Growing up in a rural town where language and financial barriers limited my family's access to healthcare, I recognize the uncertainty that many patients experience when facing an unfamiliar healthcare system. As a future physician, I want to ensure immigrant communities can live healthy lives and provide better access to care through a familiar language. I hope by understanding each patient’s unique background, I can begin to tackle preventable diseases in underserved communities whose trials have inspired me to pursue medicine.

  Mission:

  The daycare center at the local women’s and children’s shelter had been closed due to a lack of staffing. The Big Sibs project at YHHAP filled the need with volunteers to play with the kids and provide tutoring and homework help at the shelter. During the pandemic, we could no longer volunteer in person at the shelter. As a project head, my team and I spoke with the volunteer coordinator at the shelter to identify what the shelter needed most; we then organized 20 toy baskets and 15 toiletry baskets for shelter residents and created a mental health booklet for the children. We partnered with a New Haven bakery to create cookie-decorating kits to celebrate the holidays at the shelter.

  Mission:

  At HAVEN, I helped many immigrants, refugees, and low-income families gain access to medical care by applying for Free Care programs and CT Medicaid. While I was able to directly help some patients clear their medical debt and afford crucial preventative services, I keep returning to the inequity that makes HAVEN necessary in the first place. I was shaken by how sociocultural factors, such as a lack of transportation, fear of deportation, and medical debt could profoundly impact one’s ability to access quality health care. As a physician, I hope to provide culturally sensitive care by incorporating an understanding of my patients’ barriers and that medicine cannot be one-size-fits-all.

  Mission:

  As the PR coordinator, I developed the student PR strategy, including newsletters and videography for Dwight Hall, the Center for Social Justice at Yale, connecting students to over 80 service organizations on campus. Every semester, I coordinate the Day of Service, which unites over 100 students to volunteer with nonprofit organizations in New Haven. One year, I led a group of 10 first-year students on a group service project with Neighborhood Housing Services to create a Google Earth tour to help low-income households find affordable homes. During the pandemic, I created a video campaign to help promote and raise over $15,000 for Chromebooks for New Haven students.

  Mission:

  The whirr of the oxygen tank settled into the night as “Ana” and I watched the rain together. She was bundled up on her hospital bed as I stood beside her making sure the bed did not roll into the grass. No matter how cold, Ana would ask to go outside to watch the harbor. Each time, we would giggle like little girls running off on an adventure. When I returned the next week, the nurses told me that Ana had passed in her sleep two nights before at age 53. I wished I had returned sooner to see her one last time. Yet while I could not stall death nor administer meds to help with the pain, I could provide some comfort by holding each patient’s hands, bringing blankets, and singing softly.

  As an EMT, I am privileged to be invited into each patient’s home, to help guide them through a scary moment in their lives, and to be of service in tragedies. I find ways to make the ride a little better for each patient, whether through a hand squeeze or kind words.

  At CAPS, many of the juniors and seniors come from immigrant backgrounds with little familial support in the college application process. Every week, I meet with “Qi,” a junior, to discuss what it means to go to college, develop 5-year plans, and apply for scholarships.
