Selflessness, to me, means putting the needs of others before your own and choosing to help even when there is no expectation of recognition. It is not always about big actions, but about consistency, compassion, and a willingness to show up for others. Through my experiences volunteering and serving my community, I have learned that even small acts can have a meaningful impact. One of the most important ways I have demonstrated selflessness is by consistently donating blood through my school’s blood drives. While it may seem like a simple act, I understand that each donation has the potential to save lives. Donating blood requires time, commitment, and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone, but I have always believed that helping others in this way is worth it. Being recognized with a scholarship for my continued participation was an honor, but more importantly, it reinforced my belief that small, consistent actions can make a real difference in the lives of others. I have also embodied selflessness through volunteering with a youth basketball league. While working with younger players, I noticed that some lacked confidence and were hesitant to participate. Instead of focusing only on teaching skills, I made it a priority to encourage those who were struggling. I spent extra time helping them improve and reminding them that mistakes are part of the learning process. One player in particular stood out to me. He was quiet and unsure of himself at first, but with consistent encouragement, he began to gain confidence and participate more. Seeing his growth reminded me that supporting someone emotionally can be just as important as helping them physically. In addition, my experience volunteering at Home Instead Senior Care further shaped my understanding of selflessness. While shadowing caregivers and learning about their responsibilities, I saw how important it is to treat others with patience and respect. Many seniors rely on others not just for physical assistance, but for companionship and emotional support. This experience taught me that sometimes the most meaningful way to help someone is simply by being present and showing that you care. Through these experiences, I have come to understand that selflessness is not about recognition, but about impact. It is about consistently choosing to help others, even in small ways. Whether it is donating blood, mentoring young athletes, or learning how to support seniors, I strive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me. As I continue to grow, I plan to carry this mindset with me in everything I do. I want to continue serving others and finding ways to give back to my community. Selflessness is not just something I practice—it is a value that defines who I am and who I hope to become.

My hands on experience with artificial intelligence and machine learning is still developing, but it has already sparked a strong interest in how technology can be used to solve real-world problems. Through exploring AI tools, learning basic coding concepts, and observing how technology is applied in different environments, I have begun to understand both the potential and responsibility that comes with this field. One of the ways I have engaged with AI is by experimenting with AI-powered tools and platforms to better understand how they function. By using these tools, I have seen how machine learning models can analyze information, generate responses, and assist with decision-making. This experience made me curious about what happens behind the scenes, leading me to explore the fundamentals of coding and how algorithms are designed to learn from data. Although I have not yet created a full application, I have taken steps toward building the skills necessary to do so. I have spent time learning basic programming concepts and understanding how logic and problem-solving play a role in developing technology. This hands-on learning process has helped me realize that AI is not just about advanced systems, but about building solutions step by step. Even small projects and experiments have shown me how powerful simple ideas can become when combined with technology. My interest in AI is also connected to my experiences outside of technology. For example, through volunteering and observing how organizations operate, I have seen opportunities where AI could improve efficiency and support people more effectively. Whether it is helping businesses make better decisions or improving the way care is provided to individuals, I believe AI has the potential to create meaningful change when used responsibly. Looking ahead, I plan to continue developing my skills in programming and machine learning throughout my education. I want to gain a deeper understanding of how AI systems are built and how they can be applied to solve problems in areas such as healthcare, business, and community services. My goal is not only to create technology, but to create solutions that are practical, ethical, and accessible to a wide range of people. I also recognize that AI comes with important challenges, including fairness, accuracy, and ethical use. As I continue to learn, I want to be mindful of these issues and contribute to developing systems that are both effective and responsible. I believe that the future of AI depends not just on innovation, but on the values of the people creating it. Ultimately, I see myself making an impact in the field of AI by combining technical skills with a focus on helping others. Whether through developing applications, improving existing systems, or finding new ways to apply technology, I am motivated to be part of a field that has the potential to shape the future. My journey is just beginning, but I am committed to continuing to learn, grow, and contribute to meaningful advancements in artificial intelligence.

If I had to describe something “awkward” or different about me, I would say it is how I don’t always fit the expectations people have when they first see me. I am an African American student who enjoys fishing, hunting, and riding horses—interests that are not always commonly associated with someone who looks like me. At first, this made me feel out of place, but over time, I have come to see it as one of the things that makes me unique. Growing up, I developed a love for the outdoors. Whether it is spending time fishing, hunting with patience and focus, or riding horses, these activities have taught me discipline, responsibility, and respect for nature. However, I have often found myself in environments where I stand out because of my background. There have been moments where I felt like I did not fully belong or where people were surprised by my interests. At times, that felt awkward, like I had to explain myself or prove that I belonged there just as much as anyone else. Instead of letting those moments discourage me, I learned to embrace them. I realized that being different is not something to hide—it is something to be proud of. My interests have helped me build confidence in who I am and have taught me not to limit myself based on stereotypes or expectations. They remind me that I can define my own identity rather than letting others define it for me. This mindset has carried over into other areas of my life, including academics and athletics. As a student-athlete, I have learned to stay focused on my goals, even when I feel out of place or face challenges. Running track, balancing school, and preparing for a future in mechanical engineering all require the same level of confidence and determination that I developed by embracing what makes me different. What once felt “awkward” has become one of my greatest strengths. It has taught me how to adapt, how to stay true to myself, and how to be comfortable in spaces where I may not always fit the norm. It has also given me the ability to connect with a wide range of people and perspectives, which is something I value as I continue to grow. In the end, what makes me stand out is not just what I enjoy, but how I have learned to embrace it. I am proud of the person I am becoming—someone who is willing to be different, to challenge expectations, and to stay true to myself no matter the situation.

Diverse representation in STEM careers is important because it brings together different perspectives, experiences, and ways of thinking to solve complex problems. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics shape nearly every part of daily life, and when those fields include people from a wide range of backgrounds, the solutions they create are more innovative, practical, and inclusive. As an African American student pursuing a future in mechanical engineering, this topic is especially meaningful to me. In many academic and athletic environments, I have often been one of the few Black students in the room. While this has sometimes made me feel like I have to work harder to prove myself, it has also motivated me to stay focused, disciplined, and confident in my abilities. Over time, I have learned that my presence in these spaces matters, not just for me, but for others who may come after me. Representation is powerful because it shows what is possible. When students see professionals who look like them succeeding in STEM careers, it helps them believe that they can achieve those same goals. Without that visibility, many talented students may never even consider careers in engineering, science, or technology simply because they do not see themselves reflected in those fields. I want to help change that narrative. Diversity in STEM also leads to stronger problem-solving. People from different cultural and personal backgrounds often approach challenges in different ways. These differences can lead to more creative ideas and more effective solutions. For example, engineers are responsible for designing systems, machines, and technologies that serve diverse communities. If those designing the solutions come from similar backgrounds, important perspectives may be overlooked. Including voices from different races, cultures, and experiences helps ensure that innovations are designed for everyone. My experiences in track and academics have also shown me the value of persistence in spaces where you may feel outnumbered or overlooked. I have qualified for the state track meet three years in a row, and although I did not initially reach the podium, I continued to push myself until I improved my performance significantly. That same mindset applies to my academic journey and my future in engineering. I understand that success requires consistency, resilience, and belief in your own potential, even when challenges arise. In the future, I plan to use my degree in mechanical engineering not only to build a successful career but also to contribute to greater representation in STEM. I want to mentor younger students, especially African American students and other underrepresented groups, and encourage them to pursue careers in science and engineering. I believe that exposure, encouragement, and representation can change the direction of a student’s life. Ultimately, diverse representation in STEM is essential because it strengthens innovation, expands opportunity, and ensures that progress benefits everyone. I want to be part of that progress—not only as an engineer, but as someone who helps open doors for others.

Making an impact on the world, to me, means using my abilities, experiences, and opportunities to serve others and create positive change. I believe that true success is not measured only by personal achievements, but by how much you give back to your community and the people around you. Through my experiences in volunteering, athletics, and family life, I have developed a strong desire to live a life rooted in compassion, selflessness, and service. One of the ways I have already begun making an impact is through volunteering with Home Instead Senior Care. During my time there, I helped serve meals and spent time interacting with senior citizens. This experience showed me how meaningful simple acts of kindness can be. Many of the individuals I met valued conversation and companionship just as much as the services provided. It taught me that making an impact does not always require something big—it often starts with being present, listening, and showing genuine care for others. My family has also played a major role in shaping my commitment to service. As the son of a pastor, I have grown up understanding the importance of helping others and being involved in the community. Whether it is supporting church activities or traveling weekly to Magnolia, Mississippi, to be part of my father’s ministry, I have learned that serving others is a responsibility, not an option. I want to continue using my influence to inspire others, especially those who may feel overlooked or underrepresented, to believe in themselves and their potential. Ultimately, my goal is to live a life that reflects compassion and purpose. I want to use my education, experiences, and character to uplift others and contribute to the greater good. This scholarship would not only support my educational journey but also allow me to continue growing into someone who makes a meaningful and lasting impact on the world.
      “I Matter” Scholarship
One of the most meaningful times I helped someone in need was when my grandmother experienced a sudden health scare. She unexpectedly stopped breathing, and it was a moment that deeply impacted my entire family. Seeing someone I love in that condition made me realize how important it is to step up and be present during difficult times. After that incident, my grandmother needed extra care, encouragement, and support as she began to recover. I made it a priority to spend more time with her, helping in any way I could. Whether it was assisting with small tasks around the house, making sure she was comfortable, or simply sitting and talking with her, I wanted her to know she was not alone. I also encouraged her as she worked to regain her strength, reminding her to stay positive and take things one step at a time. This experience required patience and consistency. Recovery does not happen overnight, and there were moments when progress seemed slow. During those times, I learned the importance of being dependable and maintaining a positive attitude, even when things are uncertain. I also had to manage my time carefully, balancing school, track practice, and family responsibilities while still making sure I was there for her. In addition to helping my grandmother, I have also had the opportunity to serve seniors in my community through volunteering with Home Instead Senior Care. During my time there, I helped serve meals and spent time interacting with elderly individuals. Many of them appreciated simple conversations and companionship, which showed me that helping someone does not always require something big—sometimes it is just about being present and showing kindness. Through these experiences, I developed important skills such as empathy, communication, and responsibility. I learned how to recognize when someone needs support and how to respond in a way that makes a difference. More importantly, I learned that helping others is not just about what you do, but how you make them feel. Helping my grandmother and volunteering in my community has had a lasting impact on me. It has taught me the value of compassion and the importance of supporting others during their most vulnerable moments. These experiences have shaped my character and reinforced my desire to continue helping others in the future. In the end, being there for someone in need is one of the most meaningful things a person can do. It not only helps them through a difficult time, but it also builds strength, understanding, and purpose within yourself.

Overcoming Hardship Through Perseverance One of the most challenging hardships I have faced in my life has been coming so close to success yet falling just short. As a track athlete, I qualified for the state track meet three years in a row. Each time, I gave my best effort, but I finished just one place away from standing on the podium. That repeated outcome was difficult to accept. It tested my confidence, my motivation, and my belief in whether my hard work was truly enough. At first, I struggled mentally. It is not easy to put in hours of training and still feel like you are not reaching your full potential. However, I realized that if I wanted a different result, I needed to change my approach—not just physically, but mentally. I made the decision to turn my disappointment into motivation instead of letting it discourage me. One of the first strategies I used was setting more specific and measurable goals. Instead of focusing only on winning or placing, I began to focus on improving my times, refining my technique, and being consistent in practice. This allowed me to track my progress and stay motivated, even when results were not immediate. I also worked on strengthening my mental toughness. I trained myself to stay focused under pressure and to push through fatigue during races and practices. I reminded myself daily that growth takes time and that setbacks are part of the process. Developing this mindset helped me stay disciplined and confident, even when facing challenges. In addition, I sought out better competition and training opportunities. Over the summer, I joined a traveling track team where I was able to compete against stronger athletes and learn from different coaching styles. This experience pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me improve my performance. As a result, I began consistently placing first in the 300-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash, and second in the 200-meter dash. Time management and consistency were also key techniques in overcoming this hardship. Balancing academics, athletics, and family responsibilities required me to stay organized and committed. I made sure to give my best effort in every practice, knowing that small improvements each day would lead to greater results over time. Through this experience, I learned that hardship is not something to fear—it is something that shapes you. Falling short taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of believing in myself even when success is not immediate. It showed me that true achievement is not just about the outcome, but about the growth that happens along the way. In the end, overcoming this challenge was not just about improving as an athlete, but about becoming stronger mentally and emotionally. The lessons I learned will stay with me far beyond the track, helping me face future obstacles with confidence and determination.

Since I was in my mother's womb, I could hear the pastor preach and my father became a pastor when I was 10 years old. That was a challenge for all of us because we need there would be challenges. We knew we would have to make sacrifices when it pertained to school events, birthday parties and sports at times. God has blessed us so much that none of us can complain. We travel to my dad's church in Magnolia, MS every Saturday, which is 2 1/2 hours away from our home. We drop off food to those less fortunate, visit the sick and my dad preaches there at his church. We also have a church nearby that we attend on Sundays. My father has taught me so much about being a man, being humble and remembering who I am regardless of what others want me to do; I have stood firm on that. I have never been the kind of person to follow the crowd. I pray before I make decisions and seek counsel from my parents. My mom is one of the sweetest people that you will ever meet. She is always there when I need a softer ear. She stands behind my dad %100, and I love the way she takes younger girls in from the church. She teaches them in a way that is not embarrassing or demeaning. My sister loves to hang out with my mom, and I love their relationship. We have really been blessed with wonderful parents, and I thank God every day for what I have. I know there are some that did not have that opportunity, and I do not take that likely. I am so blessed! Outside of church, I really enjoy basketball and track. It's something about being a part of a team and working together that I really enjoy. The basketball season ended last month, and that was one of the hardest things I have faced. I had to say farewell to a coach who has been there since middle school. Track is my passion, and I pray this season will be a great one. My parents are always there to cheer me on. As of now, I plan to become a Mechanical Engineer, but who knows what God has in store for me. I worked hard in high school, and I pray to make my parents proud. I plan to stay true to who I am and follow God's path in whatever direction I take. If I receive this scholarship, I guarantee that I will pursue my degree and never stray from God. The word is in me, and it will never leave.
