Bio

I am a first-generation college graduate. Before I was a marketer, nonprofit professional, or aspiring thought leader, I was a young, single mom who was too young and too scared. My first battles were not with board directors or vendors but with postpartum depression and poverty. It took years of hard work and sacrifice to earn a position where I could have a voice for those overlooked and unseen. My greatest ambition is to help nonprofits tell their stories more effectively, raising more money and helping more people. Great storytelling humanizes the marginalized and addresses complex problems ranging from crisis relief to homelessness, animal care, and education. Nonprofits break down enormous, systemic issues and have a direct, innovative impact on individual lives. How can anyone not be inspired to be a part of such work? As a working mother, there are opportunities for advancement I simply cannot pursue without an advanced degree. That's why I'm working on my Master's in Nonprofit Management. With your help, I will be a leader in the next generation of nonprofit voices that change the world for the better.

John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
As a young fighter pilot, John Young showed enormous courage. I cannot imagine the terror of watching Japanese soldiers emerge from cloud banks in a previously unimaginable attack unlike anything in human history. It is stories like this that keep our culture alive by remembering the everyday courage of a generation who fought oppression and changed the world. While I will never be an aerospace engineer or a fighter pilot, I strive to do my own small part to inspire people to be the best versions of themselves. Hello. I am Whitney Springston and I am working towards a Master's in Philanthropy and Development. I am part of a new(ish) generation of nonprofit professionals who take on some of humanity's greatest challenges with innovation, courage, and resilience. I have spent more than 15 years as a working mother. I overcame poverty and adversity to become a first-generation college graduate. Little did I know that those seemingly insurmountable trials were, in fact, a clever shortcut (albeit a treacherous, weed-infested one) leading me to a career where I could truly make a difference. My passion for storytelling and the hope of making a difference fuel my awe for donors—those remarkable souls who give selflessly and mend the world's woes one act of generosity at a time. Today, I am beginning to make waves by collaborating with some of the industry's top communications experts and have been invited to share some of my findings from my graduate program at conferences where I can help other nonprofit leaders find new ways to excel. Still, I need your help. My husband and I are both nonprofit employees, which means we are rich in joy and compassion but not so much in the kind of riches that pay for tuition. As I continue to grow in my career, I would eventually like to move into consulting nonprofits to improve how they communicate with their donors. This degree program would help me create an opportunity to do so. This scholarship means that I can pursue my education now rather than wait and hope a better time comes along. Without financial aid, my educational opportunities are virtually nonexistent. My goal is simple: change the world. While I may never reach that distant star, John Young knew better than anyone that if you shoot for the moon, you might just wind up among the stars. Thank you for considering my application.

My educational journey has been anything, but traditional. Once upon a time (because shouldn’t all great stories begin there), I dreamed of changing the world. I saw a future where, as a journalist, I’d square my shoulders and go running into the proverbial trenches of humanity's greatest challenges with a microphone in hand, ready to tell stories that would change the world. That is, until the world punched me back. I found myself as a young mom feeling lost and shattered. Suddenly, my brave facade didn't seem so sturdy; my shoulders not quite so square. I was a young mom with two babies wondering how I would ever finish a degree. Against all odds, I triumphed. Fueled by a potent blend of black coffee and sheer tenacity, I not only earned that degree but have spent 15 years paving a career path that led me right back to where I began: telling stories that change the world... through nonprofit communications. Adversity, it turns out, sowed seeds of empathy and compassion within me, which now oozes through everything I do. My burning passion for storytelling and the audacious hope of making a difference in this world fuel have pushed me to find a way forward as a mother and a professional trying to set an example for my children. My days are full of balancing, organizing, and prioritizing. From meal planning to helping with homework to prepping for board meetings and overseeing multi-year campaigns, the challenges of motherhood are also the skills that make me unstoppable. Once again, I am a working mom and a college student. I am working hard to set an example for my children that they can do anything they put their minds to. Still, I recognize that I am one of the lucky ones. Many women lack the loving support system with which I have been blessed to continue to pursue my dreams while being a mother. That is why I need your help. While my dream of running fearlessly into the fray as a journalist never came true, the deep love of people that motivated it has brought me to a place where I am able to help nonprofits make a real difference in their missions. My goal has changed from advocating for truth as a journalist to advocating for marginalized and underserved as a nonprofit leader. This is where YOU come into the story. My husband and I are both nonprofit employees which means we are rich in joy and compassion, but not so much in the kind of riches that pay for tuition. I need to finish my education so that I'll have the tools to affect meaningful change. The challenges of motherhood have taken me from a scared young mom on WIC to a first generation to college graduate. It was those early trials that gave me the steel I needed to succeed where others have failed. When failure is not an option, you tend to just keep getting up and trying again. With your help, I can give voice to those who just need an opportunity to succeed, as I once did. This scholarship means that I could pursue my education now, rather than wait and hope a better time comes along. Without financial aid, my educational opportunities are virtually nonexistent. Please consider me for this scholarship. I will make you proud. With your help, in 20 years, you will say, "Once upon a time, she came to us—a student with the scholarship we gave her—and she found a way to change the world."

Legacy of Dreams: A Journey Beyond the First Step As I stepped onto the graduation stage, diploma in hand, a kaleidoscope of emotions swirled within me. Glancing at my family, I caught the eyes of my daughters, their faces a mirror of awe and wonder, seated on their father's lap. In that defining moment, their future, once an abstract canvas, began to take on vibrant hues of hope and possibility. My graduation was more than a personal achievement; it was the fulfillment of a dream deferred – a dream that once belonged to my mother. My mother, whose aspirations of higher education were set aside, poured her hopes into my journey. Each step I took toward my academic goals echoed the silent steps she had yearned to take. Her sacrifices were the invisible wings that carried me through every challenge, every setback. The day I graduated, it wasn't just my name being called; it was a tribute to the dream she had lovingly passed down to me. Navigating the terrain of a first-generation student was riddled with obstacles and moments of stark realization. One such moment was a confrontation with the financial aid office during my pregnancy. Their dismissive words, "You made your bed; now lie in it," were a cold splash of reality on the struggles non-traditional students like me face. This experience, while harsh, forged in me a resolve to advocate for myself, a resolve that my mother, in her times, wasn't able to exercise. Juggling the roles of a mother, a student, and a professional, I learned to weave a tapestry of resilience and determination. My journey through graduate school, powered by years of experience in the nonprofit sector, was not just an academic pursuit; it was a mission to give practical life to theories, to blend lived experience with learned knowledge. Preparing for graduate school was an endeavor marked by strategic planning. Seeking scholarships and managing finances were steps towards a future of empowerment, not just for me but also for my daughter, who stands on the threshold of her college journey in 2025- a journey that I can help her take so that she does not face the same challenges that I faced. This scholarship represents more than financial support; it embodies the opportunity to fulfill my aspirations in consulting and to extend my mother's legacy of resilience and determination. My educational journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring spirit of mentorship. Through my experiences, I have begun mentoring young women in my community, lighting their paths with the lessons from my journey. As I stand poised to embrace the opportunities of graduate school, I commit to using this scholarship to honor the sacrifices made by my mother to help pave a path for myself and my children. This journey is a bridge that connects past sacrifices to future triumphs, a bridge of dreams realized and legacies continued. In pursuing higher education, I am not merely shattering a glass ceiling; I am fulfilling a legacy of dreams, aspirations, and empowerment. It's a journey that honors my mother's sacrifices, inspires my daughters, and impacts my community. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to continue this journey, weaving a tapestry of education, opportunity, and empowerment for generations to come.

It was late at night, and the road ahead seemed to blur as tears welled up in my eyes. Behind the wheel, I sobbed uncontrollably, feeling like I couldn't bear the thought of going back home. In that haunting moment, a terrifying idea crossed my mind: "Maybe if I just drive into a tree, it'll be over, and I won't have to be a burden to anyone anymore." The chilling allure of that thought shook me to my core. I'm Whitney, a working mother in my thirties, deeply devoted to both my family and my work. For most of the past decade, I've served as the Director of Marketing and Communications at a youth mental health organization. Through this role, I've not only raised over a million dollars but have also played a pivotal part in raising millions more. Notably, I made significant contributions to a $36M capital campaign that led to the establishment of my state's first psychiatric residential treatment facility—an endeavor that couldn't have come sooner, given the alarming revelation that suicide has become the leading cause of death among teenagers in my state. Despite my parents' unwavering efforts to protect my brothers and me, my older brother faced immense challenges. He grappled with unresolved trauma, leading to periods of incarceration during his teenage years. Eventually, he fell into the dark grip of methamphetamine addiction—a chapter that would haunt him for over 15 years. My brother's struggles didn't just affect him; they cast a shadow over our entire family. His behavior often exceeded my parents' abilities to help him. Despite their unwavering efforts, they were left feeling helpless. It took years for the trauma he'd experienced to come to light so he could get the help he needed. If it weren't for my mother, my own journey might have taken a darker path. At the age of 16, I found myself in a mental health crisis. In a desperate plea for help, I ran away from home. It was my mother who answered this cry by arranging therapy sessions with a psychiatrist. Therapy equipped me with invaluable skills to navigate the storm of intense emotions, recognize the warning signs of anxiety and depression, reframe conflicts, and manage my emotions. In my work, my firsthand experiences with trauma and mental health have shattered barriers with our donor base, positioning my organization as a leader in our state. My ability to empathize with the youth we serve led me to create impactful communication materials for our capital campaign. These early trials now empower me to share our stories in a way that celebrates the resilience of our youth. This is why I am committed to pursuing a Master's Degree in Philanthropy and Development. My aspiration is to assist non-profit organizations across the nation in raising awareness about mental health. No child should ever feel so isolated that ending their life seems like the only way out. With my personal experiences and skills, I believe I can help non-profits save countless young lives. This scholarship represents more than financial assistance; it symbolizes my ongoing dedication to breaking the cycle of trauma and mental illness, not only within my family but also throughout my community. Your support will enable me to teach my children that, like any other aspect of health, mental well-being requires forethought, effort, and support. Thank you for considering my application and recognizing the critical importance of mental health advocacy. Together, we can make an impact in raising awareness, reducing stigma, and providing hope for those who need it most.

I grew up in a great family, but even great families can be torn apart. As the old Loretta Lynn song says, “We were poor, but we had love…” My brother was the eldest of us three. He was charming, funny, and smiled easily. Mom worked days and took care of us. Dad worked all the time and took care of her. My younger brother and I spent summer days chasing fireflies, never knowing we went without. When my older brother was about 12, something happened. After that, the bubble I found myself living in popped, and the family I knew changed. By the time he hit high school, holes were punched in the walls. My mother’s wallet was stolen. I was a kid. I didn’t know that my brother’s violent mood swings were caused by bipolar disorder. When he and I got into a shouting match, and I was thrown across a room, I didn’t understand that it was called “mental illness.” I don’t remember how many times my brother went to jail before he found methamphetamines. All I knew was that I spent nights listening to my mother cry and wondering what she’d done wrong. It was many years before we learned that someone had hurt my brother. That all his struggles were the result of unresolved trauma. As I grew up, all the fear and anger transformed itself into anxiety and depression. Once a little girl who walked on eggshells so as not to cause a scene, I spent much of my life in fear of upsetting people or letting them down. I've battled depression my entire adult life. Perhaps that's why I’ve spent so much of my career in the mental health industry. I work in a nonprofit that helps kids and families experiencing mental health challenges as a result of trauma. My role is to tell their stories and help demystify the stigmatized world of mental health. My words are the bridge that brings our donors forward so that families from all income levels can afford the help they need before it's too late. In my work, we serve teens with significant mental health needs. I always say that my brother—who, by the grace of God, is well today with the right medications and ongoing therapy—was just a kid who needed help. Mental health was a language we didn’t know how to speak, and he got lost in translation for a while. Now he’s been found. Reading Trevor’s story was heartbreaking—another beautiful boy lost to a faceless enemy called mental illness. It is because of stories like Trevor’s that I am so passionate about human services nonprofits, and it is for them that I am pursuing my master’s degree in philanthropy and development. My own struggles with mental health would make me a terrible therapist—I get too attached and too invested. My role is to share the stories with people who have the means to help us do something about it. To share the stories of our young people not to create pity but to highlight the strength and courage it takes to seek help and to shed the light of hope on a world gone dark. If you choose me for this scholarship, know that you are choosing a candidate who wants to help and be there for the next young person who is struggling as we continue the fight to destigmatize mental health so that people can communicate with words instead of irreversible actions.

There was no victory in sight. I had only two choices: Give up or find a way to redefine victory. Against all odds, I triumphed. Fueled by a potent blend of black coffee and sheer tenacity, I not only earned that degree but have spent 13 years paving a career path that led me right back to where I began– telling stories that change the world… through philanthropy and development in nonprofits. Little did I know that those seemingly insurmountable trials that threatened to crush my dreams were, in fact, a clever shortcut (albeit a treacherous, weed-infested one) leading me to my true calling: the art of fundraising. Adversity, it turns out, sowed seeds of empathy and compassion within me, which now ooze through every donor newsletter, appeal, impact report, and fundraising campaign I craft. My burning passion for storytelling and the audacious hope of making a difference in this world fuel my unadulterated awe for those remarkable souls—donors—who embody the very essence of human goodness, giving selflessly and mending the world's woes one act of generosity at a time. This is where YOU come into the story. While my dream of running fearlessly into the fray as a journalist never came true, the deep love of people that motivated it has brought me to a place where I am able to help nonprofits make a real difference in their missions. I am currently earning an M.A. in Development and Philanthropy in the hope that I can serve my community by helping build stronger nonprofits. Still, I need your help. To me, success looks like using the challenges I've faced to help forge a clearer path for the person behind me. With this scholarship, I can continue to pursue my master's degree, which will, in turn help me serve more nonprofits who will serve more people. My husband and I are both nonprofit employees, which means we are rich in joy and compassion but not so much in the kind of riches that pay for tuition. As I continue to grow in my career, I would eventually like to move into consulting nonprofits to improve how they communicate with their donors. All too often, I get communications from great nonprofits doing amazing work in the community that lack clear storytelling or a call to action. I want to change that. This scholarship would help me create an opportunity to do so. This scholarship means that I can pursue my education now rather than wait and hope a better time comes along. Without financial aid, my educational opportunities are virtually nonexistent. Please consider me for the Redefining Victory Scholarship program. I will make you proud. During my senior year, I trudged across campus to an old building for classes. Cold days drained my hope. With a heavy backpack, I rushed between work and classes, unaware of my silent battle with postpartum depression. One incident changed everything. After the birth of my second daughter, I found myself overwhelmed and lost. I believed that I was a failure and my children deserved better. I reached a point where I genuinely considered ending my life. It was during this dark period that the incident with my overloaded backpack occurred. One day, as I hurriedly made my way to class, running late from work, the weight of my burdens became too much for my backpack to handle. In an instant, the straps gave in, and my belongings scattered across the ground. Completely overwhelmed and on the verge of tears, I felt like giving up. It was at that moment that Brittany, an acquaintance who navigated the campus in a wheelchair due to Spina Bifida, approached me. Perhaps she saw the despair in my eyes because she rolled up to me and said, "My wheelchair got stuck going up that damned hill in the rain, and I've only got one leg. But I still look like I'm having a better day than you." Her words pierced through the fog of my depression, shaking me out of my self-destructive thoughts. In that unexpected encounter, I found a glimmer of hope and a much-needed dose of perspective. Over lunch, Brittany and I opened up about our respective challenges in school. It was during this conversation that she revealed her mother's advice: to prioritize wellness while pursuing an education. From that day forward, I began consciously managing my personal wellness throughout my college journey. I started dedicating 10 minutes each morning to quiet meditation, reflecting on the reasons behind my hard work and finding gratitude amidst the struggles. Miraculously, my grades started to improve, and I developed a more positive outlook. Attending class became a privilege rather than a burden. Now, as I prepare to return to academia after spending over a decade in the workforce, I carry the invaluable lessons I learned from that encounter with Brittany. As a working mother of three, I understand the critical importance of prioritizing my personal wellness. Alongside my daily meditation practice, I make time for regular exercise and maintain a healthy diet. These habits support my well-being and enable me to approach my studies with clarity and resilience. I share this deeply personal story to emphasize the transformative power of prioritizing personal wellness, especially during the challenging journey of pursuing higher education. It is a reminder that even in our darkest moments, hope can find us, and with the right support and self-care, we can overcome the most overwhelming obstacles. In applying for the Wellness Warriors Scholarship, I embody the spirit of perseverance and resilience. I have experienced firsthand the depths of despair and the healing potential of prioritizing wellness. The boundless realm of knowledge and personal growth, combined with the vibrant tapestry of experiences, is what truly ignites my spirit within the realm of academia. However, I am keenly aware that this exciting path is not devoid of challenges. During my junior year, as an undergraduate student, I encountered a profound struggle that tested my mental health—postpartum depression. The impact was indescribable, as I found myself engulfed in a deep darkness, believing that my children would be better off without me, longing for a happiness that seemed elusive. Recognizing the depths of my despair as depression was a turning point, leading me to embark on a journey of self-discovery and wellness. Amidst the academic demands and personal responsibilities, I embarked on a mission to nurture my mind, body, and soul, forging a path toward holistic well-being. To maintain a healthy mind, I incorporated meditation into my daily routine, dedicating twenty precious minutes to quiet introspection. I also developed a practice of gratitude, intentionally shifting my focus from complaints to reflections on the blessings in my life. While nurturing my mind, I understood the significance of tending to my physical well-being. Regular exercise became an integral part of my routine, enabling me to rejuvenate and replenish my energy. Moreover, I recognized the importance of tending to my soul, nourishing the essence that makes me who I am. Engaging in activities that brought me joy and fulfillment became essential. Writing, painting, and immersing myself in literature became sources of solace and creative expression. Connecting with loved ones and seeking support from my community became lifelines that rejuvenated my spirit and provided the strength to overcome adversity. Maintaining a healthy mind, body, and soul amidst the challenges of college has been instrumental in my journey as a student. It has allowed me to navigate the complexities of coursework, deadlines, and personal responsibilities with resilience and grace. Once upon a time (because shouldn’t all great stories begin there), I was a young girl who dreamed of changing the world. I saw a future where, as a journalist, I’d square my shoulders and go running into the proverbial trenches of humanity's greatest challenges with a microphone in hand, ready to tell stories that would change the world. That is until the world punched me back. I found myself as a young woman feeling lost and shattered after a traumatic incident during my college years. Suddenly, my brave facade didn't seem so sturdy; my shoulders were not quite so square. Once upon a time, I was a young mom with two babies wondering how I would ever finish a degree. Against all odds, I triumphed. Fueled by a potent blend of black coffee and sheer tenacity, I not only earned that degree but have spent 13 years paving a career path that led me right back to where I began– telling stories that change the world… through philanthropy and development. Earning an M.A. in Development and Philanthropy will help me continue on my quest. While my dream of running fearlessly into the fray as a journalist never came true, the deep love of people that motivated it has brought me to a place where I am able to help nonprofits make a real difference in their missions. The M.A. will help me fill gaps in my knowledge, especially around Board Management, Planned Giving, and Major Gift Stewardship. Still, I need your help. My husband and I are both nonprofit employees, which means we are rich in joy and compassion, but not so much in the kind of riches that pay for tuition. As I continue to grow in my career, I would eventually like to move into consulting nonprofits to improve how they communicate with their donors. I want to change that. This degree program would help me create an opportunity to do so. This scholarship means that I could pursue my education now rather than wait and hope a better time comes along. Without financial aid, my educational opportunities are virtually nonexistent. Please consider me for the Barbara J Devaney Memorial Scholarship program. I will make you proud. With your help, in 20 years, you will say, "Once upon a time, she came to us—a student with the scholarship we gave her—and she found a way to change the world." Together, we will create a story worth telling, a legacy of compassion and progress that will inspire generations to come. Thank you for considering my application.
