As a nonprofit educator, I've had the opportunity to contribute to the betterment of young people, and one incident in particular remains vivid. During my time as a mentor for HS, I observed that the boy who was struggling at home had significant issues with both academic and emotional development. He frequently entered the program feeling sluggish and uninterested, leading to poor academic performance. My focus was on establishing a personal connection with him, regardless of the academic level.' His daily check-ins, assignments, and listening were all ways I observed him gradually become more open. One afternoon, he told me: "I was first you saw, so I knew for sure that presence and consistency could do the trick.". His grades had improved, he was more engaged in class, and a friend started helping his classmates at the end of the school year. The experience reinforced my belief that all students can achieve success when they are listened to, heard well, and believed in.
I believe that the most significant aspect of education should be a truly equitable and culturally sensitive system. A significant number of students, particularly those in underprivileged areas, are pursuing education that does not accurately represent their true identities, backgrounds, or abilities. This is an issue. Schools that are poorly funded, have outdated materials, and a lack of culturally relevant courses are common obstacles for these students. From my perspective, students are entitled to an education that not only provides equal access but also offers education as a means of asserting their individuality, needs, and abilities. This involves promoting more diverse educational settings, teaching administrators how to recognize and confront prejudices, and equipping students with the skills to engage in critical thinking. The attainment of equal education is essential if we are to ensure that all students achieve their goals.
I would honestly have to say all of my high school teachers at the Teaching and Learning Institute in East High School were a catalyst for me to pursue education, which has left me hooked. Their confidence in me was unbreakable. My abilities were uncovered by them, and they fostered my confidence by inspiring me to take charge, reflect, and explore the possibility of contributing in the future. Their love for teaching and dedication to students resonated with me. The connection was what motivated me to pursue education at Johnson C. My academic pursuits at Smith University were centered on education and mathematics as minors. In my work with young people, I am constantly reminded of the power of educators to change lives not only through their teaching methods but also through the cultivation of relationships, by modeling compassion, and elevating student behavior to meet high standards.
From a student to an entrepreneur, I've witnessed the transformative power of education in action. My goal is to be a part of the transformation, which involves not only helping students excel in school but also creating societal systems that allow for visibility, encouragement, and support.

At the age of 37, I find myself at a significant juncture in my journey, one that has been influenced by a profound and enduring passion for education, as well as a commitment to assisting young individuals in realizing their fullest potential. From my earliest years, I recognized the power of knowledge and the critical role that strong, compassionate educators play in shaping the future. This understanding has shaped my path and continues to guide my efforts today.
I commenced my formal educational journey at East High School, where I participated in the Teaching and Learning Institute. It was in this environment that my passion for education was nurtured and cultivated. Surrounded by mentors who recognized my potential, I excelled academically and graduated with a GPA of 3.8—an accomplishment that reflects both my dedication and my enthusiasm for learning.
Motivated to further my development, I pursued higher education at Johnson C. Smith University. There, I majored in Education and minored in Mathematics, thereby establishing a robust foundation in both pedagogy and subject matter expertise. My experiences at Johnson C. Smith deepened my understanding of the essential role educators fulfill, not merely in classrooms, but also within communities. I came to regard teaching not solely as a profession, but as a vocation, one that requires patience, vision, and a genuine belief in the potential of every student.
Presently, I am engaged in the nonprofit education sector in Rochester, NY, where I remain dedicated to supporting and inspiring youth. My role affords me the opportunity to interact with young individuals from diverse backgrounds, assisting them in navigating challenges, cultivating confidence, and developing the skills necessary for success. Whether through mentoring, facilitating workshops, or supporting enrichment programs, I strive to serve as a positive influence and a source of encouragement.
In addition to my professional endeavors, I also coach step and dance, creative outlets that empower youth to express themselves while learning the values of discipline, teamwork, and self-respect. These experiences outside the classroom frequently serve as catalysts for growth within the academic setting, and I take pride in aiding students as they discover their voices and strengths through movement and performance.
Looking forward, my objective is to continue expanding my impact in the realm of education. I aspire to become a certified educator, leading my own classroom and fostering inclusive learning environments where students feel acknowledged, supported, and challenged to reach their utmost potential. Education has transformed my life, and I am now committed to employing my experiences, skills, and passion to positively influence the lives of others.
