I am determined to continue my pursuit of higher education in the field of engineering, specifically in robotics. I want to understand the different aspects of constructing a technology such as its manufacturing, circuitry, and programming; thus, robotics. My goal is to be able to solve societal issues such as aid for the elderly by providing engineering solutions such as domestic robotics. As a low-income student, I plan to use the scholarships here to be a foundational step in my career.

    I am determined to continue my pursuit of higher education in the field of engineering, specifically in robotics. I want to understand the different aspects of constructing a technology such as its manufacturing, circuitry, and programming; therefore, robotics because it combines them all. My goal is to be able to solve societal issues such as lack of quality of life in developing countries, underrepresentation in minority groups, and lack of accessibility for the elderly or individuals with disability by providing engineering solutions such as domestic robots. As I looked to my future, I began wondering how the most prominent in everyday life, technology, is constructed. “How does a cell phone operate? How is a smartwatch made? What about the servers? Robots? What are the working mechanisms behind each of them?” I whispered to myself as my smile gleamed with a sparkle in my eyes. I soon found myself in circles that empowered me to step out of my comfort zone. One step led me to a summer internship at a tech company, opening a door to explore different departments. As I rotated through each department, I was given a research assignment on data related to a field I’m interested in, robotics. As I continued researching, my excitement mounted, and I couldn’t help but smile wider as I read more about AI, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. My nights were full of wonders about how I could integrate these software applications with mechanical products to make an impact in my community. As I look at those around me, I see how my parents’ hard work shaped my path and provided me with an education, and now I am driven to impact the futures of others as well through innovations. I reflect on families in developing countries who have an extremely low standard of living due to government failures and economic crises, while others are unable to complete simple tasks due to age and disabilities. I have experienced these hardships first-hand, so I envision low-income families using robots to assist with household chores, freeing up their time to pursue better job opportunities, and communities in developing countries using smart technologies to monitor air and water quality, improving citizens’ quality of life. With assistance from this scholarship, I plan to continue exploring the communities around me instead of worrying about my financial situation. For instance, I plan to take leadership roles in different clubs around the campus to bring fellow students together through social events and activities or participate in academic clubs to lift each other as we climb. Although I am not jumping in cap and gown to celebrate the end of my senior year as of yet, I am jumping towards this vision, a future of integrating technologies to help others.
