily celebrate every milestone earned through effort and growth rather than perfection. Lastly, my passion for special education guides me to support students in realizing their full potential. I am committed to fostering student growth through patience, empathy, and innovative teaching approaches.
