I came to the United States from Slovakia at thirteen. Neither of my parents went to college, so when I applied I had nobody to ask. I grew up speaking Rusyn, a Carpathian minority language that has never had a country of its own and is losing speakers every year. I volunteer with ZRIS, the Union of Rusyn Intelligentsia in Slovakia, translating documents and assisting with research. I am teaching the language to my two sons, aged three years and three months, because no school will. If I do not pass it on, it stops with me. I taught in China for twelve years as a teacher, program director and curriculum coordinator, advising students through applications no one in their families had made before. In 2025 my position was eliminated along with every other foreign teacher's, and I returned to Chicago with my family. I have changed fields entirely. I am completing an advanced certificate in Cybersecurity and IT at Wright College with a 4.0 GPA, and I taught myself first. Before enrolling I built a security platform that never stores a credential, an approval gate with an append-only audit ledger, and a nightly vulnerability scanner whose first live run found a critical authentication bypass in a production system. The most useful thing I have learned is that a tool reporting success is making a claim, not stating a fact. Green is not evidence. I am doing this on about five hundred dollars a month while my wife is home with our baby. I want to work in security engineering, and I want my sons to grow up speaking a language most people have never heard of.
