16 years ago, I changed my citizenship. I flew across the Pacific Ocean to begin a new life full of cultural differences and opportunity. As I grew up, I made friends, excelled in school, and learned about my community. I felt like I belonged. Time moved on and I noticed subtle differences between my peers and me. They were not asked questions about their math and science homework problems as much I was. They were never asked where they were from. They were never asked how to say words in Chinese. I was. I review those memories and come to the conclusion that people are treated differently depending on their backgrounds. In middle school and high school that prominence in difference became more blurry. I continued my journey as a student but there was an itch that I couldn't reach. I wanted to look into topics regarding diversity and equity. In 2020 I joined the Equity club. After learning about the different social movements happening in my country, I decided that was an area of interest of mine. I wanted to make my school a more-welcoming place. My peers and I crafted presentations on equity issues such as microaggressions. We discussed books that challenged our history textbooks. We hosted a walkout protesting the anti-LGBTQ+ bills in the country. We encouraged gender neutral signage for restrooms. We raised awareness on what national days and months were important such as Black history month, AAPI month, National Coming Out Day, etc. We still have more progress to be made, but it is such a rewarding feeling knowing that members of my closely knitted community care about facilitating an equitable environment. As I became more involved with social issues and club activities, I became more confident in my career path. I hope to include diversity, equity, and inclusion in my studies. I also plan to incorporate multiculturalism. In elementary school, I was enrolled in the dual-language program which included the Spanish language being taught. I continued to expand my knowledge on the language through high school. I plan on minoring in Spanish because the language is widespread in my community. I love learning about different cultures and I hope to bridge my understanding with others. Changing the world is such a broad line. Change begins with one person and eventually spreading to another person, and eventually a community. With my experience of leading my school's Equity Club I have learned about community organization. As I further my education in college, I first will find a group that aligns with my values regarding diversity and multiculturalism. I will be able to learn about how others approach equity issues. Although this is in the future, I hope to organize marches, protests, or introduce equitable topics into conversations that lack them. Community is one of my top priorities. By finding the right ones, I am confident that I can initiate change, whether it is small or large.
