Bio

The summer of junior year, as I was looking through old photo books, I came across pictures of my five-year-old self playing doctor. A shiny plastic stethoscope hanging crooked around my neck, I held a toy first aid kit firmly in my hands, my tiny body swimming in a white lab coat several sizes too large, yet the look in my eyes was one of seriousness. My patients felt as real to me as any doctor’s, even though they were my parents, and it didn’t matter that my clinic was really my living room. From the time I was little, I have felt called to medicine and over time this feeling has only grown. I find joy in helping others by dedicating my time volunteering in community service organizations. As I have received the opportunities to job shadow neurologists, pediatricians, and nurses, I have observed doctor-patient interactions and have been surrounded by the fast-paced environment of medical professionals. Throughout my experiences in job shadowing, I have realized that the goal of a doctor is to only help and care for others. I remember one day observing a neurologist, consulting a patient in her late 40’s who has a brain condition in which her hand shake uncontrollably. She talked about how people made fun of her at work, and why she was afraid to take on certain tasks just so people will not see the shakiness of her hands. As the doctor was listening, his immediate response was filled with much sympathy and graciousness that all the lady could do was smile. It filled my heart with satisfaction in seeing the connection between the doctor and patient. Through this, I have realized that my life’s purpose is not to pursue a degree or a career, it is to pursue something that will allow me to truly help others. Some of my most fundamental characteristics, such as being caring, gracious, and always determined to find a way to help others are what drew me to this career path and this is why I am the great candidate for this scholarship.
