Bio

I am passionate about advocating for and improving health resources in minority communities. I plan to pursue a Master’s in Public Health, Public Health Education, or Health Administration. All three options would allow me to express my passion for health equity. My goal is to open or be an administrator of a community center and partner with healthcare facilities in the community to give them affordable care and educational materials. I will also provide educational materials to inform underfunded and underrepresented communities about resources and care options that are affordable and accessible through the partnership of the community center and clinic. I would also like to educate various age groups to display to schools in the community and travel to present information nationally. I aim to become a national or international advocate for public health and affordable healthcare. Additionally, as a person of color, developing relationships in communities to build trust and improve interest in care. I have seen many of my friends fall ill from fear of doctors, and I wish to relinquish others of the same concerns.

Choosing a historically black college was the only option for me. As a black woman in the South, I was always in "white spaces" that sometimes did not provide a sense of belonging and marginalized my intelligence. HBCUs were created to be a place for us to thrive due to limitations everywhere else. t was imperative for me to attend an institution that would appreciate my presence while providing a nondiscriminatory environment and a sense of pride in my culture while nurturing my mind and spirit. In the future, I will be an advocate for minority health. As a Public Health Educator and Evaluator, I will constantly be working to develop long-term initiatives to combat health disparities. Historically, black communities have been neglected and isolated regarding healthcare and resources. As a result, many social determinants of health contribute to lower life expectancies and diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, HIV, and heart disease, all of which pose a more significant threat when left untreated or undiagnosed. This is why I want to provide prevention education to black communities and reclaim a positive life quality. However, it does not end with educating our communities. Healthcare providers must address their biases, work to provide affordable care, empathize, and listen to patient concerns. Too many have lost thier lives due to a missed cancer diagnosis, a non-medicated birth, and neglect for pain complaints. We address discrimination in all waves of life, and the new generation will fight to end it.
