1) My name is Vivian Hernandez and I plan to have a bachelors in Computer Science with a concentration in cybersecurity. As a member of Girls Who Code, I plan to open a club at the college I attend after I graduate. Girls Who Code is a program offered to middle schoolers and high schoolers, with a goal of increasing the number of women in computer science. If I had freedom of time and finances what would I do? I would explore every STEM field I could. I would explore field like medicine, engineering, and the way in which they enter twine. 2) I have enjoyed learning about technology and can not see a future in which it is not a part of my life. I have met women in the field who have not only inspired me but taken the time to teach me and talk about their experiences in the field. I have met software engineers who work for Hulu and security architects from Disney. I love technology and the fact that there are millions of ways to approach and solve a problem. I thought, as I was sitting at my desk, looking at the computer screen showing an error. My “Girls Who Code” playlist was playing in the background, which indicated it was time to get to work. Did I need help? I could have tried and continued to figure this out on my own like I had done on past projects. An increasingly quiet silence after our teacher’s question only served to reinforce this belief. I didn’t want to ask for help. However, I couldn’t figure this out on my own. I didn’t have anyone else to ask for help, and I wouldn’t be able to sleep until the website worked. I gave up! I surrendered over my pride. I had spent many nights sleepless working on this project, only to wake up haggard in the morning. Whether it was my frustration, lack of sleep, or broken down morale that helped me realize this, it had led me to surrender. I finally responded, “Yeah, could you please take a look at my code?” My teacher looked it over and said, “Oh! You’re just missing a comma on line 17.” I had never known what people meant by an out-of-body experience, but at that moment, I did. Maybe, just maybe, being the type of programmer that does everything alone and is introverted wasn’t for me. What I needed was to get over my ego and ask a pair of fresh eyes to help me understand what I was doing wrong. No longer would I rely on only myself but I would also seek assistance from those around me, no matter how much pride I may have. After adding that comma and testing again I said, “It’s working now, thank you.”
