At the age of 15, I lost my mother to domestic violence, and her passing profoundly changed my life. It gave me a sad experience of the silence, fear, and generational pain that domestic violence causes within families, particularly in the African American community. This experience has shaped my worldview and strengthened my commitment to breaking cycles of violence and abuse. I learned how easily voices, especially those of women, can be ignored or dismissed in systems that were never designed to protect them.
This life-altering loss is what drives my passion for criminal justice. Pursuing a higher education in criminal justice at my HBCU has not only equipped me with essential knowledge but also empowered me with the cultural awareness, historical context, and a deepened sense of purpose. My aspiration is to become a homicide detective, where I can champion victim-centered investigations and implement trauma-informed practices. I strive to be a compassionate advocate who genuinely listens and recognizes African American women as individuals with unique stories, rather than mere statistics. My commitment lies in ensuring that their safety, dignity, and healing are always at the forefront of my work, fostering an environment where their voices are heard and valued.
My career goal is to become a homicide detective and advocate for victim-centered justice. I want to lead investigations with a trauma-informed approach, one that respects the dignity of victims and families, especially African American women whose stories are too often ignored. I intend to use my position not just to solve cases but to create change, build trust, and ensure every woman impacted by violence knows that she matters.
I aim to improve how law enforcement interacts with victims and families by enhancing communication, integrating mental health support, and coordinating with social service agencies. Too often, survivors and families are left without proper follow ups, compassion, or access to resources. That cycle ends with me. I plan to push for better officer training in cultural sensitivity, expand outreach efforts to at-risk communities, and establish partnerships between law enforcement, therapists, and advocacy organizations to create stronger support systems.
My mission is to transform how law enforcement engages with victims and their families by fortifying communication and coordination with social services and mental health support. The current system frequently falls short in providing the necessary care and follow-through, and I refuse to accept this. I am committed to advocating for rigorous training, proactive community outreach, and strong collaborative efforts among police, counselors, and advocacy groups. Through my dedicated work, I will create safer and more responsive systems that demand justice while also prioritizing the healing of African American women impacted by domestic violence.

In the future, I will become a homicide detective. I am committed to bringing truth, justice, and healing to families impacted by violent crime, especially in communities that have been historically underserved and overlooked. I will conduct ethical and thorough investigations while establishing trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve. Moreover, I will be a strong advocate for reform, working to prevent wrongful convictions and pushing for improved mental health support for both victims and the accused.
To be black is to carry strength, resilience, and excellence. It involves keeping the stories of those who came before me alive and creating space for those who will come after. I take pride in my identity and am deeply rooted in a culture that has consistently fought for justice, love, and liberation, even in the face of significant adversity.
That’s why I proudly chose to attend an HBCU. I wanted to thrive in an environment where my Black identity is not just acknowledged, but celebrated. I am surrounded by inspiring faculty, mentors, and classmates who share my background, uplift me, and challenge me to reach new heights. This experience empowers me to see myself not only as a student but as a future leader ready to make an impact.

As a criminal justice major, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the systemic flaws within the U.S. justice system, particularly through the lens of wrongful convictions. Writing my research paper on the ethical and political implications of criminal justice allowed me to explore the complex factors that lead to life-altering injustices. Researching individuals like Glynn Simmons, who spent 48 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, highlighted for me that justice is not just about laws and procedures; it is fundamentally about humanity, fairness, and accountability.
These stories have deeply resonated with me and prompted reflection on my mental health journey. Having lost my mother to domestic violence, I understand the feelings of powerlessness and being unheard. This personal experience has shaped my views on justice, mental health, and the importance of trauma-informed responses. I believe our justice system should be guided by compassion, not just for those convicted, but also for the victims, their families, and the communities affected by crime and injustice.
I strongly believe that therapy can be a powerful tool in helping individuals and families begin to heal from these traumas. It has helped me process my own experiences, and I aspire to guide others toward finding that same strength and healing. My journey has taught me to lead with an open heart and a willingness to listen. This is the mindset I intend to bring into my future career, where I hope to advocate for more trauma-informed approaches in the field.
I plan to make a positive impact through my education in criminal justice and biology. Pursuing a career as a homicide detective, I am dedicated to bringing integrity, empathy, and critical thinking to each investigation, ensuring that every case is approached with thoroughness, fairness, and a commitment to truth. My objective is to support families like mine who have faced similar challenges, inspiring them to persevere through life’s toughest moments. I am passionate about preventing wrongful convictions and ensuring that justice is delivered ethically and effectively.
Currently, I am contributing to this cause through academic research by raising awareness about systemic failures such as prosecutorial misconduct, coerced confessions, and racially biased juries. I believe that meaningful change begins with informed and courageous voices, and I am determined to be one of them. I am committed to addressing the social issues that lead to injustice and to becoming an advocate for those who are too often overlooked or misunderstood. As a future homicide detective, I aspire to not only solve crimes but also to help restore trust in the justice system and ensure that it protects the innocent as much as it prosecutes the guilty.

As an exemplary law enforcement officer, it is essential to go beyond the enforcement of laws. It involves embodying principles of fairness and justice to ensure that all community members are treated equitably and protected from harm. Safeguarding law-abiding citizens from discrimination and violence, while fostering an environment where everyone feels secure and valued, is a fundamental responsibility. This role demands a deep commitment to creating and maintaining a safe community, where the rule of law is upheld with integrity and compassion.
At the heart of effective law enforcement lies the need to address the root causes of crime and social disorder. Officers must proactively engage with the community, understanding their unique challenges and concerns. This engagement not only aids in crime prevention but also builds a rapport between law enforcement and the public. By being accessible and approachable, officers can gather valuable insights that contribute to crime prevention and community well-being.
In addition to crime prevention, law enforcement officers play a pivotal role in crisis situations. Their ability to respond promptly and appropriately can significantly impact the outcome of an incident. Training in de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention is crucial for officers to handle situations involving mental health issues, domestic disputes, or other volatile scenarios without resorting to unnecessary force. Such approaches demonstrate a commitment to protecting all individuals, regardless of their circumstances.
Integrity and ethical conduct are paramount for law enforcement officers. They must adhere to the highest standards of professionalism, ensuring that their actions are always within the bounds of the law and ethical guidelines. This adherence to integrity fosters public trust, which is essential for effective policing. When the community believes that officers are fair and just, they are more likely to cooperate with law enforcement efforts, report crimes, and participate in community safety initiatives.
Community policing is another critical aspect of modern law enforcement. By working collaboratively with local organizations, schools, and residents, officers can develop strategies that address specific local issues. This collaborative approach helps to create tailored solutions that are more effective than generic, one-size-fits-all strategies. It also empowers the community, giving them a stake in maintaining their own safety and well-being.
Furthermore, law enforcement officers must be vigilant and dedicated to continuous improvement. The nature of crime and social issues is constantly evolving, and officers must stay informed about new trends and challenges. Ongoing training and professional development are essential for officers to remain effective in their roles. By staying updated with the latest advancements in law enforcement techniques, technology, and social dynamics, officers can better serve their communities.
The actions of law enforcement officers should reflect a genuine commitment to the well-being of all individuals. This includes treating everyone with respect and dignity, regardless of their background or circumstances. Upholding these values not only ensures that justice is served, but also that it is perceived to be served. The perception of fairness is crucial for maintaining public trust and confidence in law enforcement.
Ultimately, the effectiveness of law enforcement is measured by the trust and confidence it inspires within the community it serves. When officers are seen as protectors and allies, rather than enforcers, the relationship between law enforcement and the public is strengthened. This trust is the foundation of a safe and just environment where all citizens can thrive. By embodying principles of fairness, justice, and compassion, law enforcement officers can make a profound impact on the communities they serve, ensuring that everyone feels secure, valued, and protected.

With my degree in criminal justice, I plan to help the community by working to assist individuals in successfully reintegrating into society after serving their sentences. Additionally, I hope to collaborate with local law enforcement agencies to implement programs aimed at reducing crime rates and promoting public safety. Being a forensic scientist, I want to use my skills to study evidence and provide accurate and reliable analysis to aid in criminal investigations, ultimately helping to bring justice to victims and their families.
Also, I aspire to educate the public on the importance of forensic science and its role in the criminal justice system. I want to volunteer to help teach the responsibilities and crucial skills needed to work as a forensic scientist to younger generations and inspire them to pursue a career in this field, as it is vital to ensuring justice and safety in our communities. By doing so, I hope to contribute to the growth of the forensic science community and make a positive impact on society. In the same sense, I want to help solve many small or large crime cases and help those who have been wronged throughout the justice system.
Through my dedication to this field, I believe that I can make a difference in the world by bringing justice to those who have been victims of crime. I plan to achieve this goal by volunteering at local schools and community centers, offering workshops and presentations on forensic science, and sharing my own experiences in the field. I hope to collaborate with other professionals in the industry to create educational materials and resources that can be used to inspire and educate young people about the importance of forensic science.
I want to help the public understand how important the criminal justice system is and how different professions in the criminal justice industry are just as important as the local police and sheriff departments. By becoming a forensic scientist, I can use my skills and knowledge to contribute to the justice system and make a positive impact on society, and I hope to inspire others to do the same through my volunteer work and collaborations and use the application of scientific methods and techniques to investigate crimes and analyze evidence, such as DNA, fingerprints, and ballistics.
Through my efforts, I hope to inspire the next generation of forensic scientists and promote a better understanding of the role that science plays in solving crimes. With my passion for forensic science and commitment to educating others, I hope to inspire future generations of forensic scientists and contribute to a safer and more just society.
