As a medical professional and health care advocate, it is not only my responsibility but also my moral duty to represent and treat these patients with compassion. At an early age, I was introduced to many mental illnesses and negative behavior. It saddens me that there is such little representation in medicine to help cope with these illnesses. Genetics plays a role in mental illness and how disorders are passed down from previous generations. With this concept, I would like to share my personal experiences related to my diagnosis of ADHD and social anxiety. This confusing diagnosis leaves practitioners and patients both unsure of certain triggers and treatments. It’s so much easier to push medications and not work on behavior modification or lifestyle changes such as meditation, yoga or physical activity. My journey has not been easy as I was diagnosed later in my life which was both frustrating and worrisome. I was anxious for my future and how I would get into PA school labeled with a ‘mental disorder'. This has been extremely difficult to cope with and tiresome. This has also shown me to be more empathetic with family and society as a whole. Unlike a physically debilitating disorder, mental illness can not be seen; it’s actions or symptoms the individual feels and expresses within themselves. I’ve become more aware of mental illnesses and compassionate with medicine as a whole. Psychiatry is a small specialty that needs more awareness and providers to not only advocate for the field but also showcase how individuals can live a healthy, normal life without the negative attributes society once believed about this field. Ending the negative stigma associated with mental illness will allow more accessibility to seek treatment and make patients more comfortable with themselves knowing this is normal. As a graduate student, I am pursuing a career as a physician assistant. As a PA, we can not only serve as patients’ primary care providers but also diagnose and treat many kinds of illnesses and disorders. Mental health and psychiatry are growing fields of huge interest to me. With an extensive background and personal experience in this field of medicine, I truly believe I will make a difference with every patient I encounter. My main goal is for them to feel heard and know that they are not alone. Gaining trust and knowing that I can make a difference one smile at a time. Identifying as a gay hispanic man allows me to represent two minority groups that may not have equal representation or opportunities. As a future healthcare provider and PA, my goal is to welcome all clients and patients, regardless of gender, sexual identity, race or other discriminative features. I will promote an inclusive, safe space for all and ensure protection as well as the best possible healthcare I can provide. I know how it feels to be uncomfortable in medical settings and feel you cannot share all concerns with fear of judgment or mockery. I will confirm confidentiality to all my patients and assure safety under my care. My goal is for patients to identify with me and feel heard. Medicine is unfortunately a money game and insurance companies don’t truly care for the patient’s health. I will do my best to ensure individuality with all patients. Lastly, my lifetime goal is to be a healthcare advocate for those less fortunate. This includes minority groups with little representation and voice. As a future PA, it is my duty as a healthcare professional to ensure the utmost care to every patient and group of individuals regardless of discrimination or outside influences. I will advocate for equality amongst all and representation for those less fortunate. Social media has become a way to influence a mass audience and spread awareness quickly. Using this platform to my advantage, I can achieve this goal rather quickly and ensure my goals are continued throughout my legacy as a healthcare provider.

Identity is something that can or cannot be seen but is unique to the individual. Identifying oneself within a certain community creates a sense of belonging. When you can share the same beliefs and values as those around you, a family is unified. Growing up as a gay hispanic man, I faced many challenges and hardships. Grade school was the hardest years of my life as I wasn’t fully able to cope with who I was nor was I able to express my true self image. Society and the media was not as accepting as it is today. Being openly gay put a target on my back and I was constantly bullied, alienated and even physically assaulted for my sexual identity. After years of positive reinforcement and therapy, I am proud of who I am and to represent an inclusive diversified group of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. Individuals are encouraged to express themselves freely and however makes them feel special. Hispanic culture is diversified in such a way that specific ethnic groups share similar cultures and traditions. With that said, these cultures and traditions are also uniquely different from each other with generational differences. Being able to identify with hispanic culture helped me feel included with a feeling of belonging. Sharing cuisine, language, clothing, and traditions helps shape my identity and allows me to express myself in such a way that represents who I identify as without fear of judgment. Individuals are encouraged to express themselves freely and however makes them feel special. Music allows the individuals to express their taste and interests in a unique manner. Music, regardless of genre, is freedom of speech which allows the artist and listeners to collaborate and share a common interest. Heavy metal is a genre that touches the soul. Typical head banging, loud bass music is meant to be appreciated, not understood. Heavy metal music means allowing yourself to let go of the negativity in your life; to allow the music to touch your inner soul and be free of judgement and cruelty. To be free and let go of the life struggles cleanses the mind and permits free flow thought to mainstream. This idealisation can also be compared to cultures and traditions. Being able to identify with hispanic culture helped me feel included with a feeling of belonging. Sharing cuisine, language, clothing, and traditions helps shape my identity and allows me to express myself in such a way that represents who I identify as without fear of judgment. That's perseverance. That's perseverance. That's perseverance.

Identity is something that can or cannot be seen but is unique to the individual. Identifying oneself within a certain community creates a sense of belonging. When you can share the same beliefs and values as those around you, a family is unified. That's perseverance. Mental Health Importance Scholarship
The crippling stigma associated with mental illness nauseates me. In healthcare, it’s our job and responsibility to help and treat patients; but who helps and treats us? Mental health is by far the leading specialty that’s both underserved and underappreciated. Since the covid 19 pandemic, mental health has been pushed aside and not taken seriously. Often, patients do not wish to express concerns about their mental health due to the unforeseen stigma associated and judgment. As a medical professional and health care advocate, it is not only my responsibility but also my moral duty to represent and treat these patients with compassion. Growing up, my grandfather was a functioning alcoholic. Often he was mentally and physically abusive to my grandmother, his wife. As a young boy, I was sheltered from these behaviors but as curiosity arouse, I became more aware of what was happening. At an early age, I was introduced to many mental illnesses and negative behavior. It saddens me that there is such little representation in medicine to help cope with these illnesses. Genetics plays a role in mental illness and how disorders are passed down from previous generations. With this concept, I would like to share my personal experiences related to my diagnosis of ADHD. I was anxious for my future and how I would get into PA school labeled with a ‘mental disorder’. Treatment is daunting as no drug will cure mental illness, most of them relax the symptoms that the individual experiences. This has been extremely difficult to cope with and tiresome. This has also shown me to be more empathetic with family and society as a whole. Unlike a physically debilitating illness or disorder, mental illness can not be seen; it’s actions or symptoms the individual feels and expresses within themselves. As a graduate student, I am pursuing a career as a physician associate (assistant).

    Mental Health Empowerment Scholarship
As a graduate student, I am pursuing a career as a physician associate (assistant).

I chose STEM to make an impact in my community circle and showcase diversity. Growing up as a gay Hispanic man, I faced many challenges and hardships. 1989 (Taylor's Version) Fan Scholarship
Perception is what drives media coverage and drama. Celebrities are constantly being criticized for anything they do with cameras and photography ambushing them at all hours of the day. Taylor Swift has proven through her numerous Grammy awards and nominations that she does not care what the media or people think of her. In regards to her 1989 album, Blank Space has special meaning and this sense of attitude that makes her a queen in the music industry. Love is this unidentified word with an unspecific meaning, yet we all are chasing to find it. Knowing exactly what you want in a relationship is difficult when lust toys with love. This battle between chasing an idealistic relationship and falling in love is what expert therapists and philosophers try to decipher. Unfortunately, gender is marginally stereotyped and females are often to be associated with derogatory names, defacing their character. Taylor was perceived as a psycho serial dater and often blamed for her failed relationship attempts. Music and songwriting are a positive venue to release these emotions; and expose the innocent male gender. The chorus, “Got a long list of ex-lovers, they’ll tell you I’m insane,” mocks the media’s perception while entertaining the idea of her recent relationships. The innocent Tennessee blonde girl every guy wants to bring home to their mother is far from innocent, but neither are we. Admitting what the media already thinks is one way Taylor protected herself from ridicule as she sang about it. Taking the blame off herself, Taylor publicly acknowledged that boys like going after the bad girls and that this was all part of her plan. Maturation comes into play with, “Boys only want love if it’s torture,” as boys enjoy the chase, the thought of being bad and wanted ignites their baby brains. Men want love if it's real, healthy and consistent, not the quick one-night stand dump and pass. The lyric, “Cause you know I love the players, and you love the game,” solidified my obsession with this song. Society’s values on love have changed throughout the years. Lust has overtly become the goal of many people. The temporary satisfaction and constant chase for that next high is what unites the like-minded. Taylor is truly brilliant for expressing this viewpoint and what seemed like taboo but is our reality of love. To date, Taylor has earned and accepted 540 awards during her musical career. In 2022, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from NYU because she is "one of the most prolific and celebrated artists of her generation," NYU spokesperson. To date, Taylor is a role model to all people and most recently has achieved 'billionaire' status thanks to her unbelievable accomplishments and successful Eras tour. Male, female or non-binary, Taylor is an inspirational to all and continues to impress her audience with every step she takes.

My parents did not have the opportunity to continue education post bachelor's degree to raise their 4 children, my 3 siblings. Higher education has been a goal of mine since starting grade school. I knew I wanted to prove to myself and also my family and loved ones that I could do this. I can be successful with the foundational roots of passion and drive. Working since the age of 13, I was able to earn enough money to support my educational supplies and readings. I continue to stay dedicated to this goal in mind where I will become the best version of myself through education and literature. ALS Family Scholarship
Growing up the youngest of 4 siblings meant I was considered the baby of the household. Unfortunately, this was not the case for me. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an uncommon neurological disease primarily affecting one’s ability to control voluntary muscle movements eventually causing total body paralysis. You may remember back in 2014 the “Ice Bucket Challenge”. This viral movement gained awareness of this understudied disease and according to the ALS Association, the annual funding for research was increased by over 187%. Living with a family member who has ALS is not what is portrayed in the news or what one may see on social media. My life has drastically changed since my cousin’s diagnosis and onset of symptoms began. Having little knowledge of this disease, I took it upon myself to change career paths and focus entirely on medicine. I wanted to gain as much knowledge in the field as possible to not only help my family cope with this disease but also raise awareness and one day find a cure. ALS is a debilitating disease that not only affects one’s physical ability to ambulate, it also emotionally affects everyone involved in the everyday care of that loved one. This disease has been extremely frustrating when multiple doctors and specialists seem to not be doing enough; when in reality there is not much to be done. The worst part of this disease is watching my family members emotionally distraught and physically unable to sacrifice time to continue the battle. This is why I am who I am today. The day my cousin was diagnosed with ALS, I made a promise to myself that I would do whatever it took to overcome this battle and educate myself to make a difference. Identifying as a gay Hispanic man allows me to represent two minority groups that may not have equal representation or opportunities. As a future healthcare provider and PA, my goal is to welcome all clients and patients, regardless of gender, sexual identity, race or other discriminative features. I will advocate for equality amongst all and representation for those less fortunate. Social media has become a way to influence a mass audience and spread awareness quickly. Using this platform to my advantage, I can achieve this goal rather quickly and ensure my goals are continued throughout my legacy as a healthcare provider. Lastly, my lifetime goal is to be a healthcare advocate for those less fortunate. This includes minority groups with little representation and voice. If awarded this scholarship, I will use the money saved by paying down my student loans quicker. This will ensure my goals of public health and community are met while pursuing my career in healthcare. After years of positive reinforcement and therapy, I am proud of who I am and to represent an inclusive diversified group of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. Thank you for your consideration.

Identity is something that can or cannot be seen but is unique to the individual. Identifying oneself within a certain community creates a sense of belonging. When you can share the same beliefs and values as those around you, a family is unified. My name is Vincent Bonilla and I am a graduate student pursuing a master's degree in physician associate (assistant). Growing up as a gay Hispanic man, I faced many challenges and hardships. Giving back to the community is one way is which I will make an impact. As a future healthcare privider, it is my job to provide support and a healthy foundation for all whom are needing. This means no judgement, no favortism, no prejudice. Just quality healthcare. This positive impact will allow me to gain trust and understanding with all members of my community and shape the world to be more accepting of those around us. As the president of my student government society, I represent the governing body of over 300 healthcare students in various degree fields. I must meet monthly with other members around the USA and discuss ways in which our society can make a difference and be more successful. I deligate and distribute this feedback to my colleages and we all collaborate in ways we can get more involved not only on university campus but in our own communities too. This role has allowed me to network and join a power team of driven, charismatic individuals I never thought I would meet. Often, patients do not wish to express concerns about their mental health due to the unforeseen stigma associated and judgment. As a medical professional and health care advocate, it is not only my responsibility but also my moral duty to represent and treat these patients with compassion. Ending the negative stigma associated with mental illness will allow more accessibility to seek treatment and make patients more comfortable with themselves knowing this is normal. As a graduate student, I am pursuing a career as a physician associate (assistant).

To date, my greatest achievement is getting accepted into PA school. My entire life, counselors and advisors said I should choose a different career path due to my low test scores. After a couple of years of hearing the same negative advice, it almost became engraved into my mind that I was not good enough. Little did they know, I am resilient and would not accept defeat. I studied harder than I ever have, took a bunch of upper-level science courses and worked to gain as much healthcare experience before applying. Now, two years into school, I can not imagine not fighting for what I want and proving to myself that I am worthy of anything I set my mind to. If awarded this scholarship, I will use the money saved by paying down my student loans more quickly. This will ensure my goals of public health and community are met while pursuing my career in healthcare. Thank you for your consideration

As a graduate student, I am pursuing a career as a physician associate (assistant).

    Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
Taylor was perceived as a psycho serial dater and often blame for her failed relationship attempts. Music and songwriting are a positive venue to release these emotions; expose the innocent male gender.

Identity is something that can or cannot be seen but is unique to the individual. Identifying oneself within a certain community creates a sense of belonging. Leaders not only are pioneers in their specialty but also showcase perseverance in the face of adversity. When you can share the same beliefs and values as those around you, a family is unified. Growing up as a gay Hispanic man, I faced many challenges and hardships. Grade school was the hardest years of my life as I wasn’t fully able to cope with who I was nor was I able to express my true self-image. Society and the media were not as accepting as it is today. Being openly gay put a target on my back and I was constantly bullied, alienated and even physically assaulted for my sexual identity. After years of positive reinforcement and therapy, I am proud of who I am and to represent an inclusive diversified group of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. Identity is something that can or cannot be seen but is unique to the individual. Identifying oneself within a certain community creates a sense of belonging. When you can share the same beliefs and values as those around you, a family is unified. At the age of 10, I had my first sip of coffee. Without me knowing, this ultimately became my favorite drink. Years went by and I still brew a cup or two daily. Drinking this much caffeine has built up this immunity inside my body and I drink it for the taste not so much the physical aspects. Starting graduate school, I knew this had to change. That is when I found out about matcha green tea and its herbal/nutritional benefits. I ended up loving it over ice, until society ruined that for me. Growing up as a gay hispanic man, I faced many challenges and hardships. As a graduate student, I am pursuing a career as a physician associate (assistant).

As a future PA, we work closely to nurses and all professionals in the healthcare field. Hispanic culture is diversified in such a way that specific ethnic groups share similar cultures and traditions. With that said, these cultures and traditions are also uniquely different from each other with generational differences. Being able to identify within the Hispanic community helped me feel included with an insight into unity. Sharing cuisine, language, clothing, and traditions helps shape my identity and allows me to express myself in such a way that represents who I identify as without fear of judgment. I know how it feels to be uncomfortable in medical settings and feel you cannot share all concerns for fear of judgment or mockery. I will confirm confidentiality with all my patients and assure their safety under my care. My goal is for patients to identify with me and feel heard. Medicine is unfortunately a money game and insurance companies don’t truly care for the patient’s health. I will do my best to ensure individuality with all patients. Thank you for your consideration.

The crippling stigma associated with mental illness nauseates me. In healthcare, it’s our job and responsibility to help and treat patients; but who helps and treats us? Mental health is by far the leading specialty that’s both underserved and under appreciated. Since the covid 19 pandemic, mental health has been pushed aside and not taken seriously. Often times patients do not wish to express concerns about their mental health due to the unforeseen stigma associated and judgement. As a medical professional and health care advocate, it is not only my responsibility but also moral duties to represent and treat these patients with compassion. Growing up, my grandfather was a functioning alcoholic. Often times he was mentally and physically abusive to my grandmother, his wife. As a young boy, I was sheltered from these behaviors but as curiosity arouse, I became more aware of what was happening. At an early age, I was introduced to many mental illnesses and negative behavior. It saddens me that there is such little representation in medicine to help cope with these illnesses. Genetics play a role in mental illness and how disorders are passed down from previous generations. With this concept, I would like to share my personal experiences related to my sister. She is 6 years older than me and is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, depression, generalized anxiety and most recently with narcolepsy. This experience has been dramatic and life changing for myself and my family. We were forced into this life and had to educate ourselves with these disorders, counseling and treatment options.
