    Mikey Taylor Memorial Scholarship
As a first-generation college student and single mother, my journey has been shaped by perseverance, resilience, and overcoming mental health challenges. Growing up in a low-income household, I often felt the weight of responsibility on my shoulders. My mother, who didn’t speak English, worked tirelessly to support my sister and me. We solely had to be responsible with our homework and were unable to ask for help because my mother would not understand how to read English. I was lucky enough to have great and aprochable teachers. While her strength inspired me, the pressures of navigating life as a translator, advocate, and caregiver at a young age left me feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about my future. In my early twenties, I began to experience anxiety and depression, exacerbated by personal struggles from domestic abuse and the challenge of balancing work and motherhood. For a long time, I hesitated to seek help, fearing judgment and misunderstanding. However, I eventually realized that I couldn’t carry the burden alone. Seeking therapy and the courage to leave was a pivotal decision that changed my life. It taught me that mental health is just as important as physical health and that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. These experiences have profoundly influenced my personal and professional life. As a medical assistant, I’ve worked in various specialties, including family practice, internal medicine, and fertility. I’ve seen firsthand how mental health challenges affect patients, particularly those in underserved communities. My own journey has given me greater empathy and the ability to connect with patients on a deeper level. I’ve learned to create safe, judgment-free spaces where people feel heard and supported. My mental health struggles have also shaped my approach to parenting. I’m intentional about teaching my child emotional intelligence, resilience, and the importance of self-care. I want him to grow up in a home where emotions are validated and challenges are met with compassion. Pursuing a nursing degree has been both a dream and a challenge, but my mental health journey has given me the determination to push forward. I plan to specialize in community health, advocating for accessible mental health resources for DV survivors, low-income and minority families. By using my experiences to help others, I hope to break the stigma around mental health and ensure that no one feels alone in their struggles. The Mikey Taylor Memorial Scholarship would help me continue my education and empower me to create meaningful change in my community. By supporting me, you would also be supporting countless others who will benefit from the work I plan to do as a nurse and mental health advocate.
Robert F. Lawson Fund for Careers that Care
My name is Cindy, and I am a single mother, and a nursing student working tirelessly to build a better future for my son and myself. Growing up in a low-income household, I witnessed firsthand the struggles of accessing basic healthcare, education, and resources. My mom, who raised my sister and me on her own without knowing English, taught me the value of resilience, hard work, and compassion. Her determination inspires me every day to persevere and give back to the community that shaped me. I have worked as a medical assistant for over ten years, gaining experience in internal medicine, family practice, fertility, and urology. During this time, I realized that healthcare is not just about treating illnesses but about addressing the systemic barriers that prevent people from accessing care. This understanding solidified my desire to become a nurse—a role that would allow me to combine my medical expertise with my passion for helping others. I am pursuing this career not just to provide excellent care, but to be an advocate for underserved communities, particularly low-income and minority populations. My career aspirations extend beyond patient care. I hope to one day work in public health, focusing on programs that address health disparities. Having volunteered with organizations that focuses on woman’s care, mental health, and low-income families, I know how vital it is to create inclusive, accessible healthcare systems. I want to work on initiatives that promote preventive care, educate communities on managing chronic conditions, and empower individuals to take charge of their health. Additionally, I am deeply committed to mental health advocacy. I have overcome my own mental health challenges and know how isolating and stigmatizing they can be. By sharing my story and supporting others, I hope to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly in communities where it is often overlooked. This scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of my education but also enable me to continue serving as a role model for my son and others who face similar challenges. My journey has been filled with obstacles, but I have never lost sight of my goal: to make a difference in the lives of others. I believe that through kindness, education, and unwavering determination, I can help create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Thank you for considering my application and for supporting future healthcare professionals dedicated to improving our communities.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My name is Cindy, and as a passionate person, I have long dreamed of building a career that intertwines my love for healthcare, my deep cultural roots, and my desire to make a difference in people’s lives. My journey to this point has been shaped by my upbringing in a low-income family, my experiences as a single mother, and my dedication to education despite various challenges. I am currently pursuing a nursing degree while balancing my work as a medical assistant in a male fertility clinic and raising my child. My primary goal is to become a registered nurse (RN) and specialize in cardiology, driven by the significant history of cardiac disease in my father’s side of the family and the lessons learned while working under a cardiology director at Denver Health. My longer-term aim is to contribute to community-based cardiac care initiatives and eventually establish a clinic that provides accessible, culturally competent healthcare services for low-income and underserved populations. Detailed Plan to Achieve My Goals 1. Educational Pathway: To achieve my RN license, I plan to complete my current nursing program with exceptional grades and then apply for a specialized cardiac nursing certification post-graduation. I am currently enrolled in a structured nursing program and plan to take advantage of every academic support offered, including tutoring and peer study groups. The timeline for completion is approximately two years. 2. Financial Strategy: Nursing school tuition, books, and other fees total about $10,000 per semester. To manage this, I rely on scholarships, financial aid, part-time work, and side gigs. I’m working closely with my financial aid advisor, to maximize grants and loan opportunities. Additionally, I plan to save a portion of my earnings as a medical assistant and allocate those funds specifically for school expenses. 3. Budget and Resources: A strict monthly budget helps cover my school expenses, childcare, and household needs. Resources that support my journey include: • Federal and state grants for tuition. • Scholarships focused on my heritage and First generation background . • Employer support for healthcare certifications. • Online courses and workshops in cardiac care. • Local mentorship programs to strengthen my clinical skills. 4. Experience and Networking: My diverse work background at Denver Health, including my time on woman’s care and vaccine management committees, has enriched my knowledge base and professional network. Volunteering during the pandemic and working on projects that provided blood pressure monitors to low-income families has instilled a strong commitment to community health. Overcoming Obstacles and Timing Balancing school, work, and motherhood is challenging, but I’ve developed time management skills to stay on track. I plan to continue working part-time and adjust my schedule to fit my clinical rotations. Ensuring a healthy balance is key, so I prioritize self-care and utilize my supportive network of family and friends. This will help me stay resilient through the rigorous demands of nursing school and eventual board exams. Alternative Paths and Contingencies If circumstances require, I am prepared to extend my timeline by a year to accommodate unexpected situations, such as increased work hours or family obligations. Additionally, I would consider seeking a part-time nursing assistant role in a cardiology department for more direct exposure to my chosen specialty. I am committed to realizing my vision of providing equitable cardiac care, embodying Joe Gilroy’s mantra: “Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan.” This mindset fuels my perseverance and reminds me that careful planning and dedication are the keys to achieving my dreams.
    Bulkthreads.com's "Let's Build Together" Scholarship
As someone pursuing a nursing degree, my vision for the future is deeply rooted in building not just a career, but a bridge between healthcare and community support. I want to build a space where care transcends clinical boundaries and extends to comprehensive community wellness. This ambition stems from my background as a medical assistant for over a decade, during which I have worked in various capacities such as internal medicine, family practice, and male fertility. Each role has taught me that the most impactful care is not only medical but empathetic and holistic. Being raised by a single mother from an indigenous culture, with limited resources and education, has instilled in me the importance of resilience, resourcefulness, and community. Growing up in a low-income environment taught me that healthcare disparities and language barriers are not just obstacles but barriers to trust and wellness. With my first language being Spanish, I am positioned uniquely to connect with communities that are often underserved due to linguistic and cultural gaps. What I want to build is a network that empowers marginalized and bilingual communities by combining my nursing expertise with the skills I have gained in my professional journey and my cultural insight. This would be an initiative where trust is built through language, mutual respect, and understanding, offering workshops that cover basic medical knowledge, preventive health, and wellness management—especially targeting areas like cardiac health, which is significant given my family’s history of heart disease. This vision will make a significant positive impact not only on myself but on my community at large. Personally, it allows me to bridge my heritage and my professional life, making me a better nurse who is aware of the social determinants affecting patients’ health. Professionally, it positions me as an advocate for culturally competent care, an area that I believe is still underrepresented in the healthcare system. I want to extend this approach by creating partnerships with local organizations and clinics to ensure that more people have access to health literacy and support, regardless of their socioeconomic status or background. The goal is to build relationships founded on trust, where healthcare professionals do not merely treat patients but also educate and empower them. By fostering a culture of prevention and wellness, I can create a ripple effect that benefits not just the immediate community but extends to future generations, creating a healthier, more informed, and connected society. In conclusion, my education is more than a career path; it’s a tool that will allow me to construct a foundation where care is both inclusive and proactive. Through this vision, I hope to bridge gaps, foster trust, and build a healthier, more equitable future for my community and beyond.
Organic Formula Shop Single Parent Scholarship
Becoming a single parent has been the most life-altering and humbling experience of my life. From the moment I held my son in my arms, I knew that everything I did from that point forward would be for him. He is my greatest source of inspiration, love, and motivation. Yet, as any single parent knows, raising a child alone while pursuing a higher education comes with its fair share of challenges—financial, emotional, and physical. The decision to go back to school while raising my son as a single mom was not an easy one, but it was a necessary one. I knew that obtaining a degree would be the key to providing a better future for us. I currently work as a medical assistant, a role I’ve held for over 10 years, balancing work with raising my son and now pursuing a nursing degree. Every day is a careful juggle between being the supportive, attentive mom my son needs, fulfilling my job responsibilities, and staying on top of my academic requirements. One of the greatest challenges I face as a single parent and a student is the constant scarcity of time. Mornings start early with preparing breakfast, getting my son ready for school, and then heading to work or class. By the time evening rolls around, homework time turns into bedtime routines, and only then can I turn to my own schoolwork. Late nights and early mornings have become the norm, and sleep is often sacrificed to ensure that I meet deadlines and maintain my grades. There is never enough time to do everything, but I have learned to make the most of the hours I do have. Financial strain is another significant challenge. Without the financial safety net of a partner or extensive family support, every dollar counts. I work part-time to make ends meet, which means managing tuition fees, childcare costs, and daily living expenses is a constant balancing act. Scholarships, like the one offered by Organic Formula Shop, are a lifeline that can make the difference between being able to afford a semester of school or having to put my education on hold. This scholarship would be transformative for my family. It would help cover tuition and school supplies, alleviate some of the financial pressure I face daily, and allow me to focus more on my studies and clinical training without the worry of how to stretch my budget. Beyond time and financial resources, there is also the emotional toll of balancing parenthood with education. There are days when the exhaustion feels insurmountable, and the weight of responsibilities looms heavily. The guilt of not always being present, whether it’s for my son or for my schoolwork, is something I constantly grapple with. But I remind myself that I am setting an example for my son—a lesson in resilience, dedication, and the pursuit of dreams despite obstacles. In the midst of these challenges, there is an incredible sense of purpose. I am pursuing a nursing degree not just to improve our lives financially but to create a better, more secure future where I can be a role model for my son and contribute meaningfully to my community. I want him to see that hard work and perseverance can overcome even the toughest of challenges. Becoming a nurse will allow me to do what I love: caring for people, advocating for patients, and making a difference in the world. Receiving this scholarship would help lift some of the financial burden that comes with being a student and a single mom, allowing me to stay on track toward my degree. It would be an investment not only in my education but in the future of my son and in the patients I will one day serve with compassion and dedication. This opportunity would affirm that, while the journey is hard, it is also worthwhile and achievable with the right support.
    Sarah Eber Child Life Scholarship
Adversity has been a constant presence in my life, shaping who I am and defining my path forward. One of the most pivotal moments came when I became a single mother. Balancing parenthood, work, and the pursuit of higher education was a challenge that tested every aspect of my resilience. I was working as a medical assistant, a role I held for over a decade, and I knew deep down that I wanted to pursue more—more for my son, more for myself, and more for the communities I serve. Yet, the barriers I faced were steep: financial strain, limited time, and the immense emotional toll of raising a child alone while studying and working part-time. The adversity I faced during this period of my life changed my perception of challenges. At first, I viewed it as an overwhelming mountain that I had to climb without any support. I knew that achieving my nursing degree would require sacrifices that went beyond my comfort zone, from late nights studying after putting my son to bed to working on assignments during breaks at work. However, I decided to view each challenge as a stepping stone, a necessary part of my journey toward building a better future. My plan of action was simple but unwavering: take each day as it comes and do my best in every moment. This mindset allowed me to navigate the demands of school, work, and motherhood without feeling perpetually defeated. I created a structured routine that prioritized my son’s needs and carved out designated study times that often extended into the early hours of the morning. Leaning on my values of resilience, dedication, and love for my child, I kept pushing forward. I also sought out community resources, scholarships, and support networks that could ease some of the financial and emotional burdens I faced. This proactive approach helped me see that even in moments of hardship, there are always opportunities for growth and support. This experience not only impacted my perception of life but also solidified my passion for working with children and families. Like Sarah Eber, I know the profound importance of giving back and supporting those who face significant life obstacles. Raising my son while pursuing my education taught me that challenges, no matter how overwhelming, can be faced and overcome with persistence, adaptability, and the right mindset. It reminded me of the power of compassion, both in receiving and giving it, and how meaningful it is to be there for others during their most trying times. Receiving this scholarship would empower me to continue my journey toward becoming a nurse who embodies these lessons—offering comprehensive, compassionate care to children and families, especially those who face adversity similar to what I have experienced. I want to use my experiences and education to provide support and hope to children who feel like the odds are stacked against them, showing them that challenges don’t define them; how they rise to face those challenges does. This scholarship would allow me to carry forward Sarah Eber’s legacy of resilience, care, and the passion for helping children overcome the obstacles they face in life.
    Maria Scholarship
As a single mother and a proud bi woman, my journey through higher education has been shaped by both the unique challenges and strengths of my intersecting identities. Balancing parenthood while pursuing my academic dreams has been a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the profound love I have for my son. Each day, I wake up driven not only by my desire to succeed but by the unwavering commitment to provide him with a life full of opportunities, support, and pride in who we are. The story of Maria resonates deeply with me. Like Maria, I am navigating the challenging yet rewarding path of balancing motherhood with the pursuit of higher education. Her story embodies the values of resilience and sacrifice that I live every day. Maria’s journey of raising three children while still striving for her undergraduate degree mirrors my own life as I juggle the responsibilities of raising my son and studying to achieve my nursing degree. Her example is an inspiring reminder that despite the obstacles, it is possible to pursue your dreams while caring for the people who mean the most to you. Growing up in a low-income, Mexican American household, I faced cultural and societal expectations that sometimes made embracing my identity as a bi woman difficult. There were few role models who reflected my experience, which often left me feeling isolated and misunderstood. However, these experiences fueled my determination to create a life where my son could grow up proud of who we are and where I could be a role model for others in the LGBTQIA+ community. Being part of this community has added complexity to my academic path, but it has also been a source of strength. It has taught me empathy, resilience, and the importance of creating safe spaces where everyone feels seen and valued. The decision to return to school while raising my son alone was not easy. I balance my time between studying for exams, working part-time to support us, and being fully present for my son—nurturing him, helping with homework, and being there for every cherished moment. It is exhausting, yet deeply fulfilling. Each late night spent studying and each early morning rush to get him ready for school is driven by my vision of showing him that it’s never too late to chase your dreams and overcome challenges, no matter how daunting. Receiving this scholarship would be transformative. It would alleviate the financial strain that comes with being both a parent and a student, allowing me to devote more time to my studies and clinical training without the constant worry of making ends meet. It would be an investment not only in my education but also in my ability to become a nurse who champions compassionate, inclusive care for all. Maria’s story embodies the relentless pursuit of education for the betterment of one’s family, and that is the path I walk every day. This scholarship would honor that shared journey and empower me to achieve my dreams, making a positive impact in my community and inspiring my son to believe that perseverance and courage can lead to a brighter future.
Dr. C.L. Gupta Young Scholars Award
I grew up in a low-income, Spanish-speaking household where my mom single-handedly raised my sister and me without knowing English. This experience taught me resilience, determination, and the value of hard work from an early age. I faced the challenge of navigating an educational system that wasn’t built for students from backgrounds like mine. Despite these obstacles, I excelled academically, driven by the desire to create a better life for myself and to make my mom’s sacrifices worthwhile. My academic achievements reflect that determination. In high school, I graduated with high honors and performed well on standardized tests, showcasing my ability to push through adversity. This academic success continued into my professional life, where I became a medical assistant and gained over 10 years of experience across internal medicine, family practice, and fertility clinics. Throughout these years, I continued to educate myself, earning certifications and staying current on medical best practices, all while balancing the responsibilities of work and being a single mom. My career goals have grown alongside my experiences. I am currently pursuing a nursing degree with the goal of becoming a registered nurse, and eventually, a nurse practitioner. I want to provide compassionate, comprehensive care to communities that often feel overlooked or misunderstood. Coming from a background where healthcare access was limited, I have a deep-seated commitment to advocating for patients who face similar struggles. My passion lies not only in treating illnesses but in educating patients and empowering them to take charge of their health. I see myself one day leading initiatives that promote preventive care and health education, ensuring that the next generation has more resources and knowledge at their disposal than my family once did. The financial journey of pursuing this path has been a significant challenge. As a single mom balancing part-time work, parenting, and schooling, every dollar is accounted for, and tuition costs often feel insurmountable. I do not have the safety net of a family that can financially support me, so I rely on scholarships, grants, and loans to make my educational dreams a reality. This scholarship would be an incredible help in alleviating the financial burdens that come with nursing school. It would allow me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of how I will pay for tuition, textbooks, or clinical fees. The relief this scholarship would provide would enable me to dedicate more time and energy to my courses, which in turn, would help me achieve my ultimate goal of becoming a nurse practitioner. Dr. Chaman L. Gupta’s legacy of supporting others resonates deeply with me. I know what it feels like to be held back by circumstances out of my control, but I also know the power of perseverance and discipline. This scholarship would not just be financial assistance—it would be a recognition of my journey and the obstacles I’ve overcome, a reinforcement of my belief that adversity is not the end of the story. With this support, I can continue working toward my goals and contributing positively to society, just as Dr. Gupta envisioned.
    Charles Pulling Sr. Memorial Scholarship
I am a proud non-traditional student who understands deeply the sacrifices and determination it takes to pursue education later in life. I started my journey in the healthcare field over 10 years ago as a medical assistant, working in various roles across internal medicine, family practice, and fertility clinics. While these experiences have given me a strong foundation in patient care and invaluable clinical insight, my ambitions have always extended beyond my current role. What makes me a non-traditional student is my age, my journey, and the numerous responsibilities I juggle while pursuing my education. As a single mother, my motivation to go back to school is deeply rooted in my desire to provide a better life for my son. From the moment I held him in my arms, I knew I wanted to be an example of strength, resilience, and ambition. I wanted him to see that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. My upbringing taught me this firsthand. My mom raised my sister and me on her own, facing countless challenges, including language barriers and financial struggles, but she persevered. Her dedication instilled in me the belief that no matter the obstacle, it is possible to move forward and succeed. I carry her lessons with me as I balance my roles as a mother, a healthcare professional, and a student. What drives me to do more is the vision of a better future, not just for myself, but for my family and the communities I serve. I am committed to advancing my education to become a registered nurse and, ultimately, a nurse practitioner. This path will allow me to expand my scope of practice, make more impactful decisions, and advocate for patients in ways I couldn’t before. Coming from an underrepresented background as a Mexican American and a bi woman, I want to be a voice for those who feel unseen in healthcare settings, ensuring that every patient I interact with feels heard, valued, and empowered. Returning to school while working part-time and raising my son is not without its challenges. Late nights, early mornings, and endless to-do lists are part of my reality, but they are also part of my motivation. The sacrifices I make today are the investments I am putting into a brighter tomorrow. Each class I complete and every skill I learn brings me closer to being the nurse I envision—someone who embodies compassion, skill, and the drive to support others in their journeys to health and wellness. Receiving the Charles Pulling Sr. Scholarship would be more than financial assistance; it would be a testament to the belief that education is the gateway to a better life. It would allow me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial stress of tuition and resources. This support would empower me to continue balancing my responsibilities and pursuing my dream of becoming a nurse who not only provides care but changes lives, continuing the legacy of dedication and resilience that Charles Pulling Sr. exemplified.
    Joseph Joshua Searor Memorial Scholarship
My educational journey is a testament to resilience, dedication, and the pursuit of purpose. I started my career in healthcare as a medical assistant over a decade ago, working in diverse environments including internal medicine, family practice, and fertility clinics. These years gave me invaluable insight into the medical field, shaped my understanding of patient care, and deepened my empathy and ability to connect with patients. Yet, despite the meaningful work I was doing, there was always a sense that I could do more, contribute more, and support my patients in ways that extended beyond the limitations of my role as a medical assistant. The turning point, my “aha” moment, came after I had my son. Becoming a mother changed my perspective in profound ways. I experienced firsthand the power of compassionate, thorough, and attentive nursing care during my medical visits and throughout my pregnancy. The nurses who supported me were more than caregivers; they were advocates, educators, and a source of comfort during a vulnerable time. The level of dedication and genuine care they exhibited left an indelible mark on me. I realized then that I wanted to give others that same level of support and connection, not just as an assistant but as a nurse who could contribute to every aspect of a patient’s well-being. This realization sparked a passion that only grew stronger with time. Working as a medical assistant further reinforced my desire to expand my knowledge and scope of practice. I wanted to be able to make more critical decisions, provide more comprehensive care, and advocate for my patients in a broader capacity. Returning to school was not an easy decision—I am a single mom, balancing work, school, and parenting. But my desire to push forward and grow, fueled by the love for my son and the determination to provide him with a better future, made it clear that pursuing a nursing degree was not just a dream, but a necessity. Now, I am well into my educational journey, working towards becoming a registered nurse, with plans to continue advancing my education even further. This path has come with challenges; navigating schoolwork while maintaining a job and raising a child has required sacrifices, late nights, and unwavering commitment. Yet, it has also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Each course and clinical rotation brings me closer to my goal and solidifies my belief that nursing is where I belong. Receiving the Joseph Joshua Searor Scholarship would mean not only financial relief but validation of the sacrifices I have made to pursue this calling. It would empower me to focus more on my studies and future clinical training, allowing me to grow into the type of nurse who embodies Joseph’s legacy of courage, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence in nursing. This scholarship would help me advance toward my ultimate goal: becoming a nurse who provides compassionate, knowledgeable, and comprehensive care to patients, mirroring the care that inspired me and carrying forward the passion Joseph exemplified in his own life.
Carol B. Warren, You are Loved Scholarship
I am a proud non-traditional student navigating the path to higher education while balancing numerous responsibilities. As a single mother, I have taken on the roles of caregiver, provider, and student all at once. My journey has been defined by resilience, perseverance, and a deep-seated desire to build a better future not just for myself, but for my son and my family. I come from a background where opportunities were often limited; my mother raised my sister and me on her own, without knowing English, teaching us to be resourceful and determined in the face of challenges. Her sacrifices, strength, and relentless spirit became the foundation for my own pursuit of lifelong learning. My educational journey began as a medical assistant, a role I have held for over a decade in various fields including internal medicine, family practice, and fertility clinics. While I am grateful for the experiences and knowledge gained, I knew that my passion for helping others required more. This led me to return to school to pursue a nursing degree. It hasn’t been an easy path—balancing my job, academic work, and parenting has tested my limits, but it has also reinforced my dedication to this goal. Receiving the Carol B. Warren Scholarship would be a transformative moment for me. It would provide financial relief, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on the worries that come with paying for tuition, textbooks, and other school-related expenses. This scholarship would be an investment not just in my education, but in my potential to give back to the community as a nurse who understands firsthand the challenges faced by underrepresented and underprivileged populations. I aim to serve as a bridge for those who feel unseen or misunderstood in the healthcare system, ensuring that each patient I encounter feels valued and respected. As someone who has faced and overcome obstacles similar to Carol B. Warren’s journey—losing loved ones and taking on the role of supporter and nurturer—I am inspired by her legacy of lifelong learning. Her story resonates with me deeply because it embodies the idea that education is a journey, not a race, and that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. This scholarship would not only honor her legacy but would also allow me to become a source of inspiration for my son and others in my community, proving that with determination and support, achieving your goals is possible at any stage of life.
    Sheila A Burke Memorial Scholarship
My vision for myself as a future nurse is grounded in compassion, advocacy, and empowerment. I see my career not only as a means to provide essential healthcare but as a platform to connect with patients and their families in a way that makes them feel heard, respected, and genuinely cared for. Coming from a low-income, Spanish-speaking family, I have seen firsthand how difficult it is for people in underrepresented communities to access quality healthcare. These experiences have instilled in me an unwavering commitment to become the type of nurse who breaks down barriers, making healthcare accessible and inclusive for all. As a Mexican American, I understand the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups, especially when seeking medical care. My vision is to bring this understanding into practice by fostering a supportive environment where patients feel safe and understood. I aim to specialize in areas that not only align with my professional experiences but also reflect the needs I’ve witnessed, such as cardiology, given my family’s history with cardiac disease. I want to become an advocate for preventative care and community health education, empowering individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to take charge of their health. Beyond clinical practice, my goal is to mentor and uplift other aspiring nurses, especially those who, like me, come from underprivileged or underrepresented backgrounds. Having navigated challenges related to financial constraints, limited resources, and cultural nuances, I want to inspire future nurses to persist in the face of adversity. I would like to create programs and workshops focused on professional growth, health education, and cultural competency. By doing so, I hope to extend the legacy of Sheila A Burke, promoting nursing excellence through continued education and community involvement. My volunteer work, including helping low-income families with medical resources and participating in community outreach, has deepened my resolve to be more than a nurse—I want to be a beacon of hope and a source of strength for those who need it most. The scholarship funds would support my journey by alleviating financial burdens, allowing me to focus on my studies and participate in hands-on training and educational opportunities that will shape me into the nurse I envision. In the future, I see myself leading by example—bridging the gap between medical practice and compassionate care, working in tandem with diverse teams, and contributing to a healthcare environment where every patient feels valued. My hope is to honor Sheila’s legacy by being an unwavering force for positivity, growth, and transformative care in the nursing field.

My name is Cindy, a proud Mexican American woman who grew up in a low-income, Spanish-speaking household, facing numerous challenges that shaped who I am today. I come from an indigenous culture that emphasizes resilience, community, and deep-rooted connections. I am currently a medical assistant pursuing a nursing degree, driven by my passion for healthcare and making a tangible impact on people’s lives. With over 10 years of experience in internal medicine, family practice, and fertility clinics, my career has been built on dedication, empathy, and understanding. Beyond my professional life, I have been actively involved in volunteer work, whether it was helping low-income families access essential resources or participating in community outreach through Denver Health, where I worked on initiatives such as supporting the LGBTQIA+ community and educating people about health management. My biggest passion is to create safe, inclusive spaces where people feel seen and valued, much like the legacy Coco Chanel left behind. My upbringing and experiences have fostered a profound empathy for individuals facing barriers related to language, identity, or socioeconomic status. As a Bi individual, I know firsthand the significance of representation and the power of belonging. This has fueled my desire to advocate for people who have historically been marginalized, particularly within healthcare. I have learned to navigate a world that often overlooks or misunderstands LGBTQIA+ individuals, and that has strengthened my determination to bridge these gaps in my community. Coco’s story resonates with me on a deeply personal level. Like her, I believe that empowering others to feel important and supported can create ripples of positive change. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to continue my education and move closer to becoming a registered nurse, specializing in areas such as cardiology, where I can use my clinical skills and life experiences to uplift those around me. With this support, I plan to spearhead initiatives aimed at expanding safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals within healthcare settings, ensuring they receive compassionate, competent care without judgment or prejudice. The scholarship funds would be used to cover tuition costs, support materials for my studies, and allow me to dedicate time to developing community outreach programs, such as workshops on health management for marginalized groups. I also envision using my position as a nurse to collaborate with organizations focused on mental health support and education, reinforcing the importance of holistic well-being. My journey as a bi woman has taught me that resilience and passion are powerful tools. With this scholarship, I would continue Coco’s legacy by advocating for inclusivity, inspiring hope, and making sure every individual I work with feels seen, valued, and supported.

My career goals are deeply rooted in my passion for healthcare and my desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. With over a decade of experience as a medical assistant, working in diverse settings such as internal medicine, fertility, family practice, and a urology clinic, I’ve cultivated a strong foundation in patient care and clinical skills. Now, as I pursue my nursing degree, my aspiration is to become a registered nurse and eventually specialize in an area that aligns with my strengths, such as cardiology, where I already have experience and a personal connection due to my family’s history of cardiac disease. My professional aspirations extend beyond clinical practice. I want to serve as a mentor and advocate, supporting patients not just physically but emotionally, and educating communities about health management and prevention. Growing up in a low-income, Spanish-speaking household, I witnessed firsthand the barriers that people face when accessing quality healthcare and navigating complex medical systems. This upbringing instilled in me a drive to work towards bridging these gaps, ensuring that patients from all backgrounds feel heard, respected, and empowered. In addition to my clinical ambitions, I am dedicated to fostering mental health awareness and promoting community health outreach. My volunteer work at Denver Health, where I collaborated on projects to help low-income families and supported the LGBTQ community, has fueled my desire to expand these efforts on a larger scale. I aim to leverage my practical experience, cultural understanding, and commitment to caregiving to create an environment where patients feel truly cared for, understood, and supported. Ultimately, my goal is to blend hands-on care with advocacy to uplift communities and inspire trust and wellness in every patient interaction.

Community service, to me, is about extending beyond oneself to uplift others and address collective needs. It is a commitment to putting empathy into action, bridging gaps in care, education, and support to foster a sense of belonging and mutual empowerment. Growing up in a low-income family where resources were limited, I witnessed firsthand the challenges that arise from lack of access and support. Community service, therefore, isn’t just an act of giving but a responsibility to create spaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background. My experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of community involvement. At Denver Health, I took part in volunteer initiatives that expanded my understanding of what true community service entails. From cleaning up downtown after the George Floyd movement to collaborating with the DHA to teach low-income families how to use blood pressure monitors, each act was more than a task—it was a testament to the power of coming together to support one another. I was also involved with the LGBTQ committee, working to ensure that marginalized voices were heard and supported, and I took pride in planning family events and organizing team efforts that fostered unity and inclusivity. As I continue my journey in the healthcare field, I plan to give back to my community by being more than just a provider; I want to be a resource and advocate. As a nurse, my goal is to approach each patient holistically, addressing not only their immediate health concerns but also recognizing the environmental, cultural, and social factors that impact their well-being. Drawing from my own background and the stories of those I’ve cared for, I plan to bridge the gap between clinical care and genuine human connection. My aim is to work in a field of healthcare where I can make a profound difference, focusing on both physical and emotional well-being, which has given me insight into how preventative care and education can change lives. Ultimately, I hope to combine my background as a medical assistant, my nursing education, and my innate ability to read people’s energies to support patients through their health journeys and empower them with the knowledge to advocate for their well-bein I aspire to create educational programs focused on preventative care, especially related to heart health, considering the history of cardiac disease in my father’s side of the family. These programs would empower patients with knowledge and equip them with tools to maintain their health proactively. My dream is also to collaborate with community organizations to ensure that low-income and minority populations receive quality healthcare, support, and advocacy. In essence, community service means nurturing the roots of connection, compassion, and mutual respect. Through my career, I will continue to invest in my community by fostering trust, promoting education, and advocating for equitable healthcare for all.

My name is Cindy, and I’m a proud Mexican American woman who grew up in a low-income, single-parent household. My mom raised my sister and me, navigating life without knowing English, which showed me firsthand the power of resilience and sacrifice. My journey has always been fueled by a passion for helping others, which led me to become a medical assistant more than 10 years ago. During my career, I’ve worked in internal medicine, family practice, and male fertility, including at Denver Health, where I was involved with the LGBTQ committee and the vaccine management committee. My experiences there opened my eyes to the importance of inclusive healthcare and understanding the needs of diverse communities. I also contributed through volunteer efforts, such as aiding low-income families in learning how to use blood pressure monitors and collaborating with the DHA. My most meaningful work, however, came in the moments when I supported patients through the most vulnerable stages of their lives. One of my most impactful memories is caring for a regular patient who came in every month and whose strength inspired me until her passing during the pandemic. It was experiences like these that deepened my commitment to a future in healthcare. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in nursing, driven by a purpose that intertwines my love for helping others and my own lived experiences. I believe being a nurse will enable me to offer not just medical expertise, but a unique understanding that comes from a place of compassion, rooted in shared struggles. The empathy I developed through personal challenges, such as growing up with limited resources and experiencing loss within my family, has strengthened my resolve to provide holistic care. Additionally, coming from an indigenous culture has given me a deep respect for the significance of traditions and cultural practices in the healing process. My aim is to work in a field of healthcare where I can make a profound difference, focusing on both physical and emotional well-being. I am particularly drawn to cardiac nursing due to the history of cardiac disease in my father’s side of the family, which has given me insight into how preventative care and education can change lives. Ultimately, I hope to combine my background as a medical assistant, my nursing education, and my innate ability to read people’s energies to support patients through their health journeys and empower them with the knowledge to advocate for their well-being.

Essay: Making an Impact Through Service My name is Cindy, and I am a proud Mexican woman who comes from an indigenous background. I grew up in a low-income household, where my mother raised me and my sister on her own without knowing English. Life was not always easy, but it was filled with love, resilience, and a strong sense of community. These values have shaped who I am today and are the reason I am passionate about helping others. I am currently pursuing a nursing degree, a path that perfectly aligns with my desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. My journey as a medical assistant for over ten years has taught me that true fulfillment comes from serving others, especially in moments of vulnerability. One of the most profound experiences where I made a positive impact on my community was during my time at Denver Health. I was not only a part of the clinical staff but also served on the LGBTQ committee and the vaccine management committee. I was proud to contribute to an inclusive environment and help ensure that patients received equitable care. However, one of the projects that touched me the most was collaborating with the Denver Housing Authority (DHA) to help low-income families gain access to blood pressure monitors and teaching them how to use these devices effectively. Many families we worked with had limited resources and little knowledge about managing chronic conditions. It was heartening to see the relief on their faces when they realized that someone cared enough to provide them with the tools and knowledge they needed for better health. One interaction that stays with me is a mother who expressed how empowered she felt after learning to monitor her husband’s blood pressure at home. She told me that it gave her peace of mind and confidence in caring for her family. That moment, and many others like it, reinforced my belief that service is more than just providing medical care; it is about empowering individuals and making them feel seen and valued. It is these experiences that motivate me to keep moving forward with my nursing degree, so I can continue to contribute to my community on an even greater scale. My background and the challenges I’ve faced have taught me to lead with empathy and passion. Serving others isn’t just something I do; it’s a core part of who I am.

Being a first-generation, Mexican-American college student is more than just a milestone; it’s a testament to the sacrifices, resilience, and dreams of my family. Growing up, I watched my mom, who raised me and my sister on her own, work tirelessly to provide for us without knowing English. Every day, she pushed forward despite countless challenges, and it was her strength and dedication that showed me what it truly means to fight for a better future. My journey to become a college graduate is my way of honoring her sacrifices and making sure her efforts were not in vain. My passion for education is deeply rooted in my family’s story. Coming from a low-income background where opportunities were limited, I learned to value even the smallest achievements. I saw how hard my mom worked to make sure we had what we needed and how she always believed that education could break the cycle of struggle. This belief became my motivation. I want to prove to myself and my family that we can rise above the barriers we’ve faced, that my heritage and background don’t hold me back but propel me forward. Being a Mexican-American in higher education isn’t just about earning a degree; it’s about creating a path where there wasn’t one before. It means showing my younger family members and those in my community that they, too, can dream bigger and reach higher. It’s about turning the sacrifices of the generations before me into stepping stones for the future. Every time I study late into the night or push myself through challenges, I remember that this is not just for me—it’s for the countless others who didn’t have this opportunity and for those who are watching and need someone to show them it’s possible. Balancing school, work, and being a single mom has not been easy. There have been moments when I’ve questioned whether I could keep going. But then I think of my mom’s unwavering determination, and I feel a renewed sense of purpose. My journey as a first-generation college student is about more than personal achievement; it’s about resilience, community, and the legacy I want to leave for my son. I am passionate about being a first-generation, Mexican-American college graduate because it embodies the power of hope and hard work. It represents not just my dreams but the dreams of my ancestors who laid the foundation and the future I’m building for my son and generations to come.

My name is Cindy, and I am a Mexican woman with deep roots in an indigenous culture from Mexico. Growing up, my world was rich with stories, traditions, and a strong sense of community. My Hispanic family background has profoundly shaped who I am and how I perceive the world around me. Raised by a single mother who had to navigate the challenges of a new country without speaking English, I witnessed firsthand what resilience, strength, and determination look like. My mother’s unwavering dedication to providing for me and my sister, even in the face of significant obstacles, taught me that perseverance and hard work can light the path forward even when things seem uncertain. Our home was filled with love, even when resources were scarce. Family gatherings were vibrant and full of life, reminding me that joy isn’t found in material wealth but in shared moments and support. These values of connection, empathy, and loyalty became the lens through which I view the world. I see the importance of looking out for one another, lending a hand where it’s needed, and finding strength in togetherness. Growing up in a low-income family and being surrounded by people who, despite their own challenges, always managed to share what little they had, taught me to lead with kindness and to be proactive in helping others. My background has given me a heightened sensitivity to the struggles people face, especially those who are marginalized or underrepresented. It has fueled my desire to contribute positively to my community and become a source of support for others. This perspective has influenced my professional path; I became a medical assistant over a decade ago, driven by a passion to make healthcare accessible and compassionate. I wanted to be the person who listens, who understands, and who treats every patient with the dignity and empathy they deserve. Being Hispanic also means carrying a blend of humility and pride—knowing when to step back and when to stand up for what is right. It means celebrating my roots while using the strength of my heritage to push forward and create change. I carry my identity with me in everything I do, whether it’s helping patients feel heard, supporting my family, or volunteering to make a difference. My heritage is a gift that has taught me the value of community, resilience, and the power of standing together. It’s these lessons that guide me as I strive to be a force for good in the world.
    Expression in Medicine Scholarship
Free expression is crucial in medicine because it builds trust, sparks innovation, and enhances patient care. In a field that relies on teamwork and continuous learning, being able to communicate openly without fear is what drives real progress. Medicine moves forward when people feel safe to share their insights, challenge the norm, and speak up for patients. Every idea, whether big or small, adds to a collective pool of knowledge that can improve outcomes and change lives. As a medical assistant with experience in internal medicine, family practice, and fertility clinics, I have seen firsthand how vital open communication is. There have been moments when speaking up or encouraging input from others led to better patient outcomes or early detection of an issue. It’s these everyday interactions that prove how free expression directly impacts patient care. It doesn’t matter where an idea comes from; if everyone feels valued enough to speak up, the entire team benefits—and so do the patients. To protect and promote free expression, the medical field needs to create and support a culture that values every voice. This starts with leadership. Doctors, managers, and senior staff need to lead by example, showing that every question and idea is worth consideration. Fostering an environment where open dialogue is the norm helps everyone feel they belong and are part of something meaningful. Training on how to communicate respectfully and effectively is also important, as it makes difficult conversations constructive and helps avoid misunderstandings. Protecting individuals who voice concerns is another vital step. People shouldn’t have to worry about facing negative consequences for speaking up about patient safety or ethical concerns. Having clear policies that safeguard whistleblowers and encourage transparency reinforces the idea that every concern is taken seriously and is part of providing high-quality care. Lastly, creating space for feedback and dialogue within teams strengthens trust and shows that every perspective counts. Simple practices like encouraging input from nurses, medical assistants, and technicians during case discussions can lead to more comprehensive care plans. Free expression is not just a nice-to-have; it’s the foundation for growth, ethics, and compassionate care in medicine. Supporting this ideal means building a culture where every person is heard, where collaboration thrives, and where everyone feels empowered to do their best work.

My journey began over a decade ago when I became a medical assistant. Since then, I have dedicated myself to working in diverse medical settings, from internal medicine and family practice to male fertility clinics. Each role brought its unique challenges and required a refined set of skills, which I embraced as opportunities to grow and enhance my abilities. The empathy and insight I gained through each patient interaction were invaluable, fueling my drive to create a safe, supportive space for them. I believe that being able to connect on a personal level, especially with those who feel vulnerable or overlooked, is essential to providing holistic care. My passion for helping others also extended beyond my clinical responsibilities. During my time at Denver Health, I participated in various volunteer projects that aligned with my mission to support people from all walks of life. I served on the LGBTQ committee, advocating for inclusive healthcare practices, and worked with the vaccine management committee to ensure efficient and fair distribution during a time of great need. One of my most rewarding projects was collaborating with the DHA to assist low-income families in accessing blood pressure monitors and teaching them how to use them. Knowing that this small act could prevent severe health issues and empower families to take charge of their well-being gave me a profound sense of purpose. A moment that solidified my commitment to making a difference came during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of my regular patients, whom I cared for monthly, passed away. Her strength and perseverance had left a lasting impression on me, and her passing was a poignant reminder of why I chose this career—to be a source of comfort and unwavering support, no matter the circumstances. It’s not just in my professional life where I strive to lift others up. My ability to organize and plan events has allowed me to bring people together, whether for family celebrations or work functions. I find joy in creating environments where people feel seen, appreciated, and united. In these moments, I realize that my skill in understanding people, sensing their energy, and knowing how to approach them with empathy is what makes me effective at fostering connection and trust. My passion has also led me to pursue further education in nursing. As a single mom and a part-time worker, balancing these commitments is a challenge, but it’s a commitment I wholeheartedly make because I know that education will amplify my capacity to serve others. Nursing isn’t just a career path for me; it’s the evolution of my life’s purpose—being a source of support, empowerment, and inspiration for others. Life has thrown me hurdles, from financial struggles to the heartache of losing loved ones, but it has also given me profound lessons in resilience, compassion, and the power of community. I have learned that true purpose is found not just in personal achievements but in uplifting those around you so they can thrive, too. My journey so far has prepared me to face any challenge with hope, empathy, and the drive to help others become the best version of themselves, just as I continue to strive to be my best. Each step I have taken, every experience I have endured, and all the skills I have developed have been driven by one simple belief: that when we support and uplift others, we create a ripple effect of strength and positivity. And that is a legacy I am committed to leaving behind.

I remember a moment in my life when my faith was not just a comfort but a lifeline. Growing up, my family faced significant financial difficulties. My mother, an incredible woman who raised my sister and me single-handedly, did so without knowing English. I was determined to change the course of my family’s life, but the road was anything but easy. The obstacles were many—juggling work, raising my own child as a single mom, and pursuing my nursing degree all at the same time. One challenge that vividly stands out was when I had to balance caring for my son, working at the fertility clinic, and managing a rigorous academic schedule. There were days when exhaustion was so overwhelming that it felt like I was moving through life on autopilot. My mother’s resilience had taught me the importance of perseverance, but it was my faith that anchored me through these turbulent times. There was one particularly difficult semester where I was advised to add a second course to stay on track for my degree. The workload, on top of my job as a medical assistant and responsibilities as a mother, seemed impossible to handle. I felt like I was on the brink of breaking down, and the guilt of not being fully present for my son weighed heavily on my heart. During these moments, my faith became my strongest ally. I took time in the early mornings before the chaos of the day began to connect with my beliefs. I would remind myself that I come from a line of strong, resilient Mexican women who overcame countless struggles, and that I am made of that same strength. I leaned into prayer, seeking not only the strength to push forward but the clarity to see that what I was doing was for a greater purpose—not just for me, but for my son and my family’s future. When I was ready to give up, I would close my eyes, take a deep breath, and remember my mother’s journey—her sacrifice, her faith in life even when she didn’t speak the language or have any financial security. If she could press forward with so little, how could I not do the same with the support and love I have around me? My faith reminded me that I am never alone, that my struggles are temporary, and that they shape me into the compassionate, strong nurse I aspire to become. It became more than just belief; it was the inner voice that reminded me every single day, “You can do this. You were made for this.” Faith turned the seemingly insurmountable into something I could break down into smaller, manageable pieces. It reminded me that even in my toughest moments, I have the power to rise, push forward, and become an example for my son—that with faith, no obstacle is too great to overcome.

Balancing my education with my commitment to my family as a single parent has been both a challenging and transformative journey. As I pursue my degree in nursing, I’m not only working to build a better future for myself but, more importantly, for my child. This scholarship would play a crucial role in helping me achieve that future by easing financial burdens, allowing me to focus on my studies, and providing stability for my family. One of the main ways I plan to balance my responsibilities is by creating a structured routine that prioritizes quality time with my child while ensuring I meet my academic requirements. My child’s well-being and development are my top priorities, and I want to be fully present during our time together. I’ve learned to optimize our daily schedules, from dedicating the early mornings and evenings to family time to setting aside specific hours for studying when my child is either asleep or engaged in their own activities. This approach allows me to maintain a healthy balance, making sure my child feels valued and loved, while also ensuring I don’t fall behind in my coursework. Another essential part of my strategy involves establishing a strong support network. Being a single parent, I know that I can’t do everything on my own, and I’m grateful to have family and friends who support me. They understand the pressures of my academic journey and are willing to step in when needed. Their support allows me the flexibility to attend classes, study for exams, or participate in clinical rotations without constantly worrying about my child’s care. This scholarship would significantly contribute to this network, giving me peace of mind by covering expenses that may otherwise create stress, from childcare to transportation costs. This scholarship is not just financial aid to me—it’s an investment in my future and my family’s future. As a single mother from a low-income background, every dollar counts, and receiving this scholarship would allow me to reduce the number of hours I need to work outside of school. I currently work part-time to support my family, but managing both work and school often feels like an uphill battle. By reducing my work hours, I could devote more time to my studies and participate in opportunities that enrich my learning, such as internships or workshops. Lastly, this scholarship would be a profound acknowledgment of the effort I’ve put into pursuing my degree despite the obstacles. It would symbolize a belief in my potential to make a difference, not only in the lives of future patients as a nurse but also in my child’s life as a role model. Balancing school and family as a single parent isn’t easy, but with the support of this scholarship, I am confident that I can achieve my goals and provide a secure, nurturing environment for my child.

Breast health education is deeply important to me, not only because of its direct relevance to women’s health but also due to a personal connection that has shaped my perspective. Eight years ago, I lost my beloved aunt to breast cancer. Watching her battle with the disease, seeing the impact it had on her and our family, and witnessing the heartbreak that came from losing her instilled in me an enduring commitment to promote breast health awareness and education. Her passing was a painful reminder of the need for proactive health care, especially for women who may lack the knowledge or resources to prioritize their breast health. From my experience as a medical assistant, I have learned that many women do not have adequate access to information about breast health. While there is an increasing focus on breast cancer awareness, especially during specific times of the year, there are still barriers—whether cultural, economic, or educational—that prevent women from receiving essential screenings or from understanding their breast health. I believe that early education, clear information, and accessible resources can make a transformative difference in women’s lives, empowering them to take charge of their health and recognize signs that might otherwise be missed. I come from a Mexican, indigenous background, where discussing health openly can sometimes feel like a cultural taboo. Many women from my community face challenges accessing health services or may not be aware of what services are available to them. They may also feel uncomfortable discussing personal health concerns due to language barriers or lack of understanding of medical systems. By focusing on breast health education, I aim to bridge these gaps, offering knowledge in ways that are culturally sensitive and accessible. For me, breast health education is not just about awareness of diseases like breast cancer; it is about equipping women with the knowledge to understand their bodies better, to recognize changes, and to feel confident in seeking help when needed. This kind of education should be holistic, covering preventive care, self-examinations, understanding family history, and navigating health systems effectively. I want to be part of this journey, not only because it honors my aunt’s memory but because I know firsthand how impactful the right information can be in saving lives. Additionally, as I pursue my nursing degree, my commitment to breast health education grows. I see how education can act as a powerful tool to bring change. When we educate, we create informed patients who become advocates for their own health, passing down knowledge and breaking cycles of silence and fear that can surround health issues. I am committed to making breast health education as accessible as possible, particularly for women in underserved communities like my own. In summary, breast health education is important to me because of its potential to save lives, honor my aunt’s legacy, and empower women, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds, to prioritize their health. With knowledge and awareness, we can create a future where fewer women lose their lives to preventable conditions and where each woman feels empowered to take her health into her own hands.

Working in healthcare, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with individuals from all walks of life. One particular experience that deeply impacted me was working with a transgender patient who regularly came to our clinic. This patient had endured a tremendous amount of hardship, facing discrimination not only in society but also within the healthcare system. I saw firsthand the emotional toll it took on them to constantly advocate for their own right to respectful and equitable care. This experience opened my eyes to the immense gaps in our healthcare system regarding LGBTQIA+ inclusion, especially for transgender individuals, and it sparked a fire within me to actively work toward change. I became motivated to understand more about the challenges facing the LGBTQIA+ community. I joined our clinic’s LGBTQ committee to advocate for changes that could make our space more welcoming and safe. We started by implementing training sessions for staff to educate everyone on proper terminology, pronouns, and the unique health concerns faced by LGBTQIA+ patients. Through this, I learned how small acts of empathy, like respecting someone’s pronouns, can make a significant difference. Yet, I realized there is still so much more work to do in healthcare, where LGBTQIA+ patients often face inadequate support and barriers to essential services. This experience has influenced my future plans in profound ways. Pursuing a degree in nursing, I aim to become a healthcare provider who advocates for inclusive, compassionate care for every patient, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. My long-term goal is to advocate for LGBTQIA+ inclusivity at a systemic level, particularly in healthcare settings that have been slower to adopt inclusive practices. I hope to develop initiatives that ensure all medical staff are trained not only to respect diversity but to treat it as an essential part of delivering quality care. In addition to my professional aspirations, I plan to engage in community outreach and activism focused on LGBTQIA+ awareness. I envision working with organizations that support LGBTQIA+ youth, providing them with safe spaces, resources, and support systems, particularly those that cater to young people who may be navigating complex family dynamics or societal prejudice. I want to ensure they feel seen and valued and have access to resources that affirm their identity and well-being. Through my experiences, I have come to realize that healthcare is not just about treating ailments; it’s about creating a sense of belonging and understanding for everyone who walks through the door. My time with this patient reshaped how I view my role as a future nurse and how crucial it is to push for a healthcare system that is truly inclusive. I am committed to working toward a future where all individuals can receive the compassionate and respectful care they deserve, no matter who they are.

My background connects me to generations of resilience, perseverance, and pride, values that guide me in every step I take. Growing up in a family where our heritage and traditions are celebrated, I learned the importance of honoring our roots and the wisdom passed down through generations. These lessons have made me fiercely determined to succeed, not just for myself, but to honor my ancestors who faced struggles to provide better futures for those who came after them. Education was not always accessible to my family. My mother, for example, raised my sister and me on her own while learning English, which was a challenge she faced with courage. Seeing her determination and sacrifices inspired me to pursue my own goals, despite the obstacles I encountered. As I work toward my nursing degree, I often think about the barriers many indigenous families face when it comes to education. I am determined to overcome these challenges and help create change, not only for myself but for others with similar backgrounds. My cultural heritage has taught me to value community, which is why I chose a career in healthcare. I want to be there for others as a nurse, especially for those from marginalized communities who might not always feel understood in healthcare settings. Knowing that my indigenous ancestors healed through community and holistic practices has influenced my approach to patient care. I aim to combine modern medical knowledge with the compassion and empathy I have learned from my culture, making sure each patient feels seen and respected. My goal is to help bridge gaps in healthcare, especially for underserved communities that may have cultural or language barriers. As I continue my education, my indigenous background fuels my desire to give back to my community and advocate for the kind of care that respects everyone’s unique cultural experiences. This has shaped my long-term goal to not only be a nurse but to become involved in community health programs that address health disparities. My dream is to create a space where cultural understanding is as important as medical skill. This scholarship would help me reach my goals, lightening the financial burden so I can focus on my studies and my mission. I want to show my son that our heritage is not something to overcome but a source of strength that can guide us to achieve our dreams. For me, education is not just about personal success; it’s about honoring my heritage, breaking cycles, and setting an example for the next generation to dream bigger and reach further.
    Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
My ideal bookshelf, inspired by #BookTok, would be filled with a mix of fantasy, romance, thrillers, and deeply emotional reads—the kind of books that capture your attention from the first page and stay with you long after you finish. Each title would be a must-have, not just because of its popularity but because of the way it has impacted readers and brought people together in the #BookTok community. First on my shelf would be A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) by Sarah J. Maas. This series has become an absolute cornerstone of #BookTok, inspiring countless discussions about character development, world-building, and the dynamics of love and power. For many, including myself, ACOTAR introduced the idea that fantasy could blend with romance in a way that’s equally adventurous and emotional. It has inspired fans to connect over theories, create fan art, and celebrate characters who feel as real as friends. This series taught the #BookTok community that fantasy isn’t just an escape; it’s a way to explore deep emotions and complex relationships. Next, I’d include The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This book took #BookTok by storm, resonating with readers for its portrayal of love, sacrifice, and ambition. It’s a reminder that storytelling can explore all facets of life and that every person’s journey has value. The impact of Evelyn Hugo on #BookTok goes beyond its plot—it sparked discussions about LGBTQ+ representation, the importance of acceptance, and the power of resilience. For many readers, this book felt like a mirror, reflecting parts of themselves they hadn’t seen in fiction before. Another essential is It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover. This book isn’t just popular—it’s personal. Hoover’s work has touched countless readers by shedding light on complex issues like domestic abuse and the choices we make for love and safety. Many readers have found strength in It Ends with Us, and #BookTok has become a safe space for people to share their experiences and support one another. The novel’s impact on the community lies in its raw honesty and its reminder that books can help us heal by making us feel seen and understood. For a bit of thrill, The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides would be a must-have on my shelf. This psychological thriller sparked a wave of suspense and curiosity on #BookTok, with readers obsessing over the twist ending. The book brought the community together through shared shock and fascination, reminding everyone that a good thriller can leave you questioning everything and craving more. Finally, I’d add Better Run by Alina May. This novel, with its unique blend of suspense and romance, captures the essence of dark romance in a way that leaves a lasting impact. The #BookTok community has celebrated this book for pushing the boundaries of traditional romance and exploring themes of redemption and self-discovery. Better Run has inspired readers to discuss the complex moralities of love and has fueled a greater appreciation for stories that don’t fit the mold of typical romances. These titles represent the diversity of genres and themes that make #BookTok so dynamic. Each book on my ideal bookshelf would remind me of the way stories bring us together, spark important conversations, and help us see life through new perspectives.
    Kumar Family Scholarship
I am a first-generation college student and a single mom with a deep passion for helping others, a commitment that has guided me into healthcare and fueled my pursuit of a nursing degree. Growing up, my family faced significant challenges. My mother, who raised my sister and me on her own, didn’t know English and struggled with low-income jobs to make ends meet. Her resilience shaped my determination to create a better future not only for myself but also for my son, who I want to grow up knowing that education and hard work can break cycles and open doors. Working as a medical assistant for the past ten years has given me firsthand experience in healthcare. I’ve worked in settings ranging from internal medicine to family practice and fertility clinics. Along the way, I found my true calling in nursing. I love being there for patients during vulnerable times, offering comfort and care when they need it most. In my current role, I support patients through some of the most challenging experiences, and I’m eager to deepen my ability to help by becoming a nurse. But going back to school has been a significant financial challenge, especially as I balance work and being a mom. This scholarship would make a meaningful impact on my education. It would allow me to focus on my studies instead of worrying about how I’ll afford textbooks, tuition, and childcare. With less financial strain, I could take additional courses and complete my degree sooner, putting me on the path to making a larger impact as a nurse. My education isn’t just a personal goal; it’s a way to give back to my community. I want to advocate for patients, particularly those from underserved backgrounds who may feel overlooked or misunderstood. Having grown up with a similar background, I understand the barriers to healthcare that many face, and I want to bridge that gap. In addition to helping me pursue my goals, this scholarship would empower me to be a role model for my son. I want him to see that, regardless of life’s challenges, it’s possible to follow your dreams. I want him to understand that education is a tool for change, and that it can open doors to opportunities and personal growth. Receiving this scholarship would be a powerful reminder that my hard work is recognized and supported. It would lift a weight off my shoulders, allowing me to focus on what truly matters: becoming the best nurse I can be and giving my son the life and future he deserves. My journey hasn’t been easy, but I am proud of the perseverance I’ve shown. With this scholarship, I’ll be able to continue my education, advance my career, and inspire those around me, proving that no matter where you come from, you can create a path to success and make a difference in the lives of others.
    TLau "Love Fiercely" Scholarship
One of my most memorable outdoor experiences was a solo hike I took on a secluded trail in the mountains. I was craving an escape from my daily life, seeking solitude and a chance to connect with nature in a way that felt deeply personal. It was an autumn day, and the trail was covered in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, with crisp air filling my lungs as I took each step further away from the familiar. Being alone on that trail was both exhilarating and intimidating. As I walked, the stillness around me allowed me to tune into my own thoughts, fears, and dreams in a way that I had never done before. There were moments on that trail when I felt a profound sense of vulnerability, especially when I was uncertain of the path ahead or when the terrain grew more challenging. I recall reaching a point where the incline became steep, and I had to decide whether to push forward or turn back. In that moment, I realized that I had a choice – not just on the hike, but in life. I could take the safe, comfortable route or challenge myself, even if it felt difficult. That decision to keep going on the hike became a metaphor for how I wanted to approach life. Reaching the top of that mountain, breathless and with my legs aching, felt like a victory that I had earned. The view was a reward, but even more rewarding was the realization that I was capable of pushing myself beyond my limits. This experience shaped me by teaching me the power of resilience and the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone. Since that hike, I have approached challenges with a mindset that I can handle more than I might initially believe. It’s given me a kind of quiet confidence – a reminder that, just like on that trail, I am capable of navigating the unknown. Whether it’s pursuing my nursing degree, working in healthcare, or being a single mom, I’ve learned that challenges will always come, but facing them head-on is the only way to grow. In my life’s journey, I’ve applied this lesson by reminding myself that every challenge is an opportunity to discover strength I didn’t know I had. My experiences as a medical assistant and nursing student have put this lesson to the test countless times. There are days when the pressure feels overwhelming, especially as I juggle school, work, and family. But I think back to that hike, to the way I kept moving even when the path was steep and uncertain, and I know I can do this. Each difficult situation becomes a new “incline,” reminding me that I have climbed before and can climb again. Ultimately, that hike gave me more than just a memory. It gave me a foundation of resilience that I draw upon regularly. It taught me that there is beauty and reward in persistence, and that even when the journey feels isolating, there is a version of myself waiting at the top who is stronger, more capable, and ready for whatever life brings.
    Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
The technology that really inspires me is telemedicine because of the way it opens up healthcare access to people who might not otherwise get it. I’ve seen how hard it can be for people in rural areas or those without much money to get the medical help they need. Telemedicine changes that by allowing patients to connect with doctors and specialists without needing to travel far or wait for ages for an appointment. Growing up in a low-income family, I know what it’s like to face challenges around healthcare, and I’ve seen similar struggles in the communities I work with. Telemedicine makes things more fair by bringing care directly to people, no matter where they are or what they can afford. I find that so inspiring because it’s a solution that really understands what people need. On a personal level, I’ve seen how much more comfortable people feel when they can talk to a doctor from the privacy of their own home. For patients who might feel anxious or struggle with language barriers, telemedicine can be a way to get the care they need without the stress of being in a busy clinic. What excites me most is the potential telemedicine has to focus more on prevention, catching issues before they become serious problems. For me, this technology is a reminder of how powerful technology can be in making a real difference. It fuels my passion to keep working in healthcare, knowing that tools like telemedicine can help us build a more connected, healthier world where everyone has a fair shot at care.
    Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
My experiences with mental health have shaped who I am today, influencing everything from the way I see the world to my relationships and career goals. Growing up, I faced many obstacles, from financial hardships to the everyday stresses of life. Add to that the stigma that often surrounds mental health issues, and there were times when it felt like I had to carry my struggles alone. But through those hard moments, I developed a belief in resilience and empathy, not just for myself but for everyone who might be facing similar battles in silence. These values have become central to who I am and what I want to achieve in life, especially as I work toward a career in nursing. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is how crucial it is to break the silence around mental health. Coming from a low-income family and being a single mom, I know firsthand how hard it can be to access the resources and support needed for mental health. There’s often a stigma attached, making it difficult to reach out, even to people close to us. This has taught me that mental health isn’t something to be ashamed of or hidden; it’s a part of who we are. It’s helped me believe that every person deserves compassion and understanding, no matter their background or situation. This belief is a big part of my motivation to advocate for mental health awareness in communities like mine, where it’s often overlooked. These experiences have also changed the way I approach my relationships. Going through my own mental health journey has made me more sensitive to what others might be experiencing, even if they don’t say it out loud. I’ve learned to be a better listener and to recognize when someone might need a little extra support, even if it’s just a kind word or a listening ear. It’s taught me that everyone has struggles, and sometimes just being there for someone can make a world of difference. In my friendships, family life, and especially as a mom, I try to keep this perspective in mind. It’s helped me build stronger, more genuine connections because I know how meaningful it is when someone takes the time to understand what you’re going through. My career aspirations have also been shaped by these experiences. Working as a medical assistant in different settings, like internal medicine and fertility, has opened my eyes to how interconnected mental and physical health are. I’ve seen patients struggling with serious health issues, and I know that behind every diagnosis is a person who may be facing fear, uncertainty, or sadness. Watching their resilience in the face of these challenges has inspired me to become more than just a healthcare provider. I want to be a source of comfort and understanding, someone who truly sees the person behind the symptoms. This journey is a big part of why I’m pursuing nursing. I want to make a difference in people’s lives, not only by treating their physical health but by acknowledging and supporting their mental well-being too. I want to be the nurse who listens, who takes the time to understand, and who advocates for her patients, especially those who might feel unseen or unheard. I know that there are people out there, just like me, who are facing mental health struggles in silence, and I want to be someone they can turn to. In the end, my experiences with mental health have been challenging, but they’ve also been transformative. They’ve taught me that there’s strength in vulnerability, value in empathy, and importance in standing up for others. They’ve guided me toward a career where I can help people not only heal but feel heard and valued. My journey with mental health has become a part of who I am, and it’s the driving force behind my passion for nursing and my dedication to making a positive impact on others.
New Generation of Latino Leaders Scholarship
Growing up in a low-income Mexican family, my academic journey has been shaped by the many challenges of being a first-generation college student. My mother raised my sister and me on her own, and she did it all without knowing English. Watching her navigate a new country, facing endless barriers, taught me early on about resilience and hard work. She was determined to give us opportunities she never had, and her strength inspired me to push through my own struggles, no matter how difficult they seemed. My mother’s limited English meant that I had to take on responsibilities early in life—translating for her, navigating school documents, and handling things that many of my peers didn’t have to worry about. Unlike some of my classmates, I couldn’t rely on my parents for help with college applications, financial aid forms, or even homework. I was navigating the world of higher education on my own. There were many moments of uncertainty, where I felt lost or overwhelmed, but I learned to be resourceful and seek out guidance from teachers, counselors, and peers who could help. Financial struggles were another constant part of my journey. Working part-time while studying has been a necessity, not a choice, but it has also taught me discipline and perseverance. Juggling work, school, and family responsibilities isn’t easy, but it has made me appreciate every step forward I’ve been able to take. Despite the financial barriers and lack of academic guidance, I’ve remained determined to earn my degree. My dream is to become a nurse, a profession where I can help others and advocate for my community—especially underserved Latino communities like the one I grew up in. My mom’s experience as an immigrant who worked tirelessly to give us a better life has shaped my goals. I have seen firsthand the healthcare disparities that affect minority and immigrant families, and I want to use my education to make a difference in this area. Becoming a nurse isn’t just about my personal success; it’s about creating change for people like my mom, who faced immense obstacles but never gave up. I also feel a deep responsibility to give back to my community. As a first-generation college student, I understand how overwhelming it can be to navigate higher education without family guidance. I hope that one day, I can mentor other Latino students who face similar challenges, helping them find the support and resources they need to succeed. I want to be someone they can turn to when they feel lost, just as I’ve leaned on others along the way. My journey has been filled with challenges, but every struggle has made me stronger and more determined to achieve my goals. I want to honor the sacrifices my mom made by not only earning my degree but also helping others rise alongside me.
    Wicked Fan Scholarship
“Wicked” has been a source of comfort and inspiration for me during some of the most challenging times in my life. I first encountered the musical when I was searching for a sense of identity, trying to figure out where I belonged. Growing up in a low-income, immigrant family, I often felt out of place or judged for what made me different. Elphaba’s journey, as someone misunderstood and rejected simply because she doesn’t fit the mold, resonated with me deeply. Her story gave me a sense of hope, reminding me that it’s okay to be different, and that those differences are what make us powerful. The relationship between Elphaba and Glinda is another aspect of Wicked that has stayed with me. Their friendship, filled with misunderstandings, growth, and eventually deep love, mirrors some of my own friendships. It’s a reminder that real, lasting friendships don’t come from being the same, but from learning to appreciate and love each other for our differences. The bond between these two women also reminded me of the connections I’ve had with people who’ve come and gone from my life, leaving an impact on me for good—like my late cousin and aunt, whose strength and love I carry with me every day. The music of Wicked is where I find my strength. “Defying Gravity” has become an anthem for me, especially as I’ve faced the unique challenges of being a single mother, balancing work, school, and caring for my child. There have been so many moments where I’ve felt weighed down by responsibilities and doubt, but this song reminds me to rise above, to keep pushing forward, and to believe that I can overcome whatever stands in my way. It’s taught me to trust in my own power and not let the expectations of others define my path. “For Good” is another song that touches me deeply. It’s a bittersweet reminder of how the people we meet shape our lives, even if they don’t stay forever. The line, “because I knew you, I have been changed for good,” makes me think of my cousin and aunt, both of whom I lost too soon. Their love and influence continue to shape me, much like Elphaba’s and Glinda’s bond changed both of them. In so many ways, Wicked has given me the courage to embrace my own journey. It’s taught me the importance of being true to myself, valuing the friendships that shape me, and having the strength to rise above adversity. This scholarship would be a part of that journey, helping me continue to defy the odds and reach for my dreams.
    LeBron James Fan Scholarship
As a fan of LeBron James, my admiration goes far beyond just his basketball skills. Yes, his talent, intelligence, and dominance on the court are undeniable, but what makes me a true fan is the kind of person he is off the court, too. LeBron isn’t just an athlete; he’s a leader, a role model, and someone who consistently uses his platform for good. That’s what truly sets him apart for me. One of the things I respect most about LeBron is his ability to adapt and stay at the top of his game for such a long time. He’s been in the NBA for over two decades, and he’s still playing at an elite level. That kind of consistency takes incredible work ethic and dedication. I’ve watched him evolve from the young kid who took over the league in Cleveland, to the powerhouse leader in Miami, then back to Cleveland where he gave the city its first NBA title, and now with the Lakers. No matter where he’s been, he’s always found a way to adjust his game and lead his teams to success. His ability to perform at the highest level, year after year, is something that’s really inspiring to me. Now, when it comes to the debate about whether LeBron is the greatest basketball player of all time, I think he has a strong case. His versatility is unmatched—he can do it all: score, pass, rebound, defend, and make everyone around him better. He doesn’t just focus on one area of the game; he impacts everything. That’s what makes him such a unique player. But I also understand that the GOAT debate is subjective. For a lot of people, Michael Jordan will always be the greatest, especially because of his six championships and legendary moments. And that’s fair—Jordan is a legend. But for me, LeBron’s greatness goes beyond just rings. It’s about how he’s redefined what it means to be a complete player and leader, both on and off the court. What really makes me a fan, though, is LeBron’s work outside of basketball. From opening the I PROMISE School for underprivileged kids to consistently using his voice to speak out on social justice issues, LeBron shows that he cares about more than just his own success. He’s committed to lifting others up and making a real difference in the world. That’s something I admire deeply. In the end, whether LeBron is the GOAT or not, what matters most to me is the person he is. He’s proven that you can be great in your profession while also being great in how you impact the world around you. That’s why I’m such a fan of LeBron James.
    Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish’s music has a way of cutting through the noise of everyday life and connecting directly with the listener’s emotions, and for me, three of her songs stand out as particularly resonant: “Everything I Wanted,” “Ocean Eyes,” and “Your Power.” These songs have not only captured my attention but have also deeply influenced my thoughts, emotions, and personal growth. “Everything I Wanted” speaks to me on multiple levels. The song delves into the struggles of self-worth and mental health, themes that I relate to from my own experiences. As someone who has navigated personal challenges in my mental health journey, hearing Billie express those feelings of vulnerability and isolation reminds me that I’m not alone. The lyrics talk about a haunting dream where no one seems to care about her struggles, which resonates with the times I’ve felt invisible in my own pain. However, the reassurance that comes through in her relationship with her brother, who is always there for her, mirrors the relationships I’ve built to support my well-being. “Ocean Eyes” is another song that feels like a reflection of my inner world. This song, with its ethereal sound and poignant lyrics, reminds me of the first time I allowed myself to feel vulnerable in love. There’s a sense of falling—both literally and emotionally—that Billie captures in the song. That feeling of being swept away by intense emotions brings me back to a time in my life when I was learning to trust someone and open up, even though it was scary. It speaks to the beauty and fragility of those initial stages of connection, something I experienced in my own relationship. Lastly, “Your Power” resonates with me because it touches on the themes of control, manipulation, and reclaiming one’s voice. In my life, I’ve encountered situations where I felt powerless, whether in relationships or work environments, and this song makes me reflect on how important it is to regain that power. It’s also a reminder of the impact our actions have on others, and it motivates me to approach my own interactions with more compassion and awareness. Billie’s call to accountability, both for herself and for those around her, pushes me to continue advocating for myself and for others who might be going through something similar. Overall, these three songs have become like an emotional compass for me, helping me navigate the complexities of life, love, and personal growth. Billie Eilish’s ability to capture raw, unfiltered emotions in her music is why these songs resonate with me so deeply. They are reminders of my own journey and encourage me to continue moving forward with a sense of understanding and self-compassion.
Kyla Jo Burridge Memorial Scholarship for Brain Cancer Awareness and Support
Brain cancer is a disease that hits close to home for me. While I haven’t experienced it directly, I have seen how cancer can devastate families. I lost my aunt to breast cancer, and that experience opened my eyes to the emotional and physical toll cancer takes on both the patient and their loved ones. Watching my family come together to support her, but also witnessing the helplessness we felt at times, deepened my empathy for those battling cancer. Although my connection is not specifically to brain cancer, these experiences have given me a profound sense of urgency to learn more about different forms of cancer and how I can contribute to raising awareness and supporting those affected. The impact of losing someone to cancer stays with you, and it pushes you to find ways to help others facing similar challenges. While I have not yet had direct involvement with brain cancer advocacy, I’ve been engaged in community outreach in other areas of healthcare. At Denver Health, I participated in programs aimed at supporting marginalized communities, helping them navigate complex healthcare systems. Working with these communities helped me realize how vital it is to raise awareness, provide education, and advocate for people who might not have a voice. Losing my aunt made me understand how crucial it is to have strong support systems in place—not just for patients but for their families too. From this experience, I know that education and awareness are essential. If given the chance to focus on brain cancer, I would use my skills and background to promote early detection and raise awareness, especially in underrepresented communities where healthcare access is often limited. This scholarship would allow me to continue my education in nursing, where I aim to specialize in oncology, particularly in areas of preventive care and patient education. Through this career path, I hope to contribute to cancer awareness, focusing not only on treatment but also on emotional support and resources for patients and families. My long-term goal is to work in environments where I can help bridge the gap for those who may not have easy access to cancer care or education. Additionally, with the scholarship’s help, I would seek out opportunities to collaborate with cancer advocacy organizations that focus on brain cancer to continue building awareness and creating a support system for affected individuals. I also see myself developing or contributing to public health initiatives that focus on cancer prevention and education in underserved communities. As a Mexican woman who comes from a low-income background, I know how important it is for these communities to have access to resources and information. By sharing my personal experiences and background, I hope to inspire others to take proactive steps in understanding their health and seeking support early on. Receiving this scholarship would not only help me complete my nursing degree but also empower me to bring about the changes I want to see in healthcare, especially regarding cancer support. It would give me the tools to create more awareness about brain cancer and ensure that fewer families have to experience the helplessness mine did. Through education, advocacy, and compassion, I am determined to make a difference in the lives of those affected by brain cancer.
    Tamurai's Adventure Scholarship
I was drawn to the medical field at a young age, motivated by my desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Growing up in a low-income family, I witnessed firsthand the challenges that come with limited access to healthcare. These experiences instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a passion for helping people, particularly those from underserved communities. Today, as a single mother pursuing a nursing degree, I strive to set an example for my son while fulfilling my dream of improving the lives of others through compassionate, patient-centered care. Over the past decade, I’ve gained valuable experience as a medical assistant in a variety of settings, including internal medicine, family practice, fertility, and male urology clinics. This diverse background has provided me with a holistic view of healthcare, and I’ve learned how important it is to treat each patient as a whole person, not just their symptoms. One of my most formative experiences was working at Denver Health, where I served a few committees. These roles reinforced my belief in advocating for marginalized communities, as I helped ensure that they received appropriate and equitable healthcare. I’ve also had the privilege of helping organize community outreach events and volunteer projects, such as cleaning up downtown after the George Floyd marches, working with LGBTQ initiatives, and assisting low-income families through the DHA. These experiences deepened my understanding of the barriers to healthcare that many people face and strengthened my commitment to addressing these inequities. Losing my aunt to breast cancer and my cousin at a young age has also shaped my outlook. These personal losses fueled my determination to work towards improving preventive care and education, particularly for those in high-risk communities. My time in cardiology, under the mentorship of a leading cardiologist at Denver Health, taught me the significance of early detection and preventive measures. Working with patients in this setting showed me how empowering individuals with knowledge about their health can lead to better outcomes. In my future career as a nurse, I aim to combine my medical knowledge with my commitment to advocacy. I want to work in environments where I can help bridge the gap for patients who feel unheard or misunderstood. Whether through working in public health, contributing to research, or continuing my involvement in community health programs, my goal is to advocate for policies and practices that make healthcare more accessible and inclusive. As I move forward in my education, I also plan to pursue specialties in areas such as cardiology and reproductive health. By focusing on these fields, I hope to offer targeted support to patients dealing with chronic conditions or seeking family planning assistance, both of which are deeply personal to me based on my own experiences. Ultimately, my goal is to build a career where I not only provide excellent care to individuals but also work towards creating a healthcare system that is more just, inclusive, and accessible to all. I believe that by combining my background in patient care with a focus on advocacy, I can make a meaningful impact on the lives of my patients and contribute to the larger goal of improving healthcare for all communities.
    Eden Alaine Memorial Scholarship
Losing my aunt to breast cancer was the most difficult experience of my life. She wasn’t just a beloved family member—she was my idol. In her early twenties, she worked as a firefighter, risking her life to protect others. Later, she became a police officer in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she continued to serve her community with bravery and integrity. Her strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication to helping others deeply inspired me, and her loss left an immense void in my heart. My aunt was always the embodiment of courage. As a child, I admired the stories of her firefighting days and how she put others’ safety above her own. Her transition to law enforcement further demonstrated her selflessness and commitment to making a difference. In our family, she was the anchor—always the first to lend a hand, offer advice, or simply listen when anyone needed support. She balanced her tough career with a nurturing, compassionate spirit, qualities I admired and tried to emulate even from a young age. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was a shock. She had always been the strong one in the family, the person who took care of everyone else. Watching her fight this disease was heart-wrenching. Despite the pain and exhaustion, she remained courageous, fighting the cancer with the same determination she had shown throughout her life. Her battle became a lesson for me in resilience and grace under pressure. During her illness, I saw the power of family and community support more clearly than ever. My family rallied around her, just as she had always been there for us. This experience brought us closer, but it was also a painful reminder of how fragile life can be. My aunt’s illness showed me that no matter how strong we may seem, we all need the love and support of those around us. This understanding has since become a cornerstone of how I approach life and relationships. After she passed, I struggled with overwhelming grief. It was difficult to imagine life without her, the woman I had looked up to for so long. But in the midst of that sorrow, I found myself reflecting on the values she lived by: bravery, compassion, and service to others. I realized that the best way to honor her memory was to live out those values in my own life. Her passing had a profound impact on my decision to pursue a career in healthcare. I wanted to dedicate my life to helping others, just as she had. Becoming a nurse felt like a natural way to carry on her legacy of service. I want to be there for people in their most vulnerable moments, providing care and support when they need it most. Though the pain of losing my aunt remains, I continue to be inspired by her life and legacy. Her strength, courage, and love shaped the person I am today, and I strive to make her proud every day by living with the same values she exemplified.
CREATIVE. INSPIRED. HAPPY Mid-Career Writing Scholarship
Writing has always been a meaningful outlet for me, allowing me to express my thoughts, emotions, and ideas in ways that sometimes feel impossible to convey through spoken words. I love writing because it offers a space for reflection, creativity, and storytelling. It allows me to connect with myself and others on a deeper level, offering a sense of clarity and purpose. Writing gives me the freedom to explore complex thoughts, share personal experiences, and communicate in a way that is both empowering and therapeutic. One of the things I love most about writing is its ability to transcend barriers. Whether it’s writing about a personal experience or diving into research, writing helps me process my feelings, understand the world around me, and reach out to others. As someone who comes from a low-income family where opportunities to share ideas or thoughts were limited, writing became a space where I could develop my voice and communicate openly. It taught me the importance of self-expression and the power of words to heal, inspire, and inform. My passion for writing also ties into my desire to further my education. I’ve always believed that education is the key to unlocking new opportunities and reaching my full potential. Pursuing a nursing degree is part of my goal to impact the healthcare field in a more significant way. However, continuing my education is about more than just professional advancement; it’s about self-growth and providing a better future for my family. I am driven by the desire to set an example for my son and to show him the value of education, perseverance, and resilience. Throughout my career as a medical assistant, I have experienced the rewards of helping others, but I have also seen the limitations of what I could achieve without further education. I want to bridge the gap between where I am now and where I aspire to be, which is a position where I can have a greater influence on patient care and contribute to making healthcare more accessible and inclusive. By continuing my education, I can gain the knowledge and skills necessary to serve my community in a more impactful way, particularly in underserved populations that face challenges like language barriers, limited access to healthcare, and lack of resources. Writing and education are deeply intertwined for me. Writing has allowed me to reflect on my journey, articulate my goals, and explore the challenges I’ve faced, such as overcoming self-doubt and managing the responsibilities of being a single mother while pursuing my degree. Writing has been a tool for me to process these experiences and stay focused on my long-term goals. Ultimately, I want to further my education because I believe in the transformative power of knowledge, both for myself and for those I aim to help. Whether through my future work as a nurse or by setting an example for my son, I want to show that education is not just about achieving a professional title but about personal growth, creating positive change, and inspiring others. Writing will continue to play an important role in this journey, helping me navigate challenges, celebrate successes, and keep pushing forward toward my dreams.
HeySunday Scholarship for Moms in College
The decision to continue my education was inspired by my deep passion for healthcare and my desire to create a better future for myself and my son. As a medical assistant for over ten years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in various medical settings, including internal medicine, fertility, and family practice. Through these experiences, I saw how much of an impact compassionate care can have on individuals and their families. However, I also recognized the limitations in my role and knew that advancing my education in nursing would allow me to make an even greater difference. Coming from a low-income family with limited educational opportunities, pursuing higher education was not always a given. My family valued hard work, but formal education was not emphasized. This created an internal challenge, as I grappled with imposter syndrome and doubt about whether I could succeed in a higher education setting. However, my determination to break this cycle, provide a better life for my son, and serve others pushed me forward. The road has not been easy, especially balancing the roles of being both a student and a mother. As a single mom, the responsibilities of raising a child fall solely on me. It can be overwhelming to juggle schoolwork, my job, and being present for my son. There are days when exhaustion sets in, and it feels like there are not enough hours in the day to meet every demand. Yet, this challenge has also become one of my greatest motivators. I want to show my son that with perseverance, anything is possible. I want him to see that education can be a path to a better future and that hard work pays off, even when the road is tough. To manage my roles, I have learned to rely heavily on time management and support systems. I schedule my days meticulously, dedicating certain hours to studying, working, and spending quality time with my son. It requires discipline, but I remind myself that this effort is for a greater purpose. Additionally, I lean on family and friends for support when needed. They have been a crucial part of helping me navigate these challenges, and I am grateful for their encouragement. Pursuing my education is not just about achieving a degree; it’s about breaking barriers, both for myself and for my family. I want to be a role model for my son, showing him the value of resilience and education. I also want to use my future nursing career to give back to underserved communities, particularly those who face similar obstacles to healthcare access and education that I have experienced. Ultimately, the sacrifices I make now will pay off not only in the form of a career I am passionate about but in the legacy I leave for my son and the example I set for others like me who dream of breaking the cycle.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
My passion for the healthcare field is deeply rooted in my personal experiences and upbringing. Coming from a low-income family with limited access to healthcare, I witnessed firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate medical systems, especially for those who lack resources and education. This challenge inspired me to pursue a career in nursing, where I can provide care, support, and guidance to those who need it most. Becoming a medical assistant over ten years ago was my first step into this world, and it gave me the chance to work closely with patients in a variety of settings, including internal medicine, fertility, and family practice. I also had the privilege of working at Denver Health, where I was part of initiatives like the LGBTQ committee and the vaccine management team. These roles allowed me to not only improve my clinical skills but also become more aware of the diverse needs of different communities. My experiences fueled my desire to continue my education and become a nurse, as I see nursing as a way to make a more direct and significant impact on individual lives and the community as a whole. A key personal goal driving me is the opportunity to advocate for those who often feel voiceless within healthcare systems. I aim to support underserved populations, such as immigrants and minority communities, by providing culturally competent care. Growing up as a Mexican woman, I am acutely aware of the cultural and language barriers that many face when seeking medical attention. I want to bridge these gaps by using my bilingual skills in English and Spanish to communicate with patients effectively, ensuring they feel understood and cared for. Furthermore, as a single mother, I want to set an example for my son by showing him the importance of perseverance, compassion, and dedication to helping others. I believe that through nursing, I can not only provide for my family but also make a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds. Ultimately, my goal is to blend my personal experiences, professional skills, and passion for helping others into a nursing career where I can make a tangible impact on the lives of individuals and contribute to the broader goal of creating a more inclusive and accessible healthcare system for everyone.
    Team USA Fan Scholarship
When it comes to cheering for Team USA, one athlete stands out above the rest: Simone Biles. She has become an inspiration to me and many others, not only because of her incredible athletic abilities but also because of her resilience, determination, and courage. Simone’s story resonates with me deeply, as it embodies the power of perseverance and the importance of self-care in the face of overwhelming challenges. Simone Biles has established herself as one of the most decorated gymnasts in history. Her ability to perform skills that no one else in the sport can achieve is awe-inspiring. Watching her perform on the vault, balance beam, and floor exercise is like witnessing art in motion. Her routines are filled with grace, power, and an energy that seems almost superhuman. Every time she takes to the mat, I find myself holding my breath, knowing that I’m witnessing history. It’s not just about her impressive medal count; it’s about the artistry and heart she puts into every routine. Beyond her athletic prowess, what truly makes Simone my favorite is her openness about mental health. During the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she made the difficult decision to withdraw from several events to focus on her mental well-being. This decision sparked conversations worldwide about the pressures athletes face and the importance of prioritizing mental health over medals. In a society that often emphasizes pushing through pain and ignoring one’s struggles, Simone’s choice to put her well-being first was both courageous and groundbreaking. As someone who is working on overcoming personal mental health challenges myself, seeing her vulnerability and honesty was inspiring. It was a reminder that even the strongest individuals need to step back and care for themselves at times. Simone Biles also serves as a powerful role model for young women and athletes of color. As a woman of color, seeing her excel in a sport that has not always been diverse is empowering. Her achievements remind me that with hard work and dedication, barriers can be broken, and new standards can be set. She uses her platform to advocate for positive change, whether it’s addressing issues within the sport of gymnastics or promoting mental health awareness. Her influence goes beyond the gymnasium; she stands as a symbol of resilience and hope for those who have faced adversity. Cheering for Simone Biles isn’t just about supporting an athlete—it’s about supporting what she represents. She is a reminder that success is not just defined by the number of medals won but by the strength it takes to be true to oneself. Simone’s journey has taught me the importance of balance, of striving for greatness while also listening to my inner needs. Every time she steps onto the world stage, I cheer not just for her athletic feats but for the bravery and heart she brings to everything she does. For these reasons, Simone Biles is my favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA, and I believe her legacy will continue to inspire many, including myself, for years to come.

As a single mother, student, and medical assistant with over ten years of experience, I’ve faced numerous challenges in life, both personal and professional. Balancing these roles has taught me resilience, discipline, and compassion—qualities that I value deeply as I pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. I am currently studying nursing while working part-time as a medical assistant. My passion for healthcare began 10 years ago when I became a medical assistant, and over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in internal medicine, fertility, and family practice. My experiences have not only deepened my knowledge of healthcare but have also strengthened my resolve to help others. Coming from a low-income family with limited education, I’ve had to work hard to create opportunities for myself and my son. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but pursuing higher education while managing financial responsibilities has been a significant challenge. This scholarship would make an immense difference by alleviating some of the financial strain, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial burdens that often weigh on me. It would also give me the opportunity to be a role model for my son, showing him that no matter the obstacles, we can achieve our dreams through dedication and hard work. My long-term goal is to become a registered nurse, with a focus on community health and mental health advocacy. I’m passionate about helping those who are often underserved and vulnerable, particularly in the Hispanic community. I have seen firsthand how mental health challenges can affect individuals and families, especially when compounded by cultural stigmas. By becoming a nurse, I hope to bridge the gap between healthcare and the community, offering support and education while advocating for mental health awareness. A significant challenge I faced was the loss of my dog, Thunder, who was more than just a pet—he was family. His passing was emotionally devastating, and I struggled with grief for months. During this time, I leaned on my family, who helped me process my emotions. I also found strength in my passion for helping others, which kept me grounded. It was through this emotional trial that I learned the importance of resilience and self-care, lessons I hope to pass on as I continue in my healthcare career. This scholarship would not only provide financial relief but also bring me closer to my goal of becoming a nurse, helping me make a lasting impact on my community.
Colorado Pain Care - Excellence in Action Scholarship
One situation that exemplifies my ability to embody the core pillar of being “hungry” occurred during a time when I was both a medical assistant and pursuing my degree in nursing. Balancing work, school, and family has always been a challenge, but my hunger for knowledge and self-improvement drove me to take on more than I initially thought possible. I wanted to go beyond my basic duties and make an impact on my team and patients in a meaningful way. I remember one particular incident that tested my limits in the clinic. As a medical assistant working in male fertility, we encountered a patient who had been trying to conceive with his partner for several years. He had been to multiple clinics but was frustrated by the lack of answers. This patient’s case was emotionally and medically complex, and I felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility to ensure he received the best care possible. Although my primary role was to assist with procedures and manage routine tasks, I realized that in this situation, I could do more. I took the initiative to thoroughly research the latest advancements in male fertility treatments and discuss them with the physicians at the clinic. This extra effort took many hours outside of my scheduled shifts, but I was determined to help find a solution. I coordinated with the lab team to ensure all testing was up to date, facilitated communication between the patient and our specialist, and provided emotional support during every visit. Exceeding expectations in this scenario meant stepping up, not just as a medical assistant, but as someone who was deeply committed to the patient’s journey. I took the time to explain complicated procedures in simpler terms to the patient and his partner, allowing them to feel more at ease. I also connected them with additional resources, including support groups for couples dealing with infertility, which helped reduce their emotional stress. By embodying the “hungry” pillar, I pushed myself to go beyond the standard expectations of my role. I didn’t wait for someone to tell me what to do; I proactively sought out information, collaborated with the team, and acted as a bridge between the patient and the doctor. I learned that hunger for knowledge and improvement isn’t just about advancing one’s career but also about being willing to put in the extra effort to better the lives of others. The impact of my actions was clear. Not only did the patient receive personalized care, but he and his partner also left our clinic feeling heard, valued, and hopeful for the future. They expressed gratitude for the level of care and attention they received, something they hadn’t found at other clinics. Furthermore, the physicians I worked with appreciated my initiative, and it strengthened the teamwork within our clinic. We were able to streamline communication and improve the overall patient experience, making a lasting difference in our approach to patient care. In the end, my hunger to go above and beyond led to a positive outcome for the patient and a greater sense of fulfillment in my own career. This experience reminded me that no matter how challenging the circumstances, a relentless drive to improve can lead to extraordinary results.

Not long ago, I faced one of the most devastating losses of my life when my aunt passed away from breast cancer. Watching her battle this relentless disease left a profound impact on me, changing the way I view health, care, and resilience. Her loss was not only painful but also a pivotal moment that shaped my personal, professional, and educational journey. Witnessing my aunt’s strength during her fight with cancer was a powerful lesson in courage and endurance. Despite the physical toll of the disease, she remained hopeful, showing me what it truly means to be resilient. Her journey, though difficult, inspired me to find strength in adversity and to channel my grief into purpose. It was during this time that I realized how essential comprehensive healthcare is—not just for the patient but for the entire family. The emotional toll of my aunt’s battle and passing led me to seek mental health support for myself. Through therapy, I began to understand that grief comes in waves, and healing is a long, non-linear process. I developed coping mechanisms such as mindfulness, journaling, and reaching out to my support network. These tools have been instrumental in my ongoing recovery, allowing me to process my emotions while finding ways to honor my aunt’s memory. My experience of loss has significantly influenced my decision to pursue a nursing degree. Growing up in a low-income family, I have seen firsthand the challenges in accessing healthcare, especially in underserved communities. My goal is to become a nurse who advocates for comprehensive care—care that not only addresses the physical aspects of illness but also the emotional and mental well-being of patients and their families. I want to be the type of nurse who helps others through their most difficult moments, much like I wished I could have done more for my aunt during her fight. To manage my mental health and continue my recovery, I have prioritized self-care, balancing my emotional well-being with my academic and professional goals. Self-care, for me, includes spending quality time with family, staying physically active, and engaging in hobbies like reading, all of which help me stay grounded. These practices ensure that I remain focused and resilient as I work toward my goals, while also preparing me for the emotional demands of the nursing profession. My aunt’s battle with breast cancer has fueled my desire to work with cancer patients, helping them and their families navigate the emotional and physical challenges that come with such a diagnosis. Her legacy lives on through the lessons she taught me—strength, compassion, and the importance of resilience. These lessons will guide me as I continue to grow personally and professionally, ensuring that I can provide holistic, empathetic care to every patient I encounter.

Losing my cousin eight years ago felt like the ground had been ripped out from under me. The pain of that loss still feels fresh, as if it happened yesterday. I remember the disbelief, the questions with no answers, and the overwhelming sadness that clouded my days. I had to learn to navigate life without their presence, and it wasn’t easy. In the immediate aftermath, I felt like I was drowning in grief. It was hard to concentrate, to breathe, to go on with the daily routine. The challenge of getting through each day, let alone finding joy, felt insurmountable. I often asked myself, “Why didn’t I see the signs?” or “What could I have done?” These thoughts weighed heavily on my heart. Over time, though, I learned some powerful lessons. I learned that grief is not linear; it comes in waves. Some days, I feel like I’m back at the beginning, and other days, I can smile at the memory of my cousin without feeling that immediate stab of pain. I’ve also learned that it’s okay to not have all the answers. The guilt and the questions were burdens I needed to release to heal. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of community. I leaned on friends, family, and even counselors to help me process my grief. Their support became a beacon of hope in the darkest moments. They taught me that healing doesn’t mean forgetting but finding a way to live with the loss while still moving forward. Despite the tragedy, I’ve found resilience through honoring my cousin’s memory. Their life, though cut short, was full of love, laughter, and dreams. I’ve learned to channel my grief into purpose, supporting others who have gone through similar experiences and raising awareness about mental health. I want others to know they are not alone, that it’s okay to reach out for help. Hope, for me, is now intertwined with advocacy. I’ve made it my mission to be more open about the struggles that people may not talk about enough. I share my story because I believe in the power of connection. I believe that by sharing my cousin’s legacy and the lessons I’ve learned, I can help others find light in their darkest times. Eight years later, I am stronger, but I am also more compassionate. I have learned that resilience doesn’t mean never feeling pain; it means finding the strength to live alongside it and use it to help others. In the face of tragedy, I’ve found hope in supporting others through their mental health challenges and ensuring that my cousin’s memory continues to inspire me to make a difference.

My name is Cindy, and I am pursuing a degree in nursing with a deep commitment to helping others. I come from a humble background, growing up in a low-income family with limited education, which has instilled in me a strong sense of resilience and determination. As a single mom, I have learned the importance of balancing multiple roles—being a mother, student, and professional—while continuously working towards a better future for myself and my family. My journey has been shaped by the values of hard work, compassion, and a desire to contribute positively to society. While my professional path is rooted in healthcare, agriculture and farming have played a significant role in shaping my perspective and approach to life. Although I have not been directly involved in large-scale agriculture, growing up in a Mexican family, I have always been close to nature and the land. My grandparents, who were farmers, taught me the value of cultivating the earth, not just for sustenance, but as a way of life. The patience, dedication, and connection to the land that farming requires are values that have influenced me in ways beyond the field. I believe that the most profound impact I can make on the world is through healthcare, particularly by becoming a nurse. Nursing appeals to me because it allows me to directly help individuals during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Through my work as a medical assistant in various settings, including male fertility clinics and internal medicine, I have gained a deep understanding of the importance of patient care, empathy, and advocacy. These experiences have further solidified my passion for nursing and my desire to make a difference in the lives of others. In addition to helping individuals heal physically, I plan to use my role as a nurse to raise awareness about mental health challenges. Mental health is often overlooked, particularly in communities of color, and I believe that by addressing both the physical and emotional well-being of patients, I can contribute to more holistic and effective healthcare practices. My goal is to serve as a role model and advocate, especially for underrepresented communities who may not have access to adequate mental health resources. The lessons I learned from my family’s farming background have had a lasting impact on my personal and professional life. Farming teaches you to be patient, adaptable, and resilient—qualities that are crucial in healthcare. Just like in farming, where you plant seeds and nurture them over time, I see my future career as a nurse as an opportunity to plant seeds of hope and healing in the lives of my patients. Growing up in a family that valued hard work and community has also made me more aware of the importance of sustainability and caring for our environment. While my focus is healthcare, I recognize the interconnectedness of health and the environment. Agriculture has taught me that taking care of the earth is just as important as taking care of ourselves. I hope to incorporate these values into my future nursing practice by advocating for public health policies that address the links between environmental health and human health. Through my future endeavors in nursing, I aim to make a positive impact on the world by providing compassionate, comprehensive care that addresses both physical and mental health needs. The values instilled in me through my family's agricultural background—resilience, patience, and a deep connection to community—will guide me in this mission. I am committed to using my skills, education, and experiences to uplift others and create a healthier, more equitable world for all.

My experiences in the healthcare field, including working in male fertility, internal medicine, and family practice, have provided me with valuable insight into the diverse needs of patients, especially those from underserved backgrounds. Completing my nursing degree will empower me to provide for my son and give him the life he deserves. More importantly, it will allow me to support others, particularly those from backgrounds similar to mine. I have seen the impact that financial barriers and lack of education can have on families, and I want to be a resource for those in my community, especially those who don’t have access to the same opportunities. I plan to continue advocating for healthcare access and education for marginalized communities, making sure that no one is left behind. Education will not only change my life, but it will allow me to elevate others. With my background in medical assisting, I’ve had the privilege of working in different specialties, including male fertility, internal medicine, and family practice. My long-term goal is to take the skills I’ve learned and apply them in underserved communities, ensuring that everyone—regardless of income or background—can access quality healthcare. In the future, I hope to give back not just as a nurse but as a role model, showing young women and single mothers that their dreams are achievable, even when the odds seem stacked against them. I’m also passionate about learning and constantly seek out opportunities to further my education and broaden my understanding of the medical field. In addition to my studies, I’m also applying for a scholarship that focuses on mental health, an area I care about deeply. Over the years, I’ve faced my own mental health challenges, particularly as a single mom balancing work, school, and personal life. Through therapy and self-reflection, I’ve developed a greater understanding of the importance of mental health support, and I’m committed to raising awareness about these issues in my community. I hope to use my platform as a healthcare professional to advocate for mental health awareness, particularly in underserved communities like my own. Looking toward the future, my goal is to become a registered nurse and work in a clinical setting that allows me to give back to the community. I would love to work in cardiology, given my family history of heart disease, or in public health, where I could continue advocating for marginalized populations, including the LGBTQ community. Ultimately, I hope to become a role model for my son and for others who come from similar backgrounds, showing them that with hard work and determination, they too can achieve their dreams. In conclusion, my life’s journey has been shaped by my love for my family, my passion for healthcare, and my dedication to overcoming challenges. Books have always played a pivotal role in my life, serving not only as a source of knowledge but as a guide for my personal and professional development. The books I’ve read have taught me to dream beyond my circumstances, expand my worldview, and hone my passion for helping others. As a Mexican woman, a single mother, and someone who grew up in a low-income family with limited educational opportunities, books provided the insight and motivation I needed to pursue a career in nursing. They have shaped my goals, driven my ambition, and continue to influence how I see the world and my role in it. One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned from reading is the importance of resilience. Stories like “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls showed me that challenges, no matter how overwhelming, can be overcome with determination and perseverance. Walls' story of growing up in an unstable home environment, facing poverty and neglect, deeply resonated with me. It mirrored some of my own experiences, but more importantly, it showed me that my past does not have to define my future. This book ignited a desire in me to work not only towards my own success but to uplift others in the process, which directly influences my goal of becoming a nurse and contributing to my community's well-being. Another theme that has surfaced through my reading is the value of empathy and understanding. Books like Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning” helped me realize that every individual is fighting their own battle, often unseen by the world. This notion resonates with me deeply as I pursue a career in healthcare. The idea that healing goes beyond the physical, that emotional and mental support are equally critical, has shaped how I approach patient care. It has become a guiding principle for my goal to be not just a competent healthcare professional but one who is compassionate and attentive to the holistic needs of patients. I’ve also drawn inspiration from literature that challenges societal norms and explores social justice. Books like “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” by Anne Fadiman taught me about the complexities of cultural competence in healthcare. As someone who comes from a minority background, I understand the importance of respecting different cultural perspectives. This has strengthened my desire to bridge the gap in healthcare disparities, particularly for underrepresented communities, and to be an advocate for cultural sensitivity in medical settings. Lastly, books about personal development, such as “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg, have reinforced the idea that small, consistent actions can lead to significant, life-changing results. This notion has helped me stay focused on my academic journey despite the challenges I’ve faced balancing work, motherhood, and school. The knowledge that progress is incremental and habits define success has kept me grounded as I pursue my nursing degree. It has given me the tools to create a structured path forward and maintain the discipline necessary to achieve my goals. In conclusion, the books I’ve read have shaped who I am today by teaching me resilience, empathy, cultural competence, and the power of daily habits. They have inspired me to set ambitious goals and have equipped me with the mindset necessary to overcome obstacles. As I continue to grow as a student, a professional, and a mother, I will carry these lessons with me, using them to guide my path toward becoming a compassionate nurse who makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Growing up in a single-parent household shaped me into the person I am today. Raised by my mom, I watched her work tirelessly to make ends meet, and her resilience became a part of my own character. Despite the challenges, I never felt like I was missing out on anything. My mom always made sure that our home was filled with love, support, and a sense of stability—even when things were tough. This experience taught me the importance of hard work, empathy, and adaptability, qualities that continue to guide me in my personal life and my career aspirations. As a single mom myself, I now see the world through my mother's eyes. Balancing work, school, and raising a child requires a level of determination and strength that I never fully understood until I was in her shoes. It’s not easy, but it has made me more driven to succeed—not just for myself, but for my child as well. I want to set an example of perseverance and the belief that no matter the obstacles, we can create a better future for ourselves. My experience as a single parent has also fueled my desire to pursue a career where I can help others. I am currently studying nursing because I want to be in a position where I can make a difference in people's lives, especially those facing difficult circumstances. I’ve always been passionate about helping others, and my journey has shown me that compassion and dedication can go a long way in supporting those who are struggling. I hope to use my skills and knowledge to provide comfort and care to patients who need it most, just as my family and community have supported me. In the future, I see myself working in healthcare, helping to bridge gaps in care for underserved communities. I want to use my bilingual skills and cultural understanding to provide better communication and support for Spanish-speaking patients. Growing up in a low-income family has made me acutely aware of the disparities in access to healthcare, and I’m determined to be part of the solution. I want to advocate for those who might feel overlooked or unheard and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to receive quality care, regardless of their background or financial situation. Ultimately, my goal is to create a legacy of kindness and service that my child can be proud of. I want to show that the challenges we face don’t define us—they give us the strength to rise above and do something meaningful. By dedicating my career to helping others, I’m not only securing a better future for my family but also contributing to a world where people in need are treated with the respect, empathy, and care they deserve.
John Nathan Lee Foundation Heart Scholarship
Cardiac disease has left a lasting imprint on my family, particularly on my father’s side. Growing up, I always knew that this was a serious issue because it wasn’t just one family member affected, but several. Seeing my father, uncles, and grandparents struggle with heart problems has shaped how I view health, wellness, and resilience. While I haven’t had cardiac disease myself, watching the journey of those I love has presented emotional and psychological challenges, requiring me to stay strong and proactive in understanding how to prevent future issues. My grandfather was the first in the family to suffer from heart complications. I remember the fear and uncertainty that his diagnosis brought into our home. As I got older, I saw my father face similar challenges. The reality that cardiac disease runs in my family became undeniable, and the knowledge of this hereditary risk has constantly been a looming presence. It wasn’t easy to see someone as strong as my father become vulnerable, requiring medications, regular check-ups, and a shift in lifestyle. One of the major obstacles I’ve faced as a result of this family history is anxiety. I constantly worry about my father’s health and the possibility of cardiac disease affecting me in the future. The stress of wondering whether I might eventually face the same issues has, at times, been overwhelming. This fear pushed me to become more conscious of health and well-being, encouraging me to adopt preventive measures like exercising regularly, eating a heart-healthy diet, and managing stress. My father’s health issues became a constant reminder that while genetics play a role, lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Despite working in healthcare myself, seeing someone you love in a hospital setting is never easy. You understand the protocols and the treatments, but the emotional toll of being a caregiver and supporter never lessens. I had to step up, helping him manage appointments, understand medications, and sometimes make difficult lifestyle adjustments. This role reversal—caring for the person who once cared for me—was challenging yet deeply humbling. It reinforced my desire to be an advocate for health and wellness, both for my family and my future patients as I pursue a career in nursing. One significant lesson I have learned from watching my father’s health journey is the importance of community and mental health. Cardiovascular issues don’t just affect the person diagnosed; they affect everyone around them. It has become clear to me how important mental and emotional well-being are, both for the person struggling with the disease and for the family supporting them. This insight has motivated me to work toward raising awareness about the mental health challenges that often accompany chronic illnesses. As I continue my education, I am determined to not only focus on physical health but also ensure that mental health is part of the conversation, particularly when supporting others through chronic diseases like cardiac issues. In conclusion, the obstacle of cardiac disease running in my family has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility for my own health and the health of those I love. It has motivated me to pursue a career in healthcare, where I can be an advocate for both physical and mental wellness. Through my experiences, I have learned the value of early intervention, lifestyle changes, and emotional resilience, which I aim to pass on to my future patients. Despite the challenges cardiac disease has brought, it has also given me the strength and perspective to approach life with greater intention and care.
    John J Costonis Scholarship
As I pursue my degree in nursing, my future goals are deeply connected to both my personal experiences and my passion for helping others. My ultimate goal is to become a registered nurse and work in underserved communities, where I can use my skills and experiences to make a meaningful impact. In particular, I want to focus on raising awareness for mental health challenges and providing compassionate care to individuals who may feel marginalized or misunderstood. I am committed to improving access to healthcare for vulnerable populations, knowing firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate the system when resources are scarce or inaccessible. To work towards this goal, I’ve taken significant steps both professionally and personally. I became a medical assistant 10 years ago and have had the privilege of working in various healthcare settings, including internal medicine, fertility, family practice, and urology. These experiences have provided me with a well-rounded understanding of patient care, as well as the opportunity to develop specialized skills in areas such as male fertility and urological health. Additionally, I was a member of the LGBTQ and vaccine management committees at Denver Health, where I played a role in promoting inclusive care and ensuring proper vaccination protocols. These roles helped shape my understanding of the importance of equity in healthcare and the need for culturally competent care for all patients, regardless of their background or identity. Despite my professional progress, the road to achieving my goals has been filled with challenges. As a single mother from a low-income family, I’ve faced significant financial barriers while trying to balance work, school, and raising my son. Additionally, as the first person in my family to pursue higher education, I have had to navigate the complexities of college life on my own, without the guidance or experience that others might take for granted. This has meant juggling part-time jobs to make ends meet while also dedicating myself to my studies. It’s been difficult, but I’ve learned to manage my time effectively and remain focused on my goals, knowing that the hard work I’m putting in today will lead to a better future for both my family and the communities I aim to serve. Another challenge I have faced along this journey has been addressing my own mental health. There have been times when the weight of balancing my responsibilities as a mother, student, and employee has been overwhelming. However, through this struggle, this experience has further fueled my passion for raising awareness about mental health issues, particularly in underserved communities where mental health resources are often limited. Pursuing my college education while managing these hardships has taught me invaluable lessons in resilience, adaptability, and perseverance. These experiences have strengthened my resolve to not only succeed in my academic journey but also to become a nurse who deeply understands the struggles that many patients face. I am confident that my background, both personal and professional, has prepared me to make a meaningful impact in the field of healthcare. I look forward to using my education and experiences to continue helping others, advocating for mental health awareness, and working toward creating a more equitable healthcare system for all. In conclusion, every step has reinforced my commitment to making a difference. I will continue to work hard, not only to better my own circumstances but also to provide compassionate and effective care for those who need it most. By obtaining my nursing degree, I am confident that I will be able to fulfill my passion for helping others, especially those who may feel overlooked or underserved by the healthcare system.

I come from a family with low education and financial means, and this has shaped much of who I am today. Growing up in a low-income household, I witnessed the struggles of my parents as they worked tirelessly to provide for our family. Their dedication instilled in me the importance of hard work, resilience, and compassion for others facing similar circumstances. My personal experiences with socioeconomic adversity have inspired me to pursue a career in nursing, where I can not only provide medical care but also advocate for individuals in underserved communities. Living through financial hardship has significantly shaped my beliefs and relationships. I’ve learned the value of community, as my family and I often leaned on our neighbors and extended family for support during tough times. This sense of interconnectedness has taught me the importance of giving back, fostering relationships, and uplifting those around me. It has also driven me to be compassionate and empathetic towards others who are facing challenges, recognizing that socioeconomic struggles are often invisible but deeply impactful. In my relationships, I’ve become someone who friends and family can rely on for emotional support. I know firsthand how overwhelming financial and social pressures can be, and I make it a priority to offer encouragement and understanding to those who are struggling. These experiences have also made me committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and educational inequity, both within my family and in my community. In my future career as a nurse, I plan to make a positive impact by advocating for accessible healthcare and educating my patients, especially those from low-income backgrounds, about their health and wellness. I understand that socioeconomic adversity can limit access to quality care and resources, so I want to bridge that gap by ensuring patients feel empowered to take control of their health. Additionally, I hope to work with local organizations that address socioeconomic disparities by providing health education and resources to underserved communities. At school, I plan to be involved in initiatives that support students from low-income backgrounds, whether it’s through mentorship programs, volunteering, or organizing workshops on financial literacy, mental health, and educational opportunities. I believe that addressing socioeconomic adversity requires a multifaceted approach, and I aim to contribute by helping others navigate the challenges I have faced. Ultimately, experiencing socioeconomic adversity has made me determined to not only improve my own circumstances but also to uplift others facing similar struggles. Throughout my life, I have witnessed the significant impact that mental health challenges can have on individuals and communities. Growing up in a low-income family, mental health was often stigmatized, with little access to resources or guidance on how to cope with anxiety, stress, or depression. However, I have always had a deep passion for helping others, which is why I have actively sought ways to support those around me with their mental health. As a medical assistant and a nursing student, I have had the privilege of interacting with patients daily. In my current role, I make it a point to connect with each patient on an emotional level, providing a listening ear when they feel overwhelmed or anxious about their health concerns. In these moments, I practice empathy, patience, and compassion—tools I know are essential for anyone facing mental health challenges. Additionally, within my family and community, I have become someone who people turn to for support and advice. I am mindful of encouraging open conversations about mental health, especially among those who may feel isolated or misunderstood. Whether it's providing resources, lending a compassionate ear, or helping someone connect with a professional, I make it my mission to ensure that no one around me feels like they have to face their struggles alone. My experience and studies in nursing will allow me to expand on this passion in a professional setting. In the future, I plan to use my knowledge to not only provide medical care but to also foster emotional well-being in my patients. Julie Holloway Bryant Memorial Scholarship
I am a person deeply passionate about health, wellness, and the care of others, which has driven me to pursue a career in nursing. From a young age, I knew that helping people was my calling, and this has only grown stronger as I have progressed in my studies. My primary goal after graduation is to work in a clinical or hospital setting where I can put my knowledge and skills to use in a meaningful way. Whether it's providing direct patient care, offering health education, or simply being a compassionate presence during challenging times, I aim to improve the quality of life of the patients I serve. I am particularly drawn to the areas of public health and specialized clinics, where I believe I can make a profound impact. In public health, there is an opportunity to reach larger communities and work toward preventive care, which can change the trajectory of countless lives. In a more specialized clinic, I can focus on specific patient populations, such as pediatric care or chronic disease management, where in-depth knowledge and tailored support are crucial. Spanish is my first language, and being bilingual has played a significant role in shaping my experiences, both academically and professionally. One of the primary challenges I have faced is the language barrier itself, particularly during my education in English-speaking environments. At times, navigating complex medical terminology or articulating my thoughts in a second language has required extra effort and focus. However, I have turned this challenge into an opportunity for growth, developing resilience and a commitment to continually improve my language skills. I now feel confident communicating in both languages, which has greatly expanded my ability to connect with diverse groups of people. On the other hand, being bilingual has brought numerous advantages that I have come to appreciate deeply, especially in the healthcare field. The ability to speak both Spanish and English allows me to serve a broader range of patients, many of whom may face difficulties communicating their needs in English. By being able to communicate in their native language, I can help these patients feel more comfortable, understood, and supported, which is crucial in healthcare settings where trust and clear communication are key to positive outcomes. Post-graduation, I am committed to continuing my education and developing my skills further, not only in nursing but also in improving my bilingual communication. I believe this will enable me to better serve the community, particularly those who may face linguistic or cultural barriers, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals from all backgrounds.

These experiences heightened my awareness of the impact mental health has on all aspects of life, motivating me to pursue a career in healthcare, particularly in nursing, where I can advocate for mental health awareness and provide support to those who need it most. Understanding and managing my own mental health challenges has been a key factor in shaping my personal and professional goals. Dealing with stress, anxiety, and feelings of self-doubt throughout my educational journey taught me the importance of resilience and self-care. I realized that mental health is not something to be pushed aside or ignored, but rather something that requires attention, understanding, and a commitment to finding balance. This realization has motivated me to pursue a career in nursing where I can contribute to holistic care—addressing not just the physical, but also the emotional and mental well-being of patients. One significant problem I have overcome in my life is managing the stress and pressure associated with financial instability while pursuing higher education. Coming from a low-income family, financial difficulties were a constant challenge. As the first in my family to attend college, I carried the burden of not only excelling academically but also supporting my family financially. Balancing a part-time job with full-time studies created a persistent struggle that left me feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. At times, I doubted my ability to handle the demands of both work and school effectively. To overcome this challenge, I had to develop strong time-management skills and prioritize self-care. I realized that pushing through without addressing my mental health would only lead to burnout. Seeking help from mentors, advisors, and counseling services was a pivotal step in managing the pressure. They guided me toward resources such as financial aid options, academic support, and stress-management techniques. Therapy helped me understand how to manage the anxiety caused by my financial situation and gave me tools to cope with stress. Through persistence, determination, and seeking help when needed, I maintained my academic performance while continuing to work. This experience has taught me the value of resilience, focus, and the importance of asking for support when necessary. Receiving this scholarship will be instrumental in my continued success and ability to give back to the community. As I pursue my nursing degree, the financial support from this scholarship will ease the burden of working multiple jobs, allowing me to focus more on my studies and clinical training. This will enable me to dedicate more time to volunteering and engaging in community outreach initiatives. My passion lies in serving underserved populations, and I aim to work in community health settings where I can provide care to those who often lack access to adequate healthcare. I also have a strong interest in mental health advocacy and hope to collaborate with organizations that focus on supporting individuals facing mental health challenges, particularly in low-income and marginalized communities. Philately, the study of postage stamps, is a hobby that can capture the imagination of young people by connecting them to history, culture, and art. To encourage youth to pursue this hobby, I would emphasize its visual and educational appeal. By showcasing the unique designs and historical significance of stamps, we can spark interest in the hobby. Organizing workshops, online exhibits, or virtual stamp collections can make philately more accessible to younger audiences. Integrating it into school curriculums, especially in history or geography lessons, can also introduce students to the joy of collecting stamps and uncovering the stories behind them.

Overcoming mental health challenges has been a deeply personal journey for me, shaped by my background, my experiences, and my commitment to growth. Growing up in a low-income family with limited access to educational resources, the stress of navigating financial insecurities, family struggles, and personal expectations took a toll on my mental health. The weight of those realities often left me feeling overwhelmed and, at times, hopeless. However, recognizing the importance of mental health and seeking ways to manage and improve my emotional well-being has become an integral part of my life. One of the most challenging aspects of this journey has been learning to recognize the signs of stress, anxiety, and burnout. As I pursued my studies and worked part-time to support myself and my family, I often found myself feeling mentally and physically exhausted. For a long time, I thought pushing through was the only option, and I ignored the toll this was taking on my mental health. I began to understand that neglecting my emotional well-being would ultimately hinder my success, both personally and academically. This realization was the turning point that made me seek help. I started by reaching out to my support system, which includes my close family, friends, and academic advisors. These individuals played a crucial role in helping me see that it is okay to ask for help and that mental health is just as important as physical health. I also sought therapy and counseling services, which gave me the tools to develop coping strategies like mindfulness, time management, and setting healthy boundaries. Therapy not only helped me navigate the challenges I faced but also empowered me to understand the root causes of my anxiety and stress, such as financial pressure, perfectionism, and self-doubt. Additionally, pursuing a degree in nursing has given me insight into the significance of mental health, both for myself and others. The nursing profession emphasizes holistic care, which includes addressing the mental and emotional needs of patients. My studies have deepened my understanding of mental health disorders and the stigma that surrounds them, especially in low-income and underserved communities like mine. As I continue my education and work towards becoming a nurse, I am committed to using my platform to advocate for mental health awareness and support for others. Moving forward, I plan to actively engage in initiatives that promote mental health awareness, particularly within the healthcare field and in underserved communities. As a medical assistant in a male fertility clinic, I’ve already seen firsthand how mental health can impact individuals’ physical health and overall well-being. Many of the patients I work with experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and emotional strain, and I do my best to offer compassionate care and understanding. I strive to create a safe space where patients feel comfortable sharing their concerns, and I advocate for the integration of mental health screenings and resources into our clinic's routine care. In addition to my work in healthcare, I am also passionate about raising awareness about mental health challenges through education and outreach. I believe that creating open conversations about mental health can help reduce the stigma that prevents so many people from seeking the help they need. As I move forward in my career and continue my education, I am committed to supporting others and raising awareness about the importance of mental health. Whether through my work in healthcare or through community outreach, I am determined to be an advocate for mental health and to help others find the support they need to thrive.
Learner Online Learning Innovator Scholarship for Veterans
As a nursing student, the journey of gaining knowledge and applying it effectively is enhanced by the variety of online platforms, tools, and resources available. These tools have been essential in helping me understand complex topics, reinforce what I’ve learned in class, and apply that knowledge in real-world settings. I utilize several platforms, including YouTube, Quizlet, online academic journals, and medical websites, all of which have played significant roles in shaping my understanding of nursing subjects and preparing me for my career. YouTube has been a particularly valuable resource, offering a vast array of content from medical professionals, educators, and organizations. Channels that focus on anatomy, physiology, and nursing techniques provide in-depth explanations, step-by-step tutorials, and visual aids that help clarify topics that might be difficult to grasp through textbooks alone. For example, I have found videos on clinical procedures, such as inserting catheters or drawing blood, extremely helpful. Watching demonstrations allows me to visualize what I’m learning and gives me more confidence when performing these tasks in the clinical setting. This visual reinforcement bridges the gap between theory and practice, making me feel more prepared for hands-on experiences. Quizlet is another indispensable tool for me. With its flashcards, quizzes, and study games, it offers an interactive way to memorize terminology and concepts. Nursing involves retaining a large amount of information, from medical terms to drug interactions, and Quizlet helps me break this information down into manageable pieces. I create flashcards for each course topic, and the repetition helps solidify my knowledge. The platform’s accessibility also allows me to study on the go, whether I’m commuting to work or waiting between classes. This flexibility has been crucial for balancing my work and academic life while still maintaining a strong grasp of the material. I also rely on academic databases like PubMed and CINAHL to access peer-reviewed articles and the latest research in nursing and medical science. These journals provide evidence-based information that is vital for staying up to date with the latest medical advancements and practices. Using these databases has enhanced my critical thinking skills and encouraged me to approach each topic analytically. By reading research studies, I can apply the findings to real-world patient care, making my education more relevant and practical. Moreover, understanding the research behind various medical practices allows me to explain procedures more effectively to patients, which is a vital part of patient education and advocacy. Websites such as Medscape and the Mayo Clinic have been invaluable for learning about specific diseases, treatments, and patient care. Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
As a student pursuing a nursing degree, mental health is incredibly important to me because it plays a crucial role in my academic success, emotional resilience, and overall well-being. Balancing the demands of school, work, and personal life can be overwhelming, and without strong mental health, it becomes even more challenging to perform well in these areas. I’ve come to understand that taking care of my mind is just as important as caring for my physical health. In nursing, especially, we are taught to prioritize the holistic well-being of patients, and I try to live by that philosophy, ensuring that I take care of my mental health first so that I can help others. In my personal life, mental health is a priority because it affects my ability to be present for the people I care about. Coming from a family with lower education and income, where mental health isn't often openly discussed, I've had to break the silence and be the advocate for conversations around it. I encourage my family members to talk about their emotions and stresses, knowing that sharing can relieve the pressure that so often builds when feelings are kept inside. In doing so, I’ve noticed a positive shift, especially in how my family now approaches mental health—they are more open to seeking help and practicing self-care. In my workplace at a male fertility clinic, I support patients who may be going through emotional challenges due to fertility issues. I make sure to listen actively, provide empathetic care, and offer them resources for counseling and mental health services when needed. Through these actions, I aim to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and make it a priority in every aspect of life—from school to work, home, and beyond. In my community, both at school and in the workplace, I advocate for mental health in various ways. As a medical assistant working in a male fertility clinic, I encounter patients who are often dealing with emotional challenges due to their fertility journeys. I support them by offering a listening ear, showing empathy, and directing them to mental health resources when appropriate. Through this role, I am reminded daily of the connection between mental and physical health, and I use this understanding to support patients holistically. Additionally, I talk openly with classmates about managing stress and coping with the pressures of academic life. By sharing my experiences, offering tips, and normalizing seeking help, I contribute to a culture that prioritizes mental health, making it a part of everyday conversation. Through these efforts, I aim to create a supportive environment where mental health is valued and advocated for at every level.

Being the first in my family to obtain a college degree is incredibly meaningful to me. It represents more than just personal achievement; it symbolizes breaking a cycle and creating new opportunities for myself and future generations in my family. Coming from a low-income family with limited educational opportunities, I’ve always known that pursuing higher education would be a significant challenge. However, it also meant that I had the chance to pave the way for others, proving that it’s possible to achieve something that seemed out of reach. To me, earning a college degree means rewriting the narrative of my family’s history. It’s about overcoming adversity, defying expectations, and showing that determination and hard work can lead to success. I know that my achievement is not only for me but for my family, who may not have had the same opportunities but have always supported me in their own ways. It’s a way to honor their sacrifices and demonstrate that education can open doors to a better future. I hope that by earning my degree, I can inspire younger family members to pursue their own dreams, knowing that it’s possible no matter where you come from. In college, I’m pursuing a degree in nursing. I chose nursing because it combines my passion for helping others with my desire to work in the medical field. Healthcare has always fascinated me, not only because of its scientific aspects but also because of the opportunity it provides to make a direct and positive impact on people’s lives. As a nurse, I will have the chance to care for individuals during their most vulnerable moments, offering not just medical treatment but also emotional support and compassion. Through my nursing education, I’m eager to learn about patient care, healthcare systems, and how to address the unique needs of diverse populations. Nursing offers a dynamic and rewarding career path that will allow me to continue growing and learning throughout my professional life. It’s a field that aligns perfectly with my passion for helping others, and I’m excited to be part of a profession that truly makes a difference. My long-term goals include becoming a highly skilled and compassionate nurse, with the possibility of specializing in areas like pediatric nursing or public health. I want to work in underserved communities, where access to healthcare is often limited. I know from personal experience how challenging it can be for families to navigate the healthcare system, especially when resources are scarce. I want to be an advocate for those who may not have the voice or knowledge to advocate for themselves. In the future, I also hope to continue my education and eventually pursue advanced nursing degrees. Whether that means becoming a nurse practitioner or a clinical nurse specialist, I want to continue expanding my skills and knowledge to provide the best care possible for my patients. Additionally, I aspire to be involved in healthcare policy or community outreach programs to address larger systemic issues that prevent people from receiving adequate healthcare. Ultimately, my long-term goal is to use my education and experience to make a lasting impact in the field of healthcare, improving the lives of individuals and communities. Being the first in my family to earn a degree is the first step in that journey, and I’m determined to continue pushing forward, knowing that my efforts will not only benefit me but also inspire and uplift those around me.

My inspiration to pursue a career in the medical field stems from a deep-rooted desire to help others and make a meaningful impact in people’s lives. Growing up, I always admired healthcare professionals for their ability to care for others, often in the most vulnerable moments of their lives. As I observed doctors, nurses, and medical staff working with compassion and skill, I knew that this was the type of work I wanted to dedicate my life to. However, my journey wasn’t a straightforward one. Coming from a low-income family, I didn’t have many examples of people pursuing higher education or careers in healthcare. But I felt a calling to follow this path, even if it meant overcoming obstacles along the way. The moment that solidified my decision to pursue nursing was when a family member experienced a medical crisis. Seeing the incredible care and attention they received during such a difficult time moved me deeply. It made me realize that nurses do much more than administer medicine or treatments—they provide comfort, reassurance, and hope. That experience inspired me to want to be a part of that kind of positive impact, to be someone who can offer support when it’s needed most. I chose nursing specifically because it allows me to be on the front lines of patient care. Nurses have the unique opportunity to interact with patients on a personal level, getting to know them and understanding their needs holistically. Nursing is about so much more than just treating a disease—it’s about caring for the whole person, including their emotional, psychological, and social well-being. This aligns perfectly with my passion for helping others and my desire to make a real difference in their lives. Through my nursing career, I plan to make a difference by providing compassionate, patient-centered care. I want to advocate for patients who may not have the resources or knowledge to advocate for themselves, ensuring they receive the best care possible. My personal experiences have taught me the importance of empathy, and I plan to carry that with me into every patient interaction. Additionally, I want to use my background and experiences to help underserved communities. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to access quality healthcare when resources are limited. As a nurse, I want to be a part of bridging that gap by working in community health or public health settings, where I can help those who need it most. By making healthcare accessible and compassionate for all, I hope to be a positive force in the lives of my patients.

Adversity has been a constant part of my life, especially growing up in a low-income family with limited educational opportunities. From a young age, I knew that my path wouldn’t be easy, but I also understood that I had the power to change my circumstances through hard work and determination. One of the most challenging times I faced was when I decided to pursue my nursing degree. Coming from a background where higher education wasn’t common, I didn’t have many role models to guide me through the process. The financial strain, the pressure to support my family, and the fear of failing all weighed heavily on me. During this time, I was juggling multiple responsibilities—working to make ends meet, helping out with family obligations, and dedicating myself to my studies. There were moments when I felt completely overwhelmed and questioned whether I could keep going. I experienced self-doubt, exhaustion, and stress, but I knew that quitting wasn’t an option. I had a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of others through nursing, and that passion kept me moving forward. To overcome this adversity, I leaned on several strategies. First, I learned to take things one step at a time. Rather than focusing on the entire journey, I broke down my goals into smaller, more manageable tasks. This helped me not feel overwhelmed by the big picture and allowed me to celebrate small victories along the way. I also sought out resources that could support me, whether it was financial aid, mentorship, or emotional support from friends and family. Having a support system was crucial in helping me stay grounded during tough times. This adversity has shaped me into a more resilient and determined individual. I’ve learned that challenges are a part of life, but they don’t have to define your path. Instead, they can strengthen you and push you toward your goals if you approach them with perseverance and a positive mindset. This experience has also deepened my empathy, especially as I pursue a career in nursing, where understanding others’ struggles is essential. My advice to anyone facing similar circumstances is to believe in yourself, even when it feels like the odds are against you. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Most importantly, take things one step at a time and never lose sight of your passion—it will be the driving force that helps you overcome any obstacle.

My mental health significantly impacts both my academic performance and personal life while I attend school. Being a nursing student requires a great deal of focus, dedication, and emotional energy, and the pressure to balance my studies with personal responsibilities can sometimes become overwhelming. When my mental health isn’t in a good place, it affects my ability to concentrate and retain information, leading to decreased productivity in my schoolwork. I’ve found that when I’m feeling anxious or stressed, my motivation to complete assignments or engage in coursework can diminish. This, in turn, can create a cycle of procrastination and more stress, which only exacerbates the challenges I’m already facing. In my personal life, mental health challenges can make it harder to be fully present with my loved ones or to enjoy the things I typically love, like reading or spending time with family. When I’m struggling emotionally, it can be difficult to find the energy to connect with others or even take care of myself. However, I’ve come to understand the importance of maintaining a balance between my academic life and my mental well-being, which is why I’ve made a conscious effort to prioritize my mental health as part of my overall success strategy. To manage this balance, I’ve developed several key steps to ensure that my mental health remains a priority. One of the most important things I do is practice self-care regularly. This can be as simple as taking a few moments each day to relax, meditate, or enjoy a book, which helps me recharge and clear my mind. I also prioritize spending time with family, as their support and love are essential to my well-being. Surrounding myself with positive and supportive people gives me the emotional boost I need to stay motivated, especially during difficult times. Another important step I take is setting realistic and achievable goals for myself. By breaking down my workload into manageable tasks and focusing on what I can control, I prevent myself from becoming overwhelmed. Additionally, I’ve learned the value of asking for help when needed. Whether it’s talking to a friend, classmate, or professional, seeking support helps me navigate difficult emotions and prevents my mental health from negatively affecting my progress in school and life. By prioritizing my mental health, I’m able to maintain a healthier balance between academics and personal life, allowing me to stay resilient, focused, and successful in my nursing journey.
    Women in Healthcare Scholarship
I chose to pursue a degree in healthcare, specifically in nursing, because it allows me to combine my passion for helping others with a career that makes a tangible difference in people’s lives. Coming from a background where I witnessed the challenges faced by my family and community, especially in navigating the complexities of the healthcare system, I felt a strong calling to be part of a profession that could provide both care and advocacy. Nursing, for me, represents an opportunity to bridge the gap between patients and the often overwhelming world of medicine, ensuring that every person receives compassionate and effective care, regardless of their background or circumstances. Growing up in a low-income family with limited educational opportunities, I saw how difficult it was for people around me to access proper healthcare. This experience shaped my understanding of how crucial healthcare is to every aspect of life and how much of an impact compassionate care can make. Nurses were often the ones who explained things clearly, offered support, and made the medical process less intimidating. Seeing the positive role that nurses played in the lives of my family and others inspired me to pursue nursing as a career where I could provide not only medical care but also emotional and educational support to those in need. As a woman in the healthcare field, I hope to make a positive impact by being a strong advocate for patients, especially those from underserved communities. I believe that nurses have a unique position in healthcare where they can truly connect with patients on a personal level. Through this connection, nurses can ensure that patients feel heard and understood, which is crucial for building trust and encouraging patients to take an active role in their health. I want to be a nurse who empowers patients to ask questions, understand their treatment options, and make informed decisions about their care. Additionally, I hope to contribute to the healthcare field by promoting greater diversity and inclusion. Women, particularly women of color and those from low-income backgrounds, often face barriers in accessing quality healthcare and representation within the medical field. As a woman entering healthcare, I hope to use my voice and my experiences to advocate for more inclusive policies and practices. I want to be a role model for other women who may feel that they do not belong in the healthcare field or that they cannot achieve their goals due to their background. By succeeding in my career and using my platform to uplift others, I hope to inspire and encourage the next generation of women in healthcare. My goal is to work in underserved communities where access to healthcare is limited, helping to address health disparities by providing quality, patient-centered care. I believe that healthcare should be a right, not a privilege, and I want to dedicate my career to ensuring that everyone has access to the care they deserve. Whether it’s through direct patient care, educating communities about preventive health measures, or advocating for healthcare reform, I am committed to making a lasting, positive impact on the health and well-being of those who need it most. In conclusion, as a woman in the healthcare field, I hope to empower patients, promote diversity and inclusion, and work towards closing the gaps in healthcare access and equity. Nursing is more than a career for me—it’s a way to honor my background, give back to my community, and ensure that every person I care for feels seen, heard, and valued.

I entered the nursing field because I’ve always felt a strong calling to help others, and nursing perfectly combines compassion, critical thinking, and a hands-on approach to making a real difference in people’s lives. Coming from a low-income family with limited access to education, I witnessed firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate the healthcare system when resources are scarce. These experiences sparked my desire to be someone who could not only provide care but also advocate for those who might otherwise be overlooked or misunderstood. Growing up, I saw my family struggle with health issues, often feeling overwhelmed by medical jargon and the lack of clear communication from healthcare providers. It was nurses who stood out as the ones who truly listened, offered explanations, and provided comfort in difficult times. They made a significant impact, not just in terms of medical care but in helping my family feel more informed and empowered during these moments. I realized then that nurses are the heart of healthcare, acting as advocates, educators, and healers all at once. This deeply inspired me to pursue nursing as a way to give back to my community and ensure that others receive the care and support they need, regardless of their background. My background, coming from a low-income family with limited educational opportunities, has shaped my perspective on the importance of accessible and compassionate healthcare. I understand how intimidating the healthcare system can be, especially for those who lack resources or knowledge, and I want to be someone who can help break down those barriers. This is what drives my passion for nursing—ensuring that every patient, regardless of their socioeconomic status, feels heard, understood, and respected. Throughout my education, I’ve found that nursing is the perfect blend of science and humanity. I’m fascinated by the complexity of the human body and how nursing requires critical thinking and problem-solving. But beyond that, I am deeply moved by the emotional connections that nurses form with their patients. Nurses are often the ones who spend the most time with patients, getting to know their fears, hopes, and needs. Being able to offer comfort and support in those moments is something I’m passionate about, and it’s what solidifies my commitment to this field. In the future, I see myself using my nursing degree not only to provide exceptional care but also to focus on patient education and advocacy. I believe that everyone, no matter their background, deserves to understand their health and have a say in their treatment. By helping patients navigate the complexities of their conditions and empowering them with knowledge, I hope to make a lasting difference. I’m especially interested in working in underserved communities, where I can advocate for those who might not have access to the best care or the knowledge to advocate for themselves. Ultimately, I chose nursing because I want to be the type of nurse who makes people feel safe, heard, and cared for, no matter their circumstances. My background has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a desire to fight for those who may not have the tools to fight for themselves. Nursing is more than just a profession for me—it’s a way to give back, to be a source of light in dark times, and to ensure that every person I care for feels valued. That’s what inspired me to pursue nursing, and it’s what will continue to motivate me throughout my career.

I chose to pursue a career in nursing because it offers the opportunity to make a real, tangible difference in people's lives. Nursing, to me, represents the perfect balance between science and compassion. It’s not just about the technical skills required to provide care, but also about the emotional connection and support that nurses offer their patients. I’ve always admired how nurses are at the forefront of patient care, often the ones who spend the most time with patients, understanding their needs, fears, and hopes. I want to be in a profession where I can be that source of comfort and care, helping people through some of their most vulnerable moments. The healthcare system can be complex, and nurses are crucial in bridging the gap between medical knowledge and patient understanding. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of patient advocacy, and nursing allows me to not only provide direct care but also ensure that patients’ voices are heard, their concerns are addressed, and they are empowered to make informed decisions about their health. This aligns with my belief in the importance of holistic care—looking beyond just the symptoms and treating the patient as a whole. Nursing also offers incredible versatility and opportunities for continuous learning. The field of nursing is vast, with countless specialties and pathways to explore. Whether it’s working in a hospital setting, in community health, or even advancing to nurse practitioner roles, I see nursing as a career that will challenge me, help me grow, and allow me to continually adapt to the evolving healthcare landscape. The idea of working in critical care, labor and delivery, or even as a nurse educator excites me, as it would give me the chance to contribute to different areas of healthcare while always prioritizing patient-centered care. In the future, I want to use my nursing degree to make a meaningful impact not only on the patients I care for but also within the healthcare system. Nursing is often the backbone of patient care, and I want to be part of a profession that advocates for better healthcare practices, policies, and patient outcomes. I am particularly interested in focusing on improving patient education and preventive care. By helping patients understand their health conditions and teaching them how to manage their health proactively, I hope to contribute to reducing hospital readmissions and improving quality of life for those in my care. Ultimately, I see nursing as more than just a job—it’s a calling. It requires resilience, empathy, and a commitment to lifelong learning, all of which I am ready to embrace. I look forward to the day when I can use my nursing degree to not only provide high-quality care but also inspire and uplift my patients, colleagues, and the broader community.
