As I went through high school, I became interested in where systems failed people and how to keep humanity at the forefront of the solution. At 14, I founded Milestone Moments, a teen-led initiative that celebrates and supports foster youth graduating high school and transitioning out of foster care with graduation baskets. These baskets are filled with essentials like bedding, toiletries, and first aid kits, as well as celebratory items such as plush toys, gift cards, candy, and handwritten notes. They are delivered through the Ventura and LA Counties' Department of Child and Family Services' social workers who know these youth well. This experience has taught me that meaningful impact is not always about solving the biggest problem, but by noticing the needs that others may overlook. In my work in a free clinic, I had observed a wide range of issues with getting care: some with language barriers, poor vision or hearing, and others with difficulty understanding medical terms. This also limited their ability to explore resources for food, healthcare, and transportation. Simple things that most of us may take for granted, access to which would make these patients feel better understood and seen. This led to my creating an AI-coded healthcare app to better support patients in adhering to their treatment plans and understanding instructions. I am now more committed to becoming a physician who transforms healthcare by keeping human dignity at the forefront of medical systems.
