I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in February of last year and my entire journey of getting there was rough. The various symptoms I was experiencing heavily impacted my health and well-being but, because I did not understand what was going on with my body I struggled to fix it. Finally, after years of struggling, I sought medical attention, but the initial appointment really discouraged me. To start, the doctor’s bedside manner wasn’t the best. It felt like they were not truly listening or taking into account the symptoms I was experiencing. When speaking to me and my parents, they were passive-aggressive, which made the experience even more uncomfortable. On top of that, the appointment felt rushed—they heard what I had to say, sent me for blood work, and sent me home. I was put off by the entire experience and didn’t want to continue seeking care. However, I was so fed up with my health that I pushed forward, and I’m very grateful that I did. Now, through understanding what is going on with my body, I’m in a much better position to improve my health—and I have To be able to understand the things happening in your body so that you can maintain it is something a lot of people do not get. After this experience, I realized that I am fortunate to have a chance of being healthy. However, I also realized that a lot of people have uncomfortable experiences when seeking medical attention which sometimes creates a fear and leads them to not address future issues. Someone should walk out of their appointment feeling optimistic about getting better, not the way I did after my initial appointment. My goal is to change this because everyone deserves to be healthy and to be treated well during their care. Being diagnosed really showed me the importance of diagnostic care and being comfortable while receiving it. I strive to provide people comfort, during an obviously nerve-racking situation, but also to make sure that they are receiving the necessary services to get their health back on track.. My ultimate goal with pursuing a career in Radiography is being able to take my skills and knowledge back to my home country of Burkina Faso and other countries in need. Throughout the years, I have seen many people and families go through so much heartache because they do not have the best access to healthcare, especially diagnostic care. This is for various reasons such as financial reasons, the demand of certain providers being low, simply not having the accessibility to it, and so much more. For example, in 2020, my grandmother complained of discomfort in her throat and went to seek medical attention. Due to our country’s inadequate medical infrastructure and there not being an examination available at the time, she was never able to be properly seen and unfortunately passed away. I use her story to show that even when a Burkinabé citizen is in a position to seek medical attention, especially diagnostic care, our system just is not in place to help. My hope and goal is to establish services throughout my country, especially in rural areas, provide various examinations instead of the basic ones we currently have, and to find a way to make radiography affordable to provide financial relief. This way, people will have a fair chance of being healthy and able-bodied. I also hope that by achieving my own goals, I will inspire and encourage other people to do the same because at the end of the day it takes a community to make a difference.
