Growing up, I used to think school was pointless. Like many kids, I didn't understand why I had to spend hours every day sitting in class, completing assignments, and repeating the same routine week after week. Looking back now, I realize that school was never just about academics. It was about the people who believed in me when I couldn't believe in myself. One person reached out a hand when I needed it most, and because of that, my life changed forever. That experience inspired me to dedicate my future to helping others in the same way I was helped. Throughout my childhood, my life was anything but stable. I experienced homelessness, lived in run-down houses, and moved between different living situations. Even when things appeared normal from the outside, they were far from it. By the time I reached eighth grade, I felt completely overwhelmed. Every day felt the same: wake up, go to school, put on a smile, come home, finish homework, and repeat the cycle. I felt like I was slowly losing myself, and I struggled to see a future that was any different. Near the end of my eighth-grade year, everything changed. A staff member approached me and encouraged me to join the leadership class. At first, I was terrified. I remember standing in front of one of my teachers, crying because I was so nervous to ask for a letter of recommendation. I never imagined I was capable of being a leader. Looking back four years later, I can hardly recognize that scared student. Today, I am entering my senior year as my school's student body president. I have planned original school events while continuing traditions that bring our community together. I have spoken in front of hundreds of people, and most importantly, I have become someone my peers trust and look up to when they need encouragement or guidance. All of this became possible because one person noticed I was struggling and chose to believe in me. That simple act of kindness completely changed the direction of my life. It showed me the incredible impact one person can have simply by offering support and believing in someone who cannot yet believe in themselves. I will always be grateful for the teachers, staff, and mentors who surrounded me with encouragement and reminded me that my circumstances did not define my future. Although I have accomplished more than I ever thought possible, I know my journey is far from over. As a first-generation college student, I understand that earning a degree will come with challenges. However, the obstacles I have already overcome have taught me resilience, determination, and the importance of asking for help when I need it. Those lessons have prepared me for whatever comes next. In the future, I hope to become a NICU nurse. To me, this career is about so much more than medicine. It is about being present for families during some of the most emotional and uncertain moments of their lives. I want to provide comfort, hope, and compassion when parents feel overwhelmed or afraid. I know what it feels like to be drowning and to have someone reach out a hand. Because someone once did that for me, I want to spend the rest of my life doing the same for others. If I can be even half the person my teachers and mentors were for me, I will know I have made a meaningful difference in someone's life.
