Dr. Michael Paglia Scholarship
From the moment I stepped into the role of a Peer Support Specialist and Community Health Worker, I knew that healthcare was my calling. My passion for this field stems from a lifelong commitment to uplifting others—a commitment shaped by my upbringing, personal experiences, and the unwavering example set by my mother. Raised in a single-parent household alongside my four sisters and brother, I witnessed firsthand the power of resilience and compassion. My mother, despite the challenges of raising a large family on her own, always found time to encourage me to do my best and instilled in me the value of service to others.
That early foundation inspired my journey into community health, where I have rapidly advanced since the moment I stepped into the field. The work I do every day—guiding individuals through personal struggles, advocating for underserved communities, and ensuring access to essential health services—solidifies my belief that healthcare is more than treatment; it is empowerment. Whether helping individuals navigate mental health challenges, offering peer support to those in recovery, or leading outreach programs to connect families with health resources, I see every interaction as an opportunity to change lives. My desire to serve is deeply rooted in the understanding that healing extends beyond physical well-being—it is emotional, mental, and social.
This understanding is why I have chosen to further my education in behavioral science and human services. With a degree in this field, I will deepen my knowledge of community-based healthcare solutions and develop effective, sustainable programs that address health disparities. Education will equip me with the expertise to design interventions that tackle systemic issues preventing individuals from receiving the support they need. Beyond personal career growth, my long-term goal is to redefine healthcare accessibility for communities that have historically been overlooked.
In the future, I aim to expand peer support initiatives, ensuring that underserved individuals not only receive healthcare assistance but also guidance tailored to their personal experiences. I hope to develop mentorship programs, advocate for policies that improve mental health services, and create resource hubs that connect individuals to holistic care options. My vision is to integrate mental health, preventative care, and wellness education into the community health framework—ensuring that every person, regardless of background, receives the support they need to thrive.
Receiving the Dr. Michael Paglia Scholarship would not only alleviate financial barriers but also provide the opportunity to expand the reach of my humanitarian work. I am driven by ambition, fueled by the lessons of perseverance my mother taught me, and determined to be an agent of change in the healthcare system. Through education, advocacy, and hands-on service, I will continue to elevate the standard of care—ensuring that healthcare is not just a profession, but a movement toward equity, dignity, and empowerment.
Michael Pride, Jr/ProjectEX Memorial Scholarship
Service has always been the foundation of my life's work. As a Peer Support Specialist and Community Health Worker, I am deeply committed to humanitarian efforts that bring meaningful change to individuals in need. My role involves providing emotional and practical support to those facing challenges, whether it's substance abuse recovery, mental health struggles, or community disparities. Every day, I work closely with individuals who need guidance, helping them navigate their circumstances and empowering them to rebuild their lives with confidence. My commitment to service is not just a job—it is a calling, shaped by my upbringing and my desire to uplift others.
Growing up in a single-parent household, I witnessed firsthand the importance of having a strong support system. My mother, raising me and my five siblings alone, modeled compassion and resilience. She encouraged me to approach every challenge with determination and to always extend a hand to those in need. Her values have shaped the way I engage with my community, ensuring that I approach my work with empathy and an unyielding drive to make a difference.
One of the most impactful humanitarian acts I currently engage in is mentoring individuals who are striving to overcome personal obstacles. Whether it is someone battling addiction or a young person struggling to find their path, I make it my mission to offer guidance, resources, and hope. I believe that lifting others up is the greatest form of leadership, and I carry that belief into every interaction. In my role, I advocate for underserved communities, ensuring they have access to mental health support, educational resources, and employment opportunities.
Additionally, my work extends beyond one-on-one support. I actively participate in community outreach programs, organizing events that educate individuals on mental health awareness, financial literacy, and career development. By facilitating these initiatives, I help empower people to take control of their future, knowing that they have the support they need. Seeing individuals transform their lives through the encouragement and resources I provide is incredibly fulfilling—it reassures me that service is a powerful force for change.
My ambitions in education will allow me to expand the impact I have on my community. As I continue my studies in behavioral science and human services, I aim to deepen my knowledge and refine my skills to be an even stronger advocate for those in need. Education will equip me with advanced tools to create more effective intervention strategies and implement programs that reach a broader audience. By furthering my expertise, I will be able to influence policy changes and develop structured initiatives that address systemic issues affecting underserved populations.
Receiving this scholarship would be a significant step in my journey toward transforming lives. With financial support, I can focus on refining my ability to develop sustainable solutions that enhance community well-being. The scholarship would not only assist me academically but also allow me to devote more energy toward mentoring, organizing outreach programs, and expanding access to vital resources for those in need.
At my core, I believe that true success is measured by the impact we have on others. My commitment to humanitarian service will remain unwavering, and through education, I will ensure that my ability to uplift and empower communities continues to grow. I am dedicated to being the bridge between struggle and success, helping individuals find hope, stability, and a pathway toward a better future.
Marie J. Lamerique Scholarship for Aspiring Scholars
From an early age, I understood the significance of resilience, determination, and unwavering support. These qualities were instilled in me by my mother—a true angel in my life. When my parents separated, she took on the monumental task of raising me, along with my four sisters and one brother, all on her own. Despite the challenges of being a single mother, she ensured I never felt alone. She always made time for me, encouraged me to excel in everything I pursued, and instilled in me a deep sense of purpose. Her strength and commitment shaped the foundation of my values, fueling my drive to succeed and make a meaningful impact in my community.
Growing up in a single-parent household meant facing both financial and emotional challenges. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for us, balancing the weight of financial pressures with her unwavering emotional support. Witnessing her sacrifices taught me the importance of hard work and perseverance. I saw firsthand that success is built on effort, consistency, and the willingness to push forward, no matter the obstacles. Instead of allowing our circumstances to define us, my mother ensured that each of her children understood the power of ambition and self-discipline.
Her encouragement shaped the trajectory of my career, giving me the mindset to always strive for excellence. Today, I am a Peer Support Specialist and Community Health Worker, quickly advancing in my field since day one. I have moved up faster than anyone else in my company—not just because of my dedication, but because of the values my mother instilled in me. She taught me that helping others is one of the highest forms of success, and that leadership is built on service. These principles have guided me throughout my professional journey, allowing me to connect deeply with the individuals I serve, offering both compassion and practical support.
My identity as an African American, half-Jamaican, and half-Muslim man further enriches my perspective and understanding. It allows me to navigate diverse communities, empathize with different struggles, and approach challenges with a broad and inclusive mindset. My background has given me the ability to see the world through multiple lenses, teaching me the importance of unity, perseverance, and cultural awareness. Whether advocating for equity, promoting wellness, or providing critical support to individuals in need, I carry forward the lessons learned in my household—especially the belief that everyone deserves encouragement and opportunity.
More than just a profession, my work reflects the values of community empowerment and social impact. It is my mission to help others, just as my mother once helped me by providing stability and guidance despite the challenges of single-parenthood. As I continue to rise in my career, I see it not just as an individual achievement, but as a collective triumph—honoring my mother’s sacrifices, my family’s perseverance, and the broader community that shaped me.
Looking ahead, my ambitions extend beyond personal success. I want to continue growing within my field while uplifting those around me, ensuring that communities receive the peer support and resources they need to thrive. My rapid advancement within my company is a testament to my work ethic, but I see it as just the beginning. I envision leading initiatives that enhance community health services, mentoring individuals facing adversity, and creating programs that empower those who may feel overlooked by society.
If I were awarded this scholarship, it would be more than financial assistance—it would be a recognition of the values I hold dear: perseverance, service, and community empowerment. It would allow me to further my mission of making a difference in the lives of others, just as my mother made a difference in mine. Growing up in a single-parent household didn’t limit me; it strengthened me, challenged me, and gave me the motivation to always strive for more.
My story is one of resilience and ambition, and through my work, I hope to inspire others to embrace their challenges as steppingstones to success. A single-parent household may come with hardships, but it also fosters independence, determination, and an unbreakable sense of purpose. Because of my mother’s love and guidance, I have become the man I am today—someone committed to making a lasting impact in the world.
