I want to pursue the field of Cyber Security and Networking because computers have always been an influence on my life. Although I had no real role models that made me want to go into the field, it was my love of media and characters in the shows that I watched which fueled my passion for learning. It hasn't always been easy for my family, especially since my brother was the first to go to college. I had always stressed about our financial situation because, at a young age, my parents had instilled the mindset that they had to financially support twins at the same time. I am a twin to my sister Lilian and we have always worked hard to make the least amount of hardships for our parents going forward. I have participated in multiple clubs and even created one at Central Valley High School called Sisters in STEM. Other clubs that are notable are Cyber Patriot, SkillsUSA, and National Honors Society. These clubs have really helped me grow my love for learning and develop the technical and soft skills to go into the real world.     If I were to pick three that stand out, I’d go with: "Everything I Wanted" – This song really resonates because of how it captures the overwhelming pressure and loneliness that can come with fame, even when it looks like everything is perfect from the outside. The lyrics, “I had a dream / I got everything I wanted,” are haunting because they express the realization that material success and external validation don't necessarily bring happiness. It's a reminder of how important self-awareness and self-acceptance are. "bury a friend" – This track is eerie, and I think it resonates because of how it explores the darker side of the human psyche—both the feeling of being consumed by one’s own mind and the external judgments we face. The imagery of "bury a friend" feels like it’s about letting go of toxic relationships or even parts of oneself that are no longer serving a purpose. The unsettling tone and its commentary on mental health and self-perception really strike a chord. "When the Party's Over" – This song gets me because it dives into the themes of emotional exhaustion and the desire to escape. Billie’s voice here is so vulnerable, and the line “Don’t you know I’m no good for you?” is such a raw confession of feeling like you’re not good enough for someone else, but also acknowledging that you need to protect yourself. The minimalistic arrangement, along with the haunting emotion in the delivery, captures that feeling of isolation in the midst of a crowd perfectly.     What truly inspires me about cybersecurity is its power to ensure trust and reliability in our increasingly interconnected world. Whether it's protecting sensitive information, securing critical infrastructure, or enabling seamless communication across the globe, cybersecurity serves as the guardian of our digital realm. As technology becomes more pervasive in our daily lives, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. It's not just about protecting data; it's about safeguarding privacy, preserving trust in online interactions, and upholding the very fabric of our interconnected society. This view of security first revealed itself to me in my senior year. I had the privilege of participating in the CyberPatriot competition, an experience that truly shaped my perspective on cybersecurity and networking. I had to understand how data traversed cables and devices, which I then put into practice. I proudly led a team of four members, all of whom had little to no experience with CyberPatriot, which made me excited to teach them neat tricks in Windows 10, Ubuntu Linux, and even introduce them to Kali Linux as a bonus, showcasing cool tools they could use for practice. In addition to teaching high schoolers these tools, I also shared my knowledge with aspiring middle schoolers at a GenCyber camp at EWU, showing them tricks in the Linux terminal and demonstrating the power it holds. Some of the fun commands I shared were cowsay and sl, but the most impressive was hashcat, where I taught them how to compare common passwords in a list and match them with the corresponding hash. I will never forget how amazed they were to see just how much power a computer could have. Initially, I wanted to attend Western Washington University for cybersecurity. However, after learning that I needed to enroll in one of the designated community or technical colleges, my interest shifted to Bellingham Technical College (BTC). I chose BTC because of its supportive community and the diverse range of classes it offers. The prospect of taking computer science courses there motivated me and filled me with excitement. Moreover, during the application process, I found everyone to be incredibly receptive to my inquiries, fostering a sense of being cared for within an awesome community! Convincing my parents to attend a technical college was definitely challenging at times, but I've come to realize that these colleges bring enormous value in furthering my education at a fraction of the cost of a four-year university—especially since my twin sister is also attending the same school. In the future, I most definitely want to pursue Cybersecurity as my career and as a women in STEM, I'm proud of the impact that I have become for those younger than me. This is why I would be immensely grateful for receiving this scholarship!

By my sophomore year, I started taking those types of courses and I saw a pattern emerge by my junior year. Not only were there still no female role models that had come about in my life for Science and Technology, I also saw that the field was predominantly male. Many times, I felt lost and scared of losing a passion that was sparked by child wonder. I questioned “Am I good enough for this?” many times and feelings of imposter syndrome became evident. However, I spoke out to close people around me and it turned out that I was not the only one. Instead of drowning in the infinite headspace of doubt, I took action to make things better. I established a club called Sisters in STEM (SIS) with other young women at my school. Initially, I viewed that SIS aimed to build a community of girls who wholeheartedly supported each other to create an environment where they can thrive to express themselves in the world of STEM. One of SIS’s main initiatives was to reach the local middle schools in our area to show them different topics, specifically focusing on technology. I encouraged the children to ask questions during guest speakers' presentations, including when I shared my own experiences as a woman in STEM. It was amazing to see these brilliant minds find inspiration from technology, much like I did in middle school. Even if they don't ultimately choose IT as their main career path, the lessons taught at the camp are unforgettable. At the end of the day, I also learned something new: the importance of always learning something new everyday. Their emphasis on robust networking protocols, advanced security features, and cutting-edge technologies like AI-driven threat detection and response systems provides a shield against cyber attacks. What truly inspires me about these technologies is their power to ensure trust and reliability in our increasingly interconnected world. Whether it's protecting sensitive information, securing critical infrastructure, or enabling seamless communication across the globe, cybersecurity and Cisco networking (or computer networking in general) serve as the guardians of our digital realm. As technology becomes more pervasive in our daily lives, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. This view of security revealed itself in my senior year.     Originating from a first-generation family, my parents were unable to afford to complete their high school education or even try to pursue any other forms of academics after that. Within the constraints of everyday reality, I lacked prominent role models in the field of STEM. I realized that there were more pathways than just the ordinary roles of becoming a doctor, engineer, or lawyer that I was being told about as a young girl when I went out to do my research. The dawned fascination with STEM started when I was young, my over-preparedness came into view in middle school when I would plan out meticulously of my high school career and try to make the most of any computer science classes that were available. By my sophomore year, I started taking those types of courses and I saw a pattern emerge by my junior year. Not only were there still no female role models that had come about in my life for Science and Technology, I also saw that the field was predominantly male. Many times, I felt lost and scared of losing a passion that was sparked by child wonder. I questioned “Am I good enough for this?” many times and feelings of imposter syndrome became evident. However, I spoke out to close people around me and it turned out that I was not the only one. Instead of drowning in the infinite headspace of doubt, I took action to make things better. I established a club called Sisters in STEM (SIS) with other young women at my school. Initially, I viewed that SIS aimed to build a community of girls who wholeheartedly supported each other to create an environment where they can thrive to express themselves in the world of STEM. One of SIS’s main initiatives was to reach the local middle schools in our area to show them different topics, specifically focusing on technology. The fragrance of Vietnamese cuisine and the loud laughter of relatives create a tapestry of warmth and familiarity that shapes my identity. My hands, clean and young are weathered by the echoes of my family's journey from Vietnam to the United States. They bear witness to my parents' sacrifices—fingers interweaving tales of struggle and triumph. My mother’s hands, callous and thin, contrast with my dad’s, which are rough and dirt-creased. These hands have learned the meaning of working hard for the betterment of their lives and mine. Not only were there still no real female role models that had come about in my life for IT, but I also saw that the field was predominantly male. Many times, I felt lost and scared of losing a passion that was sparked by my curiosity as a child. I questioned, “Am I good enough for this?” more times than I could count and I began struggling with feelings of imposter syndrome. Despite this feeling, I confided in my inner circle--as it turned out, I was not the only one who felt this way.     From my early years, I sensed a curiosity within me that led me to explore various fields within STEM, even though I wasn’t entirely sure where this path would take me. During my 4th and 5th-grade years, I delved into different avenues, always eager to discover more about the world of technology. This innate curiosity was the spark that eventually led me to my passion for Computer Science. As I grew older, my interest in Computer Science deepened. I eagerly seized every opportunity that came my way, immersing myself in programming languages. I have explored programming languages like JavaScript, Python, and HTML. These experiences laid the foundation for my journey into more specialized areas like cybersecurity and networking. Participating in hackathons alongside my classmates and my twin sister, I had the chance to apply my skills in real-world scenarios. Last year at Gonzaga University with my other classmates and twin sister we created an HTML website that was a storytelling game and spent a good 14 hours collaborating to work on that project which resulted in our team winning 1st place for the high school division. The second hackathon revolved around a CTF. I contributed to my team by working on the AWS portion which was really exciting because it worked with the CLI and demonstrated the lack of security of an S3 bucket. From these experiences alone, I can confidently say that these two events were worthwhile in my pursuit to learn more about the different branches of CS and it has only assured me that this is what I want to do in the future. The challenge that I face is being the small minority in a classroom full of men. There are moments where I feel imposter syndrome because of the confidence that my classmates exude when answering questions or when they assume that I don’t understand what is going on. However, that doesn’t mean that I don’t know anything, in fact, my hard work has paid off to see positive prospects. I participate in competitions to get experience and progress my personal improvement. Since I face these challenges day to day, I have learned to adapt to the environment around me.
