Cindy J. Visser Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Growing up in an underdeveloped country, I have been inspired to become a nurse to help children in my country. When I was young, I always passed this small clinic in my town and would see a long line of patients in front. It was heartbreaking to witness sick children have to wait for hours just to get treated. At that time, I was worried that a poor healthcare system in my country would kill more Vietnamese children. Till now, I still have that concern as I saw many Vietnamese people could not make it during the COVID crisis. Even though healthcare workers in Vietnam did try their best to save their patients, the lack of healthcare staff and advanced technology made it harder to treat COVID patients. I have been questioning: "If Vietnam has more competent healthcare workers, would people have a higher chance of survival when dealing with any diseases?" It is why I have decided to pursue a nursing degree in the US with a passion for helping my country in the future.
Leaving my family and moving to another country on my own to achieve a competitive degree is not an easy decision. I was scared of pursuing nursing because it is not an easy job and can be life-threatening to my patients if I am not proficient enough. However, the only way to become a skilled nurse is to ignore the difficulties and focus on learning and practicing. What I hope to achieve is the knowledge from my experienced professors and instructors. I will try my hardest to learn from them in the next two years of nursing school. Furthermore, I hope to develop communication skills with patients and coworkers as I get to practice at different hospitals. I believe that communication is essential in the healthcare setting because we have to connect with the patients before treating them. As I have learned in college, nurses play a crucial role in advocating and encouraging their patients. Therefore, throughout my study career, I hope to learn how to provide the best care for my patients by showing compassion, giving comfort, and being present when they need me.
I believe that showing compassion is one of the valuable traits exemplified by Cindy. It is a relief to patients to know that they are not fighting the sickness alone. It is something I also want the children in my country to know. I had seen Vietnamese kids with cancers keep asking their parents: "Why did this choose me?" Like Cindy, I also find beauty in nature and this life, and I want to tell the kids that there is more to look forward to than worrying about death and living. I want them to go to bed calmly every night, knowing they are in good care. I'm also a church member like Cindy, so I want to demonstrate God's love in everything I do for my patients. My mission is to let my patients know that God always provides competent healthcare workers to look over them despite their religion. For that reason, I am working hard to become a proficient nurse so that God can use me to take care of His people.
