My name is Vondell Nelson Jr., and I am proudly of Guyanese descent. Growing up in a family that values resilience and perseverance, I have learned the importance of hard work and dedication. These lessons have been particularly significant as I am a first-generation college student, striving to achieve what was once beyond my family's reach.
I chose nursing as my second chance—a calling I firmly believe was bestowed upon me by God. This decision is deeply personal and stems from a profound desire to serve others. Nursing, for me, is not just a career but a vocation that allows me to connect with people on an intimate level, providing care, support, and compassion during their most vulnerable moments. It is also a way for me to spread the word of God, embodying His teachings through my actions and service.
Currently, I am juggling two jobs to overcome the financial hardships of not having familial support. This journey has been incredibly challenging, but it has taught me invaluable lessons in time management, perseverance, and the importance of unwavering dedication. Despite these demands, I am committed to excelling in my studies and being a positive role model for my six-year-old daughter. She is my inspiration, and everything I do is driven by the desire to create a better future for us both.
Contributing to my family and community is at the heart of who I am. At home, I strive to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for my daughter, instilling in her the same values of resilience and compassion that I hold dear. I ensure she knows that despite the hardships, with determination and faith, anything is possible.
In my community, I am actively involved in various initiatives and volunteer work. I believe deeply in the power of giving back and supporting those in need. For example, I volunteer at local health fairs, providing basic health screenings and education to underserved populations. This allows me to apply my nursing knowledge while building trust and connections within my community. Additionally, I participate in my church's outreach programs, helping to organize events that promote health, well-being, and spiritual growth.
Looking forward, I plan to sustain and expand my community involvement post-college. My goal is to work as a community health nurse, focusing on preventative care and health education. I am passionate about addressing the social determinants of health that disproportionately affect underserved communities, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources and care they need to lead healthy lives.
Moreover, I aspire to establish a mentorship program for aspiring nursing students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. I understand firsthand the challenges of navigating higher education without support, and I want to be a source of guidance and encouragement for others in similar situations. By sharing my experiences and providing practical support, I hope to empower the next generation of nurses to achieve their goals and contribute to their communities.
In conclusion, my background and experiences have profoundly shaped my commitment to nursing and community service. Despite the hardships I have faced, I remain steadfast in my belief that nursing is my calling and my second chance to make a meaningful impact. Through this path, I can connect with people, spread the word of God, and serve my community with compassion and dedication. This is my last shot at becoming someone, and I am placing all my chips at the center, betting on myself and my future.

Becoming a nurse means more to me than a career; it embodies a calling to serve humanity with compassion, dedication, and empathy. It represents a lifelong commitment to advocating for patients, supporting their families, and enhancing community health and well-being. The journey to becoming a nurse is both challenging and rewarding, requiring a balance of scientific knowledge, technical skills, and a profound sense of empathy.
Nursing is about making a meaningful impact in the lives of others. From a young age, I have been drawn to the idea of helping people in their most vulnerable moments. Witnessing the tireless efforts of nurses who cared for my ailing grandmother, I saw firsthand the profound difference they made not only in her life but also in the lives of our entire family. Their compassion, patience, and skill were a source of comfort and strength during a challenging time. This experience ignited a passion within me to pursue a path in nursing, to be that source of support and care for others.
The essence of nursing lies in its holistic approach to healthcare. Nurses are not only caregivers but also educators, advocates, and confidants. They play a crucial role in the healthcare system, often serving as the primary point of contact between patients and the complex medical world. This unique position allows nurses to build strong, trusting relationships with patients, understanding their needs and concerns on a personal level. For me, becoming a nurse means embracing this multifaceted role, being attentive to the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of each patient. One of the most inspiring aspects of nursing is its focus on lifelong learning and professional development. The medical field is constantly evolving, with new treatments, technologies, and research emerging regularly. As a nurse, staying updated with these advancements is not just a requirement but a responsibility. This commitment to continuous learning ensures that patients receive the best possible care based on the latest evidence and practices. I am excited about the prospect of continually expanding my knowledge and skills, driven by a desire to provide exceptional care.
Furthermore, nursing offers a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. Effective teamwork and communication are essential in delivering comprehensive patient care. Nurses often act as liaisons, coordinating between doctors, specialists, and other healthcare providers to ensure that patients receive a well-rounded and cohesive treatment plan. This collaborative environment fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect, reinforcing the idea that we are all working towards a common goal: the well-being of our patients.
Another compelling aspect of nursing is its emphasis on patient advocacy. Nurses are in a unique position to advocate for their patients' rights, needs, and preferences. This advocacy can take many forms, from ensuring that patients understand their treatment options to speaking up about their concerns and preferences in medical decisions. For me, being a nurse means being a steadfast advocate for my patients, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health and supporting them through every step of their healthcare journey. Nursing also provides an opportunity to make a difference on a broader scale. Community health nursing, for example, allows nurses to work within communities to promote health, prevent illness, and address social determinants of health. This aspect of nursing aligns with my desire to contribute to public health and work towards a healthier, more equitable society. Through community outreach, education, and advocacy, nurses can have a profound impact on the health and well-being of entire populations. It represents a commitment to caring for others with compassion and empathy, advocating for patients, and continually striving for excellence.

I can advocate for greater access to mental health services and resources both on and off campus. In my educational journey, I find myself at a pivotal juncture as I pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. This journey has been marked by twists and turns, career switches, and moments of self-discovery that have ultimately led me to this point.
My path to nursing has not been linear. Like many, I embarked on my post-secondary education with a vague sense of direction and a desire to explore different fields. Initially, I pursued a degree in business administration, drawn to the promise of financial stability and career opportunities. However, as I delved deeper into my studies, I began to feel a sense of disconnection from my chosen path. While business offered practical skills and theoretical knowledge, it lacked the fulfillment and sense of purpose I craved.
It was during this period of reflection and soul-searching that I experienced my "aha" moment—the realization that my true calling lay in healthcare. This epiphany was not sudden but rather a gradual awakening sparked by personal experiences and encounters with healthcare professionals who left an indelible impression on me. Whether it was witnessing the compassionate care provided by nurses during a hospital visit or volunteering at a local clinic, I felt a deep sense of resonance with the nursing profession.
My decision to pursue nursing was not only driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of others but also by a recognition of the diverse opportunities and challenges inherent in the field. Nursing, I realized, offered the perfect blend of science, empathy, and problem-solving—a profession where I could apply my analytical skills and passion for helping others in a meaningful and impactful way.
Returning to school to pursue nursing was a daunting yet exhilarating decision. It required courage to step outside my comfort zone, navigate unfamiliar terrain, and embrace the uncertainties that accompany change. As a non-traditional student, I faced unique challenges, including balancing coursework with familial responsibilities, financial constraints, and self-doubt. However, these challenges only strengthened my resolve and reinforced my commitment to my chosen path.
One of the defining moments of my journey occurred during a clinical rotation at a local hospital. It was here, amidst the hustle and bustle of the healthcare environment, that I experienced firsthand the profound impact nurses have on patient care. From administering medications to providing emotional support, I witnessed the holistic nature of nursing and its ability to make a tangible difference in the lives of patients and their families.
In that moment, I knew with unwavering certainty that I was meant to be a nurse. It was not just a career choice but a calling—an opportunity to channel my compassion, empathy, and dedication into a profession that aligns with my values and aspirations. From that day forward, I approached my studies with renewed vigor and purpose, driven by the knowledge that each lesson learned and skill acquired brings me one step closer to realizing my dream.
As I continue on this journey, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences and opportunities that have shaped me into the person I am today. While the road ahead may be challenging, I am confident in my ability to overcome obstacles and persevere in pursuit of my goals. Nursing is not just a career for me; it is a vocation—a lifelong commitment to serving others with compassion, integrity, and excellence. And as I embark on this next chapter of my journey, I do so with excitement, determination, and a deep sense of purpose.

This passion has fueled my future goals and aspirations, shaping the trajectory of my academic and professional pursuits.
Looking ahead, my experiences as a non-traditional student have profoundly influenced my future goals and aspirations. One of my primary goals is to pursue a career in healthcare, where I can combine my passion for helping others with my academic background in nursing. As an aspiring nurse, I am committed to providing compassionate care to individuals and families, particularly underserved and vulnerable populations. My name is Vondell Nelson, and my journey has been marked by trials and tribulations that would have broken many. At the age of 18, I found myself homeless, navigating the unforgiving streets with no place to call home. But even before that, as an immigrant from Guyana, I faced the rugged streets and challenges of a new country, where survival seemed like an uphill battle every day.
Yet, perhaps the most defining moment of my life came at the tender age of 14 when I was brutally stabbed three times. I fought for my life, clinging to hope as I teetered on the brink of death. But by some miracle, I was granted a second chance—a chance to escape the violence and uncertainty of my surroundings and start anew in the United States.
However, the scars of my past followed me, and adversity continued to rear its ugly head. Despite the promise of a fresh start, I grappled with the aftermath of my trauma and battled with depression. It seemed as though every step forward was met with another obstacle, threatening to undo the progress I had fought so hard to achieve.
But in the midst of darkness, a flicker of light emerged—my daughter. She became my reason to persevere, my beacon of hope in the midst of despair. With her innocent eyes and unwavering love, she reminded me of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of unconditional love.
And then, there was God. In my darkest moments, I turned to faith, seeking solace and guidance in prayer. Through the storm of my struggles, I found strength in His promises and comfort in His presence. He became my rock, my anchor in the tumultuous sea of life.
Slowly but surely, I began to claw my way out of the depths of despair. I sought help, reaching out to loved ones and seeking professional support to address my depression. I surrounded myself with positivity, immersing myself in activities that brought me joy and solace.
Bit by bit, I reclaimed my life, refusing to let the darkness consume me. I found solace in my daughter's laughter, inspiration in her unwavering love, and hope in the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the trials that have shaped me into the person I am today. I am no longer defined by my past, but rather by the strength, resilience, and unwavering faith that have carried me through the darkest of days.
Though the road has been long and arduous, I stand tall as a testament to the power of God and the human spirit to overcome even the greatest of adversities. And as I look to the future, I do so with renewed hope, knowing that no matter what challenges may lie ahead, I have the strength, courage, and faith from God to overcome them all.
